- It seems there's some confusion on what Megatone mouthpieces are... Hopefully this video clears that up.

Re: "This is a normally proportioned mouthpiece on the inside" (Bach Megatone)
Well yes for the most part - but the Megatones are not 100% the same as the standad Bach's on the inside.
The regular Bach mouthpiece models have a #27 drill/bore/throat and the Megatone versions have a #26 - the cup and backbore are essentially the same (albeit the slight change in bore forces very minor changes).
And the reason for this is that the extra weight of the megatone also affects the feedback the player receives and it'll firm up the slotting a bit - both of which can give the impression that there's more resistance (even though there isn't really)
The printed mouthpiece (intonation woes aside) sounds almost like the instrument has a cup mute. Interesting to see the effect on the sound, even if it makes it impractical for normal use.
best brass channel nowadays!
Are you going to do a collab with christopher bill?
We've tried in the past to schedule something, but he's very busy, I'm quite busy, and nothing's eventuated.
@@TrentHamilton well, we know now that it happened!
Can you make a video concerning the meaning of mouthpiece specifications? Something that explains how all the different parts of a mouthpiece change/affect the sound. I haven't yet found a video properly explaining this. I find your videos very interesting, but I'm lost when you talk about "shanks" and "bores" and things like that.
Yes each instrument has it's own range of acceptable depth of cup for their prospective mp's, stray past these and the results are dire :D
i found the shape of the transition from cup to the throat of the shank and the size of the hole to be crucial when designing my tuba mp.
I wonder what changing the cup shape from a curved "U" shape to a straight sided "V" would produce?
btw Trent, thats a beautiful looking MP in your trombone :D
Thanks Mike :)
How about printing a mouthpiece that is proportionally the same, but the cup is scaled up? Like, a trumpet shank but the cup of a small trombone mouthpiece, etc.
A trombone mouthpiece doesn't fit far enough into a trumpet receiver to be any useful. But Jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon uses (I believe) a sort of double cup mouthpiece with interchangeable shanks that works on both trombone and trumpet, and he's frequently seen using it too.
That’s gotta sound terrible tbh.
Been looking for a demo of this style of mouthpiece before replacing my flugelhorn with a megatone -- THIS VIDEO HELPED in more ways than I assumed.
I've got an antique trombone from a trader magazine in HS which came with a mouthpiece cup I'd never seen or played since cause I loved the shit out of that style of mouthpiece and in buying a flugelhorn I've been searching for anything to replace it's mouthpiece only to discover the name of the shape of my favourite trombone mouthpiece.
The Megatone has a larger throat (#26) than a standard Bach mouthpiece (#27).
What’s the tune being tested on the mouthpieces? I’ve heard it before, like in the song “Come on Eileen,” but I believe it’s a stand-alone tune
It's called 'Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms'
@@UKBeatlesFan94 also sampled by Dexy's midnight runners
I use a Megatone 3C trumpet mouthpiece as my daily driver. While i think the differences are too subtle for an audience to pick up, what I like is how it redistributes the weight of my instrument. With other mouthpieces it can be a bit bell-heavy, but with this mouthpiece it makes the weight much better balance. Not to mention it’s a Bach, which I tend to find most comfortable.
Thanks for telling those of us who didn't know!
OK kids remember: A meegatone has more meetal!
2:50 I was expecting an explosion
I thought I might be the only one familiar with that cartoon gag!
Does anyone know the name of the song he played
Megatone mouthpieces are cheaper to make because of less lathing, but around twice as expensive as standard Bach mouthpieces. Also, the primary reason they have a different tone, is the bore (throat) is slightly larger. Still fine mouthpieces, though.
Im getting one for my tuba 👍
"Toobah" get outta here
Trent, you should try printing a deep cupped tuba/cb trombone mouthpiece. That'd sound interesting
Why didn’t your trumpet explode when you played that song? Was it not rigged with cartoonish dynamite trap?
When you started playing that tune on the trumpet i expected it wouldve exploded once you played the high note.
Vega_Omega Yeah, I was dissapointed he didn't go sharp a half-step for his own personal safety!
Your printed mouthpiece was too deep to be effective. I think that the best comparison you could show would be between an American cornet mouthpiece (essentially a trumpet mouthpiece with a cornet shank) and a British cornet mouthpiece (which is very similar to a flugelhorn mouthpiece). There is a large difference in tone. I believe Dennis Wick has both.
I wonder if the material that was used on the 'printed' version could have had anything to do with that awful tone.
Do you have a tenor trombone or contrabass trombone?
Norfolk & Western 611 lmao, he HAD a contrabass trombone...
Jake 3752 yep. just saw the vid
I vaguely recall hearing that the contrabass is getting repaired.
I have at least 5 tenor trombones. My contrabass trombone has been fixed - I'm just waiting to receive it back.
Trent Hamilton wow you have at least 5 tenors wow! And are you going to play rhe contrabass when you get it back?
does that apply to trombone mouthpieces too? because ive had and still have friends that have very deep looking mouthpieces for their tenor trombones and ive always wandered if they were that deep
I do believe so. Different mouthpiece manufacturers make mouthpieces differently. It's most likely that they are using the same model as these trumpet mouthpieces displayed here, but I'm sure there are some makers that make their mouthpieces exceptionally deep. You can always just ask your friends if you can see their mouthpiece if you're truly curious.
Also, I've used my bass trombone mouthpieces on my tenor for when I accidentally misplaced my tenor mouthpieces and everything was perfectly okay. I've even used a tuba mouthpiece on my bass trombone, and while obviously the partials and just general playability was all out of whack, the intonation didn't seem to suffer all that much.
This makes me wonder how much of Trent's experience is caused by the depth of the cup, and how much is caused by the material.
It took some getting used to, but I started using a Bach 5A on my Olds Ambassador cornet for sitting in with my kids' homeschool orchestra and it did darken the tone noticeably. Haven't tried a Megatone, but it's my impression EnglishTMTB has the right of it in a previous comment.
Skye boat song is one of my favourite tunes to play on the bagpipes. You are the only other person I have heard play it on a different instrument. Very nice. 😁
Sorry if I cant help that the musical selection reminds me of loony tunes with Yosemity Sam.
Can you supply the 3d model for the mouthpiece?
is more easy the low notes on that printed deep mouthpiece? sounds more big in that register
second
Fourth. And eugh that deep cup mouthpiece sounds horrible
It does indeed - but that's mostly the intonation, which is a result of imbalance... in theory, you could balance a cup that deep out and make it playable.
In practice, there's simply no point.
After getting a cheap plastic flugelhorn, that what you described, is a flugelhorn mouthpiece...
Whatever you do, do NOT buy a "gold-plated" knock-off mouthpiece. It is simply just unsilvered raw brass. ALWAYS get silver knockoffs.
I received a 3c Segatone mouthpiece for christmas and was so excited, my dad then surprised me and I received a Schilke 13A4A, and It is all I use now.
Nice. I've got a Shilke 13A4A and it's a nice mouthpiece :)
When I played trumpet (I do trombone and euphonium, now) I used a Schilke 13A4 for years and loved it. It gave a bit of help with the upper range, but would still open up nicely in the bottom of the horn. Worked very well with my old Claude Gordon Benge.
I could hear him saying MEEGATONE before I even clicked on the video
I have played on a bored out Bach 10 1/2C since 1977. Never figured out why guys fool around with mouthpieces. Instead of cheating with a Megatone, why just do long tones, the old way and build your tone?
WHAT ?????????????????????? ZERO !
Omg I'm the 100 comment
Can you have a look at Shagerl Apredato mouthpieces?
What about the knock off mouthpiece? How does it compare?
For me it’s possible for me to hit double high C’s on my Giddings Boreas played on Largebore Edwards but I can get regular high notes on my mega tones to slot better on my small bore tenor using a Bach mega tone but I can’t play above a high c
Wonderful channel, must be an English professor as a second occupation.
I wonder if the sound of that unnaturally deep mouthpiece becomes more usable if you pull the tuning slide to make a trumpet in A. It's on it's own (besides the intonation) not a ugly tone but absolutely too dark and muffled for a trumpet.
What is your opinion of the Chinese or Patiti knockoff of the Back megatone?
What is the best euphonium mouthpiece in your opinoin? I own a parker 5g lance laduke mouthpiece and want to see more.
I bought such chinese version 3c and I was really satisfied Dont know what will happen to the alloy in a few years. We ll see
If I were to find a deeper cup trumpet mouthpiece, do you have any recommendations?
Do you ever plan on finishing that double shank mouthpiece? I was really looking forward to it.
The tune is all those endearing young charms by simone mantia
That trumpet is still more in tune then 6th grade trumpet players
what is the difference between a 3c megatone and a 5c megatone in regards to the type of edge
What is the piece that you plqyed to demonstrate the mouthpiece?
I want to hear u play a jazz standard with a Dd/E trumpet.
I play both the normal 2C and the megatone and I noticed recently that the high B is flat with the megatone but with the regular I can play it in tune. For the rest the megatone is darker, blends more with violins, has a more objective, less lively timbre which imho suits well contemporary classical music which we all love of course :-p
First
Lmao i know the comment that was the inspiration for this video
Was that Those endearing young charms?
Hi
i have a bach 1G megatone for bass trombone playing and i love it
I almost bought one for my bowline lip. I’m glad you pointed that out.
But why? Why does the deep mouthpiece do what it does?
What is the trumpet behind him on his right?
TRENT YOUR ON A FAIL ARMY VIDEO!!!!!!!!!
I play saxophone why am I here
I moved to a Bach 5c megatone mouth piece a couple months ago and to me it just feels a lot better than a normal mouth piece
How does 5c megatone differ from a normal one? , I use a standard 3c
Very good information!!!
1:58. That’s what she said
I did not know that.
I use a 51 Shilke D on my trombone, which is typically for euphonium. It works fairly well, but it doesn't fit very well on my face. Do you know of the trombone equivalent to this mouthpiece?
Arin George the schilke 51d is interchangeable with euphonium I'm not sure what you mean when you ask which one is the trombone equivalent because they're basically interchangeable lots of trombonist use the 51 D as their normal trombone mp. A schilke 50 maybe? I've tried schilke 51Bs and they have a little bit less of the darkness and more of the tromboney edge you might be looking for.
Honestly you'd be better off just learning to get used to what you have. Rich beautiful tone is so much easier on the 51D and honestly that's so much nicer in my opinion.
I'm pretty sure it's in between a 6.5al and 5g. But I'm not completely sure
hello! I recently arranged a movement from Rachmaninoff's all-night vigil for brass ensemble and I'm wondering if you'd be interested in recording it
Which movement? The fifth movement (Numc Dimittis) is my favourite.
It is indeed the fifth one, it's my favorite as well. Would you like the parts?
Trent Hamilton If you like, on IMSLP you can find my arrangement with parts or you can email me at josiahdavanzo@gmail.com
Dude your so cool
I bought a megatone 3c today, and the differences between my regular 3c and the megatone were not in the slightest bit subtle. For me personally, it works incredibly well. I can play with much more accuracy, force and range than I could on the standard mouthpiece. Perhaps it's that slightest bit heavier, but the upsides outweigh that con to an unmeasurable extent.
Love u dude
12c
Get a Wagner tuba ( horn )
I think he's shown one before, or at least a tuba similar to that instrument.
Maybe it's my inner horn talking, but I really like the sound of the deep mouthpiece. I know I know it's impractical, but a boy can dream...
I WANT THAT SIX VALVE TRUMPET!!!
