I did eventually replace the bad HDMI board from a $40 new: "scratch and dent" receiver model: str-dh550 off ebay. both models hdmi board were identical. It was going to be around $100 to get the board separate from sonys authorized parts websites. basically you can get these receivers used on ebay for what it would cost for the part.
before buying a new board you could try baking the faulty board in the oven or blasting it with a heat gun to reset the solder connections. This has worked for me on all kinds of boards in different devices. Works more often than not. Just UA-cam "bake motherboard" and follow the same steps.

@@DIYHVAC Thanks for the video , i have an old Sony receiver str k850 that won't memorize preset radio stations no more, i have to manually put in frequency in order to tune in station ,but if i try to set up another frequency it looses the first one and so on, this might be old caps, what you guys experts on radios think i should look for, thanks
I have a similar issue on the STR-DN840. The HDMI port was shorted and burned out some of the filter capacitors and also the HDMI chip (you can visually see a burn mark somewhere in the middle), that is where the short typically is. Replacing the HDMI chip and connector (with filter caps) would work and would probably be cheaper than the whole board.
I had a cable guy come over and he did something back there and it made a loud feedback noise. It worked for a while, then started going into protection mode. Now it has sat in the spare bedroom collecting dust. I'll try this, hopefully this is the problem. I checked the fuses and all are fine. It was only about 2 years old when this happened, quite frustrating.
For my receiver, I took off the cover and unplugged the power from the board. Then plugged back in. I also them held down the power button while plugging into the wall. I'm not sure which one was the fix, but my unit now works again.
That is the reset mode of amplifiers, the chip qof the main board in programmed at the setting from you. When you do that reset the chip is going to reset. (Got two jvc avreceiver same model number 7cm tall and 15kg 😅) sounds amazing 1 of those reset all the time when i plug it in the wall becouse of a defect the other one does remember my settings.

Just got the str-fh 540 off a guy for free... The problem is... He had it up very loud and a while later it just shut down.. However...its not in protect mode... BUT...theres no display on the front face.. Any ideas??
Check the power supply fuses. Check the power supply voltage coming out should be 120volts before the transformer and around 10-20 volts after the transformer.

It could be one of speaker out transistors that are bad or power supply issue. There are videos on how to test and replace them. just search testing and repair stereo transistors.
How about a real fix instead of just just a workaround. Maybe you should also show or have a seperate video on how to really fix it and tell people about it or include a video link. Not helpful at all

you can also easily use the Optical Inpurs for original surround sound

The protection circuit isnt working properly, if you disconnect any of the internal bridges its supposed to go into protection immediately

If its not old and still under guarantee, just send it back saying it is faulty..... Simple
