      Check out Welch Tuning Systems, they're a newer company also making modern rope tuned drums, except theirs is a single point system that tunes the top and bottom simultaneously and they're offering it on full kits!

    This is truly amazing, if it truly works, and is maintainable long term. However, what about TONE? What kind of shells will be available? Could you adapt this to a Supraphonic or BB? Will all of that tuning system hardware choke the resonance of the shell? To me, these are issues that are as important as the convenience and consistency offered by the technology. If the formula of technology + tone proves true, then this might be worth the asking price.

    • @twtobin941

      @@victortesla4198 Thanks Victor, you speak as if you might work for Dialtune? Yes, I looked at the website and discovered both initial models are 8-ply maple. I'm sure they sound great. But from the photos is seems that there is more hardware contacting the shell than most other drum lug designs. I also wonder how the interconnecting cabling between those lugs may also effectively damp the shell resonance. As I have not had the opportunity to try the product out, of course all of this is pure speculation.

    If they were to release a full kit with this system, it would make tuning drums for studio or gigs 10 billion times easier and save a huuuuuge amount of time! In studio, it can take days to tune, mic, and eq the drums, with a system like this, it’d take mere minutes!

    Like the WTS kits/snares. The main difference is that the WTS snare are free floating shells (with exception to the anchor point) and are deeper. From what I have heard, I prefer the WTS snares. But this is a great drum for sure.

  • @ndykman_pdx
    @ndykman_pdx 4 роки тому

    I do appreciate you advocating for live drum recordings, so forgive me, but as a drummer, this looks terrible. The absolute mass of all that hardware will just kill any resonance, despite all their efforts to isolation mount things. You might as well just muffle a much cheaper snare or use a trigger to drive samples. Also, that quick release hoop system seems like nothing but pain down the road in terms of rattle, dead spots and more. While they are using good shells (Keller), I question how much thought is put into the bearing edges and finish of those shells.
    For that price (1000 USD), you are way better off getting on getting two or three good mid range snares (say a Black Magic, a Tama S.L.P and so on) and have one for higher tuning/fast attack and one for lower tuning/slower attack. Get a drum key drill bit and a DrumDial and you'll be able to change heads in a very reasonable amount of time. I mean, this is more expensive than a Black Beauty snare.

  • @Centerpieceofmind
    @Centerpieceofmind 4 роки тому

    Cool concept, not worth $1,000, imo. They'd be better off selling it as just the hardware/conversion, where you could convert any snare/drum. I play a nickel plated brass, the drum he demoed doesn't have near the attack I would need.

    Good to learn things from a drummer. Counting would be one thing. Not wanting to upset the “amped” stringed instrument players, but I’ve seen many, many of them not be able to count beats or bars while they play. When trying to teach other musicians what they want played, they kind of mime it to everyone while staring blankly, expecting their minds to be read. It’s not all about “just feeling” it when you want people to play “your” way.
    As far as tuning goes, until recently, drummers didn’t have the convenience of tuning devices to help them. I wonder how many other musicians would cope using just their ears and more than six tuning pegs?!
    Worth considering... (Bracing for a beating)

    Hi Glenn, I've been watching your videos for a while and I've got something to tell you. We're trying to run a band, but due to our economic situation (being 16 is not easy lmao), it's more of a project than a band. My bandmate came with an idea to start Nirvana cover band, with me on vocals and guitar (besides my hair I don't look like Kurt and I can't sing). I instantly disagreed, because an idea of me covering the most covered band of all time for profit just made me sick. At the moment, my bandmate (best friend of mine btw) is extremely toxic and mad at me, just because I stood my ground. What should I do at this point?
    With love from Czechia, Vacek.

    • @drakonyanazkar
      @drakonyanazkar 4 роки тому +1

      If your bro is mad at you for that, he's very selfish. You're not even refusing playing with him, just the specific idea with which you're not comfortable. Having that said, I understand your friend's frustration and it's indeed one of the things that makes the age of 16 not easy: you guys give too much importance to everything. It's only natural, but try to keep that in check. Try to give it time, I don't know. Or just suggest something else. I once tried starting a Bluegrass project with friends and they all accepted, but no one moved their asses because they weren't as passionate about Bluegrass and Country as me. I got frustrated too, but I didn't get mad at them. We were all 20 and above already, though. Now I'm in a Hard Rock band with one of them and things are flying neat. Tell your friend to not spoil the good things just because he can't have one specific good thing he wants alone.

      Good things cost money to make and take time to become accessible to the mass market.
      It's a very smart innovation and you'd be ignoring salient facts to not think so. Tuning pegs have nothing keeping them in similar tension so there are so many ways to tune a drum poorly, but this narrows it down to two major variables. When comparing speed and accuracy, even a great drum tuner would struggle to tune up faster or tighter. This has applications from studios to newbies.
      The guy in the video is a great salesman, very professional.

      First of all, this thing sounds way better in person; it really is amazing. Good ol' whats-his-name told me they've been working on this one design for 5 years. Every time they tried a different shell material or shell thickness, they had to completely redesign the lugs and the pulley system. That's why they don't have metal shells yet, but theyre working on it. When they release a copper shell, I'll sell a kidney and buy it right away.

When I've worked with those groups, they are typically using kevlar heads and cranking the hell out of them to get that very high and super tight snare sound. This is so cool! I hope they make a brass version. Unless brass is too soft.

    Hey Glenn, check out WTS and Sleishman drums, they have amazing tuning systems plus there is NOTHING screwed on the shell, a 12" tom can sound like a 16" floor tom because it doesn't choke no matter how low or high you tune them.

      That is an excellent point. How much does all that hardware gadgetry affect the tone of the shell? I'm sure we will learn more soon.

    That reminds me of the single lug tuning arbiter did in the late 90s/early 00s. Very quick to change heads but replacing parts and manufacturing costs were a big problem. I can see the same thing happening here.
    You can get Drum Tune Pro on your phone and have your presets saved for your kit(s) for about £8. I swear by it.
    Obviously you need a drummer that changes their heads regularly and can tune their drums. As rare as a bassist that can walk upright I know!
    For recording get a Ludwig 400/402 and a few lug locks for the 7/8 and 4/5 o'clock position.

      Arbiter single lug tuning was a gimmick, never really worked (I had a set of Arbiter Flats at one point). Yes, lots of tuning tools out there, but all of them still require a substantial amount of time to get the head tuned. This Dialtune thing seems to be a huge time saver, if it works. Lug locks are great idea once the head settles (stops stretching). It would be excellent if this Dialtune system could be installed on an LM402, without affecting the tone/resonance. Me thinks not.

      @@twtobin941 I had a set of the Arbiter Maple AT. Changing heads and tuning was easier that the dialtune other than the bass drum which was a bit awkward. Definitely gimmicky!
      The Arbiter single tune kits came from the 70s, cool idea but it's trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist.
      I dread to think how much this dialtune thing is going to cost!
