Honda plans to install Honda S+ Shift in all of its future hybrid-electric vehicle models featuring the next-generation e:HEV, starting with the all-new Honda Prelude scheduled to go on sale in 2025.
The Japanese review also 100% confirms that it's a liftback, which isn't brought up in any press materials so far. He doesn't actually open it, but he examines every detail of the interior. I know this seems like a lame point to bring up, but the fact that this car also has a practical use case with a roomy and accessible cargo area is an enormous selling point.
The S+ Shift concept is exactly what I hope Mazda is able to do to bring back the rotary engine while meeting emissions regulations. I’m fine being fooled if I am having a riot!
This wasn't the only Japanese video posted either - I found two more suggested on the side bar of this video that did their own drives and gave a bit more info on suspension setup, dimensions, etc.
Vezel looks like a better and slightly smaller version of the HRV. From what Ive read, it shares the same platform. HRV is another car that needed a Hybrid yesterday.
@@KirkKreifels but it doesn’t make any sense. Why do I have to go to literally the luxury version of Honda just to get what I want that sounds like a marketing issue sounds like they’re trying to pull more money out of you just to get a manual transmission and that’s very bad for enthusiast cause it forces enthusiast to do something that they probably don’t wanna do just for a manual transmission that is sad for the car car community seriously
I had a 86 Prelude SI. It was a great car. I am glad Honda is bringing the name back. I am also glad it is a hybrid, not a pure EV. Maybe they will make a PHEV version ... I agree with your gear shifter comments. Why go to all the trouble of giving it a performance focus and use a button. Maybe they intend the drivers to use the steering wheel paddle shifters instead so the gear shifter might be considered redundant. My biggest complaint of hybrid tech (I have a 2010 Prius) is they lack of gearing. Honda seems to have fixed this even if it's not real gears, as long as it feels right.
Not that I don’t want another proper FWD manual ICE coupe, but it would be fun to see Toyota make their own version of this car with the new Celica and do it better with their more powerful 5th generation hybrid drivetrain.
The car was designed in North America and was first shown at the Los Angeles Motor Show. It got the most press in the region that they expect to sell the car. Nissan did the same thing with the GT-R and the Z, especially the Z, which wore the Fairlady Z emblem on the trunk in all of Nissan’s press images despite the car being left hand drive.
I’m so happy that this video literally proves that it will not come with a manual transmission, which was my point to a lot of people on Instagram and on UA-cam this car will not come with a train with with a manual transmission. It will not there’s no reason for this car to come with the manual transmission and if it is a hybrid, there is no reason for that.
I wouldn’t say that the simulated shifts are “Honda innovation”. It’s more like Hyundai Ionic 5 N innovation. I like that they can have that option for people who still crave the feeling of traditional ICE cars.
He (Japanese UA-camr Unadon) keeps saying improved thermal efficiency but is corrected with a subtitle - has wider rev range of maximal thermal efficiency, so it’s probably around 40% but stays at that efficiency though broader range of revs (I’m a native Japanese speaker)
Honda hybrid is basically an EV, ICE acts like a generator until you reach highway speed/top gear then a clutch closes and ICE drives the wheels. The rest of the time its an EV with a generator. Toyota, Honda, Hyundai all do hybrids vastly different.
Looks like a ton of fun. Hybrids have been rather boring. So this is a great compromise between engagement and economy. As my brother remarked, he said " i didn't bust my ass for 40 years working to drive a Prius".
The S+ trademark was previously in the CRZ. In that car, it means more electric boost to pass on the highway if there is battery juice. Could they use other existing trademarks for different mechanisms, such as EarthDreams, VTEC, or ECON?
Did I tell you I love my 24 Prius Limited hybrid works great in the climate. I’m in upper Midwest! Car is quick. Limited features are nice heated seats and wheel. Power rear lift 50 miles per gallon can’t complain. Take care buddy. Go get it. Enjoy your content.
From the inside, does it look like a hatchback? I know that's completely different from what the prelude traditionally is, however that's what would make or break this car for me. Small cars need a hatchback for practicality. Otherwise it's waiting for the rsx.
Hybrids are good, but I still don't like the idea of being saddled with a vehicle that has a very large, expensive battery that eventually you will have to replace... Or lowers the resale value.
itll have to be lighter than a used civic and a lot more power to weight ratio, maybe super effceint for low cost ownership but for the electrci only one insurance costs, longveity badness, etc means its probably not good there either. aptera is more about effiency and looks much more interesting, not a drivers car but maybe its not so bad as a mild momentum preservation car with different steering programing and wheel. maybe prelude can become relevent if it sells with options to be a cheap car for people who wont have family (most people nowdays)?
I think you're exaggerating - the latest Honda hybrids all fake shifts and they don't drone at a pinned redline unless you're brake torquing. This is a enhancement but it's not all that different.
This looks so cool, really brings the driver engagement that hybrids typically haven't had in the past. Also, it looks like theyre using the same aluminum paddle shifters that were announced for the ADX, which is nice. Hopefully, they can scale their hybrid tech and this S+ mode to their larger vehicles and all of their cars in general.
Toyota fan here, but I love the Prelude, and with the new one don't you worry a bit, because Honda knows how to make a sports car, NSX, S2000, Civic Type R, their expertise will translate into this new Prelude to make it a very good car.

Indeed. That is the exact appeal of the Civic Hatchback. I am also excited for the Prelude if what you're saying can be true and priced well.

S+ was a button in the CRZ (lithium versions only) that when pressed would allow the battery to dump in all it had for up to like 5 or 10 seconds.
As a 92 Prelude owner back in 2002 through 2006. I love seeing this come back and with an ICE powertrain!

Manuals are more difficult to pass sound and emissions regulations with. That’s the main reason why they’re going away.
