Headtracking is possible via the DSC port just like it is on any EdgeTX/OpenTX based radio. I've set this up before with my Taranis, I think the project is just called "headtracker". If you google headtracker gitbook you should find it. You just flash this firmware to a specific arduino nano, like 30 bucks, and put a headphone jack on it, then it sends a ppm signal to the radio's DSC port you can use to run a couple servo channels for your headtracker gimbal. Cool stuff!

So, I recently acquired the Radiomaster MT12 with the intention of replacing all my TRAXXAS and Losi RTR transmitters. This decision seemed logical to me for several reasons:
    1. Many RTR transmitters get the job done but lack ergonomic comfort, prompting my search for a more user-friendly option.
    2. Stock RTR radios often limit customization options, necessitating the use of a Bluetooth dongle to connect the radio to a phone for parameter adjustments. While I seldom modify settings once my cars are set up, the inconvenience of switching the Bluetooth dongle between transmitters or purchasing multiple dongles for each radio seemed impractical and expensive, especially considering the number of radios I own.
    3. Several of my cars feature receivers with built-in stability management. Swapping them out for receivers from brands like Futaba or FrSky, which lack built-in stabilization, would require adding an external gyro. However, the challenge lies in the waterproof receiver box, making the addition of a gyro somewhat tricky, though I'm considering if it's possible since the gyro doesn't necessarily have to be inside the receiver box.
    4. The accumulation of numerous radios from each car's purchase led to the inconvenience of managing and storing around 15 radios.
    5. Consolidating to a single radio would allow me to sell the surplus radios.
    6. The built-in 4-in-1 module of the Radiomaster MT12 would enable me to retain the original built-in receivers, which vary among TRAXXAS, Losi, FrSky, and some unknown brands.
However, my plan encountered a setback when I discovered that the Radiomaster MT12 only supports ONE TRAXXAS receiver, and I don't have that particular receiver in any of my cars. Additionally, it does not support LOSI receivers, at least not at the moment. To proceed with my original plan and use one radio for all my RC cars, I would need to invest in 15+ compatible receivers and numerous gyros. This investment doesn't align with my preferences.
Given these considerations, I'm now contemplating whether to keep the Radiomaster MT12. Excluding the 4-in-1 module, I'm questioning what makes this radio special and whether it still holds value for me.

    • @jhue73

thats what i wanted it for but now i wont get it. i have quiet a few losi receivers. my frsky x9d with the 4 in 1 module does bind and fly my micro planes and helis that have spektrum receivers. losi uses spektrum which is dsmx, dsmr so the 4 in 1 does support that. so not sure why it wont work with some spektrum receivers. i tried to use the frsky x9d with the 4 in 1 module to bind to my tenacity with the spektrum sr6200a with no success. it may have something to do with channel order but im not sure. if i was gonna by all new receivers i would probably get the nb4.

In EdgeTX operating system there are programs, technicaly called LUA Script. You can run ELRS script and with that program change settings. For example increase data rate to get extream low latency for racing or lower data rate to drasticly increase control range and use receivers with internal antenna without risk of losing link. Great video, I flybdrones with these seamtems for years, and only ocasionaly drive cars. So glad with MT12.

    • @kpopRC

Hey swiss! You can get the expresslrs version. because you can piggy back transmitter modules. HOWEVER! the company needs to allow these 3rd party companies access to their protocols to build hardware, traxxas im sure is not going to let that happen. I am just planning on purchasing a 20 dollar receiver for any new model. at least with expresslrs, new receivers are added into updates that are available free to upgrade your remote. This just seems like a cheap way into something more reliable, and robust.

@@kpopRC yeah I agree, I went with the ELRS version. I have a multi-module that I could slide on there already anyway. • @kpopRC
      @kpopRC  7 місяців тому +1

YES! and it has way more options. like you can change mixes with switches. it's basically a fully air remote with heli mixing as well, so you can do tank steering with two escs, and and like swash plate style mixing. It's probably the easiest to learn as well once you understand the hierarchy of mix outputs and curves. Each channel, can point to a curve, and you can switch the curve graphs by name by switch. so it's pretty bananas. this is what happens when 10 years of opensource gets ported into a surface remote.

Thanks for the video...FANTASTIC info. I knew 'something' like this was coming from RadioMaster...but, I forgot to "keep track" of it during the party few months. However, something you didn't point out...something you should have pointed out...is that the "long distance" ability, and "multi-mode" ability are NOT from the same MT12. In a way, you've accidentally given 'misinformation', making it appear as if there's a single version of the MT12, and it has all the abilities you described. Unfortunately, the truth is that there are two DIFFERENT versions of the MT12 (and, two sub-versions of each), as follows:
    1) ELRS version - This version is capable of "long distances", for which you need to use the RadioMaster receivers. As I understand it (based on RadioMaster's own marketing info), this version is NOT compatible with receivers from other brands.
    2) 4-in-1 version - This has the "multi-mode" ability. This is the version having the ability to utilize receivers from other brands. However, as it's power output is lower than the ELRS version (100mw vs 250mw), it does not have the built-in "long distance" ability.
That being said, both versions can utilize a TBS Crossfire Nano module (both come with that Crossfire Nano module holder), to achieve even greater distance control. TBS has tested the aerial ability of their Crossfire to 45 miles. While they haven't tested the maximum surface control distance, in a conversation I had with them several months ago, the estimates control distance was expected to be at least 5 miles. However, it needs to be said/understood that, in order to achieve such distances with the TBS Crossfire Nano, you will have to not only purchase the Crossfire Nano Transmitter module, you will also need to purchase TBS Crossfire Nano receivers.
To everyone reading this, the MT12s do seem to be fantastic. However, BEFORE ordering, do your research, so as to make sure you don't order the wrong version. Again, there are TWO DIFFERENT versions of the MT12 - the ELRS version, and the 4-in-one version. On top of that, each version has two sub-versions - FCC & LBT (which has to do with region). In other words, technically, there are four different 'versions'...and, I'm sure no one wants to accidentally order the wrong one (returns can sometimes be a bit of a hassle, especially if you're the one having to pay the return shipping cost because you ordered the wrong 'item'). So, before placing your orders, is best to determine which version (ELRS or 4-in-1) you want, and which region 'trim' (FCC or LBT) you need.

    • @kpopRC

    • @ninthislandrc
      @ninthislandrc 7 місяців тому

@@kpopRCI do see that now...but, going that route retirees purchasing the external 4-in-1 module. The radio, when purchased, contains either the internal ELRS module, or internal 4-in-1 module. Also, I looked over the 'compatibility' list, and it didn't appear to be as good as I was hoping. A LOT of protocols are not on the list. For example, it can connect to the FlySky AFHDS2 & AFHDS2 protocols, but not the newest AFHDS2 protocol (which the Noble NB4 & Noble Pro use). Seems, the 4-in-1 module can't connect to most of the newest protocols used by other manufacturers. It can't even connect to receivers using several of the recent (not referring to the 'newest') protocols used by some manufacturers. Honestly, the more research I do on the MT12, the less interest I have.

It would be like trying to sell a multi-screwdriver 10-in-1 tool, when 8-9 of the screwdrivers are JIS, and only 1-2 of them are Phillips. Plus, the most popular protocols aren't even there. When I think of the most popular radios in the US, I think of the more recent releases from Futaba, Spektrum, Airtronics (which might be closed), and FlySky. I don't follow Airtronics, so I don't know if their latest protocol(s) is/are included...but, as for the other three, none are included.
The MT12 is fantastic for everyone currently using radios from other (ie. lesser-known) brands...but, from what I can tell, for those using more recent releases from the more popular brands ex this radio will probably be a no-go. As I said, I REALLY wanted to like it...but, I just can't.

Nice video but I still don't understand why and how this radio is "better" than other radios? Sure, it has EdgeTX and ExpressLRS, but how does this actually make it "better" than other radios? 99% of rc car drivers do not need super mega hardcore long range, so having it only makes it "better" for 1% of drivers. EdgeTX means what exactly? Other radios do what they are supposed to do so how can EdgeTX be "better"? I don't get it.

This radio also has every mix imaginable the kind of flexibility with 22channels that you won't get with a radio under 800 dollars. is it the best? maybe not, is it WAY better than all in it's price range. hell yes it is. Yeah all you need is a knife, but it's sure as shit easier to chop a tree with an axe. and if you're still using old gt3b frysky protocols with super slow latency then you must only crawl, because it's the only hobby you won't notice the slow response.

@@kpopRC "well for one it's cheaper than a noble, feels very good quality in the hand,"
True. Paying less is not going to hurt. : )
"and is open source. if you haven't been in the drone world much you won't know how far they have brought rc transmission in the last 10 years. This remote will grow with the community, who are wrriting code every day for this radio."
As I mentioned, the term "open source" is often casually tossed around, portraying it as a significant advantage. However, if you consider it, your car, phone, TV, microwave, Windows 11, and various other items are not open source. Strangely, you don't hear anyone demanding "We need open-source TVs!" with enthusiasm. When it comes to RC Transmitters they require EPA, EXPO, and several other elements, all of which are standard in radios produced by major TX manufacturers. It seems like proposing a solution for a problem that simply doesn't exist.
"For one, the receivers and radio have wifi for wirless firmware updates, and average 20 dollars for 5 channel with telemetry."
Now you are talking. WiFi updates can indeed be a valuable feature. Additionally, the affordability of a $20 telemetry receiver is a compelling factor, which is why I switched from Futaba to FrSky.
"the edgetx companion software will let you program the mixes on your computer."
Something you would only need if you did a lot of programming. I guess. EPA, expo and what not are adjusted really quick on a good radio.
"This radio also has every mix imaginable the kind of flexibility with 22channels that you won't get with a radio under 800 dollars."
If you need that many channels on a TX, that's good to have. I guess. Mixing is again only really great if you need it. 99% of all RC Surface TX don't need that.
"is it the best? maybe not, is it WAY better than all in it's price range. hell yes it is. Yeah all you need is a knife, but it's sure as shit easier to chop a tree with an axe. and if you're still using old gt3b frysky protocols with super slow latency then you must only crawl, because it's the only hobby you won't notice the slow response."
Well, I guess it makes sense to have it and not need it, instead of needing it but not having it. LOL. Not sure if I mentioned it, but I have a MT12, but I fail to be amazed by it, if you know what I mean. Thanks for your reply.

One great example of this tech, is head tracking, connection to multiple receivers at once, fully customizable sounds, and colours, and screen animations. If you just want "green button means go" more power to you. im in this hobby for WAY different reasons. WAY different reasons. It might just be too hard for some people to comprehend let alone run. @@kpopRC Hey, appreciate your response. Your mention of features like head tracking, simultaneous connection to multiple receivers, customizable sounds, colors, and screen animations clarified something for me. I now understand why people emphasize this radio as a "big deal." It's not necessarily about being "better" in a traditional sense; rather, it stands out for its versatility, allowing users to personalize various aspects unrelated to the fundamental functions of a radio. It's akin to comparing a customized 2010 PC with RGB lighting, water cooling, and other extras but equipped with an i3, to a 2023 model with an AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX, which lacks the flashy extras. The distinction lies in the customization options rather than a straightforward performance comparison.
In essence, it doesn't conform to the conventional standards of being "better" in the context of traditional RC radios. Instead, it excels in enabling a range of functionalities that go beyond what's essential for controlling an RC car. It's not a critique; rather, it emphasizes the radio's capability to perform tasks beyond the basics. It's akin to realizing I initially believed I needed a Futaba 14MZ costing $2000, only to witness a friend successfully flying his helicopter with a $56 FlySky radio. Thanks once more.
