Wouldn't have guessed this band would FIT THE BILL for an RFI episode but hey THATS ON YOU DUDE
Good variety on this channel.
@MrAaronbathory Absolutely
One funny thing I remember about them is that when Trae tha Truth sampled them in "I'm Fresh" and fans were asking if they're planning to sue him for royalties, the band was like nah we got too many uncleared movie samples all over our albums.
Barbarian has been a staple of my gym playlists for almost half of my life at this point and will continue to be. Instant PR maker.
Dopethrone changed my musical life, and I still listen to it constantly - it is likely the most played album in my entire collection. Come My Fanatics and Dopethrone are certainly their two best, but I wish you had also covered the Supercoven EP - it's fantastic. We Live had their best production and a HUGE sound, and though there are some tracks that are too long and not interesting enough to be so, the title track, We Live - is one of the best E-Wiz songs. When that riff hits right after the "yeah - the living dead again" sample, it's a giant sledgehammer. Jus Osborn is a God at writing riffs, taking a fairly simple idea and tweaking it with a bend, or a little slide - and turning it into magic. Would love to see you cover more stoner doom, and what about some classic sludge bands? Eyehategod, Grief, Noothgrush, Iron Monkey? Keep up the good work.
Great summation. I also love “Let Us Prey” for more of a f***ked up twisted psychedelic angle, but yeah Dopethrone is one of heaviest, most evil albums ever created. I hate most things labeled “Stoner Doom”, but Dopethrone may be one of the only albums where that description is apt. “We Live” is criminally underrated. I love every track. You’re dead on about the sledgehammer when the title track kicks in! The way he phrases the vocal lines along with the riff makes me wanna punch a hole through my windshield when I’m listening in my car. So nasty. Not a huge fan of where the music has gone since then, but I still check out the later albums now and then.
The J dawg moments are pure gold. One of the best bands ever 🤘
Holy hell, I didn't expect that band from you, but that's a nice surprise ❤. And yeah their samples are so bonkers.
Pentagram's Lightning in a Bottle is pretty solid offering. "Lady Heroin" shows that Bobby is diversifying his vices.
Oh believe me I already ordered it. Pretty much all Pentagram is good stuff.
Man the self titled is just beautiful gold as well
"Higher and higher through the cosmos we had tripped
seeing stars turned inside out we thought our minds had flipped
colours swirling, sounds a drifting, thinking we were dead
the wizard turned and spoke to us and this is what he said..."
That is the best start to a guitar solo EVER
Let Us Prey is peak Wizard.
This band was favorite for 10 years. Can't find nothing else like them. I hope they come back with some new material.
Supposedly there is a new album coming out this year.
The last one was probably their worst so it will be interesting to see what they have come up with regardless.
Try YOB & CONAN. They share some elements / vibes
Yeah that first Conan EP, Horseback Battle Hammer, gives off the closest vibe to Dopethrone while still being its own original thing that I've ever heard, especially on the song "Satsumo."
@ yeah and somehow they managed to sound HEAVIER than almost anything on that EP. While sounding so organic & analog. Totally blew me away. Which makes me hope that ONE DAY you make a CORRUPTED episode…
I do like Corrupted but I have to listen to them more to familiarize myself with all their material. I've got the same thing going on with Mordor from Switzerland.
The riff off the title track on Dopethrone is one of the dankest riffs I’ve ever heard. Really stoked to see you cover The Wizard!
A SEED OF HATE FROM THE DAY I WAS BORN
WE HATE YOU
luv electric wizard. they sound like how I feel when I wake up
Amen to everything you said about the Wizard. They were my teenage angst band, discovering them changed everything for me regarding heavy or extreme music. "Let Us Prey" was their swansong to something very special with a very special record. I still enjoyed "We Live" and "Witchcult Today", but afterwards they turned into Justin, his hot Girlfriend & the Random Dudes. I do not feel the magic anymore. Maybe he became to happy? Tim Bagshaw and Mark Greening did some cool stuff after the split, especially Ramesses is worth getting into.
gay the og lineup is OVERRATED
@@danse777macabre Not in my universe.
I didn’t see it… I walked IN on it.
Awesome video as always. Let’s get a uncle acid and the deadbeats video 🙏🏻
New RFI let’s go baby
Probably the only stoner doom band I properly enjoy. Dopethrone spoke to me deeply when I was 13-14 and hated the world and I still find love it.
BTW, if you take recs, I think doing an episode on Sacramentary Abolishment/Axis of Advance would be cool. It's war metal at its core but they mix a lot of super technical, progressive and melodic features as well; their first album as Axis of Advance, "Strike" from 2001 was a sci-fi concept album with some tracks surpassing 8 minutes, and with only two tracks below 5 minutes. It is good shit.
The EP Supercoven is also a great addition to their sound, if you’re able to find a copy of it. I find the space rock elements on that EP to be the most interesting, building well into those extreme doom riffs.
i fuckin love Let Us Prey. really glad you included it. i would say it's their darkest, most hallucinatory record. i think it's a bit of a return to their style on Come My Fanatics. it has that thicker atmosphere and looser feel to it. less song-orientated than Dopethrone. i read in an interview at the time that they wrote a lot of that album in the studio, and it feels like it, in the best possible way. feels like three guys in a room, getting high and jamming like fuck. i love that.
Hell yeah new RFI day
I read about Electric Wizard in Metal Maniacs in 2001 when I was jail, around 18 years old, I couldn't wait to get out and listen to it and it was my fucking album for a long time. Holy shit the explosion of 00s stoner/doom/hipster/octopus tattoo bands really killed it for me, but that album has a special history with me.
I listen to them regularly they've never made a bad album
Been YEEEEARS since I've jammed the EW... Come my fanatics and dopethrone were among the first vinyl records I ever bought. Really dug witchcult today and black masses as well. You've convinced me to dust off the ol' bong and take a little nostalgia trip with the Wizard.
Hell yeah, great video. Early EW is untouchable. People didn’t like Let Us Prey??? Ughhh. That album rules. Twisted, evil and dark psychedelic music.
Come My Fanatics changed my life
My most listened to band by miles. Rocked up 7k last fm scribbles when i was a teen one year aha
(Me and a mate did the math and it only just works out really 😂 fucking hell yes, easily some of my favourite metal ever)
Witchcult today, come my fanatics, we live.. let us prey..
All absolutely stellar albums, dopethrone and the self titled are great too sure
But fcking come my fanatics, witchcult today and we live are totally outstanding
Back to back on repeat all night long for months on end at times
I dont smoke these days which is a shame because some of my best teen memories were getting absolutely smashed, puffing on bongs and listening to wizard at unbearable volumes watching shit horror and reading lovecraft
goated band
I always thought of Electric Wizard to be more of a heroin addicts band rather than a stoner band.
Speaking of early Nile albums: I never outgrew them, but I wish that Karl Sanders didn't feel like he outgrew them. Ever since Dallas took his skullet with him they haven't been the same.
Yeah I'm pretty much strictly an Amongst the Catacombs through In Their Darkened Shrines guy. George is definitely a sick drummer though.
@@radiofreeinnsmouth1337Shrines might be their peak for me.
Kinda has the best mix of atmosphere, brutality, and epic all together.
Annihilation of the Wicked is probably my favorite, because it's the first album of theirs that I listened to and was my intro to tech / brutal death metal, but it's hard to go wrong with any of their first 3 albums.
@@BigChimpEnergy I do think Annihilation of the Wicked is great. Probably their last great album.
Albums like Dopethrone showed me how nihilistic and hateful 'stoner' doom metal can be. Its the same with sludge, the best examples are just dripping with hatred
I had no idea these guys were still around, I used to listen to them quite a bit I think the last album I heard from them was Black Masses.
Also have you considered doing a video on Endless Dismal Moan? Some of the best Japanese black metal imo it really captures the sound of Japanese horror along with a visual kei aesthetic I think it'd be an interesting video.
Endless Dismal Moan is pretty great stuff, especially on the demo comp and Lord of Nightmare. I'll probably hit them up for a video some day but I have to listen to Ruin and especially Curse of Underground more.
Once again you’re spot on. GREAT episode for a « Fantastic » band indeed. Excellent analysis. Discovered them with DOPETHRONE in 2005 and was instantly hooked. Funny they have that « hipster » label while they are such genuine metalheads
You should check out Ancestors off of youth attack records. Hipster BM for sure but it’s pretty unique and interesting.
thx for blessing us king 🙏
Realonlineboy drops, restecp.
KING COBRA THE SEXY GOTH BAD BOY
To me Electric Wizard has always been a bit like potato chips. Superb when someone offers it, but not so good when I get it myself.
Black sabbath is the best doom band, Electric funeral funeral.
Could you do an Episode on Drudkh?
Have you ever considered doing a Neurosis episode?
Maybe some day, I was big on Through Silver in Blood when I was a kid but it's been a while.
I am not that into the first two albums, but pretty much everything from Soul At Zero through to Given To The Rising is great. That's a lot of good stuff.
The 70s heavy psych and krautrock influence along with experimentation makes their sound. The lack of that stuff is why some of the “stoner metal” bands are boring and flat to me despite their heaviness and good riffs. E.W. is one of the few to pull off that sound perfectly.
Ramesses is more interesting than post break-up Wizard imo
Vagtazo Halottkemek episode one day?
i love you jiub
YOOOOO
