  • Season 2 Episode 10 : Due to shipping delays, we did not receive the intercooler in time to install and test on our street legal go kart. In this episode, Jimbo experiments with an assortment of supercharger oils because the recommended oil was making the supercharger get extremely hot. Furthermore Jimbo modifies the supercharger for liquid cooling, yeah that's right a liquid cooled supercharger... During the road test to check the temperature of the supercharger the little 420 engine suffers a mechanical event. We also unbox some stuff a viewer sent us. thank you Aaron.
The walls in our new studio are bare, if you want to send swag please send it to:

One of the things i always wanted to do and never had the time for it. Was to take one of these engines and weld a jacket around the cooling fins and see if i could turn it into a water cooled engine. Since your already sticking a water cooler into this thing..........might be something to experiment with.

    • @d3faulted2

@Alfred Wedmore I'm not doubting that, it just seems easier to put the jacket around the fins than it is to try and remove them. For experimental purposes. Plus i got this idea originally from wanting to capture the waste heat from a generator. Would make sense to do that and pipe it to a radiator inside the house for heat in the winter if the power goes out.

The larger of the two is a K03-15 Found on Audi A4 and VW Passat 1.8T From 1997 to 2004. Too large in my opinion for a 420cc. The smaller turbo however is a variant from a lower RPM diesel 1.9TDI I believe from A 1993-1998 Jetta TDI with a smaller exhaust turbine and housing. I do believe this one will see positive pressure on engines in that range, especially with EFI and an operational RPM over 3000. I would recommend artificially reducing the size of the exhaust housing inlet size if you plan on using it on a smaller engine to increase the focus of exhaust pressure.
I have reason to believe the smaller turbo may solve some issues or add to this current project as well. If used for another project, that would be cool too.
      Hope these tidbits help!

Sure wish I would have seen this 6 months earlier. In the event you revisit this down the road, a few helpful bits learned from the jet engine and high performance worlds:
Jet engine oil is mostly used as a heat extraction medium, with lubricity being a relatively distant secondary principle. It's fairly thin in terms of viscosity, more like warm maple syrup, but used in tandem with an oil cooler, it is remarkably effective as a thermodynamic system in moderating temperatures.
Your charge intake air can be Cooled by the methanol injection if done directly after compression, preferably in as long a tube to your induction chamber as allowed. The methanol, when injected as fine mist, will evaporate heat and enter the combustion chamber nearly in an ideal gaseous state. Maximum compression and its significantly higher octane rating means you can get more power out of your air fuel mixture. On that note, as I'm sure you're probably aware by now, you'll need a richer ratio than 14.7 as methanol has a lower energy density than gasoline. Working with the intercooler, you get a nice, cool, dense intake charge and can run higher boost to compensate for the lower energy density.
On the flip side of all this, most combustion engines get maximum Efficiency the hotter you run them (but less overall power, naturally). The longstanding belief that *watercooled engines get max efficiency with acceptable power at 190-205*F is the "ideal" temperature, whereas air cooled engines can go up a bit with significant and sustained airflow past the cylinder fins. Having enough air to both come into the engine bay and good routing in extraction (hood ducts, extraction channels beneath the vehicle, whatever works for your design) will improve overall system efficacy. NACA ducts work surprisingly well with air cooled applications, both as a moderate enhancement for air compression and lowering drag. Placing them on leading edges works best, though it's not always aesthetically pleasing to do so. If function follows form on this project, you'll be far better off for the effort.
Incorporating as many of these as you can to balance performance with design protocols and packaging limitations makes for a very challenging project to tackle, and I look forward if you get to modify your later vehicle with the V-twin!

Intercooling a blower is important; they're made to move air not compress it, which is part of why they're so inefficient and create so much heat (ergo the need for an intercooler)
Twin screw superchargers are MUCH more efficient (and expensive), yet still benefit greatly from intercooling
    In the context of boost:
Heat = inefficiency = lost power
---also--- don't compound with the Roots; as per above, it is a blower NOT a compressor, and if you compound you will definitely want a twin screw

Maybe even sanding the head down a few mm to increase compression. Of course the results would be negligible, but you seem to love toying around with this thing and seeing what results you get. PC builder here... It's a good idea to use an radiator like that to keep the supercharger cool. At any rate, it will at least help with the overall life of it. A couple things I saw that you'll want to keep an eye on. One (that's already been mentioned) is to make sure you have an inhibitor of some kind in the fluid. Tbh, some antifreeze should be fine but I wouldn't mix it too hard as I don't think the pumps can take it. Another is the hose you use; that clear tubing looks like what you get from ACE or a farm and home supply store. That tubing is typically rated up to 80C before it starts to break down so it may not be a bad idea to try and find some automotive hose (tranny lines maybe?) to replace it. Otherwise you could gunk up the whole cooling system and having to replace it.
I feel like this was just more of a test to see if it worked, and isn't going to be permanent, but in case it is. :)

There were turbo kits for some Kei cars which used an IHI RHB31 turbo. Suzuki Cappucino was one I think I have both the AMR300 and an IHI turbo. The turbo will shortly be going back on my FZR125 twin, #2. #1 was blown up on the dyno. Those IHI turbos work really well on small engines so well worth giving it a try.

it'll be cool to hear turbo noises in future episodes from a small engine, that's for sure. and man a blown head gasket, would've been a real pain on an engine built for the car, but thankfully dis- and reassembly of the cement mixer one won't be too bad. can't wait to see the power it's gonna make with the intercooler though :D
