I lived in Kyoto for several years and I loved it, but I absolutely hated that street because it was so unbelievably crowded all the time and a major tourist trap full of mostly junk (not三年坂, but the first street lol) The back route is much more interesting and less crowded. I'm also pretty sure Kiyo is under construction right now, so not really worth going to unfortuatenly at this point, but if you ever get the chance, the Kiyomizu light up's at night are amazing, especially in fall. I would definitely recommend making the trek for that purpose, but only that purpose haha. I also remember giving my students that assignment to go interview foreigners on their summer trips, I still feel bad about it haha.
Also, for those interested in telling the difference between real Maiko and Tourists:
    (1) Look at the geta. Generally real Maiko in full attire wear Okobo, really tall geta with the front slanted inward, but foreigners and tourists often won't because they can't walk in them; (2) If you look close generally you can often see the wig lines on tourists, but Maiko use their real hair; (3) if the kimono collar is full of all sorts of flashy colors, likely a tourist. Maiko usually have creamy white, red, or sometimes gold collars; (4) real Maiko rarely stop for photos and almost never have an escort following them or carrying their bags; (6) if the kanzashi (hair ornament) does not match the season, it is a tourist; (7) Maiko are usually young, and only usually until about age 18-20, thus older looking Maiko are probably fake; (8) Maiko generally do not tie up their kimono to make it easier to walk because they are trained how to walk gracefully with it down, so if the kimono is tied high up so it is easier to walk, probably a tourist, and (9) if it is before dinner time, chances are extremely high they are a tourist because most Maiko get ready in their okiya during the afternoon and depart for their appointments in the early evening, thus you almost never see a Maiko in full regalia in the afternoon or morning.

Two years ago my wife and I visited the Great Buddha of Kamakura and some Japanese school girls asked to take their pictures with us. We tried to communicate but the conversation ended up in giggles. Long story short I found out that one of the girls spoke Portuguese her family lived in Sao Paulo Brazil which I hear has the biggest Japanese population after Japan. I speak Portuguese so from then on we're able to have a wonderful conversation and she ended up being the translator for her group:-) BTW love your channel.

Your vlogs I started watching just few days back and I have actually stopped watching very popular vloggers like Casey and others and have started to love the way you are totally natural, spontaneous, candid at times and beautifully tell these stories with hints from a sociological perspective. Big respect and a huge fan already! Everybody should watch your vlogs.. They're beautifully made!

I visited Kyoto in 2000. Your tour reminded of many fascinating experiences that came my way. I could go back there tomorrow, but so many other places to visit are on my travel lists. Consequently, I will enjoy your video and commentary. But remember, you are adding to the crowdedness on the streets. The shopkeepers need the business, too.

Japanese tourists pop in, ignore all the other workers and walk straight up to me to ask for directions, recommendations, and what not. Haha they love snapping my photo cause the chunky nerdy Hawaiian lady speaks their language😂 I sell touristy T shirts.... haha I don't even work for an info booth.
