Man UA-cam has started recommending these to me for some reason. I watched all your videos back in the day and it's crazy revisiting all these memories of MH3U. I was starting highschool when I watched this originally, now I have a degree, a job, a house
I'm so glad that you're doing these tutorials again- they were really helpful when I was someone coming into Tri as a new monster hunter player.
That was, for the most part, the greatest tutorial I've seen in a long time.
In fact the only thing I didnt hear was the cooldown for wyvern fire.
I used LS and SH for a long time, crafting and upgrading gunlances because I wanted to try it. Now thanks to you I know the basics.
Let the Hunt begin!
Nicely done, I've considered the gunlance one of my mains for a while now and even I learned a few things from this video. Thank you.
ive been using the gunlance forever now, and i didnt even know there was a such thing as charged shot! thank you so much, i love watching your videos!
Your videos are absolutely fantastic, and very thorough. I'm new to MH, I played a bit of Tri before going right to 3U, and I'm looking for all the info I can get, so your channel has been fantastic. Thanks dude!
Great video Shepard and something I've actually been looking for for a couple of days since starting to main the gun lance. Thanks!
Damn, best MH tutorial I've seen on the net :-). Just wanted to say to keep up the amazing work and keep bringing us this amazing stuff!
Well done Shep. I'm going to look forward to more people picking up my favorite, and in my opinion the most underrated weapon, the Gunlance.
Awesome vids dude, love the music and the tone of your voice it all goes perfectly. Keep the vids coming!
I haven't used a gunlance for a while now after getting to G rank. The Jinouga X set has Laten Power +2, razor sharp, Thunder Atk+1 and Taunt, but I recommend using the Rath Soul Z set for its Critical Eye+3, Mind's Eye, Earplugs and Health-10.
Health-10 can be gemmed out and Earplugs can be upgraded to HG if you gem it right. The G rank Wroggi set doesn't have as good skills as the High rank set, so you'll need to grind a bit.
Spread the Gunlance love! ♥
Great tutorial Shepard, iirc you forgot about the upward charged shot (i.e. block attack and then hold R and A), which is a nice variation to the standard charged shot to reach higher monster parts. I might be wrong, but I can't recall having seen it being used in the video.
Was hunting a great jaggi while watching this video. Between the music and your voice I actually dosed off and the jaggi carted me.
Sometimes I feel like this channel is too hardcore for me... But I still love it. Great job.
I've been using the Gunlance since the launch of 3U and felt like I had a good grasp of the combos until I watched this. I had no idea you could do a second upward thrust (X+A) at the end of the double stab! That's so much better than the downward thrust. Also the full reload after sidestepping. I wish I had known all of this sooner!
Extremely good tutorial and awesome tunes. Thanks.
Thanks for the helpful video Shepard, I'd love to see a bowgun one (preferably light) in the future. One thing you forgot to mention is if you fire and quick reload, then press X after you will go straight into a slam attack. Not exactly crucial I know but helpful if you want that shotgun attack that little bit sooner.
Cheers for that. Been using the LS & SnS for a while and wanted to learn how to use the Gunlance. I'll check out your Hunting Horn guide soon also.
Thank you so much Shepard. you're not really releasing the gunlance Shepsheet but because of this i can now finally compile my own Shepsheet copy on Microsoft excel with your videos. i hope to eventually have a detailed and organized Shepsheet that i might release on the internet if i feel like it would help others and they might appreciate it. by the way I'm very sorry for calling you a 13 headed Shepsheet hogging North Korean dictator the other day on your stream. i meant no word of it.
To expand a bit more, here's how I categorize the situations for the gunlance:
Normal: Weak to fire.
Wide: High overall armor (good raw damage from charge)
Long: Everything/anything
Even with those categorizations though, I still prefer the gunlance now over the lance. Explosive damage is still damage, and I'd prefer to reset my combos by exploding than having the choice to counter like I would with the lance.
great video, nice song, too! thanks shepard, looking forward to more tutorials and gameplays!
One combo that I enjoy using when the monster is flinch is:
F. Thrust -> F. Thrust -> Charged Shelling -> Q. Reload -> Slam -> Burst Fire.
Of course if the monster is tall you can push in a upward thrust into charged shelling as well. I find this combo working pretty amazingly in offline, as the monster that I hit usually get flinch just a few hits after.
i figured it out on my own little by little.. and OMG it blew my mind when i figured out all the different moves you are able to do with a gunlance... at first i thought it was just gonna be a lance like weapon with some shooting gimmick
Thank you for the amount of effort you put into the amazing videos~!
Glacial agnaktor set is pretty awesome too~ guard+ guard up+ and sharpness
Great tutorial. Very comprehensive. I look forward to the next.
Tons of awesome data. Thanks for posting.
wow that tutorial was amazing!
though i do wish that at some point you would consider releasing the Shepsheets on the TeamworkCast web site for others to improve upon their weapon skills through the use of various Shepsheets. eventually im going to calculate the exact amount of certain hits it would take to kill various monsters with my gunlance via this information. again i thank you for releasing this video.
Thank you so much for doing this! I felt like a nooblett wielding this weapon! But now I feel a lot more comfortable!
Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but while you can hop/evade after an attack, you can't after a shot - but you CAN if it's a CHARGED shot. So, if you feel safe enough at the end of x+x+shot, you can charge the last one, hop, reload, continue.
Amazing timing, I decided last night that I want to try getting into gunlance.
Shells gradually lose their effectiveness as you enter g-rank because the damage just cannot keep up with the amount of life monsters have. That's why learning to incorporate the shelling you have to extend your combo is the best way to learn, as it becomes part of your damage, rather than you primary source of damage.
To be the best at the gunlance, you cannot ignore either part of the weapon.
Skills, buffs, or items that increase your attack power do not affect shot damage.
Hi Shepard, you forgot to mention that you can also use the charge shot after a quick reload and if you release the R button you can quick reload after charge shots
Good guide man, just what I was looking for.
Alright, guess I still have a little learning to do. Thanks Shepard. I started with Tri so gunlance is a brand new weapon for me to use.
Yeah, I'll be including a little extra segment in the next video I upload later tonight.
I gunlanced that quest. I recommend bringing flash bombs, farcasters, ancient potions and materials to make more of them. TRY NOT TO USE THEM ALL ON IVORY LAGIACRUS. He's the (relatively) easy part. Brachy & Azure Rath are the problem. You'll want to flash Brachy & try to kill Rathalos. Their health isn't very high so there's a good chance you'll kill Rath by using this method. If not, use the farcasters whenever you get in trouble. Then Brachy is all alone. You should also bring traps.
Thank you for teaching me how to Gunlance effectively Shepard.
You forgot to mention that you can also cancel the moving trust into a charge shot by quickly pressing guard+a which will give you the movement of the thrust and the attack of the charge shot instead of the actual upward thrust.
yesss, I fully support the bow guide...as I am terrible with the bow.
just so everyone knows, you can do quick reload after charge shots. just unshield and click the regular button you do to quick reload.
Wroggi is a great set for gunlances. It gives razor sharp and has 5 slots on it, so you can gem in artillery master. Same goes for high rank.
You can also do a wyvern fire immediately if u do a x+a -> x -> x by pressing another x+a after that
It's a good weapon. I'll talk about it more in the weeks to come.
VERY good tutorial :) thanks
but i think you forgot to mention the ability to do normal/charged shots right after moving thrust, or like half a second later when your moving thrust gets to the upper thrust, to do a vertical shot :)
its usefull when you want to benefit from high mobility of the move, but dont want to hit with your weapon because of sharpness, or if you just want to do shooting attacks
Yeah, hold R and press A after any stab attack to do charged shots. I like to use it during the shielded poke as I feel its a quick way to do more damage if I have a safer opening.
The background music is amazing
Yay! Tutorials again!
Nice tutorial, I'm tired of using switch axe, I might like this :)
The song is called cold fingers by OooO
No, it doesn't affect it. Gunnery king (artillery +15) shortens the cooldown by 30 seconds.
Ima go home and work on gettin me a good gunlance. I've pretty much been hammering the whole time, but the gunlance will be a nice change of pace.
I was farming royal ludroth using the red rook gunlace and just as he was getting ready to do his water ball spiting charge attack I began charging wyvern fire and and the moment the ludroth was going hit me wyvern fire blasted him in the face breaking his crest and protecting me from all damage. That was the moment I fell in love with the gunlance.
When using the gunlance I always go for bombardier (unless I'm doing explorer runs).
Amazing tutorial and amazing music! ^_^ You rule Shepard
That set I mentioned is already a G. Agnak Set mixed with some S. Uragaan parts.
Not a fan of the Lance since it doesn't have that rushing thrust (it has that rushing spear move that has a ton of delay for my tastes).
I'm practically happy as long as I can get in a double poke and 1 charge shot.
I think what the lance had goin in MHFU was pretty decent, I'l admit I was a lance user in Tri and getting your Agnaktor+ set damn made you invincible and with my talisman I was able to gem in Evasion +1 and Guard Up, pretty much it was so easy to take just one lance (Alatreon Lance) and get the only armor gear you need for the lance because the dragon element and its raw dmage still outdid most other lances. In MHFU you really need to get different lances same for armor.
Did you know that you can spam charge shots, when you charge the last shell, keep hitting R + A and you will do Charge Shot - Quick reload - Charge Shot - etc
I killed Villiage Alatreon with a gunlance. Took almost a half hour. But it was probably the easiest weapon to do it with. I just continually spammed upward charged shots on him. Worked like a charm. I use the same technique on Diablos, and they get wrekt by it.
I didn't know I could draw into a guard.
Learn something new everyday
Depends, the gunlance is quite difficult to use straight off the bat and is easier to master if u can use a lance
You can also use wyverns fire after an upward poke!
Hey Shepard, quick question: Lance vs. Gunlance? Pro & cons? I can only focus my noob-ery in one at a time...
Love the videos and podcast, keep it up!
Fantastic job .
I think I just got a small glimpse into... The Shepsheets!
Well, I was actually talking about the Gunlance itself.
Expert is just the 15 point of Artillery. 10 points gives of Artillery gives you Artillery Novice, 15 gives you A. Expert.
I think you forgot to add somethibg very important here the long backhop. Basically if you press down before and after a stab you can perform that move very useful in catching up to enemies
Will you be doing a walk through like tri? I remember way back when i started tri and was stuck on the barroth urgent i looked up your vids and it really helped out, now I'm an MH addict. Thanks Shepard
The reason I like the gunlance is Agnaktor: bounce off? just fire and he's melted again
This is extremely helpful! Thank you Shepard! Could you do a Switch Axe Tutorial Plz?!
Baron's Blazon was my go-to in Low Rank :)
As faar as i know there is a Faar Backbward Hop (a bit tricky to perform but realy nice to use) it should be mentioned^^
yea i would like one too, i even had the nibbelsnarf bow, low rank even took 20 mins
amazing, that was really informative
Do you think it's interesting to stack artillery and bombardier?
Great tutorial, but will you be doing be doing tutorials for other weapons, such as bowgun?
:0 I love u dude (not the gross kinda way) Your givin the percentage values of attakcs!! Where did you get these bro?? I love usin these things for math!
"Seems a bit much"? Not sure what that's supposed to mean, but that's a good looking set.
In MH4U, I've been focusing on GL. My biggest issue is the mobility. I'm used the constantly sheathing and unsheathing the GS, and I'm trying to break that habit and be unsheathed for most of the fight. But a lot of monsters will charge log distances away, I don't always know whether it's better to sheath and sprint over to them, or try and backstep towards them, etc.
if you are looking for status dealing, gigginox is a good armor set :)
Switch axe guide next please! :)
Very nice. Are you going to do a tutorial for every weapon?
sweet this will be perfect once i get my wii u .. sooooooon
I Have to try a Gunlance for sure O.o This is the only weapon I didn'y played yet in Monster Hunter. I have over 400 hours in my career...
I was thinking of something that gave me Guard + or something that eliminated the recoil damage since that's pretty high in G-rank. Also a set that could give me artillery king. I don't really care for earplugs since the Gunlance's shield is just fine.
One thing you didn't show is that you can tack a shell onto the lunge in attack.
Forward + X -> hit A while your running in = Boom
Also, you can do an infinite upward shell combo by starting with an upstab and repeatedly hitting A.
X + A -> A repeatedly.
That one is actually a really good quest complete gesture as well.
It's the monster hunter font.
Great tutorial there. Just a minor thing - there's a small typo in your intro: "Montser Hunter"
Bow and Hunting Horn tutorial would also be nice :)
How do i shoot charge shots
A question about what happens AFTER Wyvern Fire. I have noticed that to expose the coil in the gunlance, some gunlances LENGTHEN. Examples are the Qurupeco Gunlance and the Lagiacrus Gunlance. My question is this: Is the lengthening merely cosmetic, or does it affect the actual hitbox of the weapon?
That's how I've been using the different shell gunlances thus far in my game. Always try for full burst with normal, add charged shots into the combo with wide and just stab stab shot x3 for long shells, and it's worked out very well. I use alot of shells when gunlancing and don't use alot of the "lance part" but I still get good times. What do you think though Shepard? Should I take your advice of using just the lance for my slim higher sharpness and then use shells after?
shepard, where is that pic in the beginning from?
besides of that, thats a really awesome and comprehensive guide you made there :)
I'm not sure. I haven't gotten to G rank yet, but I'm going to guess the same. The stats seem to carry over and get increased with armor sets, so it's likely the same. You'll have to find out for yourself :P
Rhenoplos set is good early on because it has the artillery skill
Hey shepard what would be a good low rank sns armour set not counting lagiacrus
also awesome video
So, the best type for the skill Artillery King is wide, to boost the "massive" raw-damage of the (charged) shots?
I'm using the skill Artillery King + the Dire Miralis-gunlance and it is quite impressive how fast I can destroy monster parts.
Normal is the best for monsters with fire weakness (fire burst) and long is the balanced once to extend your stab-combos with normal shots, right?
Great vid
It suddenly occured to me that this question is better asked in the ASK A HUNTER page of club teamwork. Feel free to answer my question there instead.
