This was born out of combat techniques with war horses.

Every horse “runs” (trots, canters or gallops) differently, depending on their physique. Some rock and roll…like a boat rolling on a wavy sea…and some don’t…like the boat is floating on still water.
These trick riders use horses that are especially steady and smooth.
Also, the TEMPERAMENT of a horse is critical:
When she was being dragged on the ground, or hops from side to side, that horse doesn’t miss a beat. He knows everything is cool.

Men do it as well. My grandpa did trick riding for the us army as part of a demonstration team. This is many decades ago. Because it was the military they would do a full gallop, hang off the side of the horse and shoot their rifle under the horses head and hit a target. Jump from one horse saddle to another or have the horse to lay down on its side on command so that they could use the horse for cover to shoot at a target. Basically tricks that would be used in real combat displayed at events to show the public.

Actually, cowboy stunt riding started with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show back in the late 1800s, early 1900s. But, actually the Americans learned it from the Russian Cossacks that were part of the show. If you don’t believe me, there is very early film footage where you’ll see them. As the camera pans the group of performers, you’ll see a small group of them with their flared coats, beards and shashkas. Cossacks are still amazing horsemen to this day.

Barrel racing is fast. The basics is to get the horse to go around each barrel with knocking it down. Then get back to the start as fast as you can. Each barrel you miss or knock down adds seconds go your time.

You learn trick riding the same way you learn motorcycle stunts, half pipe skiing, ski jumping, skate boarding or any other extreme activity. You fall down, you get up, you fall down and get up again until you learn how. Of course, there's a progression in any of these sports where you start out easy and once you've mastered that you keep adding more difficult elements. These girls have undoubtedly been riding all their lives, just like guys doing motorcycle stunts started out on 50cc dirt bikes when they were four years old.

  • @dougtripp2431

Men and boys do trick riding too. I was about 11 or 12 when I got pretty good at archery while on a horse. I could even hit targets shooting under the horse's neck and between his legs. It takes the right horse for trick riding and also lots of daily practice. Most of the tricks with a horse are started out while the horse is walking and then progressing up at different paces.
And your right, it takes a lot of core strength but limb strength too. I was doing 50 to 75 sit ups, push ups, pull ups twice a day.

The funny thing is, minus the super flashy parts, some native tribes in the Americas did the same things, without saddles. After Europeans reintroduced horses which fired out during the last Ice age here, and for centuries, no empirenornn no power messed with plains tribes, until they had gatling guns and cartridge fed lever guns. Everytime before that, that they tried. They got slaughtered and were scared to do anything significant, because the plains tribes were horse archers, and the last and greatest ones the world had ever seen. The trick riding comes from things they did in reality and battle, as a part of life, added with modern flair and how much lore you can with a saddle, vs bare back, but the off the side and run/jumping or back, or turning around, yeah, natives did for battle, then war, also to show off who was best and most skilled. Was all men, back then, some can sexist, of that’s what they think, maybe. But think about this. Natives only killed men, in combat, we didn’t slaughter women and children, unlike all the Europeans came over, and forced that on us. By doing it to us. So back in the day. If you didn’t want to fight. You’d want to be a woman. As no one would target you, deliberately. I mean, sore a mother tribe might take you, but you’d be alive, and they take care of you, if you became a part of that new tribe. Only warriors could be men, and men were the only ones targeted in fights, that could be killed, on purpose, as a whole. There’s good, bad and wrong on all sides of history, to me. The best side, of you had to fight, and did so by their rules. Was against native Americans. As if you gave up, you wouldn’t be slaughtered or imprisoned, as long as you only fought other men. If you weren’t a warrior and didn’t fight. You’d always be alive. Except the freak accident. Yeah, lots of stories of various natives being horrifically brutal at times, but it’s all against Europeans/colonists, men at first only, then changed some. As they slaughtered our women and children first, so answered back. To an extent.

I had to laugh when you said you are afraid of horses but not cows. Cows are responsible for more human deaths and injuries each year than all species of shark combined. I have had horses for over 50 years and only remember 3 maybe 4 injuries from them and none caused death. I am not talking about sprained ankles or the like but things like being kicked or badly bitten.
Also they oversell the diagnosis part on Heartland but if you know your horses you know when something is wrong. I went down to put my animals in about 11 pm one night because it was going to rain. I noticed my mare Dee was breathing differently. I went into the house and called my vet. He arrived, examed her and diagnosed her with early pneumonia. He said "I can see you know your animals because I almost missed it myself".

Greetings from Texas. Here in Texas back in the day. The Comanche native Americans were well renowned horsemen and fierce warriors who ruled Texas for centuries. During battles with the white settlers whom they understandably saw as invaders upon their ancestral lands , they always fought from horseback. . White settlers both feared and at the same time couldn't help admiring the Comanche Warriors and their unmatched bareback riding horsemanship. The Comanche Warriors were well known during battle to almost disappear from the backs of their running horses only to reappear hanging on upside down while shooting arrows from their bows from underneath their running horses necks and with great accuracy. It was a feat of horsemanship that has yet to be matched by anyone else. Doing this made the Comanche Warriors very hard to see much less shoot. Young Comanche boys and girls were placed on a pony and led around by the age of three. Once they were comfortable controlling their mount, they would ride alone. So they literally grew up on the backs of horses. Much like the European Mongols.

I've been around horses, cows, mules livestock for years....I have never had a mishap with horses and I ride allot, but cows can be very dangerous...the most livestock ranch deaths have been caused by cows and bulls....Sure they can be gentle if used to being around people, but most that are just out in the field have little time with humans.....the momma's with calves are especially ones to watch out for....they chase our cow dogs if they get too close or aggressive in herding them....that being said, yes horses can be dangerous....an irritated horse generally has it's ears pinned back...that's a very clear indication they are not happy...

To stop bouncing around in a saddle Jono, stand up in the stirrups more. I can think of any number of rodeo events being tied to working on a ranch. Barrel racing for example is a competition to race out to trouble somewhere. Trick riding, I really have no idea where this comes from. I would think anyone starting out with this would have to start young. For anatomical reasons, I think this is more a ladies' sport. But guys can certainly do it.

What’s your speed limit there? I genuinely curious? Pretty sure Idaho is higher, for the interstate anyways. My work truck. Way bigger than my personal vehicle. And depending on trailer and load I’m hauling to be installed on a farm. Is barely under the CDL limit, what’s needed for semis, yes, different grades to it if you will. And my speed limit is still 80 mph (128.748 kph) in a 1 ton truck, with a 12 foot long service bed, and total weight under 26,000 lbs. barely. I of course always go the speed limit, but Idaho and I-84, is insanely fast I call it the American autobahn, as it really is. I’ll be doing the speed limit, more or less…and I get blown by like I’m standing still almost, so fast that I can check my mirrors, nothing. And barely over the recommended time I should check them again, multiple vehicles that were barely visible are blowing by me, 5 miles up, I’ll see a state trooper in the median/turn around. And I’m like they blew by you, 3 minutes ago at the latest, so nothing. There are some horrid accidents at times, when everyone is going 128 plus kph with the size and weight of our vehicles. You can legally have a large, 40,000lb vehicle, as long as an RV, pulling a tens of thousands pound trailer, with a seperate boat trailer attached to the trailer, with needing a commercial license, that can legally go 128 kph (80mph) and they are ultimately 60-80k pounds in weight, at times, going that speed. Who don’t pay attention, never done it before, don’t need a special license or training, or nothing, you can just do that. As a regular person. Not part of a company or work. And be old as dirt. Super slow reaction/not paying attention to anything.
