I use onion powder, garlic powder, tumeric, oregano, ginger, rosemary, pink Himalayan salt, black pepper, thyme, paprika and my daughters grilled chicken with avocado oil or olive oil to help with her cerebral palsy. To help with her inflammation.
Hello! What you said about "toasting" the spices it is truth. My grandmother noticed the difference in the taste of the food when the garlic, oregano and salt were not light fried in oil. We called it "sofreír" in Spanish, and let me tell you, it does make a difference in the smell, taste and even the presentation of the dish. Thanks for sharing all this information!
I'm a South Indian and we love our spices and use them extensively in almost every single meal. Yet I stopped by this video because it is so calming to just watch your videos and there's a fresh perspective to every single topic you speak about 😊
Same here. I have and use a whole bunch of spices as a South Indian married to North Indian but came here to listen to Sadia's calming voice and explanations. Always love learning why we do what we do. Like why do we use cumin first with oil and cumin powder later in the dish. Great video Sadia, thank you.
For my fellow colorblind friends, you can use apps on your phone to help identify colors, including brightness, of spices to visually check for freshness. I've used apps like this for years to check on dried parsley, basil, oregano, and thyme. Check the color when fresh, and then you can periodically check in to ensure freshness. Smell is usually my go-to for freshness, but you can also have the same benefit as our color-seeing friends with just a little help from technology.
Just when I thought your videos could not get any better... The quality of the shots (and of the advices) and the overall aesthetic of your content are just breathtaking. ❤
Another reason to follow PUL's advice and shop at your local Asian market is that spices are MUCH cheaper there. At grocery stores in the US, we are typically paying a lot for the cute little bottles that have a tiny amount of spice inside. At a nearby Indian market, I can buy peppercorns, cinnamon, cumin, turmeric, cashews, almonds, etc., for far less money than at my general-purpose grocery store.
Sadia, just want to say, you changed my spice game! Before Pick Up Limes I was a baker, I would cook sweet things all day long but my savoury dishes were simply uninteresting and flavourless.. I started buying and using spices while trying up your recipes and now I cannot live without them! Thank you so much :)
I have recently been living alone and learning new recipes. Spices pretty much overwhelm me because there's a lot of foreign names and I didn't know where to start. I found myself wishing for a guide of the flavor and uses of each. This came in a perfect time. Thank you so much. I've downloaded the printable and it's exactly what I needed!
Herbs and spices are GREAT for the microbiome, too! They are a great way to get additional microbiome-food into your diet when you're still struggling to incorporate fruits and veggies (this is commonly a problem for those with IBS or SIBO). Not to mention adding more flavor can jazz up an otherwise boring or restricted diet. Great and beautiful video- keep up the great work! 🥰
This is honestly one of my favorite things about your food videos: you dive deep into subjects. I like it so much more when you actually go over the details and share quality information , not just share a tasty yet somehow less detailed recipe.I love the science, the evidence as well as your artsy approach and always soothing. Btw, I like the new animations a lot. Your content just makes me happy! Thank you Sadia and your team
When I was a college student just starting to cook for myself and working with a tight budget, I'd save up to buy a new spice jar once a month or so. Back in those days, I used to love looking at my spice rack and using it as the base and inspiration for whatever I'd cook rather than being driven my larger ingredients. I came up with some interesting combinations that I still love today about 10 years later. So glad the Pick Up Limes team gets this and is spreading the word cause I often find not enough people explore spices as they should. Cinnamon is certainly my #3 spice after salt and pepper too.
After watching almost every video, I've tried my first vegan dish today.Your recipes are easy, such a treat for families...I'm genuinely looking at vegan.spices, brilliant.
Thank you for choosing one of our recipes as your first foray into plant-based cooking. I hope that this is just the beginning of your plant-based journey, and that you continue to enjoy experimenting with different recipes and flavors. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need any more guidance or inspiration along the way! 🥰 🌱
Speechless in front of this magnificent introduction! To the persons who have filmed and edited this video with these new visual tools: you've made my heart beat with joy during the entire video ❤️✨ Passion for the craft 😌
Sadia, I have thoroughly loved the content you and your team has created over the past years but I would want to applaud you guys this time on the food photography and how you have captured the close shots. It was mind-blowing and definitely next level. You guys are doing such an amazing work. Thanks for sharing with us.
I watched the video twice just looking at the footage and creative details in the video, then realised everyone in comments talk about it, its truly amazing work of art
I just read an article the other day wherein it doesn't matter organic, country or spice - in the states, consumer reports just put this out "Your Herbs and Spices Might Contain Arsenic, Cadmium, and Lead" and gave a whole list of grocery stores and brands that are toxic. So, off to the garden I go, planting herbs and will store them by fall - just more work for the consumers
I used to hate cooking, but watching your videos has helped me so much!! You have fulfilled me with passion! I love your creativity and practicality! Thank you from Colombia 🇨🇴
I legit JUST went to your page and watched a few videos yesterday because I was missing your content!!! thank you for this SUPER HELPFUL guideeee!!! love your content so much
I love spices and this video. Very inspiring. I can see you doing a whole series on spices, highlighting their properties and showing one or two recipes along with tidbits about proper storage.
That intro b-roll is giving Chefs Table vibes in the best way possible!!! Excellent video overall, and I learned something new, even after cooking for 20 years! Lol
Hey saida you are doing an awesome job. I am from India and your videos are a part of my relaxation me time. After I go to bed and want to give my mind and eyes a good relax I watch your videos. Truly your voice is quite calming .
Loved this video! I love spices and seeing you so encouraging makes my heart happy that other people will be inspired too. They really change your cooking experience and ultimately your family time. Lots of love from South Africa 💜🌍🍲
Unpopular practice: I actually use spices for years and years and I've never had throw them away! They do lose some nutrients and flavor, but they are still super aromatic, it's pointless to get rid of them if they didn't go bad. Give them a chance!
Totally agree. I do exactly the same. I even prefer to buy herbs in large packages rather than small ones, because it's cheaper and (therefore) I like to use them often.
In fact, I started introducing new spices to my food because of your videos. Curry, paprika, peppers were simply not used by my relatives, and now everyone has a small stock of spices.
I grew up on salt, pepper, ground oregano, coriander (fresh) and garlic (Dominican). Only after coming to live in Egypt at 25 did I ever try cumin and cardamon. I’m so curious to learn more about other spices. This video is awesome! ❤
Omg thank you for creating this. I learned so much about spices in less than 10min.Yay!🎉 plus I feel less intimidated about shopping, storing, and using various spices for my food. I couldn’t have agreed more cooking is like a painting. I get to be in the moment and just have fun! 👩🏻🍳🎨
As an Indian the most common spices in my kitchen are ground Tumeric, coriander, chilli, garam masala and Hing. Whole spices are also used in almost all indian recipes like cumin, cloves , cardamom, bay leaf, cinnamon. The list goes endless, but these are the once used almost daily basis.
Thanks for this video 🫶🏿 I’d love to see ALL the instruments you have for this kitchen haha I saw one measuring spoon and love it and then other kind and love it and then other hahaha how many sets do you own !? 👀 Also maybe a refresh of what gear do you still use the most Love your videos always 🙌🏿 you and your team are the best
An excellent video! This is so very important for beginning cooks and for those of us with decades of cooking. Everyone should watch and share this. Thank you for such excellent information Sadia.
Must say, the quality of your videos has always been amazing (you've inspired me to make food photography a work, you know), and you keep making it better and better! Not only visually, but I think this is one of the best videos about spices I've ever watched. I dare to say it was a little short, I could have watched a lot more of this 😂 congrats on the amazing work, PUL team!
It's so lovely to watch your videos. Belated congratulations on your wedding 💒. I made your almond brownie cookies and they turned out to be the best cookie I've ever made. Thank you so much. Love your recipes. With lots of love from Malaysia.
Whenever i see ur vdos, i just feel like i shud not even blink 😍bcse i may miss something, superrb Presentations, superb cinematography and ofcourse mouth watering food , bravoo to the whole team ✌🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻keep it up
Amazing footage! You are the most hard-working innovative and genuine author I ever came across. Thank you for inspiration- not only by the content, but also but that immense amount of work and effort and love behind it ❤
Hi! As an Italian I use spices on a daily bases. I have many but the ones that can't be missing in our kitchen are: oregano, basil (better if fresh), hot pepper, parsley,, rosmary, cinnamon and nutmeg
Thank you so much for another beautiful video, Sadia. The free download is brilliant - I'm really interested in the benefits of different herbs and spices and this is a great starting point to help with adding them to dishes. Thank you so much for creating this great content. My favourite is always the bloopers at the end though! God bless
Hey Sadia - fab presentation. A dear friend recently mixed together a Tunisian spice blend - awesome. I adore Cajun and Morrocan spices but the Tunisian blend seemed next level. She found the details in a book I had gifter her titled "The Spice Bible" which is published here in Australia but I am sure details will be found on-line. Hugs from Melbourne
WOW, this video is just sooo beautiful! Not only is cooking an art, but also the editing and footage of your videos! So cool, keep up the great work, looking forward to the next recipes 😍☺
Love this video. I am fortunate to have a local spice shop to use. I can buy smaller amounts of new to me spices , to see if I like them and also larger quantities of my favorites.
Thank you Sadia and the pick up limes team for the amazing video❤️I think it's definitely a help for many folks out there who just started their cooking journey😊
Thank you for the information on spices, and also for the printable guide. That's going to come in handy.. I'm excited to start using it. And thanks so much for posting links to the delicious looking meals that were featured. Now, I just have to decide which one to try first. 😉 One last thing, love the bloopers at the end. I look forward to them each time. Just something simple that puts a smile on my face. 😃

I do too, i just end up using more because the flavor does dull
I do that too! I still have coriander seeds I purchased like years ago and they're still aromatic.
The quality of this videos are just another level

Love the sound design at the start!

I love this kind of educational cooking videos! Thanks for sharing your knowledge :)
The #1 unexpected place to get really good ground mixed spices: TJ Maxx or Marshalls
