I can not stand the sound of chewing… I had a manager a few years ago who used to eat triscuts at her desk which was 3 feet from me… sounded like she was chewing rocks.
What a wonderful instructor. Way better than one I had years ago... so laid back and calm. I've learned more watching the videos than I did years ago.... Great job flying
Following along in flight simulator 2020, I'm able to see many of the land marks in your video, especially house mountain and the gold course/dump area
Yes I agree with everyone complimenting the instructor. He is excellent and has a great style that allows the student to clearly understand and follow. He also goes over what he feels is important and explains why he does that. This is all very helpful in remembering. I personally believe the key here is the CFI is prior USAF. My instructor is also prior Air Force and is a lot like this one. I picked up an immense amount of knowledge and unofficial hands on experience as a GIB (back seater) from several pilots I flew with during my air force career. They were excellent and I'm forever thankful.
I personally think it would be relaxing. I remember smacking gum and my instructor doing the same... until I got braces... then only tic tacs. :( Think of it like a stress ball.
Bringing back lots of fun memories. Back when I was flying only had the VOR. Putting in this distance before take off going out 20 miles was something we never had. First stall was scary then it got old hat. Was taught full spin recovery. A friend that just got his license told me they never taught him full spins. Has that been removed from training for some reason or did his instructor miss teaching him? I have it written in my log book when I did full spin and recovery. You have a great instructor. Before long landing doing slips will be fun. Crabbing then slips for landings became one of my favorite things to do. Your Instructor is teaching you well, so everything will be second nature and you be able to look out for other traffic. Thanks for taking us along.!!
Great tutorial, the video showed it all that’s note worthy. Commentaries from the back seats, was cause they weren’t in the cockpit, and where their minds were focused on more, than learning or teach one to fly 👍
In Boise, I learned at the Boise Airport, Class C, and they give us flight following at the schools there... I think its an LOA (letter of agreement) procedure, but we don't even have to specify that we want it, if you state you're going to the south practice area Boise departure/approach never terminates radar services, and just gives flight following. And dep/app rather have you on frequency in contact with them flying around the area, because they can move or restrict you and move others below or above you.... gives them control, and you more safety, second pair of eyes. I like two communication controlled air space :)
The best Instructor I have ever seen! Man, go ahead and chew doughnut! It doesn't bother me a bit. Many thanks for sharing these videos. I've learnt many things in them. How can I get the Instructors contacts? I want to request for his time to train me too. Happy landing.
Glad you like the videos and it's refreshing to hear a comment that's not complaining about gum chewing. The instructor's name is John Burt, and he can be reached at 865-742-1782. Give him a call an do some flying!
I know where this Airport is it took me a minute because I know of McGee Tyson but that’s in Blount County so I remember seeing this Airport from The Tennessee River. Seem like it was all grass runways back in early 2000’s but I could be wrong. It’s possible I couldn’t see the asphalt from the in the boat I was in. I’ve been to Boomsday 2-3 times which is amazing event
What kind of gums is this? spring-loaded? Though, a wonderful and informative instructor, wonderful aircraft and promising pilot. Thanks for the upload.
I would love to have a straight shooter bubble gum chewer instructor like him. I do believe that when in a airplane it's best to chew gum before you get in the air, relax and draines mucus that may be in your body.
Yeah. I would travel often when I was a kid and my mom always made sure we had a big pack of gum before we left for the airport. If we realized we didn’t have one, thank goodness for the 24 hr CVS in my hometown
This video is awesome and I’ve watched a bunch of your videos if I was in your seat I wouldn’t have been able to deal with him chomping his gum into the comm… I can hardly put up with it watching the video
Never one time did I ever see a clearing turn.... FYI dont do clearing turns during a checkride guess what u get to do the checkride again..... That is just as important if not more important than getting flight following on a training flight in the training area......
Excellent point. Clearing turns should always be performed before maneuvers (reference Airplane Flying Handbook FAA-H-8083-3B). In this video, although it was not explicitly called out, clearing turns were done in concert with the 360° turns between 17:19 and 18:23.
I'm on my 4th lesson with this CFI. He takes payment by module. First module includes beginnings of flight plus simulator, then you move to a Citabria for aerobatics. All segments of PPL are paid by module. You can get your PPL for just a bit over $9000
Instructors in the United States Marine Corps are not so nice I was training to be a A-10 pilot. Thank God I feared my instructor more than crashing the plane. I was taught fear is nothing the Marine Corps pilot experiences but gives to our enemies.
Joe M You want to wait about 5 min before you start testing/checking instruments. The gyro instruments take a few minutes to spin up and fully erect to indicate properly. Also, it’s important to check your instrument indications during your first protected turn while taxiing, doing so will make sure that your instruments indicate correctly during a turn.
Everybody has a system that works to their own advantage. Rental airplanes have a "Hobbs meter" with an oil pressure-activated switch, so you're clocking time (and paying for it) when the engine is turning. On the other hand, the airlines have switches on their landing gear so that their planes (and so their maintenance schedules) mark time only when the wheels are off the ground.
I can remember my third lesson my instructor said check your testicles left and right if you mess up and you don't follow my instructions I will remove both of them that got my attention.
just saw this series, Anyone know for sure what aircraft this is? He could throw us that bone. Cessna 172, 182? LOVE the CFI. Shame the audio keeps cutting out.
Love the interaction between you and CFI, and that was a LOT to swallow during your first lesson. I concur with the CFI that flight simulation software is a very good investment, but ONLY if you invest in the appropriate control devices. Sounds like you did, and it served you well. And enough with the chewing gum complaints, guys! Sheesh. You all need to go get laid or something.
Hi Captain Tommy I’m 54 how do I go about pursuing a PPL - I have taken subjects - Math physics chemistry and English language I have completed my pre college degree many thanks Captain
Holy cow.....I would jump out of the effing window, do I didn't have to wait for a mountain to fly into, just to get away from the instructors chewing with his effing mouth open.
Keep on with your gum instructor sir! He's earned the right to chew all the gum he wants and doesn't give a crap if it annoys someone. You cry babies don't deserve an instructor at his level.
I'm so sorry Mr flight instructor but we are going to have to cancel this and all subsequent lessons immediately. I'm not paying money to listen to your chewing gum like a five year old girl. How is a student suppose to concentrate with that disgusting noise going on ? If this guy lacks the personal awareness not to know that loudly chewing gum whilst teaching is not only dangerous, disgusting, and just downright rude then what else is he missing?
oh thats what the noise is... I couldn't figure out what the wach wach wach noise was...I dont think its the instructor chewing though...watch the mouth of the pilot flying..
He's tearing that wrigley's up.. He's old school so Im betting it's double mint.

Exactly
This instructor is first cabin straight up! Hat is off to this guy. This student should be feeling very confident he is flying with the best!
What a gift this series is, thank you both so much for making this available ❤
Definitely
Your instructor is a book of knowledge. Hats off to him and thank him for his service.

The CFI loves to smack that gum. That would drive me crazy!

Phil B It’s definitely the CFI! You can really see him smacking at 20:13! Hahaha
Yeah theres no reason to chew with your mouth open like that. Very annoying!
When I was taking lessons and I heard that.... I think I would have taken up skydiving..
These videos are awesome, thanks so much for putting them together!

Great tips from an obviously great instructor. Thanks for sharing

Hey what do they mean by simulator? Like on PC or the ones they have at the flight schools?
Did the student actually fly any of that? Bloody hell, the instructor seemed to be ‘in control’ the whole time.
The position of the pupil seems to be IN the roof of the cabin, doesn't it?

How does logging time work? Is it only for when the wheels leave the ground to touchdown? So this was 30 minutes logged?
Nope. If the plane is on you’re logging time.
