What Papa Gut is inherently misunderstanding is the definition of grooming. People groom those in vulnerable situations all of the time for reasons that are not sexual. A manager in a scammy business will groom a young, poor employee to believe that the work environment is not only not toxic, but their peers are the problem. This type of grooming creates a personality that would one day take over as management and perpetuate the cycle of abuse. A leader in a religious cult may find a young man who is overwhelmed by financial issues, family issues, what have you, and groom this young man to be an over zealous convert that brings more people into the cult. A parent may groom their children to believe that making incredibly inappropriate content, whether sexual or not, is a good thing they should indulge in. Grooming someone is not an inherently sexual act, and Papa Gut is openly making a fool of himself.
She primed thousands of kids to be sexualized, that IS sexual and grooming, even if the context is a joke or live show, or she doesn't get off on it herself. She created an environment for predators, an ideal one, as most straight white christian family vloggers do. I'm so mad at papa gut and Ryan's coverage. They both ended up minimizing the harm that Colleen perpetrated. I'm a therapist who used to work with kids in child protection, and both of their responses frustrated me to no end! What Colleen did was textbook grooming, and Papa Gut needs to stop spreading harmful misinformation.

There are many different kinds of social workers, and social workers are not inherently good or have a great perspective of mental health. I'm in a clinical social work program and when I get my license I'll have the ability to diagnose and counsel, but that doesn't mean that everyone in my program, including myself is infallible. There are people in my program who think pretty awful things and express them readily, and I wish I could vet the folks in my own program let alone the whole profession. This defense does nothing for me and acting as though it gives him any sort of credence is ridiculous. 4) Kind of referring to my 2nd point, but again even if we give Colleen thee biggest leeway and benefit of the doubt, she still has responsibility for pretty much anything and everything that happened on her productions or watch. Cory bullying a tour member -- her responsibility! She hired Cory and his behavior was enabled by her. Fans attacking Adam, even if she didn't send them after him (which ofc she did) -- her responsibility! Frankly the level of shirking this responsibility is just absurd. I think the points she made in her ukelele video would be fine if it were not for literally everything she did, because none of those points apply to her. It's just ridiculous.

Papa Gut is heavily misinformed about grooming and it shows. Grooming doesn't have to be sexual to be grooming, it can include manipulation, gaslighting and so forth and so on. It's all about keeping said victim on a leash and thinking the person (aka the groomer) is safe to be around with etc. Yes, most grooming can be sexual, i know from experience because i was a victim of grooming. But there's also some where i didn't experience anything sexual at all. HOWEVER...it is still valid, and what adam and others experienced is valid, their trauma is valid.

Grooming doesn't always mean that an adult is trying to get their rocks off with a child. Grooming can be the abuse of a power dynamic between an adult and a child to get them to do whatever they say i.e. work for them for pennies or for free. It means making a child trust them and making them think that inappropriate conversations are normal which opens the door for another groomer to get further. Grooming can also happen between adults with an imbalanced power dynamic i.e. a bad boss and an employee. Also, apparently, Papa Gut never watched To Catch a Predator because there was no actual sexual contact involved with the predators caught but they were definitely grooming. He's probably the same type of man to say that male victims should be happy for the attention. Someone should investigate him pronto. RE UA-camrs hiring fans: My two cents nobody asked for, I don't think youtubers hiring from their audience is inherently a bad idea. I follow a few UA-camrs who have reached out to their audience for possible editors because there's already a familiarity with the content and "brand" that could be harder for a complete outsider to pick up on, and they've been up front with what they're looking for and the budget they have available. They're clear in wanting this to be a business relationship (between two adults) with clearly defined expectations and compensations. Colleen wasn't hiring from her audience though. While there is a specific form of grooming which relates to sexual or illegal acts, the complete definition of grooming more broadly applies to training or manipulating a person to behave or think in specific way that continues to benefit and provide power and control the the groomer. I see a big similarity in the limitation of grooming to purely sexual exploitation to the former perceptions that abuse is purely physical or sexual in nature and only occurs between parents and children or between romantic partners. This popular conception made it more difficult for people who experienced abuse from different sources or psychological abuse to come forward and seen as valid. By limiting general definition of grooming and abuse to purely physical or sexual, you risk putting other victims at risk or further harm and societal shaming. This is why we add descriptors in front of the word abuse to describe the specific kind of abuse: physical abuse, psychological abuse, sexual abuse, spousal abuse, parental abuse, etc. We should do the same with grooming as grooming in itself is manipulative and abusive behavior which is one of the main tools in continuing the cycle of abuse. I say this as someone who was psychologically abused by a sports coach and who has had to deal with people not believing or belittling my story because I was never physically assaulted… in fact, my abuse has a lot of similarities to Adam’s and Johnny’s abuse at the hands of Colleen and Kory and it horrifying to see people (cough cough papa gut…) continuing to minimize the damage. :/

As someone with a degree in child development, and a former CPS worker, GROOMING DOES NOT HAVE TO BE FOR SEXUAL INTENT. We see grooming in labor trafficking (i.e., using Adam for free labor as a minor) we see it in parents grooming children to take on mature roles (i.e., parentification), we see it in domestic violence perpetrators grooming their kids into participating in spousal abuse. Grooming by definition is not sexual, nor did Adam EVER state he believed Colleen was trying to sexually abuse him (although her regularly showing him pornography and normalizing sexual conversations makes that questionable at best). Papa Gut made a bad take and doubled down and is now crying like a baby because a lot of people who are more educated than he is, are telling him he is wrong.

OKay. I'm not done watching yet, but I need to get this out. Papa Gut is focused on the fact that Colleen is NOT grooming because she had no sexual intent, therefore, everyone else is wrong. What Papa Gut is inherently misunderstanding is the definition of grooming. People groom those in vulnerable situations all of the time for reasons that are not sexual. A manager in a scammy business will groom a young, poor employee to believe that the work environment is not only not toxic, but their peers are the problem. This type of grooming creates a personality that would one day take over as management and perpetuate the cycle of abuse. A leader in a religious cult may find a young man who is overwhelmed by financial issues, family issues, what have you, and groom this young man to be an over zealous convert that brings more people into the cult. A parent may groom their children to believe that making incredibly inappropriate content, whether sexual or not, is a good thing they should indulge in. Grooming someone is not an inherently sexual act, and Papa Gut is openly making a fool of himself.
She primed thousands of kids to be sexualized, that IS sexual and grooming, even if the context is a joke or live show, or she doesn't get off on it herself. She created an environment for predators, an ideal one, as most straight white christian family vloggers do. As an older cis straight white male, honestly, he shouldn't even be commenting on that aspect lol it shows he hasn't been through multiple similar scenarios like most women or lgbt people do, the sensitivity and compassion aren't there.

1) Grooming doesn't have to be sexual. Colleen cultivated a relationship with her fans in a way that they endlessly came to her defense and did work for her for free. There is definitely grooming there even if it wasn't all sexual.
2) Even giving Colleen the largest benefit of the doubt, she still has responsibility to bear for her brother's actions. She platformed him as her brother, gave him credibility as her brother, and essentially provided him access to her young fans. She might not have done it, but she has some responsibility for his actions.
3) I'm currently in an MSW program, and Papa Gut's comments are ridiculous. There are many different kinds of social workers, and social workers are not inherently good or have a great perspective of mental health. I'm in a clinical social work program and when I get my license I'll have the ability to diagnose and counsel, but that doesn't mean that everyone in my program, including myself is infallible. There are people in my program who think pretty awful things and express them readily, and I wish I could vet the folks in my own program let alone the whole profession. This defense does nothing for me and acting as though it gives him any sort of credence is ridiculous.
4) Kind of referring to my 2nd point, but again even if we give Colleen thee biggest leeway and benefit of the doubt, she still has responsibility for pretty much anything and everything that happened on her productions or watch. Cory bullying a tour member -- her responsibility! She hired Cory and his behavior was enabled by her. Fans attacking Adam, even if she didn't send them after him (which ofc she did) -- her responsibility! Frankly the level of shirking this responsibility is just absurd. I think the points she made in her ukelele video would be fine if it were not for literally everything she did, because none of those points apply to her. It's just ridiculous.

I was so confused by Ryan's comments (both on Papa Gut's video and in their video) because like....as apart of the queer community I'm well aware of the "groomer" title being thrown around by people who hate us, but at the same time it doesn't do harm to ACCURATELY call out grooming when it's happening. The fact that Ryan didn't bother to actually look up what grooming means made me lose some respect. Grooming doesn't always mean that an adult is trying to get their rocks off with a child. Grooming can be the abuse of a power dynamic between an adult and a child to get them to do whatever they say i.e. work for them for pennies or for free. It means making a child trust them and making them think that inappropriate conversations are normal which opens the door for another groomer to get further. Grooming can also happen between adults with an imbalanced power dynamic i.e. a bad boss and an employee. Also, apparently, Papa Gut never watched To Catch a Predator because there was no actual sexual contact involved with the predators caught but they were definitely grooming. He's probably the same type of man to say that male victims should be happy for the attention. Someone should investigate him pronto. RE UA-camrs hiring fans: My two cents nobody asked for, I don't think youtubers hiring from their audience is inherently a bad idea. I follow a few UA-camrs who have reached out to their audience for possible editors because there's already a familiarity with the content and "brand" that could be harder for a complete outsider to pick up on, and they've been up front with what they're looking for and the budget they have available. They're clear in wanting this to be a business relationship (between two adults) with clearly defined expectations and compensations.
Colleen wasn't hiring from her audience though. She was getting her underage fans to work for her for free, with no compensation or contract in place. That is a wildly different scenario, and it IS inherently problematic.

While there is a specific form of grooming which relates to sexual or illegal acts, the complete definition of grooming more broadly applies to training or manipulating a person to behave or think in specific way that continues to benefit and provide power and control the the groomer. I see a big similarity in the limitation of grooming to purely sexual exploitation to the former perceptions that abuse is purely physical or sexual in nature and only occurs between parents and children or between romantic partners. This popular conception made it more difficult for people who experienced abuse from different sources or psychological abuse to come forward and seen as valid. By limiting general definition of grooming and abuse to purely physical or sexual, you risk putting other victims at risk or further harm and societal shaming. This is why we add descriptors in front of the word abuse to describe the specific kind of abuse: physical abuse, psychological abuse, sexual abuse, spousal abuse, parental abuse, etc. We should do the same with grooming as grooming in itself is manipulative and abusive behavior which is one of the main tools in continuing the cycle of abuse. I say this as someone who was psychologically abused by a sports coach and who has had to deal with people not believing or belittling my story because I was never physically assaulted… in fact, my abuse has a lot of similarities to Adam’s and Johnny’s abuse at the hands of Colleen and Kory and it horrifying to see people (cough cough papa gut…) continuing to minimize the damage. :/

I remember not too long ago I truly felt like Papa Gut was someone who cared about victims genuinely and was able to show his emotions openly in that regard. The idea papa gut thinks hiring fans is a great idea is unbelievable. I can mainly speak on the animation and art end of things because thats more of what i went to school for but its common to hear people talk about how they were fans of shows they applied to work for and how it often put them in a spot to be taken advantage of because they were so willing to overlook blatant mistreatment or warning signs until they were looking back on it. You may be passionate about something but that also is what makes you so much more susceptible to having that taken advantage of.

25:43 idk how it is where adam is but saying to someone 'get therapy' isnt at all beneficial when you live in a situation where its difficult to do so. ive been trying to get therapy on and off for a few years and for that reason id never tell someone to do seek help because its so disheartening to do so and just be put on a months long wait list and talk to someone who thinks youre lying about your mentall illness so you have to try again and go through another few months on a waitlist. Its easy to say seek therspy when youre in a financial or social situation to easily do so
papa gut took the biggest L. A lot of people who haven’t condemned Colleen are minimizing what she did. grooming is not always sexual, you can literally look up the definition. Let’s say she didn’t…she still sent lingerie to a minor. she sent porn to a minor. she asked weird ass questions to minors. she told actual children about her adult problems and vented to them. she used kids on stage and put them in gross situations. she made gross jokes in videos targeted towards kids.
I always remembered while I was in school my teachers being adamant about not interacting with them on socials, adding them on Facebook, etc. and you explained and made the perfect analogy tbh.

I'm gonna put my two cents in. As someone with a degree in child development, and a former CPS worker, GROOMING DOES NOT HAVE TO BE FOR SEXUAL INTENT. We see grooming in labor trafficking (i.e., using Adam for free labor as a minor) we see it in parents grooming children to take on mature roles (i.e., parentification), we see it in domestic violence perpetrators grooming their kids into participating in spousal abuse. Grooming by definition is not sexual, nor did Adam EVER state he believed Colleen was trying to sexually abuse him (although her regularly showing him pornography and normalizing sexual conversations makes that questionable at best). Papa Gut made a bad take and doubled down and is now crying like a baby because a lot of people who are more educated than he is, are telling him he is wrong.
