What an awesome performance of this very catchy old song and while listening to this my mind sent me back to a time of Flappers, vamp girls, gangsters, art deco and far far better times than we have now. I could totally see myself dressed in a Smooth criminal outfit, dancing with Lady Mary from Downton Abby in a London club to this performance.
A wonderful scenario you’ve imagined there! In the days when we played at the Savoy, the Ritz and the Cafe De Paris, you could easily have reenacted it! Sadly, these venues are either closed, refurbished, or don’t have events like that anymore.
what a wonderful performance of a really good old tune and while I was listening to this I was not in my room but in my mind I was at the big dancehall in Thirsk, dancing with Anna who had come from Downton Abbey to go on a date with me.OH and Mr Bates never arrived at Downton Abby but got run over by the train on his way to his meating with Lord Grantham. LOL!
What pathetic applause for that brilliant re-creation! The pulsating spirit of the 20s gets one's feet helplessly doing the Charleston. The bandleader had a wonderfully sympathetic vocal style; wish I could hear him slightly better. Hoped it would go on and on, but... BIG STANDING OVATION AND REQUEST FOR AN ENCORE OF THE SAME! x
It's possible that the audio recording signal was taken direct from the microphone(s) in which case the only audience applause that would be picked up would be the sound of applause that the microphone could actually pick up.
Thank you! Your comments are much appreciated. Nowadays when we perform this one, I sing the verse and some additional lyrics at the end. Quite an outrageous song for the time, I guess. Michael
What a great idea! I may reconsider our staging of this number (assuming that I can find suitable attire!!), I now sing additional lyrics when we perform this song, including: "You go in to give your girl a kiss in the hall, but instead you find you're kissing her brother, Paul"). Thanks, Michael
Just out of interest was this played from a stock arrangement or copying a recording? It sounds very similar to the recording by the Savoy Havana Jazz Band. Great performance though. I do love the piece. Very peppy
We used the printed stock arrangement. I listened to the 1926 Savoy Havana Band recording and we played the same cuts as they did. I also added an extra (part) vocal chorus at the end for this performance. I now sing some different lyrics for the end section: "You go in to give your girl a kiss in the hall, But instead you find you're kissing her brother Paul. Ma has a sweater up to her chin, Pa has a girdle holding him in - Those masculine women and feminine men."
@@PiccDan Great to hear. I did think it sounded similar. Do you know where I could find the same arrangement? I would certainly be interested to have a look.
I listen to the original version of this great song when I remember. Now I discovered this new one. This is also cool. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for your comments. It is indeed a catchy tune!
Right up Tiny Tim’s alley!
Thank you!
For whatever reason, I kept waiting for the woman to get up and sing, and then to be revealed as a guy.
Great idea!
