You can hear Chris or Simon crying with a choked up voice. Me too. I was crying at Irina's accomplishment. Such a great champion who has been on top for so long and has been through so much. My favorite performances ever.
I love both too... and Irina always gave superb interviews... she was respectful, cheerful, gracious, polite and (according to Michelle Kwan) always teased Michelle about when she was going to get married. There was always a wildness about Irina's skating, and while it didn't always "work" I loved watching her. This program of course is just AMAZING!!!
This was the best FS she's ever done. It had her trademark speed and power and explosive jumps. The height she gets on her lutz and flip jumps are mind boggling. But what she had that night was emotional impact and a true connection to the audience and that's something she didn't really have before. Plus, you knew she gonna win once she landed that opening triple lutz/triple loop combo. One of the few women who gets so much height and distance on her jumps that underrotation being an issue.

irina has always been an amazing skater. Real competitor. Russia has been on the DL ever since Irina however, seeing this years Russia junior skaters i'm really looking forward to next year because i believe that next year will be Russia's time to shine. :) PS this routine has always been my favorite
wow ! i love remembering this ! about 2002 - irina was not robbed in Lp, but in SP. Has she been 1st in SP as I think she should have - the medals would have been very different. But it matters nothing now. She is happy and that is all that matters :)
@Russie77 - Sarah won because two better skaters screwed up in the long program. After Michelle fell, the gold was Irina's to lose. If she had done her 3-3 (or maybe even without it, with out the step-out) and not rushed her program, she would have placed first in the long and won the gold medal. In my opinion, she incorrectly believed that there was no way the judges would place Sarah Hughes ahead of her. She was wrong.

It's too bad Irina panicked and she left off about 7 points off her total because the triple loop double toe combo didn't count as she had two other triple loops earlier. Big mistake; amazing she still won.
there was a rule that women couldn't wear pants, but after 04 it was changed to allow women if they wanted to. the reason why it doesn't happen as much is because its a personal preference. irina always liked long-ish dresses and pants. i guess other female skaters just prefer to wear a dress. hope that answered you question =)

Irina should've been 1st after the short program...not michelle. if Irina was first after the short, she would've won the gold even if Sarah won the free skate. but i agree, she never saw Sarah as a threat, and underestimated the U.S. skaters
@MrAlexNaum Are Russian figure skating fans crazy or something? Irina is a fantastic jumper: high jumps and some amazing combinations and she has good energy on the ice. Difficult footwork, transitions? Interpretation of music? Repore with the audience? It takes a complete package to be a skating champion. She was good. She deserved this win. But not an inspiring artist which is the magic of figure skating and what makes the legends: John Curry, Janet Lynn, G&G, Michelle Kwan, Peggy Flemming.
Yeah, she did three triple loops-- so only one of them counted. Irina clearly deserved to win this competition, but I'd strongly dispute the idea that she earned every title she won. Sometimes she was undermarked, sometimes she was overmarked. Personally, I thought she should have been 4th in the 1996 Worlds, 3rd (for a bronze) in the 1997 Worlds (causing Michelle Kwan to win the title and Terror Lewinsky to finish second), and 3rd at the 2002 Olympics.
fantastic!!!! she should had a higher mark.... 145 at least... the difficult of the excellent 3Ltz-3L with no underotation... the two 3L with an extremely diff entrance, one in combination with another 2L... 3S2L2T... Spins,Spiral... well... just magnificent!!!! It was Her night
It must be frustrating when the audience tries clapping along with the music and the tempo changes, so it sounds like a huge mess. Sure would throw me off.

@dsfddsgh I'm American, but I totally agree with you. Waaay too much talking, and you can't really enjoy the program.
I much rather listen to these british announcers from Eurosport then the american announcers who just blather on during the skaters routines.

Its incredible a skater with such poor transitions and zero grace won as many medals as she did. Her jumping is great, but overall skating...blah.
