• RAM 1500 V6 3.6L Penta...
I hope everyone is having a good weekend! I figured It was time to get into one of these trucks and take it for a drive and see how I liked it. I have heard a couple of things about these v6 penstastar engines in the ram 1500's and the number 1 things is that its slow and underpowered. Now that is kind of true but you'll see what I mean.
I drove a 2023 fifth gen ram 1500 v6 with the e-torque and a 2022 fourth gen ram 1500 classic with the 3.6L v6 to really see if there is a noticeable difference with the e-torque system. and to be fair I really didn't notice anything different between the two trucks.
What I did notice is how much more refined the 5th gen ram 1500 trucks are compared to the 4th gen ram 1500's. it really surprised me and the difference was so obvious driving them both one after another.
the pros of the v6 3.6L penstastar engine.
1. this engine is amazing smooth while driving. the engines shifts very well and it is a seamless engine. you barely notice the engine is running when cruising down the road because it is so smooth.
2. high end power. I was a little surprised with the high rpm speed. once this truck gets above 3,000 rpm this smaller v6 will move this truck very well. something I was not expecting.
the Cons about this engine
1. The sound really throws me off. I like the v8 rumble and the v6 is greatly lacking. it just sounds like your run of the mill mini van.
2. low end torque. the lower end rpm's are lacking power. this was very evident around the city you really needed to get the throttle into it before this truck would really move. the v8 hemi has much better throttle response at lower rpms.
Take it Leave it
1. the E-torque system was not really that impressive to me. I honestly didn't even notice it. but it comes standard so its not going to cost you anything and odds are it will save you fuel but I thought It would be more effective and noticeable while on the road in these ram 1500's
2. fuel economy. I got just under 17mpg on my trip. this was not that impressive and something that really isn't going to push me to buying this engine.
Anyways guys I hoped you like the video!

for 99% of people the v6 works perfectly fine. Better fuel economy, Ok towing, and super quiet interior. That 5.7 roar gets tiring after awhile. Every mechanic has said the v6 is far more reliable than the 5.7. Also that ecodiesel? What a POS!!
The warlock probably had the 3.55 gear, the big horn probably the 3.21. That would negate any advantage of the e-torque. Combine the e-torque with the 3.55 and you have a truck that will do everything that about 90% of the truck buying population needs.
Just bought a 2024 Ram 1500 Lone Star with the V6. Literally today March 29, 2024. So far it is nice. Definitely different from my 2018 Ford F-150 with a 5.0 V8. I traded it in for this ram. But it’s a good different. I’m not a towing hauling kinda guy, so the V8 wasn’t a necessity for me. I will come back to give a more detailed update.
Good luck with it! That's great. I don't need a V8, and I'd like to think this engine has been around long enough to make this truck reliable. I don't tow, and this would be my regular vehicle. Nice to have for dump runs and such. You can turn off the Auto Stop Start right?
I love the Pentastar in the crew cab 4x4 1500 classic. It's great for commuting, camping trips, mulch hauls, landscaping trailer and the like-but with WAY more interior space than a small or midsize truck. Picked ours up for under 25K 2 years old. Recently got 21MPG with 6 passengers on an 1100 mile trip. Very happy.
Just curious as to how many miles were on it? I to am looking for one around the same year and same price range. Thanks!

do you still like your RAM ... Im looking hard at a 2022 is the 3.6 enough power for your 4X4 truck? Im not a haul guy tow once in a while sub 7K lbs
this is me, I tow a 4k boat, all of 10 miles. this odd engine might work for me.@@sadsciuidae3425
the pentastar is a turd tbf.Its ok at best to drive around but that thing is struggling when you start to pull anything heavy. Its not a truck at all, more like an over sized suv.
imagine if you drove the 1500 BEFORE while now in the mini-van "WOW this sounds like the RAM 1500 truck !!!
I have a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L with this engine. I tow infrequently but when I do, it's a car trailer loaded up to and sometimes a bit over the 6200lb limit. Car does just fine and although more power would be nice, is adequate even on hills and gets over 20mpg when I'm not towing. It gets a lot of hate, but it's really not a bad engine.
I just got my first Ram 1500 3.6l e torque Quad cab. I put 600 miles on it, traveling out of state to visit friends. It is a super nice truck and rides great. It managed to get 20.5 mpg doing 70 to 80 mph. Love the truck.
OK so I don't have allt of money but buying a new truck this week well new to me I'm currently torn between a 2019 ram quad cab with the v6 67k miles and a 2015 ram quad cab hemi 97k on it same price I only drive around town and pull my lill boat would you choose the v6?
@@fathersonsrcpoop9905I would shop around almost bought one used for 30k . I managed to get a new one for 37k out the door
thanks for a real world review these people diss a truck for sound a motor size i want a truck but i do not need a V8 i do light work and just carry a motorcycle this is good enough i just looked at one today at the dealership they are very nice.
Which did you choose? I would vote for the '19 .@@fathersonsrcpoop9905
I’ve recently bought one and I don’t think it lacks power. That said I’ve only been able to get about 17.8 at best on combine fuel economy. It advertises better, anybody know if that’s just due to break in or not? I drive pretty easy with it the whole time
Another very informative video!! Please keep them coming !! Love learning from you !
thanks pal!!!
Alex, that was a very good comparison video between the two trucks. With my Hemi rebel, I can definitely feel the e-torque from a dead stop. Stay warm! Bill from Linglestown, Pennsylvania
That feeling of the engine starting to open up & start producing torque & power is probably the Variable Valve Timing system kicking in. 3K plus seems to be the sweet spot on all of my vehicles with VVT engines as the camshaft phasers come alive & start to do their thing.
Just bought a blacked out tradesman with the v6. Honestly, if I could have afforded the 8 I would have liked it more but…I do feel like my truck has plenty of get up and go. That said…I’ve only been able to get 17.8 at best driving super easy with it. Has anybody else here gotten better? I live in iowa so it’s pretty flat and I thought it would get better
I get around 22.5 and that is mixed highway/running errands. I get ~ 27.5 highway driving an hour to work. Running errands around town I am in western nj by pa. It is a lot of mountain roads and my mpg stays around 22.5. Lots of state police so I am going speed limit. Hope that helps
@@hortoon I appreciate your response. Mines been doing better but not as good as yours yet. Prob still breaking in. I’m averaging around 18…iowa and all flat.hopefully I can get closer to your numbers soon
My v6 is for a commuter and light hauling. The only reason I didn’t do a mid size truck with a V6 is because of the space. It’s really tight with car seats even with the crew cab. So I went full size for that reason. I love the truck! I have the BTS edition. My next truck will most likely be 6.4, but that will be when the kids are much older and I need the power for hauling something bigger.
I have 6.4 It's annoying that's the fuel and parts are more expensive. I want a 3.6 but I imagine I'd probably regret it if I switched
do you still like your Ram 3.6 ? Im looking hard right now ...
@@sadsciuidae3425 yes, still love the truck but the etorque motor has caused a couple stalls on me because of software issues. Love the truck but I’m avoiding etorque in the future.
e torque is new to me ... Kiss thanks@@jesserosenbaum9222
I just bought a 2022 1500 with the same engine . Coming from a 2007 Tundra with the 5.7 I do notice a big difference but overall it does what I need as a work truck and my main transportation. Better on gas than the Tundra. Hwy mileage is really good at 10.7 . For a 4x4 truck . It's enough power for daily use and tows a cargo trailer fairly well. Not a power house but like you said it is what it is. I like it . Good honest review and your observations are bang on . Oh ya, I don't mind the sound. It's quiet and I like that. I'm an old guy.
I have a 5th gen v6 myself. It's definitely tuned to try and stay in the highest gear possible until you finally jam the pedal. It can be annoying at times, but there are some quirks you learn as you drive it to make it more user friendly. For example, I've noticed that quickly depressing the pedal gives a much faster response than slowly depressing it to the same position. The truck also tends to shift to a higher gear too quickly in my opinion. Depressing the pedal a little more at around 20 MPH keeps the acceleration constant instead of bogging down. It's weird fighting the computer to get what you want, but I still love the truck none the less.
That's what a Pedal commander or another throttle controller would do. Eliminate the throttle lag.
Banks throttle controller
I drive short trips into town, haul the kiddos the occasional couch some lumber and mulch. For me it's perfect, I have no issues. If I were towing heavy loads or driving long Hwy trips I would agree the other choices make more sense.
MY 2018 Bighorn, runs great plenty of Power Straight up, no bogging down bs, I don't miss my Ram 2500 diesel, fuel pump prices suck, the 3.6 amazing mpg...
Good review! I like this truck. Ram gives you many options depending on your needs. In a city environment, where you are hauling the family around, helping your friend move, going to the lumber store, and doing typical truck things, this truck is perfect. People who buy diesels and V-8’s and just drive around town or back and forth to work are just wasting money, which is great if you’re rich.
Yes sir. this is a great truck for someone who is looking to do "light" truck work in and around town and not be drowning in fuel costs lol!
V8's are only for rich people? False.
The Fuel Economy on a V8 isn’t that bad, numbers like L/KM or MPG are only half the picture. The rest is driving habits, the town you live, your schedule. If what you do is driving for work than a V8 isn’t an option for you (unless you happen to like the engine). As a daily driver it’s still quite fine, personally I prefer a V8 (I have the 5.7 in my truck) but I know people more than happy with their 6 banger or 4 banger. It’s also a $25 difference between filling up my moms i4 and my truck for our comparative driving habits.
@@wolffztalksknives7814 it really is that bad. I've reviewed this for months and currently drive a 22 F150 V6 ecoboost and get 24 mpg and most Ram's v8 get 14-18 mpg it's nowhere near the 17-22 mpg listed. That adds up quickly to the wallet. Like the OP mentioned if you drive a lot with minimal towing the V6 is the better option. If you need the power of the v8 then understandable, if you want it for the noise and power that's cool too. But, for the wallet and better overall mpg the v6 is the best option. Which is why dodge is going to the hurricane engine.
@@ig3134 I clearly said if you drive a lot for work a v6 was a better option. Actually I said a v8 wasn’t an option for that person. Driving habits, your town size, play a bigger role which is something people tend to ignore in conversation. Despite having a heavy foot unless I’m driving a highway I don’t press down more than 1/4 of the pedal, but I also live in a relatively small town with just over a 110k population where you can go from one end to another in 40mins with moderate traffic. Would a EB be beneficial? Never said it wasn’t but in just over 2 weeks of daily driving (groceries on weekends, coffee, eating out, going to a friends, the occasional short 90 min round trip just outta town limits) my tank sits around between 1/4 & a 1/2. Costs about $90-$100 depending on gas price of 89 to fill from there. I get not everyone can pay to fill their tank but most people (at least here) aren’t driving full sized trucks to begin with they’re driving midsized trucks, crossovers & sedans. All of which are more efficient with much smaller tanks.
Edit: the hurricane is an inline 6 not a V6. The MPG difference is minimal between a S/O Hurricane and a Hemi at least currently, that’ll probably change down the road.
If it's primarily a grocery getter, child hauler and work commuter with the occasional furniture hauling I'd say this is the way to go over a v8 gasser. As bad as I'd like a v8, I just cannot justify spending that much money on gas. That's alot of savings down the drain. But then again, diesel prices are high...So maybe it evens out...?
I'm thinking this truck/motor combo in 4wd will tow my 3,500lb boat/trailer combination just fine, and be able to launch/recover he same off some fairly crude ramps.
12:50 to 13:05 BANKS makes a throttle controler that is a huge help for "throttle response".
Having a Ram 2500 Hemi and previously two 4th gen 1500 hemis and one fifth gen hemi 1500, I would rent them when visiting home. (Sign up for cheapest car/upgrade when you get there generally get a deal). Once, they gave me a gen 4 six banger, non etorque and to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised. I drove it for a week and got like 22 mpg Now, if all you "live in the suburbs, wanted was a full size pick up only had an under to 5K trailer for camping, I'd likely go for it. So, your observations pretty much mirror mine... Moving from a 2021 1500 to a 22 2500, I miss the fifth gen ride/inside on the 1500 particularly the space in back...
I so wish I could get a 5th Gen V6 with out the etorque. I'm forced to get a classic.
I just bought a '23 Big Horn Crew 4X4 with the 3.6 Pentastar eTorque and standard 3.21 axle ratio. I was able to get 23-24 mpg, keeping the speed between 65-69, right off the lot while driving it home (about 500 miles). I agree with the motor sound (nothing spectacular) and low RPM torque feel (sluggish). I've owned a 5.7 Chevy and there is a huge power difference and feel off the line. I needed (okay perhaps wanted) a truck and this 5th gen Ram truck rides really well and is comfortable. The ride quality was the main reason I bought it.
I'm thinking of adding a Magnaflow exhaust and I've been looking into the pedal commander to see if that would help the pedal feel off the line. Let me know if you have any thoughts on either of those mods.
That’s weird your cpu on the firewall, my 5th gen power wagon (2019)has it on the passenger side fender. I onloknow from maintenance and adding the Diablo Sport Pulsar to it. Ty for another great video btw
Important to note when it comes to drive/ride quality, you were driving the Warlock trim, which has the offroad suspension package (that's what my dealer told me, I own a V6 Warlock). It's a much firmer ride.
I got the bighorn e torque and it drives so smooth at least compared to my 2020 tundra
Great review! My 3.6 in my 2017 Wrangler JKU served me well except for the garbage oil cooler I had to replace, but other than that great little engine. Traded it in on my RAM. I wouldn't want the 3.6 in a truck. I will stick with my 2022 6.4 2500! 😊 Love it!
I would agree probably an awesome engine in the jeeps! lol can't go wrong with the 6.4!
@@TheGettyAdventuresmpg Is not cool. HA!
the sound is the first thing mentioned?
What about engineering/design, performance, reliability -you know, things that actually matter?
What about the color? Smell? Aren't these shallow details at least as important as sound of the engine?
What would be interesting to me is whether the 3.6 would be sufficient (and not overkill) for particular uses and whether or not the lack of ultimate power is a reasonable sacrifice for most users if reliability and cost are the primary goals.
Love your reviews; very informative. You make pretty clear differentiations between the facts and your opinions, which is useful.
My 22 etourqe V6 is just fine. I get 20-25 mpg. I don't feel any "lag" as you describe, and you didn't even talk about the etourqe stop start which is so smooth. It starts within 400 milliseconds and you dont even feel it. And the fact that this vehicle is classified as a "mild hybrid". A 20 minute road test will not tell you the full attributes of any vehicle.
I agree the v6 ram really needs a good 30 minutes to an hour of road testing before you really see what it's capable of. And you need to really take it for a highway drive for at least 30 minutes to see the good fuel economy numbers as around town or city in stop go they start to guzzle quite a bit of fuel. As for etorque I couldn't tell ya since I drive a 2018 v6 but for the lag I only feel lag when I go to floor sometimes usually at highway speed when I want to make a quick pass but overall it's super smooth for sure and very fuel efficient on the highway. Mine is over 100k kms now so I've got lots experience now and the best fuel economy numbers u ever saw were 9L per 100kms on the highway and averaged about 9.5 to 10L per 100kms very often if I was highway driving often.
@Ben p But if I was going to do regular towing I will agree with you the V8 is the only way to go. I only tow once, or maybe twice a year. And it makes that six work hard. But 99% of time I'm in town and it's absolutely perfect for me. But I should have got the 3.92's. But I can't complain.
@Kidd 100 percent agree there! It's not really meant to be a heavy tow rig but it's perfect for just pulling a boat around or a light camping trailer if you only get out maybe a few times or less a year. Mine has the 3.55 gears in it so it does have the higher tow rating but I'm not wanting to push my engine over it's limits just to tow unless it's an emergency situation. But yes it's perfect for highway or in town!
you aren't wrong about a 30 minute road test. I Just thought the e-torque would be a noticeable difference and to me it wasn't.
Exactly. Great truck.
"Yeah, it does sound like a minivan."😂
I like how it shadowed save big on the back seat of the E torque ram 1500
the stickers were a little obnoxious lmao!
I just got a BIGHORN 5.7 Hemi ….i love it , I wouldn’t se myself on a V6 ram…the truck is so big.
I just bought a 2023 1500 classic Warlock, it has the tow pack so it has the 355 gears, it is fine as far as i am concerned regarding power. It barely has 500 miles so i havent tried to step on it and i didn't buy it for that anyway. I get 16.8 2nd fill up, wouldn't have minded a HEMI but it was on the lot and i got a great price meaning 9 grand off list. I had a 2023 Tuscon SEL AWD and the engine is MUCH quieter than that so i traded that in which was paid for, for me a pick-up is more useful than an SUV.
I have a 2015 bighorn two-wheel drive regular cab. 321 gears are not sluggish in this 4800 lb truck. I have just over 85,000 mi on it and at least 80% if not 85% of those miles are in town driving back and forth three miles to work. My overall actual calculated mileage since the day I got the truck is 22.3. if I drive on the highway at a steady 60 mph speed, I can average between 26 and 27 miles to the gallon. If I speed up to 67 then it drops the 25. If I speed up to 72 then it drops the 24. In town I average probably 20 during the summer and about 19 or 18 in the very coldest part of Wisconsin Winters. The truck is really exceeded my expectations and if I don't wreck it I can see it lasting another 12 to 15 years. Only routine maintenance over the last 9 years.
Running this truck and engine for months now. As an everyday driver, you cant go wrong with this package. the only time not to consider this is when your towing anything over 3000lbs. otherwise it handles everyday "Truck Things" perfectly..
My new company provided work truck is a 5th gen ram V6 etorque and will be arriving in a few weeks so I guess I get to find out how good or bad they are.
It is my understanding that the etorque also helps to 'rev match' the up and downshifts and smooths out the shifts. I was wondering if it is a noticeable effect. I think this is important since the relative low torque of the v6 would necessitate a greater amount of shifts and if the shifts were smooth an unnoticeable it would make for a much better experience.
Well, since I've never driven a Grand Caravan it sounds great to me.
Dude, those Caravans rip. 😂
They won't break speed records, but they hurt plenty of feelings.
I have a 2018 ram 1500 with the 3.6L and honestly I don't really notice the low end sluggishness unless I'm in stop go crawling traffic maybe but i do notice that there is pedal lag when you floor it before the truck starts to really move. Now for the sound I totally agree how quiet and not truck like it is but that's an easy fix I highly suggest swapping out the muffler for something like a flowmaster super 40/44 if it's got the single exit or if it's got factory dual exhaust go for the flowmaster outlaw muffler! Both options will make the v6 sound much better not quite like a hemi but still way better but I also didn't mind how quiet it was beforehand for highway driving or for late night drives not disturbing the neighbors. Fuel economy is hard to judge when in the city I find if you really want to see how the fuel economy works take it for like 30 minutes strictly highway driving and you'll see the fueled economy start to get way better. The v6 rams really do well on the highway but do lack the torque when trying to make quick passes on the highway unlike the hemi where it almost feels like instant torque. Over all I've had my v6 ram since new and as a highway truck they are great but just around town I can tell you the fuel economy is just as bad as a hemi but still fun to drive regardless!
Thanks for the comment Ben! I always try and find some pros and cons with these videos but I'm probably being a little picky with the sound and the sluggishness but overall the driving experience was great. I was happily surprised how well it drives and how comfortable the truck was with the v6 driveline. like you mentioned the hemi is going to be faster with more power but still its a great engine option!
Around town i get 18.5, highway 22.5. Try that with a Hemi.
In my Ram 1500 Classic I have the 5.7 hemi with the 8 speed and I just love it. You swap in the efan from the V6 and delete the clutch fan there’s tons of room with the V8.
In my opinion the 5.7 with the 8 speed is the best option for these trucks. but the v6 will serve you just fine.
I had the V6 on order until i saw this video and switched over to the V8. The deciding factor for me was the point about the gain in MPG versus what you lose in power, and the math didn't add up. Plus, the minivan comment killed me.
Is the way to go,i had both.
First the v6 ,then ,i went for the hemi,no regrets at all.
That extra power worth every penny.
@axereborn yeah losing that power and towing ability for 2-3ish extra MPG doesn't add up. I'm loving the V8 hemi so far, no regrets here. Just did a road trip and got 20mpg.
Enjoy those lifter issues
When looking under the hood and seeing how much space opening there is and I can see the floor/road , the engine is exposed to all the dirt and water, is there a cover to block the road grime and water from getting on the engine?
Et is very modest, and I think it’s main purpose is to smooth out the stock stock prices.
3.55 differential gear ratio and a upgraded low back pressure exhaust system improves the 3.6 engine performance a lot.
Is that the lowest gear ratio?
I think the e-torque is the power used to accelerate during start/stop before the engine starts back up. It’s that 1 second the car is driving on battery power until the gas engine starts pushing it.
I have a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 3.6 v6 power which is adequate but the gas mileage is very good considering the weight of the jeep.
I drove a rental v6 4th gen and got 11L/100 on the highway doing 105 km/hr. My ecodiesel does about 10L/100. I'm really considering trading it in for a gasser because of the diesel fuel prices.
Not a bad idea! when I was talking to the saleman at the dealer he says they are having almost an impossible time selling Eco diesel's because of the price of diesel!
Probably the fact ecodiesel is gonna be obsolete is another reason!
If you have to put your foot into it all the time does that effect gas mileage ?
Is the 2022 bighorn a 5th gen ?
would the ecodiesel be the best route for highway mpg?
ETorque is more for stop start. Makes it more seamless in theory. Great video by the way. The 3.6 def needs more torque. I have a 3.6 now and it hunts on the highway and trailers make it work hard.
Yes it does, I should have gotten the 3.92 in my six. But with using the shift limiter I have grown accustomed to it.
@@kiddkiddstoy9867 unfortunately you can only get the 3.21 or 3.55 with the 6. 3.92 is limited to hemi only. I have the 3.55 in mine. It does help feel better off the line, not that it’s a race truck or anything. Just doesn’t feel as sluggish.
@@kiddkiddstoy9867 You can't get the 3.92s with the Pentastar.
@@SurelyYewJestYes you can get one now😊😊😊
@@dwightbernheimer331 Better to get them with the Hurricane.
I have heard that this ETorq thing eventually breaks the bolts off the mount or something like that? Is there any validity to this? I can see how you can't compare a high dollar truck to a budget level truck and sometimes you have to make some concessions based on what you are trying to achieve. Seems to me these trucks with this package are meant for a light duty commuter truck yet with full size and occasional careful light load hauling? A basic low maintenance simple truck?
Regarding the E-torque giving an extra 90 FT pounds, that should be VERY noticeable, i have a 2023 Warlock with the V-6 and non e-torque with 355 gears, i didnt buy it to drag race or even tow but i have stepped on it a few times and yeah it likes to rev but its got enough.
Dont forget the Warlock has HD suspension so it rides stiffer and also and inch higher. I notice the suspension stiffness but i knew that when i bought it and i am happy with it. I get about 17 city/mixed and 20 highway, i have the QUAD cab so i LOVE that 6 ft 4 bed!!!!
Pentastar is a balanced and reliable engine. It will be missed when it is gone
Great review. I own the Bighorn with the etorque V-6 and by no way has the get up and go of a V8, but with that said, it is a smooth engine and for what it is has very decent acceleration and the ride of this truck is absolutely very nice indeed. Highway MPG~21-22 at 70MPH. The 8 speed auto transmission is smooth and pairs well with the V6. After 14,000 miles it has had no issues and I run Mobil 1 full synthetic. Very satisfied with this truck.
Does Dodge have the Deactivated cylinders that GM has, I heard the the Eco-Tec 3 on the newer Silverado is a nightmare..been a GM man for 60 years now I may become. RAM fan over Fords plastic engine crap..Good Luck. I am in process of getting into a pick up again..technology is killing us old school GearHeads..
My last three Ram trucks I had with the hemi I got between 100 to 120 thousand miles and I had the motor worked on because of the soft camshaft that they put in them and that's a 4 thousand and up cost and then I tried in 2019 I purchased my first v6 and I put 256 thousand miles on it when I just purchased my second one last weekend and I will see if I can get just as good out of it as for towing I pull my 26 foot camper in the mountains and I have no problem so if you want noise buy a v8 and if you want quiet and noise out the back put on a good exhaust and drive your next door neighbor nuts
I think the idea of a system like the e-torque would be to work perfectly with the engine so that you don't notice it.
I three mopar products. My 2019 1500, 5.7 V8 E torgue I also have a Challenger and a 300S AWD. Both have the Pentastar which are are great engines. It going to be sad to see Pentastar go. However your best bet with the Ram, get the V8. My combined Mpg city and highway I average out 18 mpg combined.
I don't think they are getting rid of the 3.6 maybe I'm wrong
Threw some 285 60 20 cooper at3s on my 2020 with a 2 inch level. Sittin at 14.5 mpg :/ was close to 17 before. Truck looks awesome though.
Waiting on the Hurricane Hybrid review.
The one thing not mentioned was the gear ratio. I understand with the 355, it's not bad but the v6 paired with the 321, it's sluggish.
fredericton , new brunswick? lol i grew up there. visit every summer towing 6000lb trailer with my 1500 which is 6000km round trip
That's awesome! how does the truck handle the long drive? especially when you get into the hills ?
@@TheGettyAdventures the truck handles it just fine. it will do 110 all day even through the big hills in northern nb and on to rivierre du loup. if it's really hot, you hear the clutch fan kick in once in a while. the hemi/8 speed is an awesome combo, downshifts under heavy load are smooth and seamless. we are close to our max payload but use a really good equalizer hitch and sway control. you know the trailer is there but handling is easy
When you pulled away, your idle rpm was @ 700?…. Therefore, you had the auto stop start feature disabled. If it was working, your rpm would be 0, the e torque will start your engine and propel the truck forward, smoothly and silently, it is basically a very smooth and efficient stop start, also while it does give extra horsepower and torque, it is an independent system, and does not contribute to the overall horsepower and torque of the engine, so towing at highway, speed, all you get is the stock horsepower torque from the penta star.
Good review though, and the Pentastar is a much better engine than forums and UA-cam Suggests.
I do not know the exhaust system on these trucks, but if its the same as on the 2012 charger se. Just cut the mufflers off. The resonators and cats provide enough muffling that it's not obnoxiously loud and sounds much better.
@ The Getty Adventures, I am Toyota fan, I want to make a move for Tundra 2024, I have seen your videos on RAM trucks, which one you would recommend RAM truck Hemi 5.7 V8 or Tundra new Gen 3.5 V6 Twin turbo, in terms of reliability and resale value .
The Tundras have engines blowing left and right. Tons of issues with the new motor. I would go Ram all day long if it were me.
I got 313k on my 3.6.ltr pentastar thats in my jeep wrangler year 2013. Its not a bad engine...but shit..does the mpg fall when u start reaching these higher miles..and id say power as well. It feels like it struggles to maintain speed at time. I cant imagine what it would feel like on a heavier vehicle..like said pickup truck. With that being said, i am in looking at rams for my next vehicle..but i am bit reluctant on having the 3.6ltr v6 in a pick up which is a cheaper option now adays.
Good review EXCEPT for the constant whining about the v6 not being as powerful as the v8. People don't care about racing a truck to 60mph or what a standing quarter time is. Also, who gives a crap about the sound of the engine?
i found a 2022 crew cab sport wit 22,000 miles for 30 grand with the v6 in it was thinking of getting it but affraid it be a turd the only thing i pull is a 6x12 trailer n couple atvs the rest would be hiway pricess miles
An overhead cam engine needs to rev to make power. A quiet truck is a good thing. Fuel economy is nice I get 22 to 23 with mixed driving. Definitely works hard pulling a trailer. Good for most things though as mentioned by others in the comments. Don't need V-8 power to haul the bale of toilet paper home from costco
It just depends on how much Toilet paper you bring home lol
Fuel economy is why I'm not interested in any of the new trucks. If I'm going to pay the money for new technology, I expect more improvement. My 2017 3.6L with 3.55 rear end gets 19-21 in town and routinely gets 24mpg on trips.
My 2014 Grand Caravan was very reliable 😄
I'm not sure whether this is an oversight on your part, but you never commented on whether the Gen 4 that you tested had a 6 speed or 8 speed (2013>). If it had the 6 speed, that would definitely affect off the line performance and would likely feel a little more sluggish around town. You also didn't mention anything about tires. The same truck can feel like a completely different vehicle with different tires. If both vehicles were equipped with the same exact tires (with both sets having equal wear on them), I would take your observations about ride quality more seriously. If they had different tires, it's really difficult to determine whether the ride difference (noise/feel) is because of the generational improvements or just the difference in tires.
A full size truck needs a V-8 , Toyota only has V-6s now and that’s why I have a 22 Power Wagon. I put a Borla S-type exhaust on it and it sounds amazing, next up grade will be a Bank’s pedal monster. I don’t like the factory throttle response.
Sixes can be just fine. I prefer a I6 over a V6 if it were in a truck though.
is that exhaust loud?? I'm looking for something nice and loud and raspy. I worry a muffler delete on the 6.4 kind of sounds like a farm truck.
Cold start is really loud after a couple of minutes it quiets down a little. It’s really loud going up through the gears if you step on it a little bit. It sounds like a hemi should sound, I’m really happy with it. I’m a retired diesel mechanic and I almost went with a diesel I’m glad I didn’t.
waht i like about the e torque system is that it makes start stop usable. otherwise i just turn the system off cause good god i hate it without a system like a 48v starter/alternator backing it up.
That was a great review, pretty much matches my thoughts 100% having owned both engines. The v6 does pretty well above 2500 RPMs, but not below, that's just the nature of it in a heavy truck. One thing you didn't mention was gear ratio, I wonder if you picked a v6 with the 3.55 would it feel noticeably stronger in the city from a stop (I'm assuming your test trucks had the 3.21).
good point. A lot of the pentastars on dealer lots seem to have the 3.21 ratio. the 3.55 is very adequate around town imo
Yes I forgot to mention the gear ratio but both were standard 3.21 gears. it would be interesting to have the 3.55. probably would make up some of that "sluggishness" off the line. I was also surprised how little the e-torque system actually impact the truck.
it would be cool to see the difference between the 2 gear ratios. as you mentioned the 3.21 gears are on almost all ordered trucks from the dealer.
This is where the steering wheel shift limiter helps. There are charts on several 5thGen Ram sites that show what gears give your 3.21 equipped the equivalent final drive ratio as the 3.92. After a few test tries, It has
made my towing a less stressful experience and keeps the Trans from constantly "hunting". Makes my trips from NY to NC easier.
@@kiddkiddstoy9867 but the first 3 gears and the 3.21 kills power
Can u please make a video on the ram DFD vs DFK transmission I can’t seem to find any real info on them and I can’t figure out why there is the 2 packages on the website with the same price
I also am interested.
I believe the difference is the rated input torque for those transmissions. the v6 options have slightly different set ups because the torque input is lower compared to the v8. but I could dive into it and see what else I find!
@@TheGettyAdventures that is what I read but they are both under the 5.7 hemi. I think it would make a great video not much info on it and a lot of people asking the same question.
what was the gear ratio? 3.21, 3.55 or 3.91. A 3.21 would be a turd.
Etorque is a start stop system only.
That’s the big thing. People incorrectly assume they will have more mpg in a v6 however the power to weight ratio suffers. So you end up with a vehicle that suffers from the same mpg with less power… it’s not worth it.
90 Ft-Lb of torque is about or less than what I tighen wheel lug nuts when I set my torque wrench lol.
What's the hr power and torgue
305 hp and 269lb-ft
Had that motor in a dodge van would never consider pulling a 4000 pound trailer with it not going to do it very efficient.
Might as well get a Ridgeline if getting a V6 “truck”. I prefer to future proof. V6 hauls half the weight and sounds anemic.
Rather have an ecotec 3 4.3 from Gm makes enough torque for a v6 get a Little more boost if you run e85
The start stop is great in tropical temperatures. It is horrible for people who live in cold weather areas. Why would you ever let your oil drain at a red light in zero degrees weather and then re circulate back into a drained engine? If iam wrong please school me.
For the sound buy some flow master
I ditched dodge a long time ago after i started seeing tipm issues. My dads ram 1500 5.7 is falling apart. Electrical issues out the yin Yang. Rides like a lumber wagon . I went backwards in time and my 03 duramax rides like a freaking gem and is cheaper to drive day in day out . Ram went downhill big time
That’s weird. Electronically issued? Never heard of that and I’m on my fifth ram and always drive them to over 200000 kms. Had a window motor go in one under warranty if that matters.
@@vulcanman64 i can fix mechanical problems no issue but when things start going bad with wiring and modules etc etc dodge is the leader in those issues, plus they run shitty transmissions get horrible fuel milage, I went backwards in time and got a 2003 lb7 duramax and its the cheapest horsepower I've owed so far
Sounds like a Jeep Wrangler too lol
They got the 3.6 Pentastar sounding awesome in a 300, so I'm sure they can do much better than this.
My brother has a 2012 Ram 1500 5.7 hemi that has had the camshaft and lifters go bad. 3.6 engine is superior. Much more reliable.
But i get 20mpg with a stock 6.7 cummins. A v6 full size isnt it hoss
My first truck had the v6, was very disappointed and I promptly upgraded.
Can't hate on that. the 5.7 is a great engine in these trucks!
we better get used to that 6 cylinder noise ... unfortunately
this true lol. although and inline 6 with turbos may sound interesting.
He seems to think that the hemi has 410 lb of torque at low speed driving around town, it just ain’t so lol
4th gen the 5th gen, plus you're talking about a more lifted truck with far more aggressive tires, probably different gear ratio to make up for the taller tires. If the Warlock didn't make more noise just from the tires alone I would wonder what the hell was wrong. You're comparing apples and oranges between these two trucks. The fortunate 5th gen doesn't make it different. You would have to drive a fourth gen truck with the same tires and basic layout.
So u just took out the regular v6 I thought u found a truck with the new twin turbo V6 hurricane
The hurricane isnt even in production yet for the rams. Also the hurricane is an Inline 6 not a v6.
Yes I know it's an inline 6 just thought I Google it to see what I could find and this video came up. U can't compare a regular v6 to a V8 for any reason for start up performance especially for towing and when they do put twins in the ram line up look out cause with programming the high output will make well north of 600 horsepower
@@jeremyshilts3725 the title literally says "V6 3.6L" so idk how you ended up here if you were looking for I6 hurricane content
“Heavy duty diesel mechanic review”
too much focus on the sound
Fair enough! just my opinion and sound is a tiny portion of what a truck is. just a sticking point for me personally.
Stop comparing it to the minivan 🙄
Sorry, I just don't have a lot of faith in Stellantis. Love child of Fiat & Chrysler and made in Mexico? What could possibly go wrong?
90lbft of torque is not that much, as a mechanic you know that.
You didn’t drive them the same. You didn’t take the fourth generation on the highway and show us acceleration and you never gave us fuel economy rating that you achieved while driving the fourth generation.
I can fit 2 / two / ✌🏻 illegal immigrants under my hood . Helps me offset my monthly truck 🛻 payments 👍🏻
Diesel mechanic review:
It's not a V8 in power and sound. Repeated many times to emphasize point.
Thank you captain obvious.
You're reviewing hp on a mpg focus truck. Torque is mpg, not hp.
Are you death ??? It sounds as V8 from the start . It fills exactly as regular V8. Don’t listen for this expert 😂😂😂😂
