    • @Charmander_R27

What he didn't really articulate, was that D4 is repetitive even while simply playing through the campaign. D2 gets repetitive in the end-game, sure, but it doesn't really feel that way just playing through the story like D4 does due to the dungeons. Sure you can skip the dungeons to some extent, but it doesn't feel that way since they're often the subject of the side quests.
I'm not a D4 hater, but so far it feels like mostly a D3 clone (and I loved D3 so its fine).

@@Charmander_R27 bro what the fuck are you talking about? It’s a few hours worth of campaign that is basically the same exact shit with a story and really doesn’t even have any “dungeons” it’s just the same boss rooms or tombs runs you go into with no actual randomness baked into it, it’s just a bunch of premade maps it cycles through that you can immediately tell where to go once you’ve played it a bit. Diablo II is unarguably the most repetitive stale arpg there is. It was amazing for its time but it’s long past that time and it’s trash compared to current days gaming. There is nothing special about the campaign and I would strongly argue as someone who absolutely HATES d3 that d3 campaign is way better than d2 campaign. And if you want to talk about d4 campaign well you haven’t even played it. You might have slammed the beta hard a few times of course it’s not gonna be exciting when you play the same 1 act 5+ times back to back within 2 days. The fuck? D2 shill logic is insane.

@@benjaminghazi787 and D4 there's even no randomness, just like D3 clone of run through hall ways with less crowded monsters, there are some interesting quests but the rest is basically you run a looong way to the objectives marked on map - like every modern game out there. D2 has it charm as somewhat like Dark Souls of ARPG, first time you play it, you can die every corner when you open a door in a dungeon, you don't know where to go beside the description on your quest that you need to look for on your own, because you have no hand-holding like modern ARPG - just like how Dark Souls still success despite being indifferent to other genres

Hello. One note about level randomization in Diablo ( that is extremally old feature btw ):
    - fully randomized levels were already in Diablo 1 ( well, almost - that is from existing room layouts )
    - Diablo 2 gets pseudo-randomized levels with predesigned themes, and actually this is more advanced feature that allows to keep better control over the theme of the level. Generally speaking, it is harder to make randomization that will keep specific pattern than full randomization :)

There are so many awsome mods since 2001 that really built on the base game around the time blizzard stopped creating any new meaningful content (1.10). There was a great private server called D2 Maniacs where Median mod was first hosted, along with many other amazing mods. PD2 and POD have just built on this baseline set by previous modders, but have done a great job of balancing the game further and giving great endgame content.

I think the opposite is true with runewords - they have not yet added them BECAUSE they know how they work. Runewords in D2 killed 90% of gearing options. During levelling the focus was always to gain runes (countess farming) to create the must have runewords for chest, head, weapon etc. every character I made regardless of class or spec had to have a stealth chest (lvl 17 i think) which is then used for the entirety of the levelling process (for the most part). the choices of endgame chestpiece were basically enigma or fortitude runewords depending on what your class and spec needed. Spirit monarch was the shield of choice for almost all endgame sorc builds - etc. I had some really powerful unique items drop that would have been build defining for my character were it not for a runeword (grief) rendering ALL drops worthless. The endgame basically became a grind for runes to either use as currency for charms or to roll a new runeword. It became so that only a couple of items were of any use. This in turn reduced the value of the useless items to next to nothing so you couldn't even trade these extremely rare drops for any runes worth anything. Tyrael's Might - supposedly the rarest drop in the game - wasn't even worth a Ber (1 of the runes required to make enigma along with Jah which was even more expensive.) I found it was more profitable to use my horker barb to endlessly farm Trav - picking up all gems - cubing them to perfects and trading those gems for runes. (gems are used for crafting the bis Amulets). The other issue - without trade you are limited to making runewords only with runes you have found, the drop rates of the high runes would need to be better than D2 as in 20 years of playing I NEVER had a Jah rune drop. I had to trade mountains (like 1000s) of Gems to get the Jah rune for my enigma. With the ability to craft rares into legendaries, reroll stats on items, and have build defining uniques - where exactly do runewords fit in? Are they intended to be ultra rare craftables that rival uniques for the drop chance of the required runes? Are they to be overpowered levelling items? will the runes be tradeable? do they want runewords to eclipse 90% of gear choices? I think applying them to a season with the option of removing them the following season if they dont work correctly is a smart idea

I loved runewords, but I have to agree it's unfortunate how they made most uniques obsolete. Especially those +2 skills sword and shield runewords were basically (if not actually) better than any unique endgame alternative, and I think you could use them from level 40 or even earlier. I remember those days before runewords became the meta, where you used actual uniques in lategame builds, like Grandfather or Eaglehorn. I'm honestly torn on this, on a principled level it is unfortunate (and arguably bad design) that one is clearly the better choice. On the other hand I really loved runewords the way they were. If I was to redesign D2 myself I would probably attempt to make them more balanced, though.

Your idea on how D2 maps are done is.. mostly right, there are different variants of it but most of the maps are only pseudo random with fairly predictable patterns. Durance of hate level 2 going to 3 as an example since mephisto farm is pretty popular, from the waypoint the entrance to 3 will always face counterclockwise to the direction the durance of hate 2 portal exits from, but sometimes the map will loop around on itself so if you're exiting the portal south you'll immediately head east but the actual entrance was to the west while heading east to the portal.

i perssonally liked the rarity settings and possibilitys in d2. had a stormshield, max block socceres that was tanky as fuck. you had charms and so many things that combined made you very strong. but most off all it was the item hunting. the tradeoffs from magic find and strength. and the need for optimization. you had players off meta, having insanly strong builds. physical damage reduction, block rate, block speed, magic absorb, reduced damage etc, all were really well balanced. and every class was differently strong. amazone & sorc were stronger, but an insansly equiped barb could deal with it.
and i think the one thing that made d2 people completly addictive was the adrenalin rush when an item dropped. not because it was a good feature, but because it felt real, direct and intense since others could grab it.

D2 has better balance in terms of leveling and monster difficulty scaling. Itemisation is also better and dosnt make you super hyper demolisher with floating numbers. Specific item give you specific skill addition that you can use as advantage like for example highlords wrath amulet used on ubers etc. The strongest and best items are made orcrunes and this is where the end game begins to get the best items you can made and to make them you need the rarest Runes dropped in game in order to increase that chance a trade system comes to side. I know botting, hacking, duping and d2jsp crap which kill it all but at least the community’s trading is there. D4 need work and re balance is different game but for now it should be called Diaablo 4 Dungeons and Dungeons.

The main thing I always appreciated in D2 over any other ARPG (including PoE) is the atmosphere that is created by the design of the maps and monsters and the incredible soundtrack. The general loot and item design is probably on par with games like PoE, definitely simpler but also in a way more elegant. There are almost no throwaway uniques in D2 compared to the 90% of trash you find in PoE. Most of the time there is a use for each unique either for leveling or endgame purposes. If D2 had a fleshed out endgame I think it would be a superior game to modern ARPGs in a lot of ways.
Going through the acts / campaign was fun every time thanks to said leveling uniques and sets you found along the way, the great world design and music, and generally polished combat and enemy design. You also felt the power increase with each level, as you unlocked new skills or improved your main skill. It just worked on so many levels. Up until act 5 hell i think D2 is still my favorite ARPG to this day. The main issue is the lack of true endgame. Back in the day endgame basically amounted to MF runs and trading, but without an active community half of that falls away. So usually you stick to a playthrough or two every couple of years, or playing HC as far as you can.

Imo, a good arpg should need to include a lot of mechanics to masters. One example of the mechanics in D2 that I don't remmeber seeing at all in d3, is having something like 90% of maps being pseudo random, 5% fully random and a 5% of non random map make it that you can master the environnement by learning some of the patterns but in d2 most of those patterns are almost unoticable if you don't make an effort to find them.
This end up implying 2 things, if you play for a while you eventually start to have an uncouncious idea of where to go in a lot of maps making it rewarding, and if you want to take it to the next step, you can try to learn them and turn it into a knowledge making it even more rewarding.
The more optionnal the mastering is the better it probably is. Which means you can become very good at the game going through it more efficiently but you can still go through without mastering it but it should be harder and take more time.
Also I don't think end-game repetitivness in an arpg is inherently bad, it just depends on the rewards at the end being subjectively worth it or not for the players.
PVP is a thing in D2, I mostly play HC (permadeath) and there is also players killing that exist (which I kind of like but not everyone does) making things even more challenging. When duels happens, in HC you need to know what your doing.

I knew where to corner camp or drag them through mobs.
But back then, like 90%of the player base used map hacks, most SOJs were dupes, etc. The economy was trash, and hacking was everywhere... if random levels were such an amazing mechanic, people wouldn't be constantly bypassing that mechanic by all means necessary, lol.

It's hard to describe what makes diablo 2 so enjoyable compared to other arpgs. I think open trade and completely unbound items is a big factor. In things like d3 when you are done with the items on your char, you are done. You can start a new char and do everything from scratch, but playing the other one with good gear is kinda pointless. Because loot has become pointless. In D2, farming with a perfectly geared char is super fun and efficient because you accumulate currency or find items that let you play a new char that can farm other specific things. That is the next thing. In D4 you have a main char that does everything. In d2 you have a Java for cows. A necro for world stone, a tele sorc for keys and cry barb for pit etc etc.
And the there are people who just use the game as a trading sim because it has a good balance of currencies, anyone can farm perfect gems that are needed by higher lvl players for crafting etc. And on top of that there is always this chance whatever you do, that a BER will drop that can change your whole game instantly! It's always exciting.

Exactly, Diablo now lives only off its big name. Back then the whole fighting experience in Diablo 2 in birds eyes view with a lot of left clicks was super new, super fresh and modern. It was simply peak for its time. But for modern standards it’s super boring. At least on my opinion after playing d3 after d2.
The holding of outdated mechanisms happens all the time in the world, in big companies or even in country’s economies, until they don’t give profit, cause nobody gives up on things that gave success in the past, even if it’s bad and won’t guarantee success in the future.
It just seems boring. Doesn’t appeal to me at all.
So my whole point: People crave for the experience they had with D2, where everything was exciting and new, not with the mechanics or the style of the game itself.

One of blizzards game design goals is to have your loot be valuable.
But if you can trade trash items for the good drop someone else got that you want it reduces the value of the items you find.
So in their eyes it's a cursed design problem, so they decided to remove trading.

So if you want to farm hard for your last piece while at max level it isn't 5x harder because you are getting drops for everything, but having the option makes it so you can farm for some gear for a class you want to play. You already did all the content, it's no different than gathering stones and gambling on another char. It just makes it easier.

I loved Diablo 2, and didn't really like DIablo 3. The reason I like D2 better was that the items interacted in nonlinear ways. Increased attack speed had breakpoints, so you would target your build to hit a specific %increased attack speed exactly. Or you'd get exactly 75% resistances, because going over is wasted. There was the tradeoff of whether you get 75% physical damage resist, or lower, but increase the elemental resistance cap. You didn't have to be that optimal, but I got into PvP. And then low level dueling, and making weird PvE challenge builds that are only possible with a lot of knowledge of the game. I didn't play D3 for that long, because the complexity wasn't there. The damage/resistance formulas were set up so that you would pretty much max out a formula to get the most DPS and effective HP. I disliked the always online single player aspect, the auction house, the way vendor RNG worked(you could cycle the RNG to get a good roll and buy a TON of that same item -- you'd see 20 of the same exact blue item in the auction house, which is MUCH better that anything you have, because someone got an insanely good vendor roll (and probably spent hours cycling it to do so, instead of actually farming drops, and bought a boatload of them) I stopped playing before they added the paragon levels and all that, so I can't say if they fixed things since then. I just lost interest.

Diablo 4 blew me away, it is f**king stunning...maybe us old schoolers appreciate the effort more being around when 3dfx open GL was first introduced and as Asmon said, there wasn't a massive amount to play back then. D2 was amazing and my favorite game when i was 10 years old. When i came back at the age of 34 it made me realize how repetitive it is. Rush a toon, power level and then farm. The nostalgia was great for a few weeks.

I think D4 is going to do fine but I'm probably not going to like it because I don't typically like games that require a lot of upgrade material to improve weapons. When I get a legendary I don't want to feel like it's the just the first step. It reminds me of gacha games where getting an SSR is cool for 30 seconds and then you start grinding XP missions for hours.

What I have issues with in D2 is the fact that once you clear Hell, what's the point of replaying the game? You get better gear for what? To climb up the ladder we have now in D2R? PVP?
D3's rifts are repetitive but you farm better gear so you can go up on the GR level you are playing. It gets boring after a while but at least there is purpose on doing that.

When you look at the genre, it is difficult to find any other Top-Down ARPG that has the same level of hype, the closes was the last update to POE. One thing that I'm particularly hopeful of with this game is that it seems they listened to a lot of feedback from the first Beta so we will wait and see what happens.
D2R from the get go seemed like it was focused on people that never played the game back then and refused to play it nowadays with the original resolution so there was no incentive in adding additional content for us who played the game for years. In the, if we like it or not, the money is what is driving these decisions. I respect your opinion, hopefully you'll find enjoyment in D4 somehow.

D2 maps are procedurally generated using a pre-built palette of tiles or blocks for each zone. The Act 3 Jungle will never spawn with desert tiles, but each iteration of the jungle will be unique. Some iterations may be very similar, while others will be wildly different. D2 also features a handful of pre-determined maps (such as the Den of Evil), similar to how D4 spawns its maps. There can be no debate that D2's maps, while not totally random, are significantly closer to true randomness than D4's maps.

These people with zero clue how RNG works in D2 hahahaha. Compared to D3/D4... D2 is RNG galore plus it's in fact true RNG. D3 wasn't even RNG - both items and maps. D3 had zero map randomization. D3 had timers that dynamically changed your MF based on how bad luck you had. Nothing RNG about that - in fact it's a fixed RNG system similar to slot machines.

Something I can give D2 is the pvp was a lot of fun. That’s what made grinding worth it, trying to make a pvp character that could compete. That’s what made d3 become boring is the lack of pvp. After a while the grind seems pointless. Getting a level higher greater rift is nowhere near as rewarding as being a top dog pvper

I get what he mean by dungeons. In D2 every place is unique. Then if u choose to farm a certain area in d2 so you get the repetitive experience that’s up to you but in D4 the are all more or less the same. Get these 2 items open a door fight the boss. Even the layout is about the same so that and the fact they are so big gets me bored with them in no time.
Now also you got terror zones that gives u the best items in the game and that area change every hour meaning you won’t get a repetitive experience since all dungeons are unique.

You are so right about Diablo 2 Asmon !
I did play the hell out of it back in the days, and yeah, all we did was to send a sorceress, to find the entrance to Baal's Minions, then she would open up a TP there, and we would all join in, to kill Baal, or Mephisto. These were the only things left to do after u finished the campaign... ohh and trading with other players, and starting new characters based on the drop we got, from those infinite runs! :))) The good thing was that the drop was so random, and that made the game (at least for me), very challenging. Looking for better gear, all the time. Ohh and the MF ( magic find) gear, was a thing. Placing perfect Topaz gems in armor and helmets, and giving the final blow to the boss, with it, would increase your chances of getting a legendary drop. As for the Runes, and "RuneWords", they became a thing, when everybody pretty much got bored of doing the same TWO runs all day long, and you could mix 3 to 5, or 6 runes in a specific order, in a 3-6 piece of gear ( helmets, armor, polearm, sword, etc), and would get you some overpowered gear. And suddenly, everybody forgot about Baal and Mephisto, and started to do COW-Runs, to find socketed gear. I remember putting this gear on my "paladin mercenary" and he was almost able to kill Baal alone on Hell difficulty. :)))
