@@DTTaTa According to John Zorn, Naked City was intended as a "composition workshop" to test the limits of composition and improvisation in a traditional rock band lineup. And there is a lot of improvisation here, though under strict rules set by the composer. Notice the way he directs the band.
I’ve been obsessing over John Zorns music for the past 5 years. Been collecting as much of his works as I can. Pure genius. Zorn and Zappa forever. His label Tzadik is one of the best labels ever.

Each of these guys is completely amazing. I was in my late teens/early 20's back in the 90s, going to shows in NYC at least once a week. So many great ones. Joey Baron was always so fun to watch live. Bill Frissell was mesmerizing. I remember seeing Masada at Town Hall, Paul Motian Trio at the Village Vanguard, and Fred Frith solo at the Knit (one of the best shows I've ever been to). Grateful to have been a part of that scene at such an exciting time.
Another reminder about Bill Frisell's amazing virtuosity and eclectic approach. At one time I found Zorn hard to take but I must admit that now, at 70 years of age, I feel that I am growing to like some of his music. Thanks for an interesting upload!
+Leslie Nelson You might also enjoy some of his more modern stuff like 'Mount Analogue'. It has a lot of improvisation and block structure like this but is much more 'mature' sounding for lack of a better word.
seeing as this is from the year Grand Guignol came out, I really hoped to see them do the Debussy cover, as I absolutely love that one. could anyone here point me at a concert vid where they're doing 'La Cathédrale Engloutie' (if they ever did that live, that is)?
Does anyone know where I find piano sheets for songs like Asylum? I would love to play something like this and most songs of Schönberg for example are too calm for me :D
yep :) I believe it was one of the first public performances of Metal Tov, they're all reading from charts. The later performances were much more coherent.
If only they had Mike Patton, what a show it could have been... EDIT: Not saying it isn't an already impressive performance! EDEDIT: Silly me, it seems Zorn and Patton have been collaborating on a regular basis since 1991. :-D
Patton always did a fine job with them, but Eye was just THE perfect vocalist for Naked City. Besides, even though Patton sounded good on these songs, he mostly just stood still on stage compared to Eye. But to each his own.
These old warriors of jazz had a lot to offer. But female influences were probably not desired? I like the sweet sound from you, Yamatsuka Eye. Sometimes he sounds like a woman.
i can't believe they have this written down as sheet music.
Вот я сейчас о том же подумал. Как вот это всё можно записать нотами,и главно-как потом эти ноты сыграть?!!
"the existance of smooth jazz implies that there is rough jazz"
this is it.
You could say it is roughly jazz
Which is great but I could do without the insane shrieking.
I wouldn't call this jazz, there is very little improvisation but definitely amazing music

I’ve been a John zone fan since 1958 :)
how was his playing at 5 years old?
I cant overstate the full effect John Zorn had on me in 1990 and the 3 decades of ripples through my own creative output. This is amazing to watch...

Check out his NPR Tiny Desk Concert where he does a bunch of Beatles songs unaccompanied. It's incredible stuff.

must've been amazing seeing naked city live
i haven't watched this concert in awhile...but what a joy. Watching joey baron is just pure joy!
I don't feel so lost if Bill is listening and searching too. Music is a journey ❤

In the full recording of this show, they play Leng T'che, and Kevin Sharp (of Brutal Truth) doubles on the vocals with Eye.

It's a shame that Naked City is not on Spotify, except for one live album. 😢

I like when Zorn screams. Would like to see more of it. He seems to be good at it!
