I think Paul McCartney, not speaking French, got the right person to translate it originally (I heard that story), but even at the time the lyrics must have been printed wrong (since most people with approximate French would be enclined to wrongly translate the absence of the article in "words" with the definite article "les", when in this context it is the indefinite article "des").
