Cool video, quick thought/ suggestion. Check your torch. The tip nut may be loose or the bevels on the tip may not be sitting correctly in the torch. I heard a snapping or popping at the 5:35 mark. That's usually caused by the gasses mixing in the torch body. Hope this helps. I really enjoyed this video. :)
Thanks for the tips! It only ever popped when I put it on the gas saver between it shutting off the gas and oxy. This video is a few years ago. The popping went away at some point and I had forgotten about it.
A few Questions: 1. Why quenching the handle? Was this only for effect for the video? 2. Why heating the pan/sheet? Only a risk that the heat warps it. Better would be heating it and then flatten the bottom once more under the press One tipp at the end. Please don´t put your thumb on the handle, it will hurt your wrist in the long term. Also consider using a heavier hammer
Good questions. Yes the handle quench was mostly for entertainment same with heating up the pan in the fire. I am learning better methods and hammer techniques. Thanks for the advice!
Beautiful, high quality work! I love the thought and effort you put into everything you make. I am looking to buy a fly press and was wondering where you got yours. Thanks for your help! Keep up the great work!
Thank you! This video is a bit old and I’ve improved my process quite a bit since then. The fly press I got on eBay. Shipped from east coast to west. Still was a good deal. But there are a few people on instagram who sell them on occasion as well
Hey Matt! I recently uploaded a video called “giving up the tiny house?” And explain exactly how I was able to afford building the blacksmith studio. Lots of hard work and risky investments
@@stagecoachfarmforge I am very impressed with your shop and so far my wife and I have been enjoying your videos quite a bit. Thanks for posting and keep up the great content 👍
very amazing! I knew I was in for a treat when I saw an anvil in the background. Excellent production. As a smith, you let your hammer do the talking. Good to see the ear protection. Going to check out the website. I have been looking for a steel wok since my last one broke 5 years back. My wife likes Lodge cast iron but its not for me, not for a skillet.
Thanks I appreciate it! I am getting ready to add a wok to the website. They take the most hand hammering of them all but I have a good design. Email me for pics. Have a great day
12G steel and the disc for an 11” is 12.625” radius with an 8” base. Give it a go! And when you get tired of beating on it I sell the blanks pressed up ready for a handle. Hoping to have blanks back up on the site soon. Have fun!
Stage Coach Farm & Forge #ShopSmall, #SupportSmallBusinesses. I love this video for the fact it gave me an opportunity to see how the pan I will be getting was made. Love to see the passion that goes into this art, not just a pan.

What gauge is that sheet metal and how big does the circle need to be to make a 12” frying pan? I may try this as a homemade project.
12G steel and the disc for an 11” is 12.625” radius with an 8” base. Give it a go! And when you get tired of beating on it I sell the blanks pressed up ready for a handle. Hoping to have blanks back up on the site soon. Have fun!

Beautiful
Thank you! I love making this cookware
@@stagecoachfarmforge you're welcome!
Very cool! Why did you sand blast the pan?
It takes off the mill scale which gives the pan a cleaner finish.
You have my dream shop. Give it back?
Only in your dreams!
What steel do you use for the pans
Great video, got a LKD&SBSCRBLD from me
What kind of carbon steel did you use?
It’s actually mild steel. Industry standard name is “carbon steel skillet” even though that makes no common sense
Also found you through
Essential craftsman.
What’s the round mark on the anvil that’s been sanded off?
Essential Craftsman is so awesome. Not sure which round mark on the anvil your seeing.
Only video on UA-cam
Amazing!
Bro how much diameter carbon steel will it take to make a 10 inch fry pan
For a 10” pan the blank is 13”
good job...
Thank you!!
@@stagecoachfarmforge I am becoming a fan of your work. Will become a customer at some point :)
Impressive
I appreciate it!
Is there a place to mail order some of your handmade products?
Look at the description of the video.
yes our website www.stagecoachforge.com make sure to sign up for our email list for our next shop opening.
I just bought a skillet from Williams Sonoma.... was cooking on it 45 minutes later.
Good video. What type of steel do you use for the skillet, just plain mild steel?
Thanks I appreciate that. It’s just hot rolled mild steel.
That’s amazing!! So epic! How long does the average skillet take to make?
It’s a process....I usually make them in batches so not sure about exact timing.
How do you like that rigid anvil? Great work btw
Thanks! It’s a great anvil. The smaller tapered rear end is very useful
BEAUT
Thank you!
👍
Did you quench in water? Forged in fire would scream lol.
Water quenching is appropriate for several tool steels, and for mild steel the quench is actually useless lol
the right title should be: Forging a handle
11 gauge for the pan?
Pans are made from 12G steel
I think your subscriptions are about to take a jump.
Sure did! Thanks for watching!
Take my money lol
You are to kind!
👌 🆗️ 🙆♀️
I guarantee that isn't any run of the mill ballpeen hammer...
you on to me!
Pressing a blank is not forging. The handles were but that was it.
Bah humbugger you got switch baited
👍
