The greatest musician on earth. period. Zorn is truly a game changer for me. Since I discovered him, music changed for ever. How I perceive it, how I play it, EVERYTHING. I'll be for ever grateful to this man and his avant garde thinking en every way.
Absolutely. And with luck you'll embark on an investigation of music that will expose to you other "greatest musicians," I kid you not. Including the old, stodgy white guys: Beethoven, Sibelius, Monteverdi...

seen (and heard) them live in this very concert there and then. was one of those gigs i've never forgotten. so i went to see and hear them live again in a city in northern italy, maybe six or seven or ten days after the stuttgart gig... and i just choked with my jaw dropped all the time: they played each and every piece exactly the same, the same arrangement, the same ensemble parts, only the soli were (obviously) different! other-worldly-freaks, this was all planned, learnt, rehearsed... and mastered! to those who don't seem to catch the artistry in this, just have a listen to what and where and with whom each one of them has played in the 27 years that have gone by since this gig... you probably have them playing on ten or twenty albums you keep on your iphone now, and just ignore that.
Joey Baron is a jazz drummer, so that is how he approaches it. Reportedly Zorn tried to get him to switch to matched grip and he refused. And he is good enough that he could make that shit work.
That's how my drummer does it. He was taught tradional jazz drums than got reallllly into grindcore and speed punk. Instead of alternating between highhat and snare he does like 16th notes on the high hat and 32nd notes on the snare, but will go into triplets or off beats occasionally all while holding the stick with that limp looking backwards jazz grip. I'm ok at drums but I can't immitate it. Grind jazz drums is beyond my pay grade. Lolz. I get mad when the keyboardist can't play the parts I write and I have to play keyboard and sing...which I hate...and he gets to play guitar...and he can't sing. He can yell really good punk snot style though. Bassists has to do harmonies when we are actually singing and not screaming. I guess we yell too. Too bad the kids aren't into good music these days.
We should totally do a REVERSE SHRED version of this set!! I can handle drums and keys. Maybe guitar and bass. Any sax players out there up to making this sound like a mall show?
This may be the greatest 15 minutes of live music on UA-cam

In 1990, I went to their concert in Tokyo. Now I think Naked City's songs are modern classical pieces performed in a form of a hardcore rock band.

Zorn was the best vocalist for his own band. Just pure spasms of vocals!
seeing this performance brings out how similar his wild saxophone runs and vocals are
Classic. Zorn is still putting out new music in 2014.
After going through that short set and closing with Pet Sounds… that was quite the ride! Such a great set.
1:42 never seen a guy doing a blast beat with traditional grip
Same wtf

naked city…it’s an acquired taste, it’s good torture music to get answers
So..is this before Yamatsuka Eye was in the band?
Kinda, Eye was in studio with them by this time, but wasn't a consistent live vocalist until a little later on.
Fuckin' madman
