- There was a recent news piece about Florida children with disabilities being placed in nursing homes :( What a horrible situation! We don't want that for any child. Parents and self advocates must know their rights, and they must apply for the Waiver in order to help make a difference. In this video, we take you through the application process step by step, which could be SUPER TRICKY otherwise, and why many people just give up.
Don't give up, you can do it!
Fabulous video. Thank you so much. Should have done this 10 yrs ago. This stuff is so complicated and yet you broke it down nicely.
You are such a lifesaver for posting this. Thank you!!!
Thank you soo much for this video. I have two children with disabilities that are including in these list of elegible diagnosis and yet have been trying for over a year to get my children into the waiting list and the regional office never answers the phone. This video finally helped me find the application. thank you.
OH good, glad it helped. It's so confusing :(
It would e wonderful if this was accurate. I did all this BEFORE my son was 5. We included 3 Ieps, slp notes, an md ASD diagnosis, and then Apd decided to send my son out for testing as they still questioned with mountains of paperwork. So he got an asd 3 aka severe, diagnosis. Apd said they did not recognize Dr. Zacky’s report, he was the dr. APD sent me to. Also the waiver program representative in Florida (Palm beach) told me that there is a 13 year wait list. My son was denied the waitlist and I was going to appeal but became so depressed by the actions of APD tho the point that I became physically sick and it was impossible for me to appeal as I couldn’t handle any more stress from this… this is our experience/our reality. Apd also changed from ASD to ASD 3 and must meet *every criteria In the legislation, however even if you provide notes on this from MDs you can be denied. This is our reality. I hope this can be an educational for you to understand our reality.
Yes, APD is a challenge but it is possible to be placed on the waitlist and they are taking more off the waitlist recently who are in crisis. If there's no crisis, then yes, it's a 15 year waitlist. Straight Medicaid (not the waiver) covers speech, OT, ABA, etc without a waitlist and is based on income.
Very helpful information, thank you for making this video because a lot of people are not familiar with this program or the process.
It is the best and most helpful video I have seen in UA-cam. Very lucky to find this video ❤😊
Trying to apply for my children great information
Thank you this was so helpful. 🙏😃
Could you please link the website in the description box??? My son has Spina Bifida and we are having a hard time with this. ❤
Once approved for APD program and crisis waiver enrollment, if you don't mind sharing, how did you go about selecting a Waiver Support Coordinator and who do you recommend in the Southeast region?
Once approved, you will get a list of WSCs, but you'll need to interview a few or ask people you know for a referral.
Does my adult son needs to have medicaid ?
He got accepted for crisis but when I applied he had medicade now he has Medicare only .
Is that an issue?
I have paperwork to choose coordinator
If he gets social security income, then he should get Medicaid automatically
Is applying for APD the same as applying for Medicaid waiver? Or is this two different applications?
This is all new for me, and I hope this helps. In my own experience, once my child was approved for apd program, additional information was submitted and sent for crisis review. Once I received a letter stating he was determined to meet crisis criteria and that recommendation has been made for enrollment, now I have to select a waiver support coordinator to manage my childs needs.
These are my current steps and can provide an update as I continue with the process.
Sorry for the delay. Just catching up. Yes, APD is the entity that handles the Medicaid Waiver - which is not straight Medicaid for health insurance coverage
My sister has an acquired brain injury as of two years ago and she is 41. The APD excludes her to my understanding because she doesn’t have a developmental disability she was born with…. So how can I get her services at a group home if she does not have a born with disability?
She has Medicaid already.
APD Is for dev. and intellectual disabilities. Check with the hospital social worker where she had gone for the TBI. They would be able to offer resources.
Why is there a waitlist at all? What is the issue?
Also, if I’m already on a waiver program in another state will I have to wait?
@@MistyMiller-lo7xm No, waivers don't transfer state to state. Several states have waitlists. It's an every growing population and the state funding can't keep up.
