Mark you are amaizing, I do Ashtanga for the last 2 years and before that I have 33 years sports experience as wrestler and Bodybuilding but Ashtanga has change me a lot and I am happy to see how far you have gone, thank you for the amaizing demo
thank you to your wonderful great energy practice..and thank you for reminding us about living with the well preparing before we leave this world..Namaste
well, the chanting track itself was used in the Series 6 Feet Under during a Buddhist Funeral Ceremony. the episode is Season 2, Episode 10 "The Secret". You can find it on You Tube.
So very very annoyed that Santina's third series demo has now been blocked in the UK by EMI. That has been on my favourites list for two years (along with this fab fourth series video by Mark Togni)
Thank you blackmamba for the clarification. I was curious about the further levels of difficulty or complexity of movements from a purely physical aspect.
Have been a big fan of Santina's Videos, can't believe I've missed this one 'till now. Inspiring stuff, not just that the poses but the manner in which they're approached, that you can still see the work that's gone into them. Plus I haven't been able to get these words out of my head all week. Hope it's OK to embed it on my blog, saw you said it was OK below.
Hi, thank you for sharing this video. It is really inspirational to watch the practice of the more advanced series of Ashtanga. I would really like to know what the chanting is during the Encouraging words section? Om Shanti...........
I am 44 and just started 4 months ago practicing Ashtanga...I am concern about the headstand in primary series since I fear injury in so trying, is there a way around it? It seems all the weight is transfered to my head and not evenly distribuited to both elbows...I thought the goal was to enlongate not to compress the spine...
I have to share with you how excited I was to have heard this chant on your video. May I ask your interest or knowledge in that particular chant? I am Cambodian myself and was shocked, but thrilled to have heard it on here. My family are Cambodian Buddhist, and it wasn't until my journey in yoga that had me more interested in my culture. I have been a participated in this prayer and chant my whole life. THANK YOU!
what does it mean - not practicing well? it sounds like threatening, like you will be punished if you don't practice well.. and what is the purpose of (being able to do) all those complicated asanas?
Hey mark, I've always heard (or assumed) that Kandasana is the first pose of fifth series. But, in your video and in a few other people's practice of fourth, they have it after Omkarasana. Is kandasana the last official pose of fourth series?
I understand the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of consistent practice, but is getting yourself to that advanced type of level necessary? (Is there expanded conscious/insight to be gained here by mastering those asanas? ) Is there any benefits of mastering the advanced series? (e.g. do you gain better focus in your meditation that you have before, muscle tension harder to get, etc.?) Like how does that experience feel when you get at that level?
Asana means to sit comfortably. It's only 1/8 of the path. It's excellent for many reasons, but is not the ultimate goal of yoga. A healthy body that has been mastered leads to a healthy mastered mind and healthy energy and wisdom and then bliss. Breathe control at his level is very useful in many ways. Mastery of the breathe and prana definitely helps with meditation. He is in a state of meditation when doing his Asana practice. All eight parts of the path are important. But there are those that choose to emphasize some more than others. Because of his intense flexibility and comfort in these extreme positions, it is probably easy for him to sit for hours maybe even days without moving in perfect harmony with himself and his surroundings. And if he practices his pranayama as much as he does his asana he would only need to take one breath per minute or possibly every 3-5 minutes or longer. If his pranayama is as advanced as his asana, the conditions would be perfect for and would create a very stable foundation to meditate in and find bliss and then ultimately union or emptiness.
@DharmaWarrior108 haha i wish this question had an answer..i used to ask the same..its a long journey for what i know..but no price too high to pay to get our arse off of this place lol
That was remarkable. I am a student of Yoga and have studied Ashtanga Yoga with my Guru Sheshadri of Mysore ans Saraswati Jois of The Yoga Research Institute. I thought that the sixth series was a secret, passed down only to the late great Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and perhaps now to his grandson, Sharath and daughter Saraswati. Is this true or legend. Mark, may I ask you where you are located and do you offer classes or seminars? May I also assume you studied with Pattabhi Jois? Blessings, Nancy
You did not practice yoga, you just worked out using asanas. I am sorry that you missed this wonderful feeling, maybe you will someday. And btw there is no chance you can do any of those postures... because if you could you would have learned something during the journey to conquer them.
I find the text in the beginning brilliant, it's something you should remind yourself every day. If you find it insulting, or religious, then you might have not found something to thrive towards. To be better in something than yesterday. To be the hero you have the potential to be! Yes, some might thrive towards church and being closer to jesus, but you use this as an inspiration, whether you play drums (for 10 years it was an obsession for me, now I have new obsessions, while playing drums as a hobby), running marathons, doing yoga, carpeting, programming or whatever, just find something you want to practice, and don't give up!
I love seeing a tribute to Papaji at the end of a high level ashtanga demonstration. He was a dedicated bhakti yogi before his enlightenment.
World today need more advanced and open minded teachers! Thank you for posting!

Jonathan Reyles that ' s a very good question!

To who r u talking to?
This is all bcz of flexibility......
And strength, and dedication. Flexibility is earned
U can see there is no muscle in her body
Your point?
whilst this is all well and good he looks incredibly sickly. the text at the beginning has very negative church-like connotations
Huh, how does he look sickly? He looks like a pro contortionist.
Lew Lew Your answer is your own projection and conditioning.
you know nothing about the yogic philosophy.
this dude is an amazing yoga master, the text in the beginning should get you inspired to get you off you youtube and do some yoga baby
I find the text in the beginning brilliant, it's something you should remind yourself every day. If you find it insulting, or religious, then you might have not found something to thrive towards. To be better in something than yesterday. To be the hero you have the potential to be!
