You can't talk about this film without talking about Godzilla The Series. The best American godzilla series ever to air on television.
Probably because there’re like 2 american godzilla series out there.
That show was illusive, largely because airings kept being pushed back in favour of showing marathons of Pokémon and Digimon.

The scenes of the helicopters chasing Zilla through the city is one of the best experiences I've had watching a movie in the cinema. On the big screen it really felt like I was flying through the city in the helicopter.

@@shawmiserix404 Even as a kid I thought of it as a different monster. Like every country had a giant monster they called Godzilla so this was the American one and the original was the Jap one. So I was happy to go along with the retcon that Zilla is a different monster existing in the same world as Godzilla. I don't think it's disrespectful. I actually prefer Zilla having his own identity.
@@darkwoods1954 they didntr retcon anything, Toho just made a completely new Kaiju with that design so they can use it but not calling it Godzilla which is of course disrespetful doing that most of ppl call this Godzilla just Zilla and they mention at the video that they hate this Godzilla been called like another kaiju.
So Zilla is just what Toho did to destroy this version of Godzilla but making money with him too at the same time and now many fans call it Zilla because they also do not like it or are not informed well about all of this or just do not care but true fans of this Godzilla still here and loving it!
I like this movie as a kid and I loved that they continued the story in the animated series. I just wishes that it did not get cancelled in season 2
I am a G-Fan and i love this movie. I was born a few yrs after this movie came out but it was my first intro to Godzilla as well as the whole kaiju genre along with Peter Jackson’s King Kong. I have seen all the Godzilla movies and yeah this isn’t the worst Godzilla movie of all time and there were plenty of silly moments even in the recent movies like Godzilla & Mechagodzilla clearly laughing in Godzilla VS Kong. I also love this design and its up there in my top favorite Godzilla incarnations. This movie, while it does have problems but what movie doesn’t, its still an entertaining movie and I’m glad more people are starting to warm up to it. I really wish we got to see the planned sequels that were cancelled where the surviving Godzilla offspring had its offsprings along with The Runt and fight the mutated insects as well as see Nick and Philippe develop since they’re my fav characters in the movie.

This is truly an underrated movie, this alone was what made me a Godzilla fan. I love it's design and how "real" it is and how believable it feels. Definitely one I'll never forget and definitely one I will show to my future kids. Loved the cartoon show as well!

My dude I loved this movie. I remember being 8 years old and the theater went crazy. Literally cheering at moments. Definitely doesn't deserve the hate. Without it ppl like me wouldn't have experienced Goji especially the older movies mainly because TV had alot of Godzilla marathons around the time of 98's release.

This video gives me a new perspective on the 1998 Godzilla.
This is the Godzilla I grew up with. I know it's not perfect, but I LOVE it. I know the original versions are "better" but this film is just pure nostalgia entertaining fun. I still have one of those WEIRD Taco Bell kids meal things of a Zilla baby hatching from an egg. Not sure where it is though, but dang that's a memory hidden deep in my childhood
I luv this movie. Saw it in the theater, It's also the the loudest movie I've seen in theaters.
One of the best things I like about it is the fact that it actually shows a mutated version of a lizard & what it might look like. The original Godzilla is supposed to be a mutated version of a type of dinosaur & I think people who put this one down, forget that.
Funny enough I met Gary L. King, who worked on the practical effects of Godzilla (1998), and Young Frankenstein. He just happened to stop by at my place of work asking for a road map, which we didn't have anywhere on the store shelves.

So cool enough I work for the company who owned all the dump trucks for the fish pile scene and all the fish were real. They put large trays in the trucks so they weren't completely filled but still looked like it

This was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw back when I was in love with Jurassic Park and The Lost World
I used to watch it after watching Jurassic Park and The Lost World in a marathon as a kid. I never saw it again for over a decade. And I fell in love with the 2014, Shin, GMK, 1954, Mothra Vs Godzilla, and the Hesei Godzilla films. I like GvK and KOTM, but after reading and watching the production, reaction, and analysis of the 98 film, I stayed away since I knew how far it really was from what Godzilla has been. But I might check it out for nostalgia sake.

My headcanon:
He's a completely different kaiju that just slightly resembles Godzilla, ableit sleeker and smaller. He could be referred to as Nise Gojira/False Godzilla kinda like how a lot of species that resemble the "True" ones are labeled.
I heard from Monsters island buddies that before he was trademarked as “Zilla” some people called him “G.I.N.O” which stood for “Godzilla In Name Only”.
He's in final wars and in some of the idw comics and he meets Godzilla
This is basically the canon as of Final Wars and the comics. Zilla is a species of prodigious Kaiju that, while smaller, less powerful, and mostly mundane (rather than semi-divine like Big G or Mothra), are able to use their quick breeding to produce large packs that can overwhelm larger creatures.
Yeah it's a bit of a soft reboot.
My take on it is they probably looked at it and thought the original design of Godzilla was from a time where no one really knew how dinosaur type creatures moved or behaved. And they thought they were just re imagining him for the modern age.
This movie was actually my first introduction to Godzilla
As a kid this was the coolest thing I ever saw, a giant monster plowing through Manhattan, I didn't know what a Godzilla was nor did I care, it was the spectacle of it all. Then I found out about Godzilla's roots, the history, the franchise, and it lead to my current love of Kaiju movies.
I did buy into the bandwagon of hating this film at one time, but looking at it now, this was a fun movie.
It may not be 100% Godzilla, but it's still a very well made Kaiju movie, albeit a very Hollywood take.
I was 8 years old when my father took me to this movie and I didn't know him all that well before he came back into my life an then shortly after passed away so that is what helps me appreciate it! ❤
Always loved this movie. Don't care what anyone says. One time this movie came up in a conversation I had with a neighbor and he immediately groaned and said, "Ugh, Roland Emmerich ruined Godzilla for so many people."
I looked at him and went "Really? It didn't ruin Godzilla for me, in fact it had the opposite effect. It GOT me into Godzilla. I became a fan cuz of that movie."
And he just shrugged it off and said. "Well, at least something good came out of it, I guess."
TriStar and Heisei were the Godzillas I grew up with. I watched 98 and The Series and then I saw the Heisei film on Encore Action. Im so sad that we never got a Godzilla 2. As much as I enjoyed other Godzilla films, I always wanna see more of this one.

I'm a massive fan of Godzilla so I understand the animosity this movie receives from the fans, but I've always enjoyed it. I really love the design of the monster, I have no issue with Godzilla being redesigned and altered for different interpretations of the character & I think that Tatopoulos's design is one of the best. I think the first act, prior to Godzilla arriving in NY is genuinely fantastic, very suspenseful, especially the attacks on the Japanese and American fishing boats. The movie is silly at times, downright ridiculous at others but really no more so than many of the Japanese films that came prior or since. My only issue is that they stripped away many of the aspects that makes Godzilla, well, Godzilla. The atomic breath should have been left in, I get why it was taken out, but removing it would be like making a JP movie and removing the T.rex's teeth. Having the monster killed by the military isn't necessarily an issue, but I think using conventional missiles essentially neuters the monster and it's inherent anti nuclear message. I would have preferred if they had taken note from the 54 movie and had the scientists and military cook up some sort of super bioweapon to take him down. The fact that Emmerich was so dismissive and disrespectful towards the source material in interviews also rubs me the wrong way, but, all that said, I like the movie, I still go back to watch it semi-regularly and as a western fan who grew up in the late 90's and early 2000's this was, for better or worse, the Godzilla of my generation.
Godzilla in this movie really reminds me of Clover in Cloverfield, in that the monster isn't really evil, it's just confused as to what's going on. When Godzilla first appears he doesn't do anything to hurt anyone, he's just looking for food. Sure, he may have destroyed a few businesses, but it wasn't out of any evil intent, he's just a huge creature. Heck, when it sees Nick as he tries taking its picture it doesn't attack, it just lowers its head to look at him as if it's curious. The only time it lashes out is when the military start firing on it and when its babies are killed, but in those instances it makes sense that it would be pissed.

The monster in the original Cloverfield was just a child of its species looking for its mother after having been captured while sleeping on the ocean floor, that's why it went on a rampage, and it only got angrier when the military began attacking it. That's also why it tried eating that guy near the end, because it learned not to take chances.
The scene where Roache bugged the mayor and then just let his umbrella go and walked off was so dope. He and Broderick also did well together. Reno stole the whole show.

This movie introduced me to the king of the monsters. Due to there being so many versions of the character, I love Godzilla as an idea. The idea of a giant dinosaur like creature that tears through a city scape.
So in my view this film is exactly what a Godzilla film is. The design is fantastic, the effects still hold up today, and there’s no real lack of focus or screen time of the creature which is how the films should always be.
I wish I could’ve been older at the time to experience all the hype and excitement. I’ve seen the marketing for this and it must’ve been an insane time to be a Godzilla fan.
When i saw this movie i was very very young and could barely remember it for years so i had this mandela effect about a movie with a giant T. rex attacking a city with a scene of velociraptors in a mall

And that is great it introduced you to Godzilla and I would love it for that too but I saw a lot of the other movies before I watched this Godzilla so to me it seems like a misrepresented Godzilla entirely it's not the worst movie but I do believe it is a bad GODZILLA movie

@@korruptor9777 Funnily enough, I grew up on the "classic" Godzilla movies. Loved them as a kid, can't stand to watch them now. I loved this movies take on Godzilla. I loved that this Godzilla relied on cunning, not being "invincible". Instead of just standing there, allowing itself to get hit with missiles, it ducked/dodged. One of my favorite scenes was when it tricked the torpedoes into hitting the sub by swimming under it. See, invincible is, in my opinion, boring. As for ridiculous moments, the "classic" Godzilla movies were full of them. Godzilla using his breath to fly? The infamous tail slide? Godzilla stepping on Minilla's tail to get him to breath fire? I honestly think this movie is only going to get better with age as Toho makes more films like Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One because those films crack open the concept of interpreting the core Godzilla idea differently: Man vs. The Monster it Created. Each film had it's own unique tone and way of expressing the threat of Godzilla. In an alternate universe where Godzilla 98 never existed, but Shin and Minus One did, I could easily see Toho making a film that's essentially G98: a film about a mortal, animalistic Godzilla that, after much destruction, is finally downed, with it's death being showcased in a tragic King Kong esque way. Godzilla 98 was more or less that, just with some 90s camp. Shin and Minus One prove that good Godzilla movies don't need the silly arbitrary fan criteria that "G-fans" cited as the reason for G98 being bad: "he can't die, the military can't hurt him, and he has to fight another monster".
It still doesnt make sense. Especially now that we know that toho was involved and did approve the script and character changes.
There was no keeping secrets in production, at all. In fact the rule about Godzilla dying they didnt even break. The rule in the book was Godzilla couldnt permantely die. There is no rule that says "A Godzilla" cant die. Thats why the film ends with the egg hatching.
Even Toho followed this rule with the anime Godzilla films, where in the first film Godzilla is killed by drill missiles then a bigger larger Godzilla shows up right before the end credits.
The "realism" argument sorta dies when you look at the monster death scene- that bridge could never support the creature's weight. Off to claim realism in one aspect of the movie when other supporting aspects completely ignore physics. Love your vids, Klayton! Keep up the great work, man :)
The Brooklyn bridge can hold 18,700 shorts or 37,400,000 pounds and it didn’t support the weight of the creature in the movie, the bridge was wobbling like a noodle everytime he took a step

@Pastry well the way in which the dinosaurs are cloned is scientifically impossible, but cloning or recreating dinosaurs will likely be doable by other means in the future.
This was actually the first Godzilla movie I saw and I loved it. I actually applaud the creative step the film makers made with this movie.
Personally, I liked the movie as a whole. Good looking monster, good cast, decent storyline, everything was pretty much a winner. It was just the name. I think if they would have named it anything else, It would have been a pretty big success. It could have been a giant monster movie with a completely different name and people would have loved it from the very start.
Not dissing this monster at all, but trying to pass it off as Godzilla is what people criticized. I'm a big Godzilla fan, have been pretty much my whole life. And I'll admit that I was a little "ehh" about the monster design.
Again, I like the movie, movie was great, the monster looked great, cast, story, and would have loved to have seen a sequel to it, but it wasn't Godzilla. If they would have given it a different name, It would have been a success.

I agree, if they had used any other name it probably would have been more successful, because when people say ‘Godzilla’ a basic design comes to mind. The monster is cool, but calling it Zilla is warrented. I think the fact that Toho bought it just to kill it off speaks a few volumes.
I saw this in theaters when I was 11 or 12 years old and it shook me. I loved it so much. Watching it today I still love it, it’s just so different and balances the cheese and pomp with the epic action and realism in such a warm way. But I value idiosyncrasies in film over all else.
When I was a kid, I can't remember the exact reason, but we all got to pick an expensive toy at the store, and I picked THIS godzilla plushie, with a hard plastic head. I slept with that thing and loved it so much, and it ate everything. I remember my mom saying something like..... THAT'S what you want?!! Why don't you get a barbie or something...
NOPE I wanted me a Godzilla! Don't know whatever happened to it, lost a lot of things from back then, I do miss it, though.
As a life long Godzilla fan I love this movie. It's better then a lot of Godzilla movies. It's actually very similar to the original in term of plot structure and the fact that Godzilla doesn't fight other monsters and dies at the end. Even his atomic breath in 54' looked more like a hot gas then a powerful blue beam. People are just hating. Those that wanted the 98 Godzilla to be more like the over the top G-movies can simply watch the Godzilla animated series that continues the story. Great stuff.

because Toho didn't change the name, they altered the trademark for a couple of years for a video game that came out to distinguish l licensing for the different godzilla adaptations and who got paid trademark royalties for what. like..... it's Godzilla. it's always been Godzilla. always will be Godzilla.
This truly is an amazing film and it’s very underrated. I remember having that cup from taco bell and never letting go of it. This was my first intro to Godzilla before I saw the TOHO movie and well let’s just say there some ones where you can tell it was shot in a month. The other about this movie was the animated series which is awesome. I did research this film and it was going to be a sequel especially with a kaiju called the Griffen but yeah I watch movie every time it comes in tv and well it’s a classic for me and my friends. Plus blockbuster was fun but I would go with my mom and dad to get power rangers, digimon, Disney movies, video games, etc. Man the 90s was amazing!

I actually really love the movie. I understand why fans hate it but beyond the point that it's whole different take on godzilla it was a great monster movie. Maybe would have done better being called something else. I'd give it a B+ or an A- score wise. Very entertaining and I still watch it from time to time.

No mention of this movie being a semi-remake of the ‘Beast From 20,000 Fathoms’ aka the film that inspired Ishirô Honda to make Godzilla ‘54?!
They were not only paying homage to the ‘54 movie but mainly the film that inspired the entire Godzilla series. I believe thats why they have that clip of a Ray Harryhausen movie in there. It’s like a wink to the source. (Obviously couldn’t put a Beast clip in there because it would have been too on the nose)
Anyways this is a point I often see over looked but I think it’s pivotal, in the debate about the importance of this films role in the Godzilla legacy.

I Ioved this movie when I was a kid. I drew some art from the movie. And the art teacher kept it as some work that kids could trace or color and take home. I didn't know after 15 years that young kids at the school were still using that piece of godzilla art I drew up until she retired in 2016. I had kids who grew up tell me that they only experienced the movie because of my drawing they used for more than a decade.
I am a long time Godzilla fan even when at its worst, and this version was NOT the worst. For all the reasons mentioned in the video this was a good movie. I think it would have done better if billed as a remake of The Beast from 20000 Fathoms, with homage to Haryhausen and a few amusing references to Godzilla films. By keeping the action high but the drama on the light side we could have had a great series of movies with some new monsters from these creative artists.
You know what? That sounds pretty interesting. It does share a lot with the Rhedosaurus in bot physiology and plot (both even died stuck in a structure while being shot at).
Actually, the 1954 Godzilla is a giant Irradiated Prehistoric Amphibious Reptile.
I love 90s era movies
Phew, for a minute there I thought I'm the only one that love the 1998 cause there were a lot of misunderstanding haters that don't understand that this Godzilla is the East side Tristar NYC version while the West side S.F. version is the Legendary Godzilla. The legendary version is good, gave him an update on :
- an elephant foot
- rounder look ( even fatter looking )
- a small head
- considered to be the tallest Godzilla ( he close to a skyscraper )
- but now, he runs. ( Even though the Tristar version is the first )
But the reason why I love the Tristar is because:
- yeah it's small but it runs. ( And run it does )
- it climbs on buildings ( original doesn't do that )
- it digs and buried itself ( original doesn't do that )
- it's thin ( an opposite of the original )
What it doesn't have is atomic breath and being inpenetrable but this usually shows that ' what would happen if there's a creature that acts like Godzilla? ' and this is the perfect example of what it'll look like in real life: a gigantic walking iguana.
I mean I understand some want to call it Zilla since it's not a God but like I said before: imagine if this was real life?
me, i've been a G-Fan since i could remember, as a kid, going to video rental stores, I *ALWAYS* picked either a random Godzilla movie, or The Transformers: The Movie. and THIS was my first time seeing a Godzilla film IN THEATERS! So, yeah, despite the hate this film gets, it has a soft spot in my heart, a guilty pleasure of mine. And when you think about it, the animated series that aired on Fox Kids is often seen as like a "redemption" among most of the haters. Plus, i can can see where you guys are comin' from, with the whole "grounding it in the REAL world" theory, it actually COULD be like some inspiration for the legendary films Godzilla, which in my honest opinion, brought out the best in THIS Godzilla movie, AND the iconic, "man in suit" films everyone puts on a pedestal. Like the legendary films Godzilla, was like if the iconic, campy "man in suit" Godzilla were realistic like the '98 film, I was literally 13 yrs old, when the '98 movie was in theaters, i saw it at a local theater, and i ENJOYED it!
I always liked this movie. I thought the Godzilla design looked good. You were talking about the humor of the movie, I always loved the scene where they're sneaking in dressed up as soldiers and Phillipe started talking like Elvis. Funny as all hell to me. Lol. I won't say it's the greatest movie of all time, but it's a fun movie. Aside from having to hear and see Matthew Broderick the whole movie. Never cared much for him

I visited New York as a kid while this movie coincidentally was being shot. They had a street shut down full of overturned cars and smoke machines, it was awesome, nothing was being shot when I saw it, just a set, but very cool.
Fun fact: I saw this movie in theaters seven times when I was a kid, and it still holds the record for the most times I've ever seen a movie in theaters. (My second-place winner is The Dark Knight with four viewings.)

I have no problem with people disliking the movie but if others are gonna go out there and say those who enjoy this film aren't true fans just because of the design not being a true Godzilla and it dying by human weapons is just absurd. What is a true Godzillla fan? Is it only liking the Toho Godzillas, him being nearly invulnerable to conventional man-made weapons, or something else? For me, a real fan of Godzilla is someone that enjoys most of the films but can be critical when necessary. Who are we to judge which Godzilla film a person enjoys? Everyone has a preference and that's okay as long as you don't shut down someone else's opinion just because its different/doesn't agree with the majority. Have a discussion. Its apparently so difficult to talk about differing opinions just like in politics.
Thanks for sharing this man! I knew I wasn't the only one that enjoyed the Emmerich Godzilla despite it being radically different from previous iterations. Back then and up to now I still call it a T-Rex on atomic steroids.
Talking about the different version of Godzilla I feel like Shin presented the idea of Godzilla having different forms, we even see that concept again later in Godzilla Singular Point. Which I kinda like.

Well I'm incredibly biased towards this movie because it came out only a few years after I was born, and it's still a favourite to this day.
I'd definitely say that this is legitimately a well made film, maybe not the best, but definitely very well paced and put together.
I remember watching this as a kid and wanting an action figure of this Godzilla really bad. I was born in the 2000’s so all Godzilla memorabilia was gone. But, low and behold the very next day I went to a flee market with my father and there was a stand that was selling old action figures and there was the small 1998 Taco Bell “Bobble Head” Godzilla and with my 5 dollars my little 6 year old self bought that sucker in a heart beat. I immediately went home and put on the 1998 film and recreated the scenes as they played out in the film. I even had small tanks and cars that used to battle with Godzilla, looking back it was honestly one of the best coincidences that ever happened to me as a child. One of my fonder memories. This movie I think was a pretty good monster flick and holds a special place in my heart.

1998 Godzilla was my childhood, I had so many toys of it. This movie holds a special place to me, its not the normal Godzilla but everything about it, then the animated kids show was awesome for a kid. Its not bad at all, and the cgi is amazing too for its time. All this hate for it is just dumb. All Godzilla movies in my opinion are at least a 7 and at most a 9.8, and this movie is a 9 to me. Its design is cool too, its more realistic to how a dinosaur would be. Also just to shout out to my grandpa who passed away in 2019, love you for getting me into Godzilla and I wish you could have lived a lil longer to see GvK because he saw the original years ago, made me happy to see Godzilla win, he thought the original movie was BS.

Count me among the fans. I haven't seen it since I was a kid... so maybe if I were to watch it now I would feel different... But I saw this in theaters and I probably watched it on VHS around 50 times.
I also really like this Godzilla movie, saw it in middle school, and loved it, and even today I admire the majority of what it did. The effects overall are good using miniatures, and some suit-mation, along with ground breaking CGI which overall looks pretty good even today. The sound design, and music is also great, the opening music, along with Godzilla's death on the Brooklyn Bridge are on par with the classic Godzilla music.
I even like Godzilla's design as it's truly unique, and yet has a majestic quality to the design. Is it too far removed from traditional Godzilla...probably, but regardless I like it. Stan Winston studios did design work for Godzilla 94 which was ultimately scrapped, and that would've been a great classical, yet updated design also. I would have loved to see that get made, and I think it would've been better received, at least by the fan base. Without the Godzilla 98 backlash we perhaps wouldn't have gotten the Godzilla movies that came after, some of which are good.
My only real gripes with Godzilla 98 are that the human characters are pretty basic, and humor is pretty hit or miss, and Godzilla isn't the unstoppable force like he was in the original classic. Apart from that I like it for what it is, not a horrible Godzilla movie, but certainly not the best narrative wise. I actually think Godzilla KOTM (2019) is similar in tone/style to Godzilla 98 and is better in terms of being like classic Toho monster movies. I definitely think Godzilla 98 is underrated, and certainly not the worst Godzilla movie, certainly not technically, or even plot wise.
This is first Godzilla movie I watched and still, I've great memories of it watching it with my family.

I've been a fan of Godzilla since the age of 2. I'm 30 today. My first Godzilla film was the Americanized 1956 version of the 1954 original Japanese masterpiece. By the time I saw '98, I had already seen Godzilla 1985, Vs. Biollante, Vs. King Ghidorah '91, Vs. Mothra the original from '64, Vs. Monster Zero, Vs. Gigan, Vs. Megalon Vs. MechaGodzilla '74 and Terror of MechaGodzilla. I was 5 when I saw '98 in theaters. As a kid, I like. I thought it was ok. But as I got older, I started seeing the flaws for what they were. As '98 being called "Godzilla", it's far from it being REALLY Godzilla. For the time period, I can see why it fits. Here's the kicker. As a random monster movie like Cloverfield (which was inspired by '98), it holds up remarkably well, but as a Godzilla film, it falls too short to be even considered that. Yes, there are considerably worse Godzilla films out there, and most are bland at best, but Godzilla, himself, was consistent. Even the films after, where Godzilla's origins are different, and Godzilla himself is radically different appearance wise (yes Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Earth, I'm looking at you), he is consistent. Now, I'm not implying that the Anime Trilogy is better than '98. Far from it. If anything, I'd rather see '98 again on the Big Screen rather than watching the Anime Trilogy ever again. For its time, '98 holds up well. I don't call him Zilla or G.I.N.O. for that matter, I just simply just say '98. Like I said, it's a great monster film. The plot and story are very solid. The suspense is really good. But as a pure Godzilla film, '98 comes up short. On a personal note, I do respectfully disagree with many of the pointers on the MonsterVerse Godzilla. However, we all have our opinions, and I respect yours. Nice video as always, Klayton.
People who hate on Godzilla 98 simply because it's different from the Toho Japanese Godzilla films remind me so much of that scene from Futurama where Fry says "people want to see the same thing they've seen a thousand times before". And it's really true. People instantly attacked this film for simply being a reimagining of the character. It's just a more realistic take. It's very Hollywood blockbuster, duh, what's who made it, Hollywood. What's the point of there being a Hollywood, American version of Godzilla anyway if has to be exactly the same as Toho's? Was it inspired by Jurassic Park and dinomania from the 90s? Yes. Just like the original Godzilla film was inspired by King Kong and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. Every movie has its inspirations. You know what a movie is called when it doesn't learn from the films that came before it? Bad.
The quote doesn't work when the problem wasn't people attacking something the moment they see something different with godzilla, it was how the take completely ignored everything godzilla was about. Gmk was different yet it still treats godzilla right, shin gojira was different yet it still treats godzilla right. Even the godzilla anime trilogy was different and despite all the waatsd potential it had, it still did godzilla right somehow. Roland Emmerich wasn't a fan and had no regard to making a godzilla that was different but still familiar. There's no justifying that.
Godzilla is recognizable and loved BECAUSE of toho, he's either a anti villain who's punishing humanity for their use of nuclear power or a anti hero who's just a force of nature who only cares about the earth but not humanity. Those 2 sides to his character are what makes godzilla himself. There is that saying *"'Don't tix what ain't broken"* and if godzilla manged to survive this long in relevancy for nearly 70 years then it's clear him remaining traditional still works.
Also g98 wasn't even inspired by jurassic Park when Dean devlin and Roland Emmerich both confirmed the jurassic Park similarities were unintentional. Gojira simply took the CONCEPT of a victimized animal (king kong) and a radioactive reptile (beast from 20,000 fathoms) and made something original out of it. G98 just took the concept of a victimized animal and unintentionally took notes from jurassic Park and slapped the name of a IP on it's title despite the end product didn't match the title.

@@Kaiju-bm4ts 1: the original 1954 movie was confirmed to have also taken inspiration from the beast from 20,000 fathoms, from him being awakened by atomic bomb testings, to him being impervious to conventional weaponry and him also being some sort of dinosaur.
2: the rhedosaurus isn't a radioactive reptile, it's an ancient dinosaur that was simply awakened by the bombs.
I was a teenager when I saw this movie, and I thought at the time that it was a fun modern update to Godzilla 🐲. As well, I loved watching the animated series that came out later that year. I think of it now as like the first Michael Bay Transformers movie, flawed but fun version of an older franchise.

The animated series is better. 25:00 that's the problem grounding Godzilla in reality makes him weak. We don't want him looking weak we want him powerful.26:48 yes keep it faithful to the source material don't change it because being grounded in realism is better when it's not. 31:44 shin was evolving so when the second half of the movie began that's when it looked like Godzilla it made sense in context with the story in that movie. Plus shin didn't die from jets firing at him. Yes bunker buster bombs hurt it's back and made him bleed but it made sense plus it gave us that spectacular atomic breath sequence. 33:06 the design for Godzilla was cool in execution the trilogy sucks. 34:39 he's different but they still keep the things that made him Godzilla. Zilla doesn't have any of those qualities that made him Godzilla. He's not durable, he runway from the military, he laids egg's, he gets killed by the military and not a super weapon like the oxygen destroyer or a super x, he was not going after mankind because of their misuse of nuclear weapons, no atomic breath, bottom line Zilla is his own monster and I accept that. He's just not Godzilla
I love this version! My only complaint was that I hated the love interest, typical 90's unnecessary gets away with way too much love interest bleh. But aside from that the movie's great. Godzilla looked great and he was sympathetic, he was only guilty of existing!

Godzilla 98 Movie Great Movie 🎥 love It 🥰
I just realized, watching this, that Godzilla 1998 is one of the five Godzilla films I've watched the MOST. It actually might be my third or fourth most viewed, tied or just behind the original 1954 film and trailing Godzilla vs Gigan and Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla (which were my introduction to the series and I own still on a double feature VHS).
If there is one person to defend Godzilla 98 it has to be my man Klayton. Glad to see I ain't the only one to think like that, the more animal like design and behaviour of the creature really is one of the greatest point of the movie. I also tend to think that Godzilla works better as a menace, like here or the original movie or even Shin Gojira than as some kind of a friendly super hero like it quickly turned to in the japaneses originals and Legendary take. I also think that Godzilla 98 is definitively Emmerich take on Jurassic Park and that's everything he had in mind while making the movie.
I actually really like this design the most. A thin, quick and nimble Godzilla was always my favorite concept.
Just finished watching this movie for the first time in maybe a decade. Honestly? I think its a VERY GOOD movie. Maybe it doesn't work well as a "Godzilla movie," but it's seriously good. The sets and effects are spectacular, the actors are all having fun, the music is exciting, and honestly the story when you consider it from Godzilla's perspective is pretty tragic. Sure, it's got some flaws of its own, but id honestly say that they're negligible. Overall, I'd give it a 5/5. Seriously fun, and the effects while a little dated are still really impressive, and there's some strong themes under the surface.
I am a fan because of this movie, it was fun, it made u think, and hope, it just made u feel, I watched the originals and up to this movie, I respect them for what they are and even liked them, but this movie made me a Godzilla fan. So yeah I agree I wish people would except this look, and feel more than they seem to, this movie makes you feel and think because it is more grounded in our reality.

I have several props from this movie. I have the left hand of the 35 foot animatronic Godzilla, the fiberglass interior of the head of one of the Godzilla rubber suits, a reference sculpt of one of the claws taken from one of the maquettes, and one of the miniature eggs from the Madison Square Garden miniature set. I have the majority of the toys and tons of merchandise for Godzilla 1998. I love this version of Godzilla and I love all Godzilla's. I proudly appreciate all of the films, shows, comics, books, games, etc. I am happy to see some defenders of this film. I recognize its flaws and why fans don't always embrace this one but I think it's great. Godzilla 1998 was a wonderful time in the theater and one of my most rewatched movies ever. Great video.

@@generalshadow9027 Ha thank you. When you collect for a long time and network around a lot sometimes you suddenly find something crazy unexpected in your possession. That's how I ended up with Hanna Barbera Godzilla animation cels and concept art or even some Trendmasters prototypes. I got the 1998 props many years ago mind you but the person who sold them to me was someone who worked in Patrick Tatopoulos' shop from what I recall. He had all these as like leftovers I guess is the word but didn't charge me a lot since to him they were just things he worked on many years back. Perhaps just hearing I was an excited fan made him do that. The only things I missed out on were one arm from a Baby Godzilla and he offered me one of the animatronic Yoshi's from the 1993 Super Mario Bros Movie. I don't recall the circumstances but I had to pass on them for economic reasons. I'd love to track down more but obviously I count my blessings that I even have the pieces I have. That giant left hand alone.

I had originally intended to do videos on those Godzilla 1998 props but I was going to build up to it. I would love to show these to fellow fans.

But then when talking with other godzilla fans I was taught that I was supposed to hate it, it was popular to diss this film. I'm glad that we are finally getting to a point where I can openly admit that I love it. It actually does a good job as a remake of the 54 original, it hits the same beats while still doing its own thing. The cinematography is fantastic. All the points you guys made I am completely in agreement..
Honestly the reason people didn’t like it was because it had the Godzilla name attached to it and there were different expectations, if they dropped the Godzilla name this movie would have a much more positive reception

Godzilla '98 is easily the most awesome and gorgeous looking Godzilla and my personal favourite incarnation and Godzilla-film! It's one of the big classic masterpieces of the 90's along with Tremors, Alien 3, Predator 2, Jurassic Park, The Lost World, Mighty Joe Young, Independence Day, Alien Resurrection, Star Wars, Anaconda, and Lake Placid! I think roughly the period between the 80's, 90's, and 2000's was a golden age of creature features and special effects! I also still don't get the comparison between the Baby Godzillas and the JP Raptors. That still feels like a very odd comparison that I never got at any point watching this movie. I also always thought many of the arguments against the film made no sense. Still waiting for Godzilla 2 to this day (as well as a continuation to the animated series)!

I saw Godzilla 98 opening night when I was 15 and I still love it. I remember MTV promoted the hell out of it. I just watched it again tonight and wanted to find some videos of people talking about it which is how I came across this video. I'm glad there are other people out there that love the movie too.

I love this movie, i saw it it I was 4 ysars old, and it was the only Godzilla movie I would see in theaters until 2014, but it is simply not godzilla. You say that his being killed by the military and his animal nature make him more like the original than even Shin Godzilla, but here is the problem. Every good character has traits that define them. Everyone knows the Hulk is green and angry, those are his traits. James bond is a womanizer and extremely resourceful. Godzillas are that he's almost indestructible, he's so large that he doesn't even register humans much like humans are with ants, and he breaths radioactive fire. This movie ignores every single one of those distinguishing traits. This monster has nothing in common with the original, except his badass roar. His design is really good, but not for Godzilla. This movie is pretty good, but you could call it Rampage and no one would argue with you. Good movie, outstanding music, awesome creature design, but it'd just not Godzilla.

The main reason why this movie is so good is the monster. The iguana turning into this towering fish eating monster from a plant eating herbivore is amazing. The evolution alone is up there with Shin Gojira.
98's nowhere even close to the worst Godzilla film. That will forever be Godzilla's Revenge, which is, like, 60% reused footage from previous films.
