Hello! I have tried searching and watched MANY of your videos trying to find the answer, but I can't find WHY you grow in containers vs in the ground, specifically pertaining to blackberries. In one video, you mentioned "gophers and things", but this is all I can find. I just ordered a mix of Poncas and PAFs and had planned to ground plant, (Zone 7b) but now questioning that. Please explain? Also, my apologies for bringing blackberry questions into a tomato video, but I wanted to post to a recent video to hopefully get your response. Thank you for your time.

99.9% of all blackberries are grown in the ground… I would imagine. So there’s absolutely nothing wrong with growing them in the ground. I used to have 700 feet of blackberries in the ground.
Growing them in containers was an experiment for me because of the gopher problem and because I’m just getting a little older, and because I can control where the new canes pop up.
When you grow in the ground, they can pop up out in the walkways or just about anywhere.
In the container, obviously they are “contained“. So, several reasons I choose to grow in containers, but that should not discourage you from growing in the ground. Again, most people grow blackberries in the soil, not in containers.

@@BIGALTX Thank you for your reply! After I wrote this, I started thinking about it. I'm still not sure how you regulate your watering reservoirs in the barrels, but I thought that growing in tubs would sure make weed killing a lot easier! Then I thought, place the barrels on a strip of weed barrier and it'd be better! THEN I thought, why don't I just use some weed barrier, poke holes for the BBs, stick them in the ground and drip water. So, back full circle. lol.
On another topic, my son bought us some Osage thornless berries a couple years ago. They really took off this year. I have read that Osage is a floricane, not a primacane, but I have a bunch of primacanes with blooms. I still have the tag attached showing them as Osage. Now I'm wondering what we actually have? lol.

@@trbig67 I have weed block under my BB tubs... doesn't last very long. Weeds come through.
I don't think planting in week block is a good idea because the new canes have to come up THROUGH it... not sure if that would work.

What about placing cardboard under the fabric. I did this with my raised beds and tubs and it works pretty well!

My wife bought me one last year, and everything he's saying is exactly true. I love it and it's far better than using mason string. At Least faster.

Also fig trees when they’re small. Nothing pisses in your cereal bowl like and expensive fig tree broke over after a wind storm

I just can't do it. I have spent way to much money on my garden this year to buy another gadget. I'll just use my tomato clips again. Look out next year though!
