    I see a lot of people complaining on Reddit and various UA-cam videos about the release of a new Gen 4. However, it's the only way for a company to move forward and improve a product. I view this release as an update that addresses the weaknesses of Gen 3. I'm quite happy that they released it. I really like CYC.

    • @baconbuttties
      @baconbuttties  6 місяців тому +1

      I agree, it's the best way to move forward if there are issues with Gen 3, although sending a replacement Gen 3 which is known to have issues has left people like me feeling like i have thrown a £1000 away.

    My x1 gen 4 died after 15 miles of hard riding. I had a 72v battery. The motor controller actually died and killed the throttle as well. But my wife has a 52v x1 pro with 300 miles on it so far and it’s working great. She does not push it like I did. I don’t think the x6 and gen 3 were designed for 72v high amp setups. I have an x12 and ds103 on the way and hopefully the motor is okay and just the controller went kaboom. I’ll update with the results when parts arrive.

      Update 1: Installed the x12 controller and the motor will not spin without a bit of a turn while applying throttle. When it is spinning rpm is low and the motor feels more like a diesel engine than electric. So more than likely a magnet is cracked or a hall effect sensor burn up when the old controller died. Emailed electrify bike (cyc us partner) to get a replacement. Will update when new motor arrives.

      @@recklessthor4 Yes, the warranty motor did not arrive yet but I went ahead and ordered the gen 4 motor and gearbox through CYC directly. Sadly it seems like the 72v electrifybike sharkpak battery had also bit the bullet when the controller blew. So the saga continues. I may order the new style 72v battery from electrify bike. It has been one thing after another with this conversion kit but sunken cost and I go hand in hand so not giving up yet.

    Just picked up a CYC X1 GEN 3 in early November and mounted it on my Trek Farley 5 fat tire bike. I use both pedal assist and some throttle too. Not so much a top speed junky I really like trail riding this bike on the local MTB trails which are very steep in my area. 47 miles in the controller died while pulling away from a stop at a very light load. Dead shorted, I looked down when it quit and the battery connector was glowing red! Luckily I could easily unplug it before anything else was damaged. Running a Electrify Bike Co. 52 volt 20AH shark pack and it survived the ordeal. I bought a new controller and am back in business but the unit cuts out under load when things get bumpy on the trail or street. CYC did warranty the controller so I have another backup but hope I don’t need it. I really wanted to step up to 72 volts but am worried if 52 volts killed the last controller there is probably no way it will handle 72 volts. Would like to try the gen 4 on another bike of mine but may wait awhile to see how well it works out in general population before I try one out. Love the power of the current setup but not sure how long the drivetrain will handle it.

    Hope the gen 4 really solves their issues. Reliability really has been their Achilles heel. But I'm apt to believe that they're probably going to continue to be prone to magnet separation until they switch to IPM, sleeved design, or otherwise provide an interference fit for the magnet.
    Currently run a BBSHD on mine. Ate a controller around 1500 miles. Currently pushing 10k on the unit across 2 different frames. Flashed the open source firmware on it a while ago. The thing's been a gem of reliability. I pop the thing apart once or twice a year, clean, re-grease, and re-seal. Those motors are awesome, though the waterproofing isn't the best. I've not had any issues with mine, but I try real hard to stay ahead of it because I knew that going in. I keep waiting for something to wear out internally but it hasn't happened yet.
    Shoot... I'm low-key hoping this controller dies. Gives me an excuse to throw an ASI external on there. But at the same time, I'm also not because that's a spendy thing.
    I'll also give an honorable mention to the shimano LG700 cassettes and hope pro 5 ebike hubs. Those things are *sturdy.* I'm not particularly gentle on my components. Not intentionally abusive, to be clear. But I run them hard. 52v battery, 33 amp current, 300-350lbs of self+bike+cargo. Those things handle it just dandy.

    I have my X1 program 3 using it with 52 volt battery close to 800 mi I have no problem with, but I'm using it on Trek Marlin 6 is 31 lbs bike, and it doesn't have, probably that was the issue on your bike, and I'm using gear 7 out of 11 because it's too much torque on, because if the chain broke and jam the motor that's what's going to happen, my only complaint is that when they bring the Gen 3 they said it's going to be compatible with 5000w and the weather honest, they never give us the option to get x12 to purchase, so now with the gen4 upgrade kit now you forced to get the motor and the x12, because it's going to be too much power on the gen 3 motor to handle , I wish that cyc listen to us and give us a discount price for gen 3 owners.

And I've had no issues one motor is over 200 mi and the other one I think is at like 70 or 80 and both are working amazing.😊 Definitely looks like people that are pushing the controllers to the max are having the issues with their motors overheating and that's probably why I haven't had any significant temperature spikes

Is this constant upping of power it’s kind of getting ridiculous. We are now at the point of breaking chains at nothing ripping drive chains apart at that much torque and that much wattage. I would rather see all of these companies, making more reliable more efficient motors they can give us better mileage at good torque and good wattage than giving us monster power that’s going to break easily because this is just like cars the bigger the motor and the more you ramp up the power the more things are going to break.😊

    Midrive motor are no good at all they haven't been good when first one came on the market I bought one had it 6month poof the best motor and I've had quite alot is rear drive motor for power reliability and performance. The only problem is the rear tyres it eats them. But it's the way you drive the bike in the first place. I bought 750wat Fat Tyre snow bike amazon. I've upgrade to 1500wat 35amp controller 48volt 20amp battery that battery came with the bike. Now I'm getting 40amp controller and I've got spare 52v 20 amp battery so I no for a fact it will do over 40mph. To change from 750wat to 1500wat wharf a difference in how smooth the bike is power when you need it. Fat tyre bike are OK it's the seat is to low for peddling so I've heighten the seat using pvc added 3uns now I can peddle. I'm hoig to ues tubeles tyres for punchers it's the best way to fix a puncher when your out you can do this at road side cause you need to carry inflater. Simple plug and glue and I'm riding bike home not walking or get a taxi. Why u think midrive motor pack in its because it to close to peddles the power from legs peddling is a strain on the motor that's my theory coud be wrong. The problem with CYC is not whether it gives power or not, the problem is that CYC engines break down well with 3000w or 5000w, and I think that the gen 4 is still the same engine, with the only difference that the engine is a 25% longer, but the motor magnets are still stuck with glue and anchored to the motor covers, just like the gen 3, and the CYC people say that they have redesigned the motor, I don't believe them, the gen 4 is the same engine garbage as the gen 3
