Hi Vince. I just want to give ya big thank you for your review of this saw.
I purchased this saw a little over a year ago based on this review. I've since used this saw pretty heavily all this past summer doing 3 composite decks and a complete vinyl siding job on our new house. I changed the blade to a 60T Diabolo for this work. It cut the vinyl like butter. FWIW, one has to pull the blade thru the vinyl rather than the traditional push thru in order to get clean, non-chipped cuts. I got precise cuts on all the composite decking as well...all flawless. It's a great saw, especially at this price point.
Here recently, I pulled that blade back off and gave it a good cleaning prior to starting the next phase of our house project. I've recently been doing window trim work primarily following the method used at Finish Carpentry TV (Richard)....all using this saw. So far, so good!!! Love this thing!!
    Again, thanks!!!

      Larry,
Thanks so much for leaving this awesome comment, myself and creators like Richard really appreciate the kind words and hearing your experiences!
I’m glad the review is helpful and I hope the saw and blade give you many more years and projects worth of work!
      Best,
      Vince

I just got it for 230$ including tax. I’m quickly falling in love with Skil. Their 14amp router combo is the best value out there, hands down. It’s gone as low as 100. I’m using this saw primarily to break down lumber and will soon need it for a lot of quick cuts when I move into a new place/shop. As far as I can tell with the few test cuts, it’s dead on straight from the factory. Good job skil

I got this saw last year and used it to rebuild my deck, including cutting all the composite boards to length. It's been a champ and I couldn't be more pleased with it. I liked it so much I just bought the Skil 10 inch portable tablesaw.

I’m a believer. Own the miter saw, table saw and a few 12v cordless tools. The saws have been absolutely amazing. I been actually shocked with the cordless tools! If you a weekend warrior and want good tools at a good price, in my opinion SKIL is hard to beat.

Thanks very much for this review. I had a cheapie Chicago Electric sliding miter saw for many years, but now I'm working on a home theater project with a ton of crown and other moldings, so I needed to step up. I didn't spend a million dollars on this saw, but it's a huge improvement. Accuracy is very impressive, just as you found. I did change the blade to a 60-tooth, low angle ATB (couldn't find a negative rake in any local stores) but you're right, the stock blade was impressive out of the box for a 40T. Thanks for confirming my good impression. Great saw for the money.

Just received and set up this exact saw this afternoon. It was dead on right out of the box. There were a couple or minor things I ran into: 1. The saw lock was pretty loose and would engage on every cut locking the saw down. There is a 2.5mm set screw there on the side of the sliding lock bolt which I slightly tightened up and solved that issue. 2. I wanted to put a 60T fine-cut blade on it. Loosening the cover screw to move the cover back to expose the blade bolt was somewhat of a challenge....until I realized that the screw has to be almost completely backed out in order for the cover to move. BTW, blade bolt is reverse thread: clockwise to loosen.
I made several cuts with various thicknesses, and this beast ate it up.
Overall, it's a nice piece of equipment, especially for a DYIer/homeowner/hobbiest. Great saw.
I know this video is over a year and a half old, but still want to say "thank-you, Vince", for putting it out there for us.

I've had my 10" Skil miter saw for a while now and I gotta say it is a real nice machine. I has all the major features and it does everything it's supposed to do. Stock blade is ok for a while but you'll need to replace it with a better one, but that's common.

A 12 inch Dewalt sliding I was just on sale a few weeks ago at Home Depot for 299 I think. What I’m looking at now is the Bosch. Since it has a smaller footprint when it comes to the sliding mechanism you don’t have to worry about it sitting so far back like the dewalt and skill. Takes up less space for a shop.

Thanks for reviewing the Skil 10”. I’m a fan of Skil products. I inherited a table saw, it’s probably 30 yrs. old works great. I’m a DYI person. I appreciate you really doing such a thorough review. The light / shadow bothers me. I have a Skil circular saw, the laser is non existent in the sun. Sailboat rehab - that’s the sun issue. There was a mention in another comment about changing the blade…going to find one at the store for more investigation. Really appreciate all you great videos.

I was given a brushless 36 volt Ryobi 10" dual bevel sliding miter saw for a birthday present 6 years ago. I use it at least once a week cutting trim and gutters and whatever else I'm replacing. It's nice and light weight and I've never had an issue with power even cutting red oak or pressure treated 2x8s i run it with 2 4 amp HP batteries (even though it's not an HP saw). It's easy to carry to job sites and makes nice cuts. The only complaint i have is that it has a laser guide as opposed to a shadow line.

Accurate out of the box, doesn’t feel cheap, shadow line is excellent and way better than a laser, clean cuts with stock blade, fairly light, smooth slide, easy to adjust mitre and bevel, and plenty of small features like decent markers etc. The only thing I don’t like is it has poor sawdust collection. Great buy for the money.

    Woodworking Beginner: Update.
This test is only if you want to saw with precision with a miter saw.(test is not intended for rough and hard work).
Tips and Test: Remember this test is only about torsion.
Very important if you would like to saw with precision. (avoid torsion as much as possible)!
Always choose a Miter saw with a handle positioned in a VERTICAL line above the saw blade.
Everything must be aligned, slide rails, handle, and saw blade,it is much better this way the blade will not tilt.
Because there is some torsion in the aluminum housing .
And choose an engine with softstart on it to prevent wear of the gear and worm shaft.
It is very important that everything is aligned.
Here are some examples to show how the handle must be positioned above the blade.
First option: handle vertical positioned in line above the saw blade.
    Bosch gcm 800 sj / Bosch gcm 8 sjl / Evolution rage 3 / FESTOOL KS 60 / Bosch GCM 8 SDE / FESTOOL KS 60 E KAPEX / Metabo KGSV 72 Xact/ Bosch PCM 8 SD / Hitachi C10FSH / Evolution Fury3-S / Evolution R255SMS / Metabo HPT C10FSBS / Hitachi C10FSB / Hitachi C10FS.
Second optie: handle horizontal positioned in line above the saw blade / Evolution R185SMS / Evolution F255SMS / Evolution RAGE3R255 SMS3 / Ridgid MS255SR 10-inch
(This also is the case with the Miter saw without the slide rails).
(If you want). You can test it yourself at home if there is torsion in the aluminum housing.
Step-1. First you make a saw cut from +-5 mm deep in to a flat piece of wood about +- 20 mm thick to this with the normal handle positioned on the right side of the Miter saw (the wood it will remain in place until the test is completed).
Step-2. Then repeat this by pushing the saw blade down with your hand or finger on the aluminum protective cover were the saw blade is cased in. Just now only do this without the running engine.
Step-3. Now you can see if the saw blade will be positioned in or next to the saw cut. If the saw blade is (+- 0,2 / 0,5 mm) next to the saw cut then there is torsion in the aluminum housing.
    (test is completed).
Step-4. Therefor it is much better to choose a Miter saw with the handle positioned VERTICAL in line above the saw blade.
The second option is the handle positioned HORIZONTAL in line above the saw blade.
Step-5. When you measure the vertical 90 degrees angle square (Digital Level Box) of you're sawblade don't forget that there is always some torsion in the aluminum housing.
Conclusion: how further away the handle is from the saw blade how more chance of torsion in the aluminum housing, you better not go for that. Remember this, the test is only about torsion and nothing else. (the choices are yours).
Also with a cheap slide miter saw it is still better the handgriff in line a above the saw blade than on the right side. Maybe they will make it someday then we have a winner...

It's accurate and lightweight compared to my 12 inch saws. 99.9% of anything I want to do is done with this 10" saw. My 12" saws collect the dust this saw makes. I can't say good enough things about it. I can't say bad enough things about my 12" Metabo. I'll never own another Metabo product after my experience with it.

Just picked one up and will be returning it. The outer supports are about 15-20thousands lower than the turn table (right support lower than the left). This is a big issue if you clamp on the supports (which is mostly the case) the work piece will be uphill towards the blade and not cut square no matter how square the blade is. I had this issue with a cheap "entry level" unit and swore i would never own one like it again, I didn't expect it on a $300 machine. I will keep looking...

It's also nice how they make the new miter saws they are lighter more compact they Incorporated handles and having that dual bevel instead of just a single and turning the wood upside down or you cut it the wrong way tools have changed so much even the first battery operated tools the batteries and tools together were so big it was almost impossible to get them inside cabinets you actually had to move the gun around test to get into the right position that's why my father uses the Milwaukee M12 because they're Compact and have plenty of power

Thankfully you pointed out it was heavily greased as opposed to lightly greased ! Kidding buddy I am a contractor looking for a drag around miter saw. I hv a 12” Makita corded in my shop on a nice stand and it’s “Flat & plumb to the cut” with a Chop master blade (finish carpenter & cabinet maker). So when I do trim outta of the shop I need a saw! My 12” fixed Dewalt is getting to much to drag out! Thank u for the video!

These things are flying off the shelf. Would love to see another video going through some of the features, your thoughts now that it's been a few months (assuming you've been using it), changing the blade, etc. Thanks for all the great content, VCG/Vince. Cheers!

I enjoyed your video. I bought one of these a couple of months ago. So far so good but I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't have any detents for bevels between 90 degrees and 45 degrees. Also, when I first took it out of the box I was impressed with the cam operated hold-down clamp for quick adjustments but two minor problems: I doesn't tighten as much as a screw down clamp and I wish it was tall enough to go over the top of the high extended fence. But other that than that I like it so far. UPDATE: another disappointment with this saw is that it doesn't have a 30 degree miter detent. I made a cut at 30 degrees but it wasn't accurate enough to make a hexagonal planter without trial and error, Another saw in this price range, Kobalt 10" has more detents. Still, overall I like the saw though there is room for improvement.

I'm in the market for a 10" cordless or corded miter saw for flooring, my 12" dual bevel DWE779 is a bit overkill.

Nothing like letting your customers know your a true professional with skills than the Skil double bevel. It’s says you have skil right on the side, so you must be good...😂

Why not look at a 7.5 instead of a 10? I run the Dewalt 780 and a Milwaukee 7.5 cordless on my jobs and it eats everything I feed it. Dewalt, Skil, Metabo and Kobalt also make them

Liked the review Vince, & Nick; as really put this saw thru it’s paces and showed us ‘bout everything you can!🙏🏼
Like that saws are getting “better¹ ”, and seeing the higher end features, on more “budget & mid tier” saws for the pricing 👍🏻
11:09 No matter the brand or price; of a new saw (miter, table, circular), it’s a good habit to check the blade for accuracy outta the box. If needed, ya make those little tweaks and fine adjustments to get a “super smooth straight cut”; cuz in my experience (and opinion) doesn’t matter who made the saw; out of the box it can be a bit “wonky’; & usually might have to make a few small adjustments (doesn’t happen often, but there’s been times, when thought whoever adjusted the blade at factory, had to have eyes closed; cuz it was “that far off” 😅).
Always a great idea to check the blades, stops, etc...for accuracy 👍🏻 Also, it usually is a painless process to make the blade/stop adjustments as well (I say “usually” cuz I did have 1 miter saw, HAD, that was an absolute nightmare to make blade adjustments, not to mention swapping out the blade, itself. I bet some can make some good guessing as to what saw that was😉); so take a few minutes and double check.
    Cheers✌🏻
¹ Better=meaning good build quality, great features that are exclusive to the “higher priced tier saws”, and so on....if anyone reads this part 😉 Have a good one 🤙🏼

@VCGCONSTRUCTION. Good review Vince like always but ill stick with my DWS780. She is a beast but has never let me down. I would deff like to see a video on how you cut crown molding. Be a great example for someone who is staring out or for that diy homeowner who just bought a miter saw and wants to learn from a pro.

Thank you for all the cool videos you and your team always do. I would like to see you do a blade change on that saw on that saw. I think Skil should not use a peel and stick bevel scale. It's just a matter of time before it starts to lift especially when exposes to high temperature.

I’m a NEWBIE to any sort of saw, whether it’s powered or not. Can you please show how to make ALL possible adjusts to this saw; it clips the front of the base clearance plate yet doesn’t the back when using my bevel?

  • @hdvictoryford5329

Like the piece. And the saw looks good except that you need extra area behind the saw for full ext. I am a Ridgid guy. Except for miter saws. Their new ext arms are not stable at full ext. These styles with 2 steel bars are more accurate. And yes, Ridgid did ask me about this issue. They know it is a problem and have done nothing to fix the issue. There is a saw that solves both problems. Makita, that is my number 1 miter saw, great saw, good price and has only a draw back or 2. Ridgid will not admit the engineering issue. If you are shelling out 500.00 plus for a miter saw and it is not accurate, it is junk.
