There is also a surprising amount of people who don't even understand Hamas started the war to begin with. They think Israel started the war out of pure evil intents because social media told them and they don't know it is a lie. For them it is a geocide because social media didn't tell them what Hamas is doing. It also being backed up by how news from the war spread around: Israel estimates when telling the news, Hamas reports.
Lack of critical thinking also plays a factor. Not many questions how Hamas can identify 500 casualties in 10 minutes...
It gets worse when even the UN is backing up Hamas despite their own investigations suggested Hamas is the evil one and lies.

Much less personal. It relieves them of their own moral responsibility and are therefore not only free of the discomfort and fear, but can rather feel self righteous and even superior in their positions. Both a protection and an ego boost at the same time as has often been demonstrated in history by many who have and will do or sacrifice anything to avoid their said egos being challenged. They are in essence moral cowards and have chosen the path of the self righteous bully that can avoid the whole thing by well, being a self righteous bully. They no longer have to see or admit any dark potential in themselves because it not only frightens them but is even beneath them. They are " the good ones" you see. Everything in their minds is a case of "the good and the evil" the "right" and the "wrong" which paradoxically and ironically becomes the root of the problem. Where it applies is if they are "ignoring" the truth, fundamentally twisting it in adherence to doctrine (seriously, read the indicated passage), or believe the "truth" of others over actual research.
It is somewhat dependent on how you deconstruct the question that was asked and how the individual came to that wording. Also relevant is that this is a "debate format" (as opposed to "lecture" or "Q&A" format) where one of the goals is to discredit the speech of the opponent or to score "points" by making the other side unable to support their position. Ultimately, the question was asked in such a way as to illuminate the Islamic faction, Hamas, as the "poor oppressed freedom fighters" as compared to Israel's supposed heavy-handed, goose stepping, even "genocidal," actions in rooting out said faction of militants.
FACT: On October 7th, Palestinians celebrated in the streets, distributed cakes, and helped kidnap Israelis to Gaza, into the tunnels. They also, in exchange for money, kept the kidnapped individuals in their homes to blend them into the population.
People ignore the fact that after Hamas invaded, civilians followed. People also need to understand that the moment you hold a weapon you are a target and a threat. It doesn't matter what you wear, how old are you and what you did before.
If they treated the captured Israelis like guests, they may have been decent people caught in an unfortunate situation, If they treated them cruelly they will, most likely have to answer for it.

I believe it was John Spencer who said that Israel is doing the impossible. They are protecting the Gaza civilians better than in any other urban war in history. The number of civilians killed is by an order of magnitude lower than what one would expect. John Spencer is considered the world's leading expert on urban warfare. He literally wrote the book on it.

Just to put Gaza in scale. Deaths in Gaza per day (Hamas + civilians): 148/day. Deaths in Okinawa during WWII (Japanese military + civilians) : 1,750-2,360 / day. And you are entirely correct. War is terrible, but it isn't AT ALL genocide. War ends when one side says "we give up".

If I were a family member of one of these kids it would be of great concern. Perhaps someone should ask them, if your neighbour came into your home and kidnapped one or more of your family members and held them in the basement; would you not use every resource available to you to get them back? And what if innocent people in their house were hurt or killed because they refused to move out of the way, would you say, “Oh well, we’ll just have to stop, you can keep them and do whatever you want with them, I don’t want others to get hurt” ? These kids own family members should be concerned about their reasoning.
Very shortly after Oct. 7, one of the Hamas leaders (Sinwar?) openly stated that this was the planned strategy, that many Palestinians would die but it was their purpose to serve Islam and become martyrs in the fight against Israel.

Evil people know that good people don't WANT to hurt innocents and they WILL hide behind them to get away with murder. There comes a point where you have to stop letting evil people get away with it, even if it means getting your hands dirty. It's good that you might place importance on the moral high ground and try as hard as you can NOT to cause collateral damage and innocent deaths but at some point you simply have to recognize that ending the threat may be worth a short-term sacrifice.
Otherwise the threat never ends...and the sacrifices keep happening.
I'm not 100% sure but I think it was Netanyahu who said that "Hamas uses its civilans to protect their weapons whereas Israel uses its weapons to protect their civilians."
