I love this! It's Julie Andrews , what is there not to love! This is one of the great song & dance that is not in the movie! Both broadway & movie were smash hits!
who reads these comments? Anyway looking back at this now, I think we didn't appreciate just how Immaculate the spectacle of this particular number really was. The costumes, the set design, the lighting. Somebody commented here or elsewhere that because Victor Victoria was up against some big contenders the year that it premiered, it didn't get its due, and that may be right. But again, 20 years later, and as somebody who never got to see the Broadway show, I keep coming back to this number and just marvelling at how well-timed and enjoyable it really is. It's not the greatest number, it's certainly not the greatest song, but it is traditional ostentatious Broadway camp. And I love it
P. Murray I always appreciate every single Julie Andrews’ performance , her artistry & talent , this particular is spectacular to watch 20 years & something later. Production & presentation were both extraordinary & exceptional. If it were not for Julie’s tragic vocal loss , Victor Victoria would have had a long successful run like her MFL, Camelot & The Boyfriend
It's wonderful to see this Act 2 opener of VV. Watch Julie being lifted into the air all the time. As my friend whispered to me when this was happening, "Watch out, boys, you're lifting a million dollars. Don't drop her." When Julie left the show for a brief while and Liza took over, they cut Louie Seize and I believe they substituted something else for her. When Julie came back, she cut it also - in favor of a BALOON ACT. Maybe Julie's throat problems were beginning and she just had to do a little less show each night. (A friend of mine who was in SWEET CHARITY told me that on matinee days Gwen Verdon would sometimes cut WHERE AM I GOING.) I felt so bad for the audiences who were being denied this great Rob Marshall number. I saw this show three times - and had I been indiscriminately rich I would have seen it 100 times. I was so with Julie when she turned down the TONY nomination. The fact that Rachel York didn't even get a best support actress nod was ridiculous. It didn't even get a scenery nomination!
I think this version of Victor Victoria is far far better than the movie. The movie I find kind of depressing. This I find has more energy and good spirit. Julie Andrews was right back where she belonged when this show opened. So sad her lovely voice is gone. Very sad indeed. But at least she's keeping her head high and moving on. That's the important thing.
@TheCherryBomber1: no my dad distinctly remembers it was Julie Andrews. I just asked him, and he knew right of the bat... but I still can't believe they did it.
The songs added from the movie's score were atrocious but Julie Andrews showed why she is a legend from the first time you see her on stage until the curtain came down. She was pure magic.
It's a pity she can't sing as well as she used to be, just remember the good old days from "The Sound of Music". I've seen the clip with Liza as well. But you know, no one else comes close when you match with Julie Andrews. Besides her singing, it's her charm that counts.

Julie hated the number. She had issues with a lot of the lyrics in the new numbers
