  • The 2023 edition of Paris-Roubaix follows a brutal 257km parcours, featuring 29 bone-shaking cobbled sectors, not least the 5-star rated Trouée d'Arenberg, Mons-en-Pévele and Carrefour de l'Arbre. Far rougher than those found in Flanders, these pavés make the "Hell of the North" the toughest one-day race on the pro calendar. Who will claim a historic victory in this truly iconic Monument?

There is a super elite group of pros who are always contenders at Roubaix, even if they've been off the radar for a while. Shout out to Degenkolb for his performance today. Legend, and seems like a super likeable guy.

The van der Poel/ Philipsen duo have been absolutely smashing it this year, and today had the opportunity to play perfect team tactics and work Wout over for the win. If Wout hadn't have lost Laporte to a flat things probably would have been a lot different, though. Mathieu definitely owes Jasper a beer after all of this, and probably one to John Degenkolb too.

@@maschinealder Dege chose that line on the gutter himself, probably to save energy. The overhead video shows that Matthieu then moved up to close the open gap between himself and Phillipsen, when Degenkolb first threw his left elbow over, then leaned into Matthieu, then lost control of his own bike when his tires slipped on the damp mud and grass of the gutter. The overhead video shows that regardless of what sensationalism was reported by journalists, and Dege himself, MVDP and Phillipsen did not vary from the race line, Dege did, and Matthieu did not push him, but rather the opposite occurred. Degenkolb body checked Matthieu because he decided that he wanted to go back over to Jasper’s wheel, and he didn’t want Matthieu to close the gap. Poor decision making by Dege caused him to crash himself out.

MvdP is probably too heavy for Lombardia. Perhaps if he really focussed on it, he could stand a chance. But he most likely wouldn’t be as dominant as he is at the other monuments (and possibly can be at Liege)
I would say Poga has a higher chance of winning them all. Since he’s still young and he has proven himself both at San Remo and on cobblestones. However, Roubaix and San Remo will still be a challenge for him to win

@@AlexRochette Poga has been a beast on the cobbles in the TdF and in the Tour of Flanders (‘22 and ‘23), so I think that’s not that far fetched. If he gains more muscle, he will have an even greater chance (but that would compromise his climbing capabilities)
MvdP did do fairly decent in Lombardia once, but he wasn’t close to winning it and with the likes of Poga and Evenepoel nowadays, it will be near impossible even when he loses a significant amount of weight, unless they skip this monument some year
Either way, they will make cycling entertaining to watch
