    As a therapist, and someone who is in recovery from an abusive relationship, this was - without hyperbole - one of the most important and effective analyses on Bloberta I’ve ever seen, and maybe truly be the only one so well done on UA-cam.

      Sadly i grew up as Bloberta. A father who wasn't good at being emotionally present and a mother who treated me like a random woman on the street rather than her child. A middle child as well and my mother made it extremely clear I was the accident child, she only wanted a girl and boy and I was the unwanted second girl.

      @@acacacacacacaccaca7666Dude, women are expected to rely on their husbands as the men make the money. And it's victim blaming to call the woman forced to be in a relationship the "abuser" because she has to rely on her husband. Wife's have two choices rely on their husband or divorce and rely on themselves.

    I think it’s worth noting that we know there is a stand alone sex shop in Moralton, and yet she chooses to go to a hardware store to get much more dangerous items… I can’t help but wonder how much of that is about Blob’s fear to break convention (even tho we see other moraltons in the shop from time to time) and how much is just her being SO NUMB it’s the only way she feels anything.

    • @naomistarlight6178
      @naomistarlight6178 22 дні тому +1

      I think it's because of her anhedonia. She keeps thinking bigger and tougher equipment is what she needs and that it'll take the place of the lack of loving intimacy in her marriage. That's what it shows, a progression in her drawer to bigger and bigger things. It's possible that she just couldn't find big or powerful enough in the sex toy store. Or that she also believes she should be punished for experiencing pleasure, and so thinks the pain has to be part of it.

    I think that there's a *very* interesting and important distinction between Bloberta being tone-deaf and her simply being untrained. If she's untrained, her being excluded is (to coin a phrase) "spare child syndrome" - the idea that Bloberta's only value to the family is as a replacement, and she has to forcibly create value by being "useful". If she's tone-deaf, on the other hand, then ableism has been a significant force in her life - Bloberta is *implicitly* valueless *because* she's disabled (by the standards of the family).

    What I appreciate about Clay is that he lets Bloberta sing and doesn't seem bothered by it.

  • @Gingersnaps_the_pumpkin_kitty
    @Gingersnaps_the_pumpkin_kitty 24 дні тому +322

    I think bloberta could sing given how she's able to hum perfectly fine.
    Someone who is medically tone deaf shouldn't be able to hum very well either if they can't understand things like beats or melodies or pitches.
    Someone who is untrained should be able to do something simple like hum because they just lack a musical education and training in things like breath control.
    If someone wants to correct this assumption with more information they can, but I believe her ability to hum speaks to her ability to learn to sing.
    She's just being convinced she can't possibly sing.

    • @riffshe20
      @riffshe20 22 дні тому +27

      Agreed, she learnt to sing and sings quite well, maybe because getting married she's away from her mother's negative influence, she sings so good throughout the show (specifically the turn the other cheek song and her belt when Clay says they'll go carolling)

    • @leitmotif7268
      @leitmotif7268 22 дні тому +41

      As a singer, I think Bloberta’s singing much higher than her actual range in an attempt to emulate her sister. She has a lower register when she hums and has correct pitch, instead of a soprano her mother could have trained her to be an alto but chose not to.

    • @uwu_shark
      @uwu_shark 21 день тому +26

      She is doing something I have seen throughout my time in chorus a lot of times, she is pushing her pitch up to a very high soprano to fit into the melody , when instead she would be a lovely alto, her singing isn’t bad at all she is just in the wrong range.

  • @illiardbilliard2355
    @illiardbilliard2355 12 днів тому +11

    32:10 As someone who only just now learned that Bloberta was meant to be a bad singer, I assumed that her extremely high pitch and vibrato was just her being so passionate about singing that she'd go way over-the-top due to excitement.

    I think that the reason why Bloberta punches Clay when she sees her reflection is because she feels like the man she set her sights on doesn’t really want her. Also might be a point about how in Christian sects that are rife with purity culture, women are blamed for their boyfriend's/husband's 'stumbling' sexually. The insinuation that is often meant is that a man starts being interested in other women, it must meant that the woman is not desirable enough. She’s really mad that things aren’t going how she expected, and that she feels alone and rejected again, and also that she hasn’t been helpful to Clay.

  • @Lilybug71
    @Lilybug71 23 дні тому +96

    I think Bloberta and Papermouth in the mentioned potential meeting both went for the bear because 1. We see papermouth take out his rage about his ex wife moving on his daughter’s bear and shoots it and shows guilt afterwards. 2. Most likely the reason you all proposed, maybe a bit of guilt from Bloberta when we hear Shapey actually convey his emotions for once and we’re just given that gut punch that each time he’s screaming or throwing a fit he’s looking for affection that Bloberta hasn’t been meeting because she just sees it potentially as ‘oh well babies just sometimes cry’ in the way she doesn’t quite see him as the growing child he is.
    I think maybe their bond could have formed over them both learning that their own emotions and turmoil have hurt their children and they both are trying to do better, maybe more or papermouths side and he inspires Bloberta.
    From what little we do see of Papermouths daughter they do seem to have a decent bond when she’s assisting him at work in that one scene and maybe Bloberta sees she can potentially have that with Orel shapey and block. I think originally Bloberta disconnected from Orel because Clay clearly makes his identity about being Orel’s dad, he wants to be the primary influence on his son and Bloberta probably fell to the wayside but if she left Clay I think she’d finally have room to try and bond with Orel one on one.
    I do wonder how all the boys would have responded to possibly having a step sister and Bloberta to having the chance to make a positive female bond that she never got with her own mother.
    Sorry for the ramble.

    One of my greasiest disappointments is that this show got cancelled. I was so interested to find out more about the characters and how they ended up (Bloberta, Clay, Nurse Bendy and Joe, Doughy, Stephanie). Though a lot of it was satire, there’s so many people in similar situations where they could be genuinely happy if they could be and do what they want, but feel they’re unable to.

      Its even more infuriating that the episode that got them cancelled was the one exploring how sexual abuse affected different female characters in the show. It was totally fine to have Orel sexually assault random women to satisfy his desire to masturbate, but the moment its shows that "oh no, sexual assault is actually traumatizing to the person being assaulted and ruins their life, who would have thought?!" It was suddenly too much for television

    As someone whose favorite Moral Orel character is Bloberta, I LOVED this analysis. You guys did a great job taking apart each layer of her, which often go overlooked or outright ignored in most videos I've watched analyzing her. Also I feel she's way too overhated, she's more than just this monster who kindled the flames to Clay's alcoholism.

    The repeating of words for comfort makes me read Bolberta as autistic and therefore her Father as well. It would explain why she was ostrosited from her family for being "different", explain the messy room (executive disfunction), the identity troubles, as well as her Father's detachment from her and her own detachment issues. The practice of stifling herself also reminds me so much of how autistics are told that they are too honest or speak too freely. Her practice of reading into things too much looks like missing or misinterpreting social cues.
    Shapey also reads as an autistic child who is heavily infantilzed because of his diagnosis. Its possible that Shapey was diagnosed at a young age which cause Bloberta to treat him like a baby. Because even with toddlers and children you are needed as a parent; But to some parents autistic children will always be babies.

    This was another great video! And as someone who finally saw the whole show (hey I listened to you guys on the Clay one!) I just have to add that the thing with the doctor in “Numb” that stuck with me the most, is the fact that I’m that “lost episode” of “Abstinence” Doughy tells Orel that in Moralton, anytime someone shows any kind of niceness towards someone else, they have sex because they don’t know what else to do. And in my opinion, they don’t know how else to feel intimate or connected because of the way their society works, where women compete constantly against each other and men are not allowed to show any vulnerability, pointing also at how Bloberta seeks being intimate this way because it’s the only way she and everyone else knows of how to feel a connection with anyone. Following this statement, I would also like to point out that Bloberta doesn’t seem to hold any connection with her friends or basically anyone aside from her family on her late life. Unlike Clay who at least has a small social circle on the bar that he frequents, Bloberta doesn’t have any apparent support system for her, which I also believe is one of the reasons of why she couldn’t get a divorce, maybe the thought of being utterly alone and judged by everyone else in her community was more terryfing than staying with him.

    disorganized lil comments
    if she did have amusia, thatd be interesting to see them develop over time. if its genetic, are there other family members who were alienated due to it who she might reconnect with? if its the result of a head injury, what happened? was it an accident or violence, perhaps at the hands of her mother?
    i think her repetition (verbally and physically, like with her cleaning) is definitely some sort of self soothing method
    bloberta and clay are such a fascinating duo, an actual double ouroboros of a relationship. they only bring out the worst in each other, but genuinely believe they dont have any other choice than each other. the characters of all time

    As a mental health professional with personal experience of BPD and neurodivergence, I believe that Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) is a crucial factor in understanding the complexities of these conditions. BPD often presents with heightened emotional reactivity and sensitivity to rejection, which aligns with the core symptoms of RSD. Additionally, the epigenetic nature of BPD suggests that environmental factors, such as childhood trauma, can significantly influence its development. This is particularly relevant to women and gender-diverse individuals who are often misdiagnosed with BPD when their symptoms may actually be indicative of ASD or ADHD, often accompanied by RSD.

    A detail I thought was interesting is how young Bloberta's room is so messy. We see her obsessively clean in the show, whether or not that's a habit she only picked up after marrying Clay is debatable, but it makes me wonder if she kept her room messy on purpose. Like it was her safe haven where she didn't have to feel useful or clean anything, almost like an act of rebellion or a reflection of how messy she feels on the inside.

One is that Blobberta had possibly some of the biggest indirect influence on the status quo going into the show through Clay. Whil Clay had already developed an association between physical punishment and love from his father, he had repr seed that and ignored any fatherly role. He was shown to be purposely fearful of the responsibility and avoidant. It was when Blobberta made it clear she expected him to give both advice and spankings to Oral and designated the study, that Clay had a flashback moment of the slaps he fished from his father. If Blobberta had not spoken up on these suggestions/expectations, it is unlikely we would have the dynamic of Clay and Oral. It is also interesting that Mrs. Censordall was the other equally female influence in this. She put the pressure on Clay to teach Moral about religion at the exact same time, resulting in Clay seeing Church as a solution to both criteria out on him.
    The next thing may seem less important but I do feel it both is important to the kind of person Blobberta is and even is interesting to think about in regard to later pursuance. She delivered Shapey. I'm sure it may be dismissed as just a visual gag and nothing too concrete about her other than she is tough..but I do feel it is very indicative of her character before and especially after. She refers to Shapey as het baby and deages him in her mind the entire series. We have a clear idea of why but now that we also know she DELIVERED HIM HERSELF, it puts so much more on that. Shapey is not just a reminder of her non-relationship with Daniel but more so a symbol of her independent solidarity. She conceived Shapey without her husband. She went through pregnancy with the father completely absent and her husband not being much help either. Sure he drove her to the hospital..after picking up their first kid outside of town while she was in labor..then SHE did EVERYTHING in the actual delivery. Dr. Potterswheel fucked out and abandons her. (That's where the future pursuance stuff comes in as we learn what we saw was not the first time..) While she was giving birth all by herself, Clay was doing that first act as a father she had pressured on him by himself. He even ripped her out of the hospital immediately so they could follow up on that and go to church. The entire experience was on Blobberta. You mentioned how she doesn't want to move on beyond the stage of Shapey still being a part of her but I think that runs deeper now as we know he represents her isolation while surrounded others..but also as another living thing. He IS a piece of her all alone to share company with. It's like the line in piano man about the waitress and businessman sharing a cup called loneliness because it's better than drinking alone..she is always alone but once Shapey grows up into his own person, she is TRUELY alone again. We also get an idea of just how adept she is to that state by this point. We know she was more timid in her earlier years but started to become more assertive in the imprisoned state when she met Glen. By the time they had Shapey though, the just takes command in doing things herself when Clay father's out at the worst possible time and Potterswheel nopes out on them all. She calls out but then just acts. She just starts doing everything herself like it was her obsessive cleaning routine. I feel the birth of Shapey and how it went down was a HUGE defining moment for her character and the impact of her role in the show. Everyone talks about the afair aspect but even in other videos I've watched on her, I don't see the birth of Shapey brought up when it comes to Blobberta. It's also a very visceral scene despite not really seeing it. We do get to see her utilizing the medical tools to keep herself dilated and cut the umbilical..but it's more the perspective that makes it feel cringy. We are seeing everything from the perspective of Shapey (or at least until he is born and then it's just where he was in the womb.) We see oral and his dad having their talk about babies and God as Shapey himself is entering the world through his mother's efforts. Despite Oral and Clay being the main visual focus, the attention is meant to be on the Blobberta giving birth while that occurs right in front of them. They are basically ignoring her and she them since she is kind of preoccupied. HUGE HUGE developments in the family dynamic withing a couple feet but split into two groupings, Clay with Oral and her with Shapey.

    I want to point out that Bloberta joins in joyously with the rest of the church in singing "I Hate You Jesus" and sings that song exceptionally well in the show's present. She is able to sing. Her mom just didn't want to teach her because her older sister was the favorite. You see that a lot with parental favoritism. The parent will spend a lot of time teaching the favorite something but make excuses to not include the unfavorites.

    I think blaming Bloberta for Clay’s alcoholism, which is something I’ve seen a lot, is really unfair. There’s a difference between pressuring someone to drink one time and doing it repeatedly and knowingly to slip somebody into self destruction. Is she to blame for essentially entrapping him in a relationship which heavily influenced his descent into depravity? Oh yeah, but he ultimately made the choice to keep drinking and use that as a coping mechanism.

      Yes, thank you. The truth of the matter is that even if Bloberta hadn’t encouraged Clay to drink that one time, it’s likely Clay would’ve become an alcoholic anyway because he already had poor impulse control. Someone else down the line would’ve offered him a drink and he would’ve spiraled from there. He only /seemed/ well put together in the beginning because he’s wearing a mask to fit in and not stand out. But you can see all through the episode how Clay’s true mental state sometimes slips out. He’ll say some out-of-pocket things that make Bloberta uncomfortable but that Clay will try to dismiss (like that comment about both of his parents being dead. It’s not true because his father is still alive, and his tone when he says it is unnecessarily hostile and makes Bloberta flinch in her seat). The man was repressed and bound to snap, whether Bloberta made an appearance in his life or not.

    It could've been that Bloberta wanted Sonny Bear as a transitional object for *her* relationship with Shapey. Like she realizes she can't keep treating Shapey in an infantalizing way, but still needs to at least simulate her need to be needed, and sees Sonny Bear as something she can project a maternal relationship onto.

    The biggest tragedy that is on a meta narrative level is that Roberta is a puppet and she's trying to play house with clay. To the point where it is just as fake as a dollhouse😢.
    She is no saint for effectively destroying Clay's life with exposure to alcohol but she is also a victim in a very real way in many ways. She is Not Innocent but she is certainly a victim

    8:15 -Double edged sword. Y s this can be true but it also seems to be a submissive excuse as well. His wife is domineering and neglectful of their daughter..but just like Blobberta..that's simply because she isn't perfect. No one is. It's ok that she is the way she is because she is no worse than any other imperfect person. This is the neutral stance of victimized enabler. We don't want to blame him as a victim himself but as an enabler to his children's own victimization, this is a bad thing. He's both help but also harm for her. He finds value in her but ignores fault in her mother.

    ok i don’t know if i’m making something out of nothing but with the two instances that clay uses the word rape “they take a perfectly good word and rape us with it” “you’re raping my son” bloberta responds in a way that makes me feel like she is deeply uncomfortable with clays use of the word
