    Riders cooperating to neutralise a race is rare and a sign that there is no trust in the organisers which is no surprise given yesterdays appalling TTT which started at dusk and in light rain but soon became driving rain in the dark with unlit roads.

    Last night was unquestionably hazardous, poor light and a high speed event on a technical course but are world tour teams saying they don't do rain anymore? PS I was roadside for a monsoon rainy Sunday stage in Barcelona in 1999 where the riders shut down the racing in protest. History repeats itself.

      Too little surface to put extra lines, it wont work. Lines on tires are for making the water flow outwards, on a bike tire it just isnt useful cuz there is no water that can make the bike aquaplane, if you went into a deep water zone you will slide even with “water” tires. They are just too slim for a different tire to be useful

      Cycling is full of this kind of “conventional wisdom” that turns out to be BS. Just look how long it took teams to accept that rock-hard 21mm are maybe not the fastest (because conventional wisdom states less comfort=more speed). It will be the same with wet tires. Someone will try it out eventually.

    • @kivori3438
      @kivori3438 Рік тому

      @@mx2000 never said that, i said that with current tire format you would need an improvment on the type of rubber and that would be worth even in dry condition so the difference between dry and wet tires wouldnt matter even in that case with these low surface area tires, its a matter of rubber grip on asphalt and water draining and with that small surface area the difference would be negligible. You would need an improvment on tire rubber as a whole for that to work and even then it wouldnt be worth to have 2 types of tires. For it to be worth tires would need to be larger

    Why can't pro cycling simply mandate big rain tires for these days, put 'em all on safer, slower tires and take away some of these slides and skids and, dare I say, poor bike handling. Not impressed when stars like Jonas play 'slow down, guys' while some lesser-known riders are actually racing their bikes in a professional bike race. If you wanna go slow, as JV did yesterday, I respect that, it was wise of them to do that. But don't cry the blues about riders who are comfortable in the rain, perhaps they have trained for it and this is the big stage for them to show their chops. And I still don't understand why there is no mandated body armor for these riders and riders know, if they wanted it or insisted upon it, they would have high-quality gear provided by top-notch sponsors. It'd be great, suit 'em up like ice hockey stars so they can take a hit, if only in the rain for starters. And somehow those hockey players are nimble as. So I suppose I am wearying of rider complaints about the rain. It rains in Europe all the time, not the organizers fault. And wheels touches and subsequent flippage, my goodness, figure it out with some sort of bump guards or fenders or something. Zero need for riders to be subjected to those sorts of crashes from fatigue or brakes or whatever. And I get that it happens, happened to me once as a bike messenger in DC, weary as the afternoon was in full rush-hour tilt and drifted into the side of a delivery truck and thankfully recovered after a few revs of my left pedal within the right=rear wheel well.

      Why are you complaining here? 😂 Body armor? Dude.. these guys have trained and are ready to risk it all to win. Being comfortable and less risky won't get you the win, not in the race and in real life.

      @@thedefaultuser Thanks for your reply and I think we agree more than disagree and, for the record, my complaints are less that than concerns, I truly hate crashes and injuries and, tragically, deaths of riders and racers and I simply think more can be done to protect them without taking away from the cultural cool of the sport. And helmets are a good example, the wind-in-the-hair look was cool yet who could imagine racing without a helmet now? And collarbones are always cracking and taking big-money riders out of action and why, if a shoulder/chest protector could be fit under the jersey and perhaps with a bit of a 'chest fairing' to help with body aerodynamics. And why no hip/pelvic protection, same deal as shoulders, always taking a hit. But my main point in my initial post was rain tires for rainy days such as today and with gravel bikes at the ready, organizers could say, okay, 40 mil tires today, get out the gravel bikes. And it'd still be a great race. But yes, my comment about Jonas was a complaint. Very self-serving of a star of his caliber to want everyone to slow down so his teammate can get back up to the bunch. And I am a fan, I want Primoz to win this grand tour, but not with any heavy-handedness or anything. That's why they have teams and Jonas could drop back himself, c'mon now, we all know that. 😀

    These riders will soon moan the cobbles out of Paris Roubaix. Get on with it. You chose an outdoor sport. It rains. Ride slower. Crashes happen especially if people are trying to win. Which is the whole point.

    • @davidgeorge9233
      @davidgeorge9233 Рік тому

      It’s not that simple, if you ride slower then you don’t work as hard and don’t generate enough heat, pretty quickly become cold when your core temp drops and then ironically you’re more at risk of crashing because of the effects of the cold.

    At what point is Roglic going to invest some time in learning to ride a bike? Seriously, this guy has below amateur level bike handling skills. Why does JV feel entitled to neutralize the race and demand everyone else wait for Roglic? At what point should he not suffer his own consequences if he doesn't want to invest in bike handling?

      In ultras, you race day and night, through cold, rain, scorching sun, on imperfect roads.
      In professional road racing, two drops of rain fall and teams are already complaining that the stage isn’t neutralized.
