- This is a little ramble about some critical advice that's stuck with me about having a comics career. I don't remember who originally said it, so if you do--let me know in the comments and I'll pin it!
Hope you enjoyed this video! If you're new here, welcome!

I'm a middle-aged guy who's been working as a game artist for more than 15 years now. But comics have always been my first love. I hope to retire from gamedev in the next couple of years and pursue my dream of making comics.
You can do it! Just keep that fire burning until the time is right to devote your all to comics! 😁
Congrats bro
Finally someone pointed out how artists aren’t the best at making connections in art. I am Good and Nice. I working on fast. Though I don’t have the ability to practice my speed cause I don’t actually know how to get the first paying job. It seems like getting in front of an editor is a forgotten dark ritual, that is never spoken of. 😅
Yeah and you know what they say, “when someone breaks into comics, they plug up the hole.” So it’s like anyone on the outside has to constantly look for a new way in. 😂
@@Comicbooker UGH! I know, RIGHT! I really wish this wasn't a thing. Cause it fosters unnecessary competition between artists that have completely different styles. I think I need to become an editor, which is some how even harder, to create opportunities for multiple artists, and different styles to flourish. Also there should be a comic artist union so we can standardize pay, and get the older artists a pension.
Maybe try putting a timer to a drawing you have in mind, and limit yourself to that time frame to get the piece done. That is a way for you to practice your speed.
I loved this video! Thank you Sir Andrew for making this and it's such an inspiring thing to watch. Your art works are one of a kind! I am planning to buy your Kare-Kare Komiks too!
Thanks Jan! I appreciate it! Hope you enjoy my book! 😁
Awesome vid and tips. Thanx a bunch dude. I'm a card, dice, and board game playing type of person when it comes to socializing with others. Is that something that you try ta do on your spare time?
Yes! At various phases in my life I’ve been super into D&D, Magic the Gathering and board games (Catan, 7 Wonders, etc). It’s just so fun 😁
Love your video! I think these days an artist must be an expert at two of the these, and only a little less good in the third. Great summation on your part.
Thank you! I think it’s a good 3 things to remember while working to break into comics.
How would you recommend practicing your perspective in terms of drawing ?
I really do hope to read your comics one day!
I have a bunch of stuff you can already read for free online! Check out my website andrewdrilon.com. Fingers crossed I can break into the U.S. comics industry!
You definitely have all of the three. Congratulation!!
OMG haha we’ll see! The proof will be in the work! :D
Congrats Andrew!!
Thanks Tom!
Congratulations, Andrew!
Thanks Paul! 😁
Love your motivational whiteboard drawing
Thank you! I drew it after reading this inspiring comic called Killjoys: National Anthem! :D
Really from the heart!
❤️
i have a question, im also aiming for continuing to become a comic artist and the thing is, i wanna know what course i should take in college for that?
ive searched up a bit and got to know, fine arts is an option but i want opinions of others too
Fine arts is an excellent choice! It'll force you to experiment with multiple mediums and find your style through exploration. If you want to go with courses that are complimentary, you could also do something in Marketing/Communications (the skills here help, plus there's always steady work in this field) or Business (an area I'm sorely lacking in, but the whole comics field is a business!)
@@Comicbooker oh thats great! tysm!! the only thing for me is i didnt wanna continue commerce field in college and wanted to explore art more, but im not sure how my thought process will change over time, still thanku so much :D
What software do you use for sketching/paneling. For someone just learning should I jump to learning to do sketches on paper or directly on the software?
I prefer to plan on paper (lots of thumbnails), and then execute a rough draft in the iPad app Procreate, which I then build up to a finish.
I think I am all three but I really don't know where to look for a job, I worked for one year in a webtoons company, they found me on facebook but that was luck, nobody uses fb nowadays.
You are amazing!
Aw shucks thank you! ☺️
Dude, that painting of yours is sick!
I hope for your sake that you are good and fast.
@@108Romato haha that comment of mine was a compliment. "Sick" is a positive thing in that context.
Thank you! It was inspired by Bacchus the god of wine!
@Comicbooker I think I saw you in the art students league.. are you still going there?
Yes I am! I’ve been doing mostly online classes this past year but I’ve been popping into the building here and there over the summer. If you see me in person, say hi! 😁
I'm not fast... at all..
It’s okay for now! Speed takes time (pun notwithstanding) and practice. I’m not sure I’m fast enough yet either. 😅
Well, I'm nice at least. Lol
LOL exactly what I thought to myself when I first heard this advice! 😂
Good luck with your career! Here's the source for the Neil Gaiman quote: ua-cam.com/video/2OwRUyZMKwI/v-deo.html
Omg THANK YOU!!!
