    Man, it is such a privilege to watch a healthy, happy couple talk about their real life marriage with the ups and downs and budget priorities and “having opinions now.” 😂

    • @rubyoro0
      @rubyoro0 5 років тому +4

      Betty Huey Dollar tree has petunia seed packets for a quarter and after season they are ten cents. There is probably about 300 seeds in packets. If you have special petunias that have been bred then only cuttings will give you true mother plants. In saving seeds I have read...to put a little party favor sack and let the flower mature so seeds stay in sack.

    It's so interesting to hear you talk about getting energy from hard labor. I am exactly the same way. In fact during my job interview at a local nursery I stated that I am a manual laborer extraordinaire! I've received a number of compliments at work about being such a great, hard worker. At 70, I think that's saying something!! Hard labor is good for your physical, and emotional health.

      To mswyman- just turned 71 an am redoing most of my garden beds. Just put in a Bloomerang and will be planting 2 Little Lime hydrangeas as soon as the contractor gets my front steps and sidewalk done. With the new sidewalk I'll have another 2 feet to plant on that side and might widen the other side a bit.

    L & A, I wish more couples would acknowledge and accept the need for hiring help with indoor house keeping chores rather than let it be a struggle between them. Your answers of budgeting for the help both inside and outside so everyone can enjoy time for joyful activities is very wise! Thank you both!

      Vacation is time off doing what you enjoy. It does not have to be on a beach , getting in a plane, or seeing bright city lights. You two are wise and sincere with your life’s purpose. You budget for the things you enjoy, which is your home and garden. If I had a garden and home like yours, it would be a vacation to sit in your gazebo or around your fire pit and absorb the beauty and peace. Having such peace is so joyful and allows you to renew and feel re -energized. You two are down to earth , salt of the earth people. I love that about you and are great examples of what parents should be. Benjamin is fortunate to have you as parents. You are a great team! God Bless!

    I liked the gardening on a budget question because that's how I got my start. Many years ago a neighbor was dividing her German Bearded Iris and passed her rhizomes along to me and told me how to plant them and how to care for them. The rest is history. Perhaps a video on "Pass along" plants would be helpful for your viewers on a tight budget. Many perennials need to be divided every 3-5 years to promote more blooms. Examples are daylilies and all varieties of Iris. I like to divide a few of my prized Hosta in the Spring and put the cuttings in containers on my East side Front Porch. I hope this info is helpful for the beginner gardener.

    • @kellylaliberte548
      @kellylaliberte548 5 років тому +2

      My mother took some hosta splits from her parents' cottage when they sold it, and years later gave me a few plants when she split hers. Mine are overdue to be split but I missed the window when they were small enough to lift this spring. I love them--they're beautiful and bring back memories of summer at the cottage.

    The app is a fantastic idea. The game changer would be adding the budgeting cost into in. Meaning now that you have designed your garden, here is range of what it could cost depending on the size of plant you purchase. Oooh also adding sizes you purchase and maybe a look at what it will look like when you plant that size and then maybe somehow do a month later view. That ide has ALOT of potential!!! Totally worthy of a discussion with proven winners I think. Of course my dream is to somehow build and own a full proven winners retail nursery in my area!!! 😀😀 because I can never find very many proven winners plants in any of the garden centers near me.

      I love, love your ideas for the app ! You described it very well. I was looking for something similar to help me with my garden but all i could find were logiciels to buy that needed a computer to work because smartphones are not powerfull enough. My computer is too old and doesn't work anymore so....
      What is the biggest city next to you ? I thought Proven winners had a LOT of garden centers troughout the US... 🤔
      When i found ONE plant from proven winners in my garden center downtown i was super excited because i never see them, here, in France 😣

    Also, on the budget question. Save during the winter & ask for cash or gift cards for birthdays and holidays, this way you can play more in spring. Another tip regarding budget, put your money into your foundation pieces first, trees and perennials. It's ok if it takes years to fully fill in your gardens. I'm on year 3 and have learned a ton but the best thing I'm learning is foundation pieces first.

    I'm looking at 60 next month and while the drive is still there, I have slowed down a bit. I continue to spend hours upon hours outside puttering in my garden and landscaping and have even added a few raised vegetable beds this year. I am happiest with my hands in dirt. This winter, I put my landscape and garden plans on paper so I know for certain what's planted where. I was looking at nothing but an overgrown canvas when I moved in to this house five years ago and have learned so much since finding your channel last spring. YAAAAAAS! I'm so glad you mentioned you have a little help with chores inside the house!
    I've been struggling with this myself for the 2 years we've had Our little Benjamin and just can't keep up with all the house work, my job, AND being able to be out in the garden, and spending as much play and education time as I'd like with Benjamin. I actually paid someone to come in and clean my bathrooms and mop my floors after Benjamin was born, and it was GLORIOOOOOUS!
    If not on a regular basis, I think I'll do that once in a while when I feel things are getting away from me. Especially since my husband hates doing housework too.🤣
    Thank you for being real about this, in a way it kind of mentally "gave me permission" to do it more for myself, and makes me realize that it's ok that I can't do it all, all the time. I deserve a break somewhere!!!
    Thank you to you and your family for being such a wholesome example of good clean everyday happiness, creating beauty all around you!

    Loved this video! My husband and I garden about 2 acres as well and every year we share plants from our garden with family and friends, sometimes we just set the extras out by the street and people pick them up (so hard to just throw them in the woods). We are both retired and never take a vacation (maybe a day trip), what can be better than enjoying what we have here at home, so beautiful and therapeutic! 🌺🌼🌸

    Your videos are the first thing I watch in the morning while I'm drinking my coffee. They inspire me every day to get out and get my hands dirty. I was looking at my patio yesterday and was blown away by how prolific the petunias were. I've never grown them before (for some reason my mom hates them, so I guess I had filed that away in my brain and just never planted them before). But this year, I planted only about five of them in various pots, but WOW! an explosion of color! I'm in zone 9b and I think I've been watering and feeding my plants based on not great advice in the past -- since watching your channel, my watering and feeding (especially feeding) routine is much more constant and that shows in every plant I have -- much stronger and healthier plants and so many more blooms! Again, thank you for the advice and inspiration -- can't wait for the next video!

    I totally agree with your answer, Laura, about passion and energy. I have a nursery and large garden areas. It can be daunting, all the work that needs to be done. I'm often overwhelmed but my passion for growing plants and nurturing them gets me out the door. I have to say that when I start to feel less than excited to get out and work, all I need to do is watch your videos! That does it EVERY time!

    I think Laura's explanation of what events transpired for them to loose (Molly?) the dog was appropriate & conscientious of her audience. It was insensitive & ugly for Aaron to reprimand her for giving details other than they dropped her on a farm. I got a little example of what Laura must go through at home on a regular basis. I feel for her; she looks like she struggles with having so much information that she wants to benevolently get out to the public about gardening and I know she answers every little question that I come up with. I've always had a million questions about everything and desperately wanted to know every detail of anything I'm studying. I wish I had someone like her in my family and if I did I would show her gratitude and respect. Laura your benevolent for slowing down in your garden and making gardening easier for the rest of us instead of just making us jealous. We love you immensely.

    I thought Winger's sounded familiar... My husband and I ate there when we passed through on vacation from Denver 2 summers ago. It was yummy, but the highlights were a visit to Andrews Seed Co. (and meeting your lovely mom) and seeing your big and beautiful Ontario containers!

    On the budget garden starting front: see if there's a local garden club and join. Many have plant sales, some do seed giveaways, and all will have fellow gardeners who you can network with and possibly gets starts from. (Bonus: many also have guest speakers at the meetings. I've learned a ton about xeriscaping, year-round veggie harvests, native plants and how to get rid of invasives, etc.)
    At my garden club, every meeting has a table at the back for plant sales with proceeds going to the club, for example one of our members was thinning out an overgrown strawberry patch and I got a bunch of baby strawberry plants at 50 cents each. We also host an annual plant sale that usually has a ton of plants for very reasonable prices, and there are often members giving away vegetable and flower seeds or who are flat out giving away plants because their irises spread so much and they only want to keep half or whatever.

    Oh WoW! Enjoyed this so much. Love seeing Russell, hearing what Benjamin loves and is doing. A thumbs up on the app. Think about how it would help people on any size of budget and include where to plant sun loving or shade plants.

    I agree with spending money to beautify your home and garden. I always thought it was strange that people would have vacation homes or cabins. I figured why not make your actual home feel like it is your vacation home, your escape. When I do travel I miss my garden, my home, and especially my comfy bed. Also Aaron, I am with you on the sunglasses. Sunlight, even when not directly in it, hurts my eyes. I have sunglasses everywhere. My grandma wore a poker visor even in the house lol

    Discovered your videos a week ago, and absolutely love them! I use to work in a greenhouse years ago, and really miss doing that, and have just now gotten back into gardening after being away from it for a year or so. I love your gardens and have pulled several ideas from your videos, and enjoy having my coffee with your videos in the morning.

    Wow, Laura, we have the same favourite food/drink, the same perspective on shows/movies and up until March we had the same cat. 😳😄 I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to spend some time with Russell in this video, even if he hid his face the whole time :) My kitty boy passed away earlier this year, he was almost 20 years old, and looked exactly like Russell. I miss him so much but I am so grateful to have had him in my life. I was wondering about Molly too, and laughed at how Russell reacted, what a protective, guard cat he is! I did the same thing, only I brought my puppy in when he was smaller than my cat, and credit to my cat (who was 12 at the time and really chilled out) he was lovely to the dog. But my dog is an Australian Cattle Dog and he was a cat botherer from day 1. Still, they became best pals, with the cat always being above the dog in the hierarchy, as that is the only way. So I’m sorry things didn’t work out between Russell and Molly, but I’m really glad Russell is happy again and that you found such a wonderful home for Molly as well. Things just work out that way sometimes, maybe in a few years you’ll find a way to bring a dog into your home and Russell will be if not happy than perhaps ok about it. In time they do tend to bond. Thank you for lovely videos, what an amazing content you two are creating, I’m so glad I found your channel. And I’m really sorry about your hostas. But as you say, they’re only plants! And they will recover xx

    Re: MULCH. I use ~3” of woodchips. See Paul Gautachi, Back to Eden Garden. Get FREE from a tree service company (woodchips w leaves). I’m not talking about bark. It looks like the Forest floor. They do a bunch of things like keep the soil temperature down, suppress weeds, feeds your garden as it decomposes, etc etc. Lay on top, do NOT mix into the soil.

    I love your program. The interaction between the two of you is priceless. Funniest I have ever say was when you found your weeping willow trimmed back so he could mow easier. That problem is universal. My husband is not allowed to trim anything unless I am press it if it that way we get along better. Your programs mean a lot to me. I am visually impaired and so my life is rather sedentary. But I can see your programs on on my iPad Pro thank you Gloria Culver

    Laura and Aaron, I just want to say - Thank you. Your videos have not only inspired me to start gardening at my own home, but also have done so much more. I deal with a decent amount of anxiety and stress in my life, and i look forward to coming home, making a cup of tea and watching your videos. From planting, to garden tours, to Christmas tree decorating - I find your videos to relaxing, real and calming. You are both unapologetically yourselves and I thank you for sharing this part of your lives with us. I've been a subscriber for years, before you moved into this home, and I will be a subscriber for years to come. I feel like you are both part of my circle of family/friends and I feel like I know you. Anyways, I hope to meet you both some day to express my gratitude and thanks in person. Keep being you, and sharing your videos with the world. All the best, and love in the world to you both, Benjamin, and the cats. --- Erik xoxo
