- I believe that at $599 the new Dialtune snare is the best deal in the drum industry right now. In this video I'll explain and demonstrate why, and give you a rundown on what's new in this V2 model. If you've never heard of this drum, this is also a good place to start.
I started as a skeptic, but I've used this thing for years now and the best summary I can give is that it actually does what it advertises, which is remarkable.

In a studio setting, being able to swap heads and tunings that fast to try new tones would be so huge.

@@ColeParamore and now imagine a free floating version of that, that doesn't need holes in the shell. Like "hey wanna try another wood?", 10 seconds later, there you go.
I remember when I was at Thomann and the drums sales guy showed how Sonor controls the tone with just the way they are layering their wood. Same wood, same thickness, same hight, same diameter, only the directions of the wood grain changed, it was unbelievable. Such free floating version would allow you to test and compare that quickly.
Honestly live too, like between songs, changing tuning, and if the head breaks, you change it in 2 seconds, it's an absolutely amazing design for touring as well!
they need to make drum kits, this thing is totally awesome in the recording studio, I can pitch it to the song key so quickly, I am really hoping they come out with toms and kicks next
Its about time i worked on that idea 20 years ago.
Biggest differnce was the bottom head adjustment. It’s great to be able to tune that and hear a clear comparison between tight and loose and in between all while playing
As a touring drummer, I definitely want one. You can change the tuning during songs live which is a pretty big deal, and you can change the head very very fast. You could even use this in your solo!
Have used both the maple and brass version in the studio. Those hoops are fantastic for rim shots.
As a live sound engineer on the weekend, I can’t tell you how much time this would save me. Tuning drums before shows takes forever if they haven’t been tuned in a while. Every individual lug has to be adjusted. And changing the head takes forever tightening each screw back up. This is the future of drums 100%. They need to license this tech to all the major brands ASAP. In 10 years nobody will be tuning and servicing drums the old way anymore. I’m buying one of these right now.

These are going to be a must for every studio, quick head changes and tune up.
I've never known a reason to modify the bottom head, but the quick tuning of the drum I must admit is something I'm surprised I haven't seen sooner. A way to tune all the lugs easily with a dial on the drum. I've thought of it, but I'm not an engineer just auto mechanic/drummer. But I'm sure other drummers have thought the same. If this drum works, and it seems it does, great idea. I have never cared one way or another about the weight of any drum other than the bass drums really.
I had an Arbiter advanced tuning kit and loved it.

I have played the first version and the new. I most definitely noticed a difference . The old version I sold because I didn’t like sound of it or the articulation. I think the new version, at least the one I bought sounds incredible. What ever they changed is super noticeable to me. I think the snare wires sound crisp and articulate. It has tons of tone. Love it , even with the rather bland throw. It’s about sound at the end of the day to me.

I've been downsizing my snare collection, because gear acquisition syndrome was getting ridiculous. I decided to try to find a super snare that I would use for 90% of my purposes. After watching your breakdown of the brass version (or Sounds Like a Drum, IDR), I was immediately sold and pulled the trigger on it.
That was several months ago and my gear acquisition syndrome with snares has all but disappeared. Not only does it sound awesome, I can fine tune my sound for both sides of the snare like never before. Just being able to do that in real time has been MASSIVE for me in finding exactly how the heads interact with each other, and exactly what I wanted from them.
Aside from that, if I want to tweak the sound further, I just bought a stack of snare heads, from an Ambo to a P77, and dialing in on technique and dynamics has taken me the rest of the way. Unless I'd need a wacky sound like a piccolo or a 10", I haven't really felt the need to chase new drum shells.
TL;DR, these snare are no effin joke. Best $$$ I ever spent without a doubt.

Excellent demo Cole. The quick release alone, on that snare, can save at least 10 minutes on a head change. Lets face changing heads is a time consuming pain and anything we can do to reduce it is a plus.
I think that aspect alone should become standard on a lot of other snares and perhaps toms as well.
If Dialtone was able to put a patent on the quick release they struck gold.
Is the hoop itself die cast or is that irrelevent in the dialtone system.
Best absolute invention since sliced cheese. I'm a guitar player and if I was a drummer, this is the only snare I would buy.

Thanks for the great video! How long have you owned the Dialtune and have you had to change the cable tensioning wires yet? How long would you estimate they would last?
Thanks for the kind words! I've had the first version for a few years now. Estimating how long they'll last is honestly pretty tricky. The more you use the dial the sooner it'll have to be replaced, so for me, since I was filming all the time, they would wear quicker because I was constantly bringing it all the way down then all the way up. I also know that they've gone through several versions of the cable, and the newest is the strongest, so I'm not 100% sure what longevity is like. I would probably buy a replacement cable along with the snare and not worry too much about it. Hope that helps!

Not quite like either. Probably a little more like die cast, but more like Sonor S hoops.

I bought the Dialtune maple in Seaform (From Musicians Friend...They actually gave me a better deal than their parent Co GC... Go figure ?, So yes I got it for less than the $599 !😁) PS: I wouldn't have bought it you hadn't done several demo's on it Cole. Should be arriving tomorrow ! I'll try and post a video on it after I get it setup.

About a yr ago I think I got into it w. the WT snare drum aficionados (Especially the Sounds like a drum channel folk). My point was "A terrible solution to a problem that doesn't exist ! " 😛. I used your link Cole (Where you reviewed different batter heads for snares rapidly w/a dial tune). As opposed to poor Nick "NDV" (A world class drummer) struggling to change heads on the WT. I recommended the Dialtune at the time (Both priced around 900 ish at the time). The Dialtune would never be my primary snare but a secondary if needed. (I prefer my Ludwig's- Supra, BB's, etc and for "Shady gigs" A cheap Yammy Stage Custom Steel works fine). Boy were the Welsh snare drum fans pissed at me 😂🤣😂 Sorry. Didn't mean to cause a ruckus 😁and No I'm not paid by Dialtune. Infact I'm negotiating with my guy at GC for a deal on the Dialtune ! Hope this link gets posted, Watch how quickly Cole blazes through 6 drum heads on the Dialtune ! Meanwhile poor Nick struggles to change heads on the WT Snare. Thanks for chiming in Dilan. I've got no beef with WTS and I know the DT folks have a lot of respect for them too. That said, I'm with you that functionally, the WTS is a nonstarter in the areas the DT really excels.
I'm not a pro drummer but I know a little bit about drums. I like the concept & design. If I were a working drummer I'd buy it, but I'd like to see improved dials, maybe a fold out lever on the dial that would make a crank motion instead of a dial motion.

It seems to me that this would be great for drummers like me that hit pretty hard and have to constantly tighten the tuning rods that back off.
Regarding the snare throw off, the one on the new version looks like a cheap Pearl knock off and is a detractor. A good throw off is essential, and I would pay a little more to have that included on what is otherwise a well engineered drum. This was a great demo and review. You certainly piqued my interest! Thanks.
You can buy the dw throw off and install it yourself self. It’s pretty easy to do

Other methods have been tried before but never marketed,with air and also with hydraulic fluid, but never mass manufactured.Tne reson why was partially financing and drummers prefered to stay with tuning straight forward and reliable.Roto toms were the cheesie way out,lot to do with marketable fade. Another example was plexiglass octabonds, Never made much of in wood.Cost of mass marketing and probably couldnt sell manyWell thumbs up to the folks that give it a shot,good luck ,hope i can give it a try some time

In my opinion for the company to really reach the hands of consumers is to be able to retro-fit this system to other drums and possibly offer it only in a top head configuration as well. We all have our snares that we like and being able to change tuning like this on the fly and not have a side snare or additional snares on a smaller tour would be beneficial. The main concern seeing this would be that cable, Cable's do fray and it will not be able to hold tension over time so making this an easy part to address I wouldn't mind. All in all I think the snares right now sound great and the way it tunes sound fine in my opinion. Being able to put this on my own snare I would pay up to $200USD for something like this.

Totally valid thoughts! The retro-fit concept is definitely something they're interested in, and the current strategy, I think, is based on logistical simplicity. It's a whole can of worms to make sure it can fit on every model snare - especially if you're trying to do it without drilling any new holes. The top head only config is an interesting idea - I hadn't thought of that. As far as the cable goes, I can confirm it definitely holds tension over time, but indeed it can fray. Not sure how exactly how long they last with the latest formula, but it isn't something you'd be changing frequently.
I get where you're coming from. Would be nice for $200. However it would cannibalize the sale of the Dialtune snare itself, Cost of R&D, patents etc isn't cheap especially for a fairly new "start-up" like Dialtune. DWe could've installed those wireless electronics into a PDP and sold those kits for 1/5 th price. A gorgeous electronic wireless maple PDP kit ! But DW won't. Why ? they would've buried every electronic drum manufacturer. (Including Roland who bought out DW ! 🤪) Plus DW makes $$$'s of their high margin Collectors kits. Its just biz . So I don't see Dialtune going that route...yet
Dang at that price that's becoming very interesting. How does it hold tune for rimshotting heavier players? Even if it does back off, it beats having to tune your snare during shows completely by feel because those 2 lugs came loose.
At regular tunings, it shouldn't back off at all. At super low tunings with heavy rimshots, it's possible to get a small amount of backing off.
This is huge for me as a heavy hitting rimshot player
@@d.j.cantelli8074 sometimes I tune my lugs again between songs just by feel and it's pretty off. I don't have a drum tech lol this thing could be a lifesaver.
Imagine this with a Zikit system installed in it?!…. It would be a heavy bitch, but you’d never find a single snare with the same amount of possibilities….
The Zikit I have yet to try in person. Really interesting concept, yet something I find hard to believe works in execution. That said, that's originally how I felt about DT so I'm definitely open minded about it.
@@ColeParamore Ive been using the Zikit system in a PDP concept maple snare drum live for about two years now. And it’s pretty awesome! It not only works every time, but I haven’t even noticed it wearing the heads any more than usual. It’s saved me from having to bring a side snare for certain songs we do, I just click it to 12 or 10 and she’s good to go. I highly suggest you check it out, I honestly think one of these snares with a Zikit in it would be like the end all side snare.

CNC means you only pay the cost of the machining and the material. With casting the cost per making a part is a lot cheaper, but the upfront cost of the dies/setup is expensive. As you said a lot is economy of scale. They are probably well invested (dep in the hole) till they sell a lot of these.

Not poo pooing on this at all because I definitely see the interest and the value and the versatility but I have to imagine all that hardware is adding a tremendous amount of mass to that shell and that convenience, seemingly, would come at the cost of the tone of the shell the hardware is attached to. Obviously this is always a factor on any drum but it seems particularly relevant in this case.
Hey Stan, totally valid points. Interestingly, there’s actually less contact between the hardware and the shell than on a normal drum. More mass for sure, but it’s possible the shell is actually less inhibited.

I used to lug around a pair of Gretsch Bell Brass, so I don't think this would be that big of a deal.
This is true. For those that try to keep their gigging equipment as light as possible, this isn't it. For anyone willing to carry a bell brass of any sort, Keplinger, or similar such heavy snare, this won't be any heavier. Personally I try to keep my hardware as light as possible, but a heavy snare doesn't much bother me.
I would buy a Tama Bell Brass, The new Zildjian Bell Brass or even the Gretsch one. Luv the Gretsch Phosphor Bronze too. Only thing stopping me is the cost of those snares and the inevitable back lash from the old lady . Not the weight.😁
I bought this snare, returned it a week later.. Long story short, it's just way way too heavy to be carrying around to gigs on a nightly basis. I ended up buying something else instead. 🤷🏽

@@ColeParamore lol, or a DW Concrete shell! Actually I decided on a 5x14 aluminum Gretsch Grand Prix with 302 woodchoppers. I needed a workhorse snare and having a similar tuning range as an Acroliite it was a perfect choice. Light too!

Bought the maple it sounded like brass, drum is very heavy my opinion is it's not a $600 sounding snare, I understand where they are trying to go with the concept fast easy tuning and changing heads but definitely try and play one before you buy it. Like I said this is my opinion

While it's true that something like "hearing with eyes" would have similarly captured what I was describing, and also true that I wasn't using the term placebo in a strictly pharmaceutical sense, it is still relevant here. A placebo is an inert substance or a lack of real change in a particular variable that, nevertheless, results in a real change in the subject. In this case I (or anyone) might be the subject, and the "placebo" is the brass snare. Think of it as a small pill made of black nickel over brass, lol.
As to your points about the actual drum, as far as an aluminum shell goes, stay tuned (no pun intended). I can confirm that personally, bottom head tension doesn't get used much, but in a few cases where I needed to do a very specific sound it was super helpful.

@@ColeParamore How much Time is saved changing heads if the Entire Kit isn't Quick Change?.. If speed of head swapping is a selling point, across a kit that savings is negligible. It's an over complication of a Time Tested Fundamental Functional Instrument; turning a snare drum into a Rube Goldberg Machine, a Novelty. When you play a demonstration would be nice if you played it as one would tune it traditionally, striking not center as you dail up, instead playing near the rim at each lug.. Would like to hear if there is equal tension distribution around the drum at each lug, via tone and pitch potential difference (at different tensions). Also, what is maximum tension, Does heavy hitting affect the tensioning system? It wasn't a broken concept, why "fix" it... Just seems to add more variables, that given a catastrophic failure (which occurs when striking things with force to produce sound), would complicate repair... Example: Who carries specialized drum cord? What about a bent specialty Rim?...
@@thosalmon834 Hey Thos, you bring up some valid questions as well as some points that I don't think apply for most people.
As far as not having the system on a full kit - that's in the works. They aren't purposefully ignoring the full drum set, it's a huge R&D lift to do something like that and it makes sense to start with the most important drum on the kit. I would also contend that most people change their snare heads more often than their toms/kick, so it makes sense even if you just have the snare.
The rest of your issues seems to boil down to "if it ain't broke why fix it?". It's totally reasonable to keep using traditional drums or to not even be interested in something like this, but assuming it isn't of use to anyone seems like an obvious error. One could have made many of the same points about manual cars vs. automatics. You'll note that today both styles of car exist, and some people staunchly prefer one vs. the other, while others use both for different purposes.

No, It shouldn't be your next snare. No better than the roto snare and many other versions of this same thing that all failed.
I believe there are significant and fairly obvious differences between this and the roto snare, but feel free to elaborate. If you prefer traditional snares, no sweat. Perhaps it shouldn't be YOUR next snare.
