  • People play games for all types of reasons, and many of them seem to sort into a few different but distinct groups. Let’s have some fun and identify, describe and lovingly critique the different types of gamers out there!

Great topic to talk about. As somebody, who is very open minded in life (not just media consumption), I find this topic fascinating.
On the topic of videogames. Like you said, games are expensive and they are time consuming. So everybody should enjoy what they enjoy with their given time. But trying new games, genres and just in general new experiences can be so refreshing. As a kid and teenager I despised RPG's and Shmups. Now as an adult I discovered them for myself and highly enjoy them.
Also the thing you said about Zelda and TLOU fans can also be said for some Souls fans. I heard fans of that series say, that souls games were so good, that it ruined video games for them. Elitism can be an awful thing.

This was a great discussion piece. I think you hit pretty much every type of gamer out there. I myself am sort of an odd type of gamer. I was born in 1984 so I am blessed that I got to experience gaming from the Nes til now. Even experienced a bit of the early Atari stuff. These days I don’t play too much unless it is with my son, my wife, my neighbor, or a friend. I get really passionate and enjoy gaming with someone there to play with in the same room. I don’t care for online gaming at all. My neighbor saw my collection last September and he told me how much he loved the Metroid series. At the time, I had only beaten Super Metroid. We played that and then went through the entire series and finished it two weeks ago. We played the Original Metroid on the Analogue Nt Noir, Metroid 2 on the Gamecube Gba Player using the Hori Gba pad, Super Metroid on the Snes, Metroid Zero Mission on the Gamecube Gba player as well as Metroid Fusion. We played the entire Wii Prime Trilogy with the Wii disc on my Wii U. We played the Other M disc on the Wii U and then played Metroid Prime Hunters from the Wii U E shop. Finally, we played Dread. This was an amazing experience and I absolutely love the series now and have my neighbor to thank for being the inspiration and motivator to play though the series. Made me realize I had amazing experiences just sitting there the whole time. After we finished two weeks ago, he suggested we do Fire Emblem next. We just started the first one on Gba last week. I have never played through any of the games in this series either and am very much looking forward to as I am having a great time playing the original currently. I look forward to sharing my collection with my son, my family, friends, and neighbor moving forward and don’t discriminate against systems all that much. I currently have a Halo edition Original Xbox, the Star Wars Xbox 360, an original PS1, the Slim PS2, the Fat original 80gig PS3, the original PS4 Pro, the Nes, the Snes, the N64, the Gamecube, the Black Wii U, the Switch, a Sega Master System model 1, a Model 1 Genny/model 1 sega cd/32x tower of power, a model 1 Sega Saturn, the Sega Sports black Dreamcast, a Philips Cdi 220 model, the FZ-1 Panasonic 3DO, an Atari Jaguar/Jaguar Cd combo, a U.S Neo Geo Aes, and a Turbo duo. I also have some interesting things such as the Analogue NT Noir, the Super NT which I use for imports, and finally a Mega Sg hooked into a Model 2 sega Cd. I also keep the two Genesis Minis, the Snes Classic, and Nes classic at my parents house for easy fun family gaming there. My game room has four screens for an arcade style atmosphere. A VGA monitor for my Dreamcast. Two crts for the analogue systems and a Led tv for the hd ones. The Led tv is on a vertical mount for tate mode for shmups and I have all my analogue systems plugged into 2 G comp switches using HD Retrovision Component cables including the N64 and Turbo duo which I had modded for use with them. I use S Video for the 3DO and Cdi, and composite for the Nes. All in all, I am crazy but I have a passion for this stuff but enjoy it ten fold when I am playing games with someone else in person like we did as kids back in the day and teens and even in high school and early college. Good time. Cheers Mike and keep up the great content!

We are kindred spirits my friend! I love sharing my collection with people in the same room as well, and rarely play games online. I do play fighting games online occasionally, but it’ll never be close to playing with a friend in the same room.
Lovely collection, and I also love what Analouge has done. I have a Mega SG and recently, finally got the Pocket and LOVE IT. I usually go through a new series yearly. A few years ago it was Yakuza, this year was the Souls series, and now I’m circling the Xenoblade games for 2023.

God, there are so many types of gamers I don't like. We have the ones who only like AAA games and hates everything that isn't AAA. The indies only gamers, the "Eastern Games Good. Western Games Bad" types and vice versa. Who cares if the game is AAA, indie, Eastern, Western, or whatever. As long as it's good, does it matter?

@@ChipDamageMike going hand in hand with this, the worst type of gamer is a rare one but one that imo does active damage to the medium/fanbase: the one who thinks games are and should only be mindless fun, and turns up their nose at anyone who sees gaming as what it is: an artistic medium. They go hand in hand with the cutscene skippers. I think it boils down to them being embarrassed that this is their hobby. Which is sad. Here’s to actually enjoying video games. Merry christmas. 🎮🎁

I like to play games of all genres, if I don’t play a genre or certain game, is because I tried it or something similar and I already know i don’t like.
I do understand that someone can like, for example, cod or sports games only, but not that they trash other games or treat badly other gamers for not being the same… Games are for fun. So have fun with your games, and let people have fun with theirs.

As a nintendo fan I can add more the types of nintendo fans
N64 and under only fan: the younger brother of the Snes and under only fan
The Mario and Zelda only Fan: They are a weird mixture of the most casual and most hard-core nintendo fans. The casuals only play mario and Zelda because they are nintendos most recognizable IP. The hard-core will say that they respect nintendos (out of obligation more like it) other IPs, but will not branch out to them and nintendos entire year is judged solely on if there is a good Zelda and mario game released. Every other IP is irrelevant, regardless how it has done.
The handheld fans: were some of the most casual nintendo fans out there but the majority of their gaming time spent was strictly on nintendos handheld consoles. It's not uncommon for the Switch to be their first home consoles for obvious reasons and a lot of them tend be pokemon fans.

As Palpatine would say, "A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one!"
Hey Mike, this video was a nice and interesting change from your normal videos. And really funny! Rarely have you expressed your own opinion so strongly. And I like it!
We gamers are strange people, instead of just enjoying our hobby we always have to be in an eternal competition of different groups and constantly measure our cocks to prove who is the best here. Pc vs console, Sony vs Microsoft, Nintendo vs the rest of the world...
I think it's human nature to take sides and defend that side no matter what. After all, no one wants to stand alone or admit that he or she made a mistake. But all the fanboys probably don't realize how much they make themselves look ridiculous in the end. Fanboys, the worst kind of nerds...just play what you want, have fun, move on! Beeing aggressively fanatical about a game is kinda embarrassing.
    - Beeing loyal to a company is pretty weird to me, too. Sure, if a company has released good games for years and shaped my childhood as a result, then you have a strong connection to that company. However, that doesn't mean they can treat you like shit for the next 10 years. Companys want to make money! They want your money. That`s it! Stop glorifying them.
You want my hard earned money Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo? Then respect me and don't treat me like a toddler. We're not stupid!
    - To swear eternal loyalty to a brand is more understandable, but you should still have enough character to denounce the negative aspects of a game and have the balls to dislike a game. Yes, you are allowed to not like a game that everybody else loves. No Zelda title is perfect, no Halo title is perfect and yes, even Sony makes a lot of mistakes! Deal with it and move on. It is not the end of the world. Stop pretending that every game your favorit company makes is a 10 out of 10 miracle! No game can cure cancer, so stop with the exaggerated praises. The last of us is great. Okay, cool. And now move on with your life and do something useful. ;)
    - I understand why people like to play on the hardest difficulty. I understand why people like to play Souls like games. But that doesn't mean they have to criticize people who like to play on easy. Not everyone has time to grind for hours these days. Get off your high horse. You don't belong to an elite club, even if you think so yourself. Playing through a game on extreme is an achievement, that's true. You have my respect. And now move on with your life.
    - I'm also suspicious of players who only play a certain game or genre. Isn't that a bit boring? There is so much more to this medium than just the one genre you love. You're missing out on so many good things. That goes for everything else too....if I only listen to a certain type of music, or only watch one genre of films, or only deal with fantasy books...then I'm constantly in my "comfort zone" which is just boring and sad. I don't understand people like that. (yes, nothing bad will happen if you watch a movie that is 60 years old and in black and white... you might even learn something from it... omg who would have thought!)
I now approach games like this: I either play a game that actually interests me or a game that can be found on various top 100 lists. Why? Because as a "gamer" I want to understand why certain games keep popping up on these lists and I it is my duty to give these games a chance. Whether or not I like the genre or the franchise, but it's important to me that I've played it at least once. It dosnt matter if the game is 30 years old, in 2D or 3D or can only be played on PC or console....the main thing is that it's fun! Trying out games that were before my time or that I just missed at the time can be a fun experience and I like the historical aspect behind it.
If I've committed myself to a hobby, then I should also be willing to deal with things that initially don't interest me. right?
I beat "Broken Sword" on my Wii yesterday, now i'm playing "Disco Elysium" on PC, "Mass Effect 1" on 360 and "Thalos Principle" on PS4! Oh, and I'm fighting my way through "Mario Bros 3" on the Nes. :)....too much games, so little time.
What i'm trying to say is...just play what you want but don't be afraid to try out new games because there are just too many cool games out there waiting to be discovered...oh, and stop beeing a fanboy, thats just childish.
    :)
Great video Mike! Had a lot of fun watching it. Take care and happy holidays!

      @ChipDamageMike  Рік тому +1

Thank you so much for another thoughtful comment! You make a lot of good points. And you seem to be a kindred spirit, jumping around between consoles, games and eras, because they're all good! But there's just so little time to play!
No one can play everything, but if you're lucky enough to have the time and money to play many games, it's always great to try new things and experiment, it's such an enriching experience. Trying to avoid the fanboyism and tune out all the "noise" is integral as well, like you said.
Thank you for your kind words and insight! And as always thank you for watching!

As long as we're dishing out some (friendly) shade, I feel like we have to bring up JRPG fanatics. Love me some JRPGs, RPGs in general are my favorite gaming genre along with platformers. However, the JRPG die-hards are just next level with how obsessive and defensive they can be. I know JRPGs are often an "underdog" genre, as they often don't get the respect they deserve mainstream, but if I even mention how I think SMT 3: Nocturne isn't really that great of a game to me when compared to others on the PS2 or that JRPGs can learn a thing for two for Western RPGs, I am public enemy #1.
And I swear, some JRPGs fanatics do NOT play anything else. They eat, breathe and sleep these games and throw shade at other genres. Like I said, love me the genre as well, but man, you guys give Last Of Us fans a run for their money sometimes.

    • @ChipDamageMike
      @ChipDamageMike  Рік тому +1

O for sure. It's so odd that, indeed, JRPGs are somewhat of an underdog genre now, as there was time, I'd say from 1994 to about 2007, where they were kind of the head liners of the industry.
And the fans can be...as bad as some of the worst types of anime fans lol . Caring more about character ships than the actual story of the game, or fawning over the sexy characters to the point of embarrassment. Given, I believe the reason people gravitate to this genre until this day is the creativity these games present, something rarely found found in big budget western rpgs. However, western games have a technical proficiency that is not often found in eastern games. Only a select few on both sides have been able to do the perfect fusion dance and make something truly special.
As always, thank you for watching and commenting!

My all time favorite games are Ico, Shadow of The Colossus, and Devil May Cry 1, so not really sure where that places me 😂. For reference DMC1 was my 7th bday gift/my first game. I was really into nintendo and sony growing up. Bungie's Halo has always been the extent of my interest in the xb line, even more so from ps3 onwards since everything inherently just became cross platform. Now I more or less gravitate to Nintendo (mainly because the other two just do sloppy seconds with each other by making clone series) and dabble into sony when something entirely new comes out. Honestly I'm just finding myself becoming indifferent to games 😕.
