The place is called Old Airport Road because that area used to be Singapore's very first civil airport, Kallang Airport, from 1937 to 1955. This is way before when Changi Airport first opened in 1981.
@@riptide101Dude why so worked up? certain cultures associate slurping noodles as a sign of how delicious the food is or it’s just how they eat. Read: Korea/China.
Loved your interaction with the people at the hawker centres! how friendly and proud of their food they are. wholesome video i loved this. made me so hungry!
Typical soya beancurd stalls will sell soya bean milk, chilled grass jelly and grass jelly drink as well. Some of these stalls freshly make the soya beancurd themselves, using Calcium Sulfate (gypsum) as the coagulant. Such stalls serve the beancurd hot or at room temperature with sugar syrup. Sugar syrup is added before the soya bean milk. Soya bean milk can be served with ice (not recommended because it is very diluted) or warm (highly recommended because it is just the right temperature). Grass jelly and its drink are served chilled. I would highly recommend those stalls selling both soya bean milk and grass jelly drink, like the one at 18:14.
History of the Old Airport Road Hawker:- One of the draws to the Old Airport Road Food Centre in Singapore is that it’s a historic attraction in itself! The complex was built in 1972 as a home for the hundreds of street venders outside the closed down Kallang Airport. An estate was built with low-cost housing in 1955 on the old airport grounds and this is where the hawker stalls would congregate. It wasn’t until the Hawker Centre movement in the 1970’s where the new building was constructed that you see today. Old Airport Road Food Centre now consists of over 160 food stalls! It’s history and number of different food options from around Southeast Asia make it one of the oldest and largest hawker centres in Singapore. There is also a shopping area on the 2nd floor with miscellaneous stores and items. Sugarcane Juice:- Sugarcane juice is the liquid extracted from pressed sugarcane. It is consumed as a beverage in many places, especially where sugarcane is commercially grown, such as Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, North Africa, and Latin America. Sugarcane juice is obtained by crushing peeled sugar cane in a mill and is one of the main precursors of rum. Char Kway Teow:- Char kway teow (sometimes also spelled as char kuey teow, Chinese: 炒粿條; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: chhá-kóe-tiâu) is a stir-fried rice noodle dish from Maritime Southeast Asia of southern Chinese origin. In Hokkien and Teochew, char means 'stir-fried' and kway teow refers to flat rice noodles. It is made from flat rice noodles (Chinese: 河粉; pinyin: hé fěn; Cantonese Yale: hó fán) or kway teow (Chinese: 粿條; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: kóe-tiâu; pinyin: guǒ tiáo; Cantonese Yale: gwó tìuh) of approximately 1 cm or about 0.5 cm in width, stir-fried over very high heat with garlic, light and dark soy sauce, chilli paste, whole prawns, shelled blood cockles, chopped Chinese chives, slices of Chinese sausage, and bean sprouts. Other common ingredients include fishcake and belachan. Hainanese Chicken Rice:- Hainanese chicken rice is a dish of poached chicken and seasoned rice, served with chilli sauce and usually with cucumber garnishes. It was created by immigrants from Hainan in southern China and adapted from the Hainanese dish Wenchang chicken. It is considered one of the national dishes of Singapore and is most commonly associated with Singaporean cuisine, being widely available in most food courts and hawker centres around the country. Variants of the dish can also be seen throughout Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia and Thailand, where it remains a culinary staple. Soya Bean Curd:- Tofu, also called bean curd, soft, relatively flavourless food product made from soybeans. Tofu is an important source of protein in the cuisines of China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Bean curd, also known as tofu, is made out of soybeans that have been soaked, ground, and pressed into a tender block of protein. Bean curd is nearly tasteless by itself, but it soaks up the flavors that it is cooked with to create tasty dishes that have a variety of textures. Soya Bean Benefits:- •Good source of protein. •Lower in saturated fat as compared to meat. •Lactose free and hence people who are lactose intolerant can consume it without any undesirable symptoms (e.g. diarrhoea). •Good source of calcium. •A source of isoflavones, which is an antioxidant that may be beneficial for the body.
Singaporean here. Absolutely love my hainanese chicken rice. And yes, on some days I mix the black sauce and chilli sauce into the rice (cooked from chicken broth, sesame oil and a bunch of other ingredients giving it its fragrance), which elevates it into another level of flavour. On some days, I leave out the black sauce. But the chilli sauce, ALWAYS.
Love how Karolina describes the sugar cane drink with “taste like sugar” 😂 I’m already waiting for more videos to follow your exciting journey 🤩⭐️ you both rock!
Haha yeah 😂 Sometimes really when there are a lot of different flavours but there's a ton of sugar added it overpowers the other tastes and it's hard to describe the first taste impression!
The point of chicken rice is the rice. The chicken is boiled with ginger garlic and spring onions and then the rice is made with the resulting broth and fat. I’m simplifying but that’s generally it. You should try the rice by itself too. You can also ask for extra rice when you order.
Exactly. It's chicken rice and not "chicken with rice", the rice is the star of the dish. Also you can usually get a set with bok choi or kailan, which is my preference.
Proud of you both. You did not fall for those tourist traps… like eating the overrated chicken rice in Maxwell Food Centre, etc etc. That char kway teow: I knew that it would be spicy although you said ‘Less chilli’. It happened to me ( an elderly local). I found it too spicy although I stressed that I want very very little chilli. So during my future visits I said ‘ No chilli’. Anyway, my favourite char kway teow stall is somewhere else
Hi Mandy! We want to immerse ourselves in Southeast Asia and the customs of the locals, so trying to avoid typical tourist attractions! However, it may not always be possible. 🌶️ It's so true that even if we say less spicy, it still has a kick 🤪
The tissue paper seller is actually them needing money but if you want or need tissue paper, you can get it or if you wanna donate your money to the tissue seller, you can actually just give her $1 :) a few more hawker Centers i recommend will be the people’s park (hawker) Center, Maxwell food Center, Whampoa makan(eating) Center (has a $9 chicken rice with 2 plates of rice, 2 plates of white chicken 2 bowls of soup and tou fu)and Lau Pa Sat (Lau pa sat is famous for its stay!)
Wow, such good tips! Thank you! We could have seen that buying some tissues is a way of supporting those people 🤗 It's such a nice way to do such small things that might mean a lot to them!
For $4 Hainanese Chicken Rice, I must say that's A LOT of chicken meat given!! Chicken Rice is available at almost every hawker centres, but not for Char Kway Teow, (meaning fried rice noodles) so most people will prefer to go for the Char Kway Teow unless they have a preference for rice. The white version of Char Kway Teow is less common and not many places have that option, usually is the black (sweet sauce) version available. The beancurb stall is a legendary one cos it sparked off a chain of franchiese stalls about a decade ago, all started from this flagship stall at Old Airport Road (there was an airport nearby last time and this road was thus known as Airport Road). And yes, the queue for that Michelin-star Char Kway Teow stall (name: Lao Fu Zi which is a cartoon-character created by Hong Kong cartoonist) can be ridiculously long during peak hours.

The Char Kuay Teow you should try the black one with chili. Hainanese chicken rice is correct, chili and dark sauce together with the chicken meat and rice. Besides the bean curd, you should try the Chendol too. Normally when we drink freshly squeezed sugar cane juice, we don't add anymore sugar instead I like to add a piece of lemon.

It is hot in Singapore. Another way to enjoy Sugar Cane Juice is ask to add a little lemon to it. A mix of sweetness with sourness, taste super...that quench your thirst!!🤗🤗
The tissue thing is just use to get your seats as if you go to a crowded places, if you don't chope your seats with the tissue, you won't have seats to eat in the end and you will be holding your hot food without a table.
I mean those that says that is because they forgotten to get their seats and they are sour about it. I mean think about it, I guess you did see that usually these food centres that have people who does that comes in groups. They can easily get one of their friends to take care of the table. That is technically right to ask someone to guard the table and seats. The tissue just replace the person so that he or she could buy their food too. It represents the same thing even though it doesn't seems like it.
My neighborhood more than a decade ago. Char Kway Teow is my favorite. Wondering if #10 Dakota Crescent is still there. Nevertheless, will go back there next year. 😊
aaah i miss hawker center in Singapore! hainan chicken rice!! yum!! ❤ anyway beancurd in Singapore served cold meanwhile in Indonesia served warm with ginger brown sugar soup ^^ and i love the herbal jelly (guilinggao) in Singapore 😁
Hainanese Chicken Rice was my favourite dish and even throughout our travels I'm having it quite regularly hehe 😋 [Karolina] Jay loves all sorts of the Beancurd though lol
Soya bean curd is good for skin too :) if you are in chinatown complex, do try the Ah Balling Peanut Soup desserts. It's good. Some foreign expats from Europe and Asutralia live at the opposite condominiums facing the old airport road hawker centre . Sometimes they will buy takeaway after work or dine in.

IKR. Idk how the young seller is so bad at explaining. And the cockles keep say clams. I think the light one is msia version? First time seeing light version. Usually is carrot cake with black white choice.
@JayeshChhaya actually u should try the malay food here too coz it's different in some ways tho..and...in a way, it will help others to know that Singapore has other Asian race too. A lot of foreigners often mistaken Singapore to be part of China. Vloggers definitely could help to clarify that if the other races are featured too.. just my 2 cents.. all the best tho..
You can customise the sugarcane drink to your own preference, although you will have to pay more. Customisations include no ice, add lemon, add preserved sour plum. I would personally go for no ice and add lemon because the lemon helps to balance the sweetness and mask the grassy taste from the sugarcane. For the Char Kway Teow dish, the clams that the female stall assistant mentioned are actually blood cockles. Blood Cockles are an essential ingredient in Char Kway Teow. I believe there are people who even request for additional cockles. There are Char Kway Teow stalls that still use Pork Lard, so the Char Kway Teow dish will contain a few pieces of the Crispy Pork Lard as proof. The bits of ingredient that you were unsure of is actually scrambled eggs. Eggs are cooked first before the other ingredients. Cockles are the last to go in. For Singapore Hainanese Chicken Rice, there will always be a bowl of soup provided for each plate of chicken rice served. The difference in price of $4 or $5 can also be from the choice of chicken parts, with the breast meat being the cheapest at $4 while the thigh and/or drumstick meat is the most expensive at $5.
Cost of food has increased drastically even in food courts. It is a rare occurrence to come across stalls that are selling a dish under $3.50. Extremely unbearable to be dining out for cheap food like we could a little over 2-3 years ago.
Putting tissue or anything down to reserve (chop) seat is perfectly alright here. Noone will comment that action is selfish especially during peak hours.
@@JayandKarolina Thats the idea of reserving seats during peak hours... it has been an unwritten culture here for 4 decades... one of the uniqueness of Singapore. And noone ever commented or complain. I guess those who said that are new Singaporean.
Using tissue to chop seat is only happened in recent decade.. we used to chop seat with our personal thing like pagers, bags, wallets etc during our olden days. Tertiary students will chopped seats using their laptop, tablets in the campus.
Actually the correct way of eating the chivken rice is to mix all the sauce together. And since both of you are eating it. You should get half of the chicken. Your gf is not copying what you said. Every Hainan chicken rice lovers says the samething. You should buy all the foods at one shot instead buying them after you finished them to prevent from long queue.
Wherever we go, we look for the longest queue because it means that the food is good 😂 And then we do our research if it’s actually worth it or not haha so we were not surprised!
Yes actually you are right, we do mix the sauces with the rice! For the char kway teow, you should order the black one which the locals like it more. Good choice to explore the local hawker centres without the tourists! Really appreciate that you have nice reviews on SG!!
too much of the sauce. not meant to dip it in. but rather, scoop a little and mix with the chicken and rice and wat together with the chili.. all sauces should only be in little portions.
Thanks for the tip! We actually had a hard time judging how much sauce we should add to make the taste authentic, so we didn't always get it perfect haha
People will stare cuz ure holding a camera not so much of being a foreigner. Older folks are just more curious of people talking to their cameras in general 😂
well.... it is where "cane sugar" comes from xD You need to try the real traditional Soy Bean Curd. The store you visited is more like a pudding than the traditional bean curd. I like mine served with soy bean milk instead of sugar syrup.
There is no rule when jt comes to eating so lonh as you both enjoy it.. and yes mixing the rice with black sauce is one great way to 'makan' (makan is malay for eating)

Wow, that sounds interesting!
You can find similar in Indonesia. Look for avacado coffee... 😉
Oh wow! Thank you very much for the valuable instructions - they will be useful for the future (and for our viewers) 🙏🏽
Old airport Road Hawker Centre is not the cheapest. In fact the prices are quite high by hawker standards. But the food is generally nice.
True! Everything was really delicious!
Omg . Yes the food ❤
Cost of food has increased drastically even in food courts. It is a rare occurrence to come across stalls that are selling a dish under $3.50. Extremely unbearable to be dining out for cheap food like we could a little over 2-3 years ago.
It's a pity that those times are behind us ☹️ But we are still trying to choose tasty food for less money!
Char Kuay Teow we locals often ask for extra dark (black soya sauce) & extra chilli..haha
It would compliment the dish for sure well!
Putting tissue or anything down to reserve (chop) seat is perfectly alright here. Noone will comment that action is selfish especially during peak hours.
Oh, really?? We were told by some of the Singaporean people that definitely we should avoid doing it since it’s not respectable 😅
Tertiary students will chopped seats using their laptop, tablets in the campus.
yea mix the black suace!! its good that way :D
Word to all tourist, always order the non-spicy, no chilli version first
: ) .
That’s a great tip haha
😂😂😂
Ikr.... As a local i dont even eat most of the dishes with chilli. Even my chicken rice also just a little dip nia.
"I think we cracked it guys; you're supposed to mix it" Haha!
Haha did we actually crack it though? That is the question 😂
@@JayandKarolina: It's an option. Even some locals do just that. There's no one strict way to do it.

This is making me so hungryy 🥲
🤭 We’re missing the Singapore Hawker centres so much!
Sugar is from sugar cane 😊 so this is original sugar, not processed sugar
Indeed!
New subscriber here, nice change from delivery 😊😊😊
Thanks and welcome!
A bit expensive but it's worth the taste... Yummy licious foods.
There's no right way to eat the chix rice
Some mixed with the sauce and some takes the meat to dip it to eat.
Amyway welcome to Singapore!
YNWA
That's great to know! Thank you for explaining it!
Business for Hainanese chicken rice stall is good. They are closing stall early. 😂
Wherever we go, we look for the longest queue because it means that the food is good 😂 And then we do our research if it’s actually worth it or not haha so we were not surprised!
Did y’all manage to catch the nightlife scene?
Yes we did! We loved strolling around the city which was lit up and obviously the Gardens by the Bay night show 🌃🎆
Yes actually you are right, we do mix the sauces with the rice!
For the char kway teow, you should order the black one which the locals like it more.
Good choice to explore the local hawker centres without the tourists!
Really appreciate that you have nice reviews on SG!!
We love to explore places beloved by the locals 😍 Already looking forward to our return visit!
Sugar cane juice = sweet grass drink.
Go maxwell hawker centre for Tian Tian chicken rice you will love it for sure 😊
Thanks for the tip! We'll definitely have it on the list for next time visit!!!
That was actually cockles, not clams...😂
😅
Oh gosh, the food are very nice...
Hahaha. U squeeze and the juice is come out behind.
too much of the sauce. not meant to dip it in. but rather, scoop a little and mix with the chicken and rice and wat together with the chili..
all sauces should only be in little portions.
Thanks for the tip! We actually had a hard time judging how much sauce we should add to make the taste authentic, so we didn't always get it perfect haha
It’s not clam. It’s cockle.
😂😅
Good Polandia..
Should have bought the fish noodles
I'm not the biggest fun of fish haha
You must have done some homework before you went! Well done 👍❤
People will stare cuz ure holding a camera not so much of being a foreigner. Older folks are just more curious of people talking to their cameras in general 😂
That's true! But we didn't feel as if its anything bad - most of the time people in SG were smiling to us which was nice 😊
Sugarcane is basically a type of overgrown grass!
Overgrown grass tastes delicious!
well.... it is where "cane sugar" comes from xD You need to try the real traditional Soy Bean Curd. The store you visited is more like a pudding than the traditional bean curd. I like mine served with soy bean milk instead of sugar syrup.
I’ve just had the Soya Beancurd drink yesterday from the iconic Kim Soya Bean stall in KL 🥳
There is no one way to enjoy chicken rice lol.
😬
❤👍
i ususally do it the way u do, ur supposed to mix the chilli sauce and rice and eat it with the chicken,
Not really cheap
Is unhealthy if u eat often..
Which food or drink are you referring to?
HELLO JAYESH❤
CAN YOU HELP ME THAT I CAN COME AND LIVE IN SINGAPORE PLEASE?🙏🏻🫣
I don’t live in Singapore 😅
Say Siemka to Karolina
Siemaaaaa 😎
A lot of sugar in drinks??
Wow hope you never see American drinks get made!!
Especially soda
That’s so true 🤪
Are you that deliveroo guy ?
They call me Gig Hustle 😎
you heard about Hainan chicken earlier but didn't attempt to learn anything about it?
There's so many things that we need to educate ourselves before going to a specific country. We cannot be experts in everything 😂
There is no rule when jt comes to eating so lonh as you both enjoy it.. and yes mixing the rice with black sauce is one great way to 'makan' (makan is malay for eating)
😬🙌🏽
This chicken rice stall is my fav
