Thanks for posting. These real time virtual lessons are great in giving us all an idea of what's involved in training to be a pilot.
For those annoyed by the gum chewing, it's just happens now and then.

The gum chewing is annoying, but he might be dealing with a problem clearing his ears. He might also just like gum. Frankly if the gum chewing is too much of a distraction, then flying might not be a good choice for you.
Aside from that, his instruction is outstanding. As a professional pilot and former instructor I plan on sending both of my sons through his program. I can't thank Tommy enough for these videos, fantastic prep prior to starting the program.

The student is very responsive, well done. Love the instructor. It's almost as if he is teaching him to fly the Cessna like a fighter jet. Quick sudden moves, a fire hose of instructions and maneuvers. He's got to be military. Probably ex Air Force or Navy. Nice videos.

This instructor is gold. What better person to learn from than a military trained person. Those folks know all thats needed to know and I can only hope that if I ever get the chance to learn this fine art that my instructor if not a descendant of military personal then has been trained themselves by such a person and passes on this fine knowledge.
As far as the gum is concerned my driving instructor would pick his nose then try to show you his findings to teach to focus more on what your suppose to be doing. Anyone watching this I consider to be learning here and those who are bothered about it are not focused completely on what they should be doing. It is an art, I think to be able to focus on what is needed rather than what is annoying.

To all you cry babies focusing on the CFI chewing gum instead of the wisdom he's passing on to new pilots should know John Burt (CFI) flew F4's in VietNam. He's a Naval Aviator and it's disrespectful to mock him for not being aware he's making that noise. Look past it and you may learn something!!

    • @heidbummer274

As an instructor this chap is top notch - knows exactly what he is talking about - great vids also..... rdlez, flying F4s in the past does require respect, although it does not give him a god given right to chew gum in this fashion whether knowingly or otherwise. So get off your high horse and always remember to be a little humble about Nam - the Americans got kicked out by a rag tag military force.
Tommy, I have only reached lesson 4 so far - you are doing great. Looking forward to seeing the rest and the aerobatic vids.

Million things can get to you if you let them (especially while sitting behind a keyboard). I personally would love to have someone as knowledgeable and communicative as this CFI. I'd always remember the gum...and hopefully everything else he taught me. :D @Tommy Thomasson thanks for the video. Might try to do that in some of my training too.

  •  3 роки тому

I really like this instructor's lesson plan format. This instructor has his lessons structured the same way every time. He uses the same language too. He has the student do everything in the same precise order and manner every time. By the time the course is finished the student will see himself doing these procedures in his sleep. This is a good lesson for instructors that teach other things also. Having a structured program may seem boring, but structure really helps the student to learn faster. Ignore the gum chewing, the camera, what the instructor is wearing, how they look, or any other distractions. Focus on the lesson.

Too funny. I was going to comment on the gum chewing but see everyone else has already. I will still ask you what I planned on since I also would like to know how the headsets/mics works.
Question is; do you hear that constantly? Or is it like when talking to ATC and only on button press? Like many aviation enthusiasts, I use P3d, but there's no way to answer some radio questions in it. I quit smoking a few years ago and the chewing makes me laugh because it reminds me of me when I quit and imagine him going through the same withdrawals, haha.
Two other questions (anyone can please answer).
1- Can you rent extra headsets? I hope to go for my license this coming winter and plan to fly mostly alone, but maybe have a couple passengers at the same time here and there. It would be rare to have two passengers so just curious for that random 3rd person.
2- I live in Southwest FL. Key West is an hour from me direct (over the ocean) in a C172s. This direct path would be from the west coast of FL so there wouldn't be any landmarks. Due to a fair risk of rapidly developing weather and no landmarks I imagine it wouldn't be allowed for a non-instrument rated pilot but a few people have said you can fly it VFR. Is that true? I love IFR but due to expense I don't expect to have my IFR ticket for 2 years minimum.
Thanks for videos. Nice to learn things from this perspective (laying down, watching youtube).
PS. I read just recently that a lot of airports have started changing that pilots keep the transponder on ALT and no longer to standby but I guess the article was only than I thought to hear it in these videos from 2015.

When taxiing on the ground, do you have to keep a constant pressure on the right pedal to keep the nose going straight? I'm just getting back into flying after a good number of years out of it and i don't remember planes I've flown in the past having this aspect to them. the plane I'm flying now which is a Cessna 152, I have to keep a constant pressure on the right pedal when taxiing on the ground.

    • @mattbasford6299
      @mattbasford6299 6 років тому

Jim Connoy short answer is no. There's little rudder authority when you taxi. Most of the turning is due to the pivot on the front wheel.
