“She’s filing her nails while they’re dragging the lake.” Genius lyrics.
Best song lyric ever
watching the detectives....she's a stone cold B❗✌
Hooray! Love Elvis Costello! His catalogue is amazing. There's no one else like him. As he matures, his voice gets more and more beautiful. He does a wide variety of styles and his songwriting is top notch. A very intelligent and witty guy as well as a great guitarist. He's quite eccentric so he doesn't appeal to everyone.
Elvis Costello & Joe Jackson brought British new wave to us rockers in the late 70’s… I loved it!
Great Reaction…
Joe Jackson “Look Sharp” should come next!
Love Joe Jackson too! I've seen them both live several times ... GREAT performers! From Jackson's early years I really like It's Different for Girls and I'm the Man. Look Sharp also cooks pretty good!
@@frankpentangeli7945I saw Joe Jackson in 1979 at the Roxy in LA.
@@Rock_Snob Sweet! I only saw him a couple of times in the 90s, and he kicked ass. His Rain album is my favourite of his.
And I’m the Man by Joe Jackson

I'M THE MAN WHO GAVE YOU THE YO-YO
Reggae music from Elvis is simply legendary for me.
Saw Elvis Costello sing this on SNL in 1977 and bought the album the next day.
Me too...
I think he hot banned after that because he played a different song than they wanted...lol
Elvis Costello wrote "Veronica" when his Grandmother was suffering from Alzheimer's Disease..Which i truly related to because at that time,, My Grandmother was suffering from it too...R.I.P Veronica & Margaret 🙏❤️
Such a great song after so many years of pumping out magic. He never lost it.
@got2soar 100% Agreed & Many don't know that his (Elvis's) Father was also a successful musician. ..As I said,, I can really relate to it considering that at that time my Grandmother was suffering from Alzheimer's as well,, So while the song is beautiful to listen to,, It naturally also makes me a bit sad thinking of my Grandmother & All she was going through..Not to mention the fact that her son (My Father) would also end up suffering & passing away from Alzheimer's too..R.I.P. Dad 🙏❤️
What a great freaking song.
He has so much good music and so varied it's scary. His first four five albums were all fire perfect albums without a bad track. This is from his first in 1977.
He can sing and play almost every genre.
Side Note: Elvis Costello is married to Canadian jazz pianist and singer, Diana Krall (since 2003). She's sold more than 15 million albums worldwide in her career. They sometimes perform together.
Diana is amazing!
Before that Cait O’Riordan the Pogues bassist.
Yes, Diana is very good. Peel me a Grape is a good one to check out.
@@jlstock_1 I know it well!
One of the coolest drum sounds ever.
Stevie Wonder _Jammin_
I got stood up on a date in 1978. It was raining, I was pissed off. So I spent the money for the date on going to see Elvis Costello instead. You could do that back then. Just turn up & pay at the door, even for acts that had already had hits & been on TV (as Elvis had at that point) I ended up seeing him half a dozen times more in the years that followed & bought the first 5 albums. A much longer relationship than anything I'd have got from that date ! Plus I only spent about half the money she'd have cost me on the night. In the end, she did me a favour.
There's a life lesson in there somewhere 🤣
Love that story!!! Thanks for sharing.
Filing her nails as they're dragging the lake! Classic!!!!
Pump it Up!
My favorite EC song. :)
"She looks so good that he gets down and begs..."
Thanks, men. My favorite Elvis Costello tune by far, used to play it all the time as a deejay...he's watching his girlfriend watch an old-time Detective movie...
Loved Elvis Costello back in the late 70s.. And discovering in the 90s that he was a Deadhead only solidified my respect for his songwriting.
Here's a video of a concert he gave in 22 of him playing Garcia/Hunter songs ua-cam.com/video/tGgjAD9n6Ns/v-deo.htmlsi=9UZYsBWEoOR6-SY0
My favorite from Elvis Costello, so thanks. "Everyday I Write The Book" is also worth a listen.
That's my favorite too!
My second favorite is What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love and Understanding.
@@324cmac After a small think about it, I forgot to mention "Shipbuilding". If ever there was a time for that song, it is now.
Elvis Costello was a great lyricist and musician.
And still is!
He was considered to be quirky but in actuality he was a genius. This song is later 70’s. Some of my favorites are EVERYDAY I WRITE THE BOOK, ACCIDENTS WILL HAPPEN, ALISON, PEACE LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING, PUMP IT UP, RED SHOES
Side Note #2: This year Elvis Costello (69 years old) & The Imposters and Daryl Hall (77 years old) are touring small towns (like Carnation, WA; Bend, OR; and Saratoga, CA) in the U.S. together. And their ticket prices are relatively reasonable (general admission is $50). Should be a great show.
My Aim Is True is a strong first album for the prolific song writer. Alison, Red Shoes and Mystery Dance are some of my favorites from Elvis.
New Wave Music is the bastard child of Punk and Disco. ✌️
This came out in '78 or so. I didn't get turned on to this album until '87ish. The entire album is GREAT!
Watching the Detectives was actually released in the Year 1977 and I remember very vividly listening to it on a blasting Jukebox in a Crowded and Jumping Northeast Philly Bar throwing down some Ice Cold 🍺🍺🍺 as me and my Rock Band were getting ready in a Few Days to head to New Orleans for some Gigs our Manager had lined up for us! 🎸🥁
@@j.j.upright4010 Awesome!
Elvis Costello produced the first album by British Ska band, The Specials. It really is worth hearing and knowing about.
Aha!
The lyrics are from a man's point of view, and he's explaining how his lover would rather watch a detective show on TV than be with him. When she says “he's so cute,” she's referring to the detective she's watching on TV, and not the man standing beside her. And that's the source of his frustration.
Yes, like the Cars, Blondie, the Police, Devo, etc., this was the leading edge of post-punk and New Wave. I think you guys would love "Everyday I write the Book" and "Beyond Belief"; they really show how diverse his sound was during this period.
Great song recommendations, I agree!
One of the greatest lyricists ever , this was 1977 and the start of a run of great albums that were all different. One of the best backing bands ever to back up a truly great songwriter.
The Attractions are one of the best ever backing bands ... but they didn't back EC until his second record. For this one, he was backed by an American roots rock band named Clover. Google that band and be surprised.
@@notabritperse I know they didn't.
Elvis is one of the best lyricists of the modern era. Love his stuff.
One of the best songwriters of the punk/new wave era.
In all of rock, really.
Early music was very good the band was great live band is great 👍 they got started by playing to young kids in the afternoon
Elvis Costello is something else.. and he doesn't have a lot of play in reaction circles.. I am glad you guys got to him.. And I hope you go deeper in the catalogue... kudos!
ELVIS COSTELLO!!! Yay! He is my all time favorite artist. You can’t genre-fy him. His father was a jazz musician and his mother worked in a record store. He says his mom was his biggest musical influence. In his 25 studio albums, he has incorporated punk, R&B, country, jazz, pop, and classical. He has collaborated with everyone from Burt Bacharach to the Brodsky Quartet to the Roots. He’s written and performed classical and opera pieces. He is brilliant.
My Aim is True (1977) is his debut album. It is fantastic. You should listen to the whole thing (please). My favorite album: The Delivery Man. I saw him in Atlantic City for that tour, and went straight out and bought the CD. He sang “The Scarlet Tide” acapella to a silent audience. It was divine. 🥹
Fun fact: Elvis didn't have his own band when he recorded his first album, so on this song he's backed by a group called Clover, whose usual lead singer was Huey Lewis.
They played on the album, but not this song. And the song wasn't on the UK album. It was included later on the U.S version.
This is the Attractions, not Clover. Wasn't on the UK My Aim is True album. Released as a single after he assembled his band.
Nice "Island Beat". When you guys have time, please check out more Elvis C. Have a great week, dudes. Always looking forward, as per usual...
No Sirrs, this song was recorded in 1977. Remember it well. U had 2 buy the album back then. Loved the beat when I was 12. My older brother/sister kept me up to date.
My Aim Is True is one of those great debut albums where every song offers something. Check out "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes", "Less Than Zero", "Allison" and "Pay It Back" for a taste.
You’ve stumbled onto another genius musician. When they first showed up I didn’t understand what was going on and didn’t pay any attention to them. Being a hard core Rush, Zeppelin, Sabbath, and Judas Priest fan, it wasn’t until around 1982 that the Talking Heads got my attention and launched my deep dive into the punk and early new wave music scene. The entire album this song was on is incredible.
In recognition of his being a musical genius, in 2001 he was the artist in residence at UCLA for a year. While there he did some very creative work. It’s been fun to watch his progression over the years. But my favorite era of his was the first five years or so. I encourage you to react to my favorite on this album, “Less Than Zero.” And for a change up, also on this album, I think you’ll like his ballad, “Allison.”
Also, you should dig into the record label on which his first album was released, Stiff Records. They produced some of the key punk and new wave groups at the beginning of this genre.
This one appeared as a single in 1977,It was at the beginning of Elvis´ career.
Elvis Costello is such a talent. He has experimented with so many genres and produced so much great music
BTW,I bought this album after he played on SNL,1977
I always loved the itchy reggae groove of this excellent tune off EC’s first LP.
“Gotta Look Sharp” is another winner
I love the rhythms of this and the manic drum fills. Have you guys done "(I don't want to go to) Chelsea" yet? I'd suggest that for your next Elvis Costello.
Another great album that's a debut album!
Elvis Costello - Watching The Detectives was released in 1977.
Love this... Works well with Sniff and the Tears, early Tears for Fears, early Police, Squeeze and early Simple minds
This whole album is excellent. To me, it’s his best
Fantastic drum work here by Steve Goulding. About 20 years ago I played this song for a friend who is a prog rock drummer -- it blew him away. He said, "Who even thinks of those licks?"
So. I graduated in '80. In the late 70's, we would watch Saturday Night Live and they started showing bands like Blondie, Talking Heads, The Specials, DEVO, etc. My friends and I were all listening to Zep, Van Halen, etc. and then all this new stuff drifted into our vision via SNL. At first, we were a little resistant, but when I saw Elvis Costello do this and Radio Radio, that was IT. I cut off my Robert Plant hair and got fully into all the British new wave, punk and ska bands. I still love all my 70's rock, but we learned that there was more out there musically than Foreigner and Def Leppard.
Wordsmith extraordinaire! What he can do with lyrics is amazing. The first 3 LPs are all perfect, my fave is “This Year’s Model”. High energy, intelligent and clever from start to finish. Glad you liked him. 👍
One of the lyrical masters and a standout in New Wave.
Fun fact: he decided to form a band after seeing a 5 hour grateful dead show at the bickershaw festival in 1972
Love Elvis, one of the most eclectic artists around. I e seen him over 20 years through the years. No show is ever the same. I Want You is my favorite song by Costello. ✌️♥️🎶
I’ve seen him close to 20x. Saw him in Atlantic City with guests Fiona Apple, Billie Joe Armstrong, and Death Cab for Cutie. Have you seen Fiona’s cover of “I Want You”? She killed it!
@@kathiek4239 I was there in Atlantic City, I live in Philly. I cried tears when she sang that. It was so moving. ♥️
@@dianedavies8291 That concert was awesome! I had no idea who Death Cab was, but I loved Fiona and Billy Joe!
I lived in Philly at the time as well! We went to AC all the time for concerts, it was so easy/close. We also saw Elvis there on The Delivery Man tour which was one of my favorites.
@@kathiek4239 same here, I loved the singer Ben Gibbard’s songwriting after listening to him with Elvis. I saw The Delivery Man tour at the Tower, he had Emmy Lou with him. I took my daughter, it was her first Elvis concert, she was about 20. I was up dancing and she said “Mom, you’re drawing attention to yourself”. I’m like you can’t sit down at a concert, lol…kids, lol.
@@dianedavies8291 I feel like the only time I sat through an Elvis concert was when he was touring with that classical piece he wrote. We hauled ass down to Baltimore where he performed with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. It was funny because the rock crowd didn’t know/understand the symphony “etiquette” of NOT clapping after every piece of music. Half would clap, half would stay still like a proper symphony audience. It was quite a treat to hear songs like “Watching the Detectives” with an orchestra. Like you said, never saw the same show twice.
Tell your lucky daughter that us old people don’t sit down at concerts!
Love that early Elvis. First few lps especially. This Years Model my favorite.
Yep. That album had it all.
Never been a big Costello fan but this song is just crazy good.
This was on a great album, new wave was well cool
This is an infusion of British 'New Wave' and the huge popularity of Reggae which took place when the sounds of Bob Marley. Jimmy Cliff, Toots and the Maytals (and others) hit our shores around 1976. Costello's delivery on this cuts like a knife.
Pump it up, Radio, Oliver's army.
It took me a little while to adopt Elvis's style but eventually I really got into it. For me it's best record so far is pump it up! Peace and love brothers!
Elvis Costello is a genius. Play more please!! I have seen him 4 times. Last time just a couple of years ago. First time in 1979 or 1980. He is married to the great Jazz musician Dianah Krall. Play more Elvis Costello!!! ❤❤❤
Costello's greatest track.
YES! I saw you guys reacted to this and I thought.. "ohhhh I don't know if they'll like it." I LOVE Elvis Costello - he's a great songwriter and a very witty lyricist. So glad you enjoyed it!! Every Day I Write the Book, What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding The Only Flame, and Shipbuilding should be your next considerations. Thanks again for the great reactions!!!!!!
Pump it up is my favourite Track by him. If only to see his rubber ankles in the vid . All my best to you and yours from Liverpool
This album was released in '77. They played the Hollywood High School auditorium in 1978 - the recordings were released in 2010 "Live at Hollywood High"
Crazy song, that late1970's sound ..all you really need ..
Elvis Costello has the dubious honour of being the first person to cause my dad to swear outloud when he appeared on Top of the Pops. performing "Pump it Up" He was heard to say "WTF is that!?" before leaving the room shaking his head 👍🤪🇬🇧
Wide-screen treatment of the 3 minute pop song. 🎵 🎶 🎵 🎶 😊
I just found out that Elvis Costello is playing at Daryl's House at the Pantages Theater and l'm thinking about going....hmmm🤔🤘🎶
I always find in astonishing that Elvis helped usher in the New Wave sound, and he's married to the most wonderful jazz piano/singer, who is soooo smooth, the famous Diana Krall. She's a worthy of a watch and reaction.
Love the keys, and drum fills of this song.
Still amazing after all these years
Pretty dope. EC (vocals/guitar), Steve Nieve (keys), Andrew Bodnar (bass) and Steve Goulding (drums)
I had forgotten about that Elvis! Solid groove!!!
Unusual brilliance!
Great album. Mystery Dance and Waiting for the End of the World are classics.
Oh, yeah. This is my childhood. My mom LOVED Elvis Costello. His album Spike and this one seemed like they were in constant rotation. Spike had some bangers if I remember correctly.
I don't remember the bass line going so damn hard on this one!
Great Costello song. Lots more to explore!!
Costello has been my main man for nigh on 50 years, there's so much to enjoy you could have a channel dedicated to his stuff.
The ode to The Police...by Elvis Costello.....he's got a bunch of bangers. Oliver's Army ...Everyday I write the book.....good stuff.
I used to be the singer in a band, and this was one of the songs we used to cover. I was young and naive and I hadn't worked out that the vocals on the last verse are double-tracked - I almost had a seizure trying to fit in all the words without running out of breath 🥴
New wave classic
Elvis Costello was pretty unique for the time he was having hits. He’s a talented songwriter and he’s got a lot of style. He doesn’t exactly have the deepest catalog. But I’m a fan. I wouldn’t mind at all if you did more of his stuff.
Another one of my favorite artists! Love Elvis and this is an intense song. "Smoke one and put that on" lol and EXACTLY what we did when this album came out in 1977, my sophomore year in HIGH school(putting the "HIGH" back in High School!). Whole album is great and it was his first. LOVE seeing you guys looking into this end of the music spectrum! New Wave rocks! Thanks La and Che and keep up the great reactions!
Yay!!! Another fave !!
This song was used for theme song for a PBS show called History Detectives.
It was so unbelievably exciting when this music came out, I can’t even tell you!!
Goats head soup....amazing album
Great album.
Not a huge Costello fan, but I’ve always liked this one! Thanks!
Love this tune - performed live on SNL
Plenty more to explore here. Keep going...
Paul McCartney partnered with one other songwriter after Lennox’s death, Mr. Costello. His Dad had a local variety show in Liverpool. Marketed initially as new age or punk but his stylistic range is rooted in traditional songwriting. Listen to the Fiona Apple cover of I Want You. The lyrics usually capture love going wrong or upside down. Everyday a I write the book is a lot of fun and so many more
Saw him live twice. Great
You have to do Alison!!
Killer bass!
THANKS FELLAS!
1978. English New Wave rock. It was in a space sorta halfway between punk rock and power pop. Elvis, Talking Heads, Blondie, The Clash, Joe Jackson and the like all fell into that category to one degree of the other. Elvis is an amazing songwriter. This is another classic debut album, on a level with The Cars first record. Such good stuff. "Alison", (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes", "Mystery Dance", this album is full of classic songs.
The last song on this, his first album 'waiting for the end of the world' is my favorite
You gotta hear his song - *Pump It Up*
Great reaction! I love some vintage EC!
Bad Company - Live for the Music
Flashback!! Haven't heard this one in about 40 years!! Good stuff!!
