I second this! I've seen in a tiny home build, a island version where when its in place the wheels are tucked up under the unit and looks like a permanent structure.....but it was all made to be a seemless easy transition for the wheels to be accessible for moving.
Maybe subconsciously, you were thinking about recent headline news regarding Ted Cruz's dog Snowflake (5 lb. Poodle) being left all alone in a dark freezing home in Texas while the family skeedattled to Cancun. 😥
Love Bob! Between his "no bad dogs" comment and "bringing back casseroles", he is such an addition to every video he is in! I definitely like the vertical placement of the island better than horizontal.
Yep. Think about all the stuff that has come back around. My mom used to tell me if you held onto Something long enough, sooner or later it will come back into style. Ha ha.
Bob is the best showing of humanity. "There are no bad dogs" I love that statement so much. He even sat and admired a guys drywall work. He is so pure and he loves hanging out with you guys. Honestly love seeing him on the videos. Makes me super happy to see how well you guys treat him, knowing he is living his best life.
I agree! If they aren’t going to have bar type seating on the outside (side closest to stairs) Bc that is a higher traffic area/walkway. But I do think this makes sense visually & layout wise too
So, I work at a camp and the summer I live in one of their buildings with a bunch of people. In that building, the kitchen has a 'floating island' if you will, that can be moved to serve the purpose of the event. Hope this helps!
That’s actually a really great idea. Put casters that can lick in place on the bottom and move it according to what you’re trying to do. When one person is at work needing a lot of counter space at hand, vertical. When several are in there cooking together, horizontal.
It only makes sense because it’s a small space and really it could go both ways but why make it a permanent thing especially with their personalities depending on the vibes just keep it mobile like they had with their lives so far
Horizontal seems the best to me. It gives you a wide open kitchen and separates the kitchen from the dining room. If you have guests in the dining room, you can still work at the island and visit with them. If you have some kind of buffet/self-serve situation, the island right by the dining room would be convenient.
I am rewatcjing this episode today just to watch Bob - we need more Bob! And …. Also make an episode just on all the dogs you have had and where they went
Vertical! Most people are saying that you’re going to lose the view if you do it vertical, but your dining room table is right there! It will flow so much better over time!
Yeah we don’t actually lose the view at all vertically anyways because the whole front of the cabin will soon be floor to ceiling windows so any way you look you’ve got a view 💜
@@buffytune When it is vertical, they can still use it for a buffet. It will have better flow around it. Plus, it is easier to sit at the table and talk to someone in the kitchen without feeling so separated.
Vertical! That way it goes with the flow with the downstairs door and the stair case. It gets very closed off when it's horizontal and gets in the way of the flow of movement with the door!
I think vertical. Don’t forget to think about the circulation path. As you’re moving from the dining room through the kitchen down to the bathrooms. I would align the front of the island with the door to go down to the bathrooms. So when you walk up through the back door you get a straight shot through to the view. As an architecture student, always think about circulation. Also I think that sink needs to be centered on the window. Great vid as always.
No, don't center the sink under the window. They need as much counter space between the sink and the stove as they can find. As long as they can look out the window easily while standing at the sink, they will be happy.
I would actually do an "L" shaped island... that way your kitchen space is defined, and you have more countertop space to prep on... you could also add an overhang and set some bar stools there and have extra seating...
I vote horizontal! I just imagine the kitchen being a gathering place. Especially for you two. Horizontal would allow you to add seating around the island and do any prep-work while talking directly with friends. It definitely cuts off the space a bit, but for good reason!
I think the counter should be horizontal with a big lip/ledge to sit at on counter chairs to eat breakie and snacks. In this position, the counter will not get in the way of the microwave and pantry.
Horizontal - It makes the efficient triangle between your sink, prep space and pantry. If you put the island vertically it creates a barrier between where you will be prepping your food and your pantry.
@@cd2290 you’re right, it is. I mis-used it here to describe the efficiency of having unimpeded access to stored goods from the prep area of stove, fridge, sink.
Vertical makes more sense in the space, especially sense you are lengthening the room. Someone mentioned keeping the walk way from the door/bathroom and up thru the kitchen/living room open and I agree. Team vertical...longer not wider. I love watching the transformation. Thanks for sharing it!
I’m studying to be an architect and the horizontal creates better in habitation as you can prepare food whilst also entertaining guests in the sitting room! With it vertical, your guests are to the side of you and horizontal deffo makes for a better living. You can also utilise the space as a breakfast bar or buffet bar!!
Definitely agree with the horizontal. It makes so much more sense. (You’re studying to be an architect, I’m a licensed architect! So I guess it’s good we agree)
Could it be a butcher block large island with open shelves and slight overhang for bar stools... But on locking wheels? why can’t it be a moveable island? It could give you the versatility to move it in different ways depending on your needs.
Storytelling, video and editing have all migrated to a higher level. I like where you're headed. But a lot of that has to do with the fact that I like you(s).
Usually when you chop and cut things it is better to keep your eyes on the knives rather then on the view... you could always turn your head to see what is happening out of those windows... just a thought 💭.
Horizontal! Even though vertical looks beautiful, it seems to makes the area less functional. Your slide out pantry and refrigerator will be cutting it close to the island. There’s also an excess gap between the dining table and kitchen. With that lovely view out the window I think horizontal is the way to go! I love you guys so much! Can’t wait for the new merch 💕
Horizontal because then you can have bar stools up against the side so when you have friends over it's easier to 'hang' in the kitchen space!! Also, love Bob - when he laughed really loud at Eamon kicking that drywall it was so cute!!
Horizontal all the way. Moved is gonna make the pantry a pain to use. And it's nice to be able to prep and talk to guests. It also make a great sideboard for the dining area.
I really don't know why you don't have millions of subscribers. Honestly, the editing etc, feels like this should be a TV show! Your videos and kara and nates videos are the highlights of my sunday.
My parents renovated their kitchen years ago and the whole design of the island was based solely on how they wanted everyone to congregate around it when they were entertaining. They have a big space so they were able to do sorta like a T shape where the horizontal part is where they do food prep and can still be social and then the vertical part is like bar-stool height so people can sit down and chat, nibble on cheese, sip on their sparkling, etc. It's actually one of the main gathering points in the house.
For your kitchen layout I’d suggest trying both of them out for a few days and then decide because right now nothings nailed down so you can pick what flows and works the best for you.
I really like the suggestions about putting it on locking wheels. That could be a cool modern/industrial look. If you go with a more permanent placement, the only real problem I see with the 'vertical' placement is that it blocks off access to the future pantry. That would bug me over time. Then again, I have an allergy to galley kitchens, so. . .

@@eamonandbec put wheels on it then you can change it with your mood or with whatever you are doing ie entertaining and need it vertical while cooking verses needing a bench closer to the table as a Servery for people to grab a buffet style meal
I would definitely put locking wheels on the island so you can move it either way, both ways have too many pros to choose!!!! Also that new merch is so dope!!
Team horizontal! People tend to naturally gather in the kitchen during a party and if you add seating on the other side of the island, it facilitates conversation and cooking at the same time. Also, as you're in the midst of the renovation, don't forget to add some kind of utility closet for a broom, vacuum, mop, etc. An outlet in the closet is also nice if you have the kind of vacuum that needs to be charged. It's super convenient to have this storage near the kitchen and living room. A natural place would be under the stairs but I also love the vision you have going. Best of luck with it all!
This episode was so good, I didn't want it to end. Glad to see Bob is back. Love Bob and his choice for island positioning. And the drywall taping/painting guy is a godsend! Keep up the good work.
I was screaming (internally, of course) for you guys to put the island vertical before you even brought it up in the video BUT once it was moved there, I actually preferred it horizontal. It defines the kitchen space a little better and allows you to look out what will be a wall of windows! But you could always put it on wheels!
Me and my wife say go Vertical! It definitely opens up your kitchen/living space way more and you can make the most of all that counter space when you’re cooking and prepping food. Also if you have guests sitting at the island and some in the living room area then you won’t be talking to their backs if it’s vertical :)
I really thought I was going to love the island vertical, but I’m honestly vibing with horizontal more 🙈 you have the gorgeous view and you can add a little breakfast area with bar stools on the end of it! ALSO, I cannot wait for this new merch to come out!! 🙌🏻
I was leaning towards vertical until I read this comment. The streamlined flow would be nice, but horizontally if you have room to add an overhang on the counter and bar stools, then that would be nice! You might want the bar stools inside the kitchen so you can see the view and converse with guests sitting at the table.
First Horizontal looks great, plus when you'll have a view. Second Bob's hilarious, I had to call my sister about the casserole comment it was so funny (we grew up on those!)
Love seeing Bob, "there is no such things as bad dogs" is so accurate. Great seeing your choices in home reno, lots of inspiration. Eamon and Bec, don't ever change...
Keep it horizontal. Think about when you’re prepping food and you have company over. You can still talk to them while cooking and their sitting at the dinning table.
I think it looks better horizontal, but it would probably be more practical vertical because you can just turn around to use the sink or the other counter. Depends on what is more important to you. By the way, those stained glass shirts look pretty sharp.
I like the island horizontal you can put slightly into the kitchen and put an eating bar on the back. That way you’ll have a nice big workspace and extra seating. Also when it’s vertical it seems tight for the pull out you want to do under the stairs. Plus when you’re working at the island you can face your company who sitting in the dining/living room.
Exactly! Also you can see the water she said and I would personally love to be able to lean across it with my coffee in the mornings with a view of the lake, also dancing room, and it separates the dining area but doesn’t close off the entire room
OR Eamon and Bec might just be really AWESOME people who are willing to open their home to a furbaby who needs a home before he finds his forever home. Foster-parents are NEEDED and shouldn't be pressured to keep every animal they foster. You are not the only one making these comments. There are SO many!
@@eamonandbec A temporary home is such a kind-hearted thing to do for an animal, if you chose to keep him or not, you already did so much good by him. He's so cute, how come he hasn't been homed yet?
I like the island better vertically, it makes the kitchen feel more open and makes it feel like a more defined space. It will probably also be better for food prep being right in front of the sink and oven. And finally it will make the pantry and coffee bar more accessible 😊 Edit: maybe you could even do a little bit of overhang on the counter and have some stools
As soon as I saw Bob in the intro I knew it was going to be a good day! I vote for an island on wheels for more versatility! You two valentines are adorable!
So nice to see that Mossa is good with other dogs! I hope this gets added to his adoption information and it helps him find his furever home soon! Thanks for fostering! Ps - I vote mobile island. Otherwise I’m torn. Horizontal gives you more space to be able to move but I can see how with the counter extension it might seem odd. Vertical, I wouldn’t go much deeper but I could see longer
Vertically is the best. Yay Bob's back. We miss Bob and his pack. Love the idea of the bean drawer under the stairs. Can't wait to see the finished kitchen it will be so cool.

I really thought I was going to love the island vertical, but I’m honestly vibing with horizontal more 🙈 you have the gorgeous view and you can add a little breakfast area with bar stools on the end of it! ALSO, I cannot wait for this new merch to come out!! 🙌🏻
Ahhh such a tough decision... made even tougher by all of these comments and ideas hahah!
additional seating with a bar stools. solid idea!
My thoughts exacly 😮 I really didnt think So but horizontal❤️👍🐶
I was leaning towards vertical until I read this comment. The streamlined flow would be nice, but horizontally if you have room to add an overhang on the counter and bar stools, then that would be nice! You might want the bar stools inside the kitchen so you can see the view and converse with guests sitting at the table.
Agreed. I like it horizontally.
I definitely like the vertical island! There is a flow from the front door and creates a kind of entrance hallway
Normally I would agree with you but if they are having a gathering and people use the door there will be a lot of congestion in the hallway.
Totes horizontal, like people can chill in the kitchen and talk to people in the dining room and have a little “bar” in the middle😋
First Horizontal looks great, plus when you'll have a view. Second Bob's hilarious, I had to call my sister about the casserole comment it was so funny (we grew up on those!)
I'm team Eamon, horizontal because you do need a prep space to stare out at the water!!!!!
Turn the island “vertical” but have enough overhang at the dining room end of it to put 3 or 4 bar stools under it👍🏻
I like this idea!
This is what I like too !!
I don’t know why there are so many recommending an island on wheels....it will just feel cheap and rickety. Please choose a mounted, stable island🙏🏻
Love seeing Bob, "there is no such things as bad dogs" is so accurate. Great seeing your choices in home reno, lots of inspiration. Eamon and Bec, don't ever change...
We want more Bob!!!
@@belpack8989 Bob suggested it be movable, so maybe they’ll end up doing that
Vertical.... you can still talk to guests as there is no wall and it’s only 6 feet away.
@@jenniferresch3417 I was thinking the same thing :-)
Yes this is my answer exactly!
I believe that the “foster dog” has already found his forever home.
OR Eamon and Bec might just be really AWESOME people who are willing to open their home to a furbaby who needs a home before he finds his forever home. Foster-parents are NEEDED and shouldn't be pressured to keep every animal they foster. You are not the only one making these comments. There are SO many!
@@divekatdreaming 🙏🙏🙏
@@eamonandbec A temporary home is such a kind-hearted thing to do for an animal, if you chose to keep him or not, you already did so much good by him. He's so cute, how come he hasn't been homed yet?
Fostering is so important and something that is so greatly needed! Thanks to them for taking it on
I was thinking the same. He belongs in your home Eamon and Bec 💓🐶🦮
I vote for horizontal. Especially if you are going to have the pull out cabinets under the stairs. Always love a Bob appearance 💕
I like the island better vertically, it makes the kitchen feel more open and makes it feel like a more defined space. It will probably also be better for food prep being right in front of the sink and oven. And finally it will make the pantry and coffee bar more accessible 😊
Edit: maybe you could even do a little bit of overhang on the counter and have some stools
More food prep space with the vertical island and maybe you wouldn't have to move the sink!
Don't think be enough room for overhang and seating if vertical without blocking route. 🤪
Horizontal, perhaps have it on wheels, if that's a thing. Vertical seems to block the flow and space more. Keep up the great work
Horizontal! As a prep space or serving it allows more conversation and a view.
Please keep Mosa!💚🙏
Vertical! You want the island parallel to form a galley when you can spin around and use addition prep space.
As soon as I saw Bob in the intro I knew it was going to be a good day! I vote for an island on wheels for more versatility! You two valentines are adorable!
I love the relationship he has with his dad love Bob.
Is bob eamon father?
The wonderful laughter of Bob when EAMON 🥋 karate chops the drywall!
~ MAMA TELLE❤️
horizontal! you could put bar stools
Yes, a movable island would be great as they could change it up when they get bored! I think I prefer horizontal if it's going to be fixed though.
Vertically is the best. Yay Bob's back. We miss Bob and his pack. Love the idea of the bean drawer under the stairs. Can't wait to see the finished kitchen it will be so cool.
Horizontal or on wheels for sure!! Loving the pre-drop merch, moose and Bob
Horizontal!!
so funny... I love when Bob visits (works) and when he laughs at his son, PRICELESS!!!
Horizontal looks a lot better, it means there’s still walk space when the fridge is open and the bean can storage is open
Bob is and has been 100% totally part of your UA-cam team since forever, I hope we see lots more from Bob as well as Becs Dad as well ! More Dad content in your videos please ! Keep the team together x
