I got cancer for DU. It's not from the radiation. It's from the dust particles created during impact that are the danger when inhaled or ingested. As an 11B, I was regularly patrolling areas that had been hit with DU rounds. I was exposed back in 2003 and have had many health issues since. At my local VA, tumors were found in an MRI followed by 2 surgeries within 3 days of each other back in 2022. The surgeon believes they got all the tumors out. Time will tell. I've already been predeceased by several others in my task force from cancer
Well it IS radiation. When it's in the solid form and you don't eat bullets - you are fine. Alpha can't penetrate skin. But when this thing shatters on impact and you breathe some of that radioactive "dust cloud" - this alpha is now inside of you. DU projectiles should be banned as a weapon of mass destruction. All the people in war zones, where military used DU projectiles get sick and not only this. It has genetic consequences. I used to do industrial xrays for the army and had to be trained and heavily educated on radialogical and radiation substances and devices. Yes - definitely the biggest hazard here is inhalation. I would have stayed considerably further away from the target or if I had to be near it, worn an N95 or similar.

These rounds made the meter go up to what sounded like about 300 counts per minute. That is NOTHING. Comically small activity. I'm a radiation protection technician. Trust when I say these bullets are more dangerous to you because they are heavy metal than because they're SLIGHTLY radioactive. So treat them the same as lead bullets and you're safe.
Probably a bit late now, but you should definitely wear a respirator when firing these, especially at close range, and it wouldn't hurt to decontaminate yourself properly afterwards. Alpha particles are very easily stopped even by air, but if they're sitting inside your lungs, they're going to be emitting radiation right into the surrounding tissue, and in that scenario they're much more dangerous than a beta or gamma source, because the alpha particles are much bigger and carry much more energy. That huge plume of sparks about 10 feet from your face is made up of small particles of Uranium. U-238's half-life is 4.5 billion years, so as long as it's in your lungs, it's going to be emitting radiation.

It's a cool and rare find. But I'm wondering where this guy went to look up the possible health hazards of freaking uranium dust, and them impacting steel just 5 feet away from your face. He was smart enough to know about alpha particles, but not smart enough to know that if they make it inside the body they'll kill you just the same as gamma rays would. I wouldn't trust this guy with keeping a gun pointed in _any_ safe direction, let alone keep it pointed away from people.

Amazing video! The velocity on the DUDS rounds are extremely impressive. On a semi-unrelated note, a while ago the UA-cam algorithm miraculously directed me to an obscure Austrian company called Ulbrichts whose two primary products are ballistic helmets (under Ulbrichts Protection) and car logos. Ulbrichts Protection (UP) have appeared to have designed their helmets with back face deformation in mind, but are accordingly heavy. UP offers 2 handgun-rated helmets, 3 rifle-rated helmets, a riot helmet, a SLAP-like Rifle-rated upgrade plate, 7 visors, 4 neck guards, and some miscellaneous accessories. Just wanted to put this company on your radar. Who knows, they might donate a helmet or two for an independent test.

Just wanted to add when shooting sabot (especially old sketchy sabot) you should remove the muzzle device to prevent the petals separating early and causing damage. This is why modern MBT’s don’t have brakes anymore, and also why M2’s are rated to fire SLAP rounds but not Barrett M82’s
this is legit the coolest ammo test ever put on UA-cam, I've always wanted to see how effective small-arms DU is. Luckily DU is mostly an alpha radiation source and will naturally dilute into the environment over time, so likely not a radiological issue to let a few off out in the desert

Take a tank round to the body/vehicle or B. start poking around a destroyed vehicle that has been shot with a DU round relatively recently and start licking the metal dust that was left behind. Basically it’s harmless unless you get into your body. I don’t know if Oxide had more information, but I was much more concerned how close he was to the target when shooting due to the metal dust then any actual shrapnel coming back since that DU dust is much more of a concern then get some DU shrapnel in my limited knowledge/understanding
Dude, 'only alpha'? Alpha emitting particulates are extremely dangerous inhaled or ingested into the human body. 'Dilute into the environment over time'? lol it''s got a 4.5 billion year half life. Alpha radiation only emits a centimetre or so from the source through air, the big problem is when an emitting particle takes up residency alongside human cells, lungs, stomach. Alpha emitting polonium was used by the Russians to kill Alexander Litvinenko in London, safe for the operatives to handle, they dropped it in his tea, once ingested he was a dead man.

I work at a place with high military traffic. Early-mid 20s kid came in to make a purchase, he was really nice, he was shaking bad the whole time while doing paper work and told me his handwriting might be awful as a result. I said no worries bro I completely understand, I have a really bad tremble in my dominant hand from a concussion from a car accident, I know your struggle. He told me it's never been an issue until the last year or two, doesnt have any genetic diseases, etc. I asked him if he has any idea what happened and he said he handles a ton of radioactive shit in the military. I forgot what his MOS is but he's essentially been Tanker since he joined as a teen, and does nothing but mess with tanks all day. Radioactive stuff like Depleted Uranium is an everyday thing for him (armor, tank shells, etc.) He said the military hasn't been much help in treating him but he's confident it's the radiation exposure. Scary shit dude!

You could shoot 30 rounds of this stuff and your "risk" of lung cancer wouldn't be higher than the average person living in Ohio.. Considering uranium miners inhale a lot more carcinogens daily and their median lifespan is only shortened by 10 years.
@@3rd.world.eliteAJ I agree, but it is worth pointing out that most Uranium mining is conducted with the ore in a frozen state, and the ore contains low concentrations anyway which is why refinement stages are necessary to dissolve it and precipitate it back out. More frequently miners are exposed to radon gas due to inadequate ventilation, which is far less hazardous, but not great. One of my patients was hit by spalling from DU penetrators striking DU reactive armor plating. When he got to me, he was so full of DU that it was difficult to get radiographs or CT scans since he was exposing the film and CCD arrays. Most of it was removed during surgery but some remained and in such small quantities it was deemed not to be much of a risk. Dangers associated with DU exposure are mitigated by radiosensitivity of the specific tissue, time, distance, and shielding. In this case, he had no distance, no shielding, but the amount of radiation emitted would (after surgery) be so low over such a long time period, and the area the peppering occurred was mostly muscle tissue far from the thyroid, eyes, and gonads, such that the potential for later complications was pretty low. Uranium risks are more nuanced than 'it kills you by existing' and DU is less risky, but I wouldn't go playing with it. The most hazardous thing he did here was get this close during firing because of the flame hazard and spalling.

If it helps attenuate your desire somewhat: These rounds are, in a sense, a case of _"You do not sh!t where you eat"_ really. Depeleted uranium is like asbestos, or hexavalent chromium: It is _really_ good at a particular thing, and available in abundance, but with the downside of also being quite toxic and/or carcinogenic. These DU rounds are only fit to fire in remote locations where your session will be a one-off, or in actual war zones where no-one cares about the aftermath until later. But your local shooting range? Or your own back yard? Not adviseable.
Really wish you were able to have had a camera crew like Ballistic High Speed come film these rounds. Seeing what happens with the sabot and the pyrophoric effect when it hits target would’ve been fascinating.
This is one of those videos while I love the slo-mo you capture, I desperately wish some of the other channels with access to that extremely expensive equipment would collaborate with you. To see those rounds travel at hundreds of thousands of frames per second would be categorically invaluable data. I could imagine even capturing how the uranium ignites under high stress in enough high speed that we could begin to really see what's at work here. There are times where it looks like there are fragments that hold their glow for quite some time after hitting the ground and the sort of value in observation we could gain really would be something.
From very briefly studying WW2 tank ammunition for WOT years ago, Shells originally were designed like bullets with a sharp penetrator tip. In turn tanks received FHA (Face Hardened Armor) to cause the tip of the shell to crack. Shell manufacturing then changed to add both a Ballistic cap (for flying through the air), as well as a flat cap to cause the armor to crack without damaging the penetrating tip. these in German terminology were APCBC, Armor Piercing Capped, Ballistic Capped. It would be very interesting to see a subcaliber round designed in this way and tested against ceramic armor.

Bro, you need to not do this anymore unless you have precise geiger measurements. When soldier were issued these they were given geiger counters that were basically radiation sponges that would soak up rads similar to human flesh. These patches were then supposed to be sent back to a lab at HQ to make sure when to stop using said rounds. Unfortunatly most modern armies stopped using DUD rounds cuz this work was almost never done due to the fact that merely firing one round would expose you to the critical levels that should've put you in the threshold for removal from use of said rounds. In other words, Armies didnt want to pay out injury costs for cancer and radiation sickness so they lied. Also you should really get yourself checked out before doing this again. Also keep tabs on your hands and lungs for rashes, boils, and look out for a fever that never ends. You were really irresponsible here on so many levels. I pray for you man, you're playing with literal death for the clicks man. Be wiser!

Similar rounds were developed in ussr, even with rifle made specially for them, but after 20 years of development they concluded that discarding sabots were lethal for your squadmates and they never figured out how to fix that issue it was called 7,62/3,0х47B ОПС (OPS)
Thank you for the video. Take care as burning uranium results in uranium oxide particles that often have a mean dimension smaller than 2 microns. Highly suggest wearing a good CBR protective mask anywhere near burning depleted uranium. Particles smaller than 2 microns become permanently imbedded in lung tissue - alveoli. The problem is that while it is true that a piece of paper will stop this level of radiation - there is no piece of paper in your lungs. This results in the imbedded radioactive particles irradiating surrounding tissue for the rest of your life. This is particularly dangerous in the lungs as blood is continuously circulated through the alveoli - so the entire blood volume is potentially exposed to radiation. During the first Gulf War US soldiers were exposed high uranium oxide concentrations from burning depleted uranium while collecting souvenirs in the vicinity of burning Iraqi tanks. REF: VA Health problems associated with depleted uranium DU is a potential health hazard if it enters the body, such as through embedded fragments, contaminated wounds, and inhalation or ingestion. This is because U’s radiation, while of high energy, penetrates poorly through tissues in the body. Simply riding in a vehicle with DU weapons or DU shielding will not expose a service member to significant amounts of DU or external radiation. The potential for health effects from internal exposure is related to the amount of DU that enters a person’s body. Inhaled DU particles are likely cleared from the lungs over several years. DU fragments may remain for many years. Older studies in U manufacturing workers show high exposures to U may especially affect the kidneys. To date, in a group of Veterans exposed to DU in friendly fire events, there has been no health impact to the kidney noted, however, recent research shows there may be an association between elevated urine uranium in these Veterans and lower bone mineral density (BMD). The BMD results require further study to determine if they persist over time and researchers and clinicians continue to monitor the health of these Veterans.
Worth mentioning that the kidney damage mentioned is likely not due to any radiation effects but down to Uranium's toxicity. Uranium is a toxic heavy metal much like lead and has similar renotoxic and neurotoxic effects in both acute and chronic exposure. This is probably the main thing to be concerned about regarding individual exposure.
Didnt use the respirator while shooting it? That may have been a good idea. Although 2 loads of DU probably won't have any ill effect. I just have heard of gunners in the AC130 or tanks shooting DU getting seizures, weird cancer and lung irritation just from being near it during firing.

Depleted Uranium feasible for future use? possibly. the thing is, you're using a 24 inch barrel rifle, firing it from a point blank distance. I wanna see this thing fired from an AR10, SCAR H, HK 417/MG3, FN MAG ect. Something in common infantry use with variety of barrel lengths, and fired from likely/variable combat distances of 10-30-50-100 meters. you can penetrate armor with a 20 inch barrel AR with green tip from about 10 meters already, but move far a bit and the armor does it's job. this thing could probably penetrate ceramic like ratnik from 10-30 meters, but put more distance or the barrel length and things could change. same with all penetration tests, a lot of them do not account for this.

Honest suggestion to try Swiss (Swedish?) 7.62x51 SLAP ammo, and also to make absolutely sure you don't use a muzzle device. SLAP rounds tend to have a habit of tumbling from rifling not designed specifically for the round, let alone from the additional disturbance of a muzzle device. Did a quick look while writing: PTR-10 PRICK, and it is indeed Swedish
Those spent rounds would sell for big bucks on ebay to element collectors. I expect 400 dollars plus per piece. I wouldn't be surprised if unfired round pulled out of the case would probably be close to a 1000.

Yes - definitely the biggest hazard here is inhalation. I would have stayed considerably further away from the target or if I had to be near it, worn an N95 or similar.

These rounds made the meter go up to what sounded like about 300 counts per minute. That is NOTHING. Comically small activity.
I'm a radiation protection technician. Trust when I say these bullets are more dangerous to you because they are heavy metal than because they're SLIGHTLY radioactive. So treat them the same as lead bullets and you're safe.
Probably a bit late now, but you should definitely wear a respirator when firing these, especially at close range, and it wouldn't hurt to decontaminate yourself properly afterwards. Alpha particles are very easily stopped even by air, but if they're sitting inside your lungs, they're going to be emitting radiation right into the surrounding tissue, and in that scenario they're much more dangerous than a beta or gamma source, because the alpha particles are much bigger and carry much more energy. That huge plume of sparks about 10 feet from your face is made up of small particles of Uranium. U-238's half-life is 4.5 billion years, so as long as it's in your lungs, it's going to be emitting radiation.

It's a cool and rare find. But I'm wondering where this guy went to look up the possible health hazards of freaking uranium dust, and them impacting steel just 5 feet away from your face. He was smart enough to know about alpha particles, but not smart enough to know that if they make it inside the body they'll kill you just the same as gamma rays would. I wouldn't trust this guy with keeping a gun pointed in _any_ safe direction, let alone keep it pointed away from people.

On a semi-unrelated note, a while ago the UA-cam algorithm miraculously directed me to an obscure Austrian company called Ulbrichts whose two primary products are ballistic helmets (under Ulbrichts Protection) and car logos.
Ulbrichts Protection (UP) have appeared to have designed their helmets with back face deformation in mind, but are accordingly heavy. UP offers 2 handgun-rated helmets, 3 rifle-rated helmets, a riot helmet, a SLAP-like Rifle-rated upgrade plate, 7 visors, 4 neck guards, and some miscellaneous accessories.

Just wanted to add when shooting sabot (especially old sketchy sabot) you should remove the muzzle device to prevent the petals separating early and causing damage. This is why modern MBT’s don’t have brakes anymore, and also why M2’s are rated to fire SLAP rounds but not Barrett M82’s

I work at a place with high military traffic. Early-mid 20s kid came in to make a purchase, he was really nice, he was shaking bad the whole time while doing paper work and told me his handwriting might be awful as a result. I said no worries bro I completely understand, I have a really bad tremble in my dominant hand from a concussion from a car accident, I know your struggle.
He told me it's never been an issue until the last year or two, doesnt have any genetic diseases, etc. I asked him if he has any idea what happened and he said he handles a ton of radioactive shit in the military. I forgot what his MOS is but he's essentially been Tanker since he joined as a teen, and does nothing but mess with tanks all day. Radioactive stuff like Depleted Uranium is an everyday thing for him (armor, tank shells, etc.) He said the military hasn't been much help in treating him but he's confident it's the radiation exposure. Scary shit dude!

You could shoot 30 rounds of this stuff and your "risk" of lung cancer wouldn't be higher than the average person living in Ohio.. Considering uranium miners inhale a lot more carcinogens daily and their median lifespan is only shortened by 10 years.
@@3rd.world.eliteAJ I agree, but it is worth pointing out that most Uranium mining is conducted with the ore in a frozen state, and the ore contains low concentrations anyway which is why refinement stages are necessary to dissolve it and precipitate it back out. More frequently miners are exposed to radon gas due to inadequate ventilation, which is far less hazardous, but not great. One of my patients was hit by spalling from DU penetrators striking DU reactive armor plating. When he got to me, he was so full of DU that it was difficult to get radiographs or CT scans since he was exposing the film and CCD arrays. Most of it was removed during surgery but some remained and in such small quantities it was deemed not to be much of a risk. Dangers associated with DU exposure are mitigated by radiosensitivity of the specific tissue, time, distance, and shielding. In this case, he had no distance, no shielding, but the amount of radiation emitted would (after surgery) be so low over such a long time period, and the area the peppering occurred was mostly muscle tissue far from the thyroid, eyes, and gonads, such that the potential for later complications was pretty low. Uranium risks are more nuanced than 'it kills you by existing' and DU is less risky, but I wouldn't go playing with it. The most hazardous thing he did here was get this close during firing because of the flame hazard and spalling.

If it helps attenuate your desire somewhat: These rounds are, in a sense, a case of _"You do not sh!t where you eat"_ really.
Depeleted uranium is like asbestos, or hexavalent chromium: It is _really_ good at a particular thing, and available in abundance, but with the downside of also being quite toxic and/or carcinogenic.
These DU rounds are only fit to fire in remote locations where your session will be a one-off, or in actual war zones where no-one cares about the aftermath until later. But your local shooting range? Or your own back yard? Not adviseable.

Really wish you were able to have had a camera crew like Ballistic High Speed come film these rounds. Seeing what happens with the sabot and the pyrophoric effect when it hits target would’ve been fascinating.
This is one of those videos while I love the slo-mo you capture, I desperately wish some of the other channels with access to that extremely expensive equipment would collaborate with you. To see those rounds travel at hundreds of thousands of frames per second would be categorically invaluable data. I could imagine even capturing how the uranium ignites under high stress in enough high speed that we could begin to really see what's at work here. There are times where it looks like there are fragments that hold their glow for quite some time after hitting the ground and the sort of value in observation we could gain really would be something.

From very briefly studying WW2 tank ammunition for WOT years ago, Shells originally were designed like bullets with a sharp penetrator tip. In turn tanks received FHA (Face Hardened Armor) to cause the tip of the shell to crack. Shell manufacturing then changed to add both a Ballistic cap (for flying through the air), as well as a flat cap to cause the armor to crack without damaging the penetrating tip. these in German terminology were APCBC, Armor Piercing Capped, Ballistic Capped. It would be very interesting to see a subcaliber round designed in this way and tested against ceramic armor.

Bro, you need to not do this anymore unless you have precise geiger measurements. When soldier were issued these they were given geiger counters that were basically radiation sponges that would soak up rads similar to human flesh. These patches were then supposed to be sent back to a lab at HQ to make sure when to stop using said rounds. Unfortunatly most modern armies stopped using DUD rounds cuz this work was almost never done due to the fact that merely firing one round would expose you to the critical levels that should've put you in the threshold for removal from use of said rounds. In other words, Armies didnt want to pay out injury costs for cancer and radiation sickness so they lied. Also you should really get yourself checked out before doing this again. Also keep tabs on your hands and lungs for rashes, boils, and look out for a fever that never ends. You were really irresponsible here on so many levels. I pray for you man, you're playing with literal death for the clicks man. Be wiser!

“Regardless of the risks” there are still kids being born with severe defects and leukemia in Yugoslavia, Iraq and probably will be for some time, sure the rounds using need to hit something solid like steel before they get hot enough to vaporise but even some tank crew that have used them have gotten sick.

Similar rounds were developed in ussr, even with rifle made specially for them, but after 20 years of development they concluded that discarding sabots were lethal for your squadmates and they never figured out how to fix that issue

Thank you for the video. Take care as burning uranium results in uranium oxide particles that often have a mean dimension smaller than 2 microns. Highly suggest wearing a good CBR protective mask anywhere near burning depleted uranium. Particles smaller than 2 microns become permanently imbedded in lung tissue - alveoli. The problem is that while it is true that a piece of paper will stop this level of radiation - there is no piece of paper in your lungs. This results in the imbedded radioactive particles irradiating surrounding tissue for the rest of your life. This is particularly dangerous in the lungs as blood is continuously circulated through the alveoli - so the entire blood volume is potentially exposed to radiation. During the first Gulf War US soldiers were exposed high uranium oxide concentrations from burning depleted uranium while collecting souvenirs in the vicinity of burning Iraqi tanks.

Health problems associated with depleted uranium
DU is a potential health hazard if it enters the body, such as through embedded fragments, contaminated wounds, and inhalation or ingestion. This is because U’s radiation, while of high energy, penetrates poorly through tissues in the body. Simply riding in a vehicle with DU weapons or DU shielding will not expose a service member to significant amounts of DU or external radiation.
The potential for health effects from internal exposure is related to the amount of DU that enters a person’s body. Inhaled DU particles are likely cleared from the lungs over several years. DU fragments may remain for many years. Older studies in U manufacturing workers show high exposures to U may especially affect the kidneys.
To date, in a group of Veterans exposed to DU in friendly fire events, there has been no health impact to the kidney noted, however, recent research shows there may be an association between elevated urine uranium in these Veterans and lower bone mineral density (BMD). The BMD results require further study to determine if they persist over time and researchers and clinicians continue to monitor the health of these Veterans.
Worth mentioning that the kidney damage mentioned is likely not due to any radiation effects but down to Uranium's toxicity.
Uranium is a toxic heavy metal much like lead and has similar renotoxic and neurotoxic effects in both acute and chronic exposure. This is probably the main thing to be concerned about regarding individual exposure.

the thing is, you're using a 24 inch barrel rifle, firing it from a point blank distance.
I wanna see this thing fired from an AR10, SCAR H, HK 417/MG3, FN MAG ect. Something in common infantry use with variety of barrel lengths, and fired from likely/variable combat distances of 10-30-50-100 meters.
you can penetrate armor with a 20 inch barrel AR with green tip from about 10 meters already, but move far a bit and the armor does it's job.
this thing could probably penetrate ceramic like ratnik from 10-30 meters, but put more distance or the barrel length and things could change.
same with all penetration tests, a lot of them do not account for this.
This wasn't intended for ceramic, steel, or soft body armor. It was intended for use vs vehicles. Seems nobody here realizes.

Honest suggestion to try Swiss (Swedish?) 7.62x51 SLAP ammo, and also to make absolutely sure you don't use a muzzle device. SLAP rounds tend to have a habit of tumbling from rifling not designed specifically for the round, let alone from the additional disturbance of a muzzle device.

depends, you can make muzzle brakes that work well with sabot rounds but obviously not many rifle brakes are made like that.
@@Wehra96 true, but I think finding the correct muzzle brake might be harder than finding the round and/or rifle itself

SLAP in nothing for that plate. Tried it already.
Those spent rounds would sell for big bucks on ebay to element collectors. I expect 400 dollars plus per piece. I wouldn't be surprised if unfired round pulled out of the case would probably be close to a 1000.
