Great video, earned my subscription. I personally think L.A. Noire is the most ambitious game ever made, even more considering it ran on 7th gen hardware.
After more than 10 years no other game comes close to this level of accuracy on portraying a real place and with such an innovative gameplay and interesting, mature plot and characters. I completely disagree with you on the need for LA Noire to be set at night. Visually, the game has a lot more in common with movies like Chinatown and LA Confidential and those movies are very brightly lit and have a lot of it set during the day. Noir doesn't need to be set during the night just to have the tone.

This was a fantastic review of a game that made technological breakthroughs for its time. I have to agree with a lot of the commenters here: the producers built an incredible world that you can’t do anything in. A living, breathing city teeming with life, corruption and bountiful sunshine, but the absence of mini games, shops, or general earthly delights can turn this world bland on multiple replays.

One of my all time favourite games ever but one area that they clearly dropped the ball was to completely leave out Bunker Hill avenue and it’s Victorian Mansions. Plenty of photographs are in circulation of the castle, the salt box etc, indeed bunker hill in total was the biggest flaw from its inaccurate topography to its missing buildings (The Melrose, Zelda, Alta Vista etc). With all that said LA Noire was very close to a masterpiece and a game that is still a pleasure to play even in 2024

Well done, I’ve always wondered how a sequel would be set in 1979 NYC right between the crime world of the 1970s into the 1980s, got stories such as the Frank Lucas and dope and all the civil unrest of the time. Could go well with the Taxi Driver aesthetic too with the dark moody jazzy NYC world in the background

I stated something similar in a post on another video on LA Noire. There should be 3 direct titular games. The 2nd should be in the mid 1960s(Vietnam conflict protests, Left wing activism, Civil Rights movement, Watts riots), and the 3rd during 1992 featuring a Black detective(Crack cocaine epidemic. Gang violence. Rodney King riots.).
A spin off should be based in 1970s New York cop in the Organized crime unit, fighting various crime syndicates(Mob, Black groups, Latin groups, Irish and Triads.). The 1977 New York blackout should be featured along with the government corruption, mass heroin addiction, the son of Sam murderer, and social break down of the decade in the city.

I think some of your criticisms are simply the result of doing an accurate version of LA, not just in look but in feel. The streets do feel oddly deserted and sparsely populated. People frequently walk around saying weird things. It's a deeply lonely city, something I think La La Land also captures perfectly.

    • @WitchKing-Of-Angmar
      @WitchKing-Of-Angmar 6 місяців тому +2

I mean it's absolutely nothing like the late 1940s in Hollywood considering 4-10 cars were light beige/gray, a color that is inconsistent. I know that seems like a background fact, but it really affects the look of a city and is by far the most important feature in any city. Strange how there are no vehicles under 1937 really.
I hate the dirty look of the city in the game, which was pristine at the time (the great depression hardly affected any major city).

This video was first recommended to me a few weeks ago. Watching it now for the second time. And I think I've just realised what made it so addictive to me - must be the noir tone of the presentation. The way "Behind Locked Doors" part begins (at 21:50 mark) with the narrator stating that "[the in-door areas] *mostly* make up for the monotony of the overworld" - there is something very noir about it to me.
Highly enjoyable content, as is the game. Thank you for putting your heart into it!
P.S. A well-known interesting tidbit is that one of L.A. Noire sources of inspiration seems to be L.A. Quartet, a sequence of four crime fiction novels, by James Ellroy.

*the only video game set in the 1940s. I don't even count Mafia 1-2 because they just did not do it well at all. For some reason Mafia 2 missed the idea of the mid 1930s and only implemented early 1930s models mixed with 1940-1941 models randomly thrown in. Then you have Mafia 1 (the remake), with it's onslaught of inaccuracies and purposefully old feel they applied to it. No metallic paint option which implies that research was scarce on Automobiles. I despise, DESPISE how the beginning in 1930 is represented by "a car my mother could have bought 20 years ago.", a Model A esk taxi, and a german roadster... Nevermind the 45 Sedan companies from Buick to Studebaker, Nash, Marmon, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Lincoln, Chevrolet, Gardner, Hudson, and Paige and really just too many to count. They really tried to make the message of "oh, this is a pre good car era, there was only jalopies before 1930."

The soullessness of the game world _accurately_ reflects the soullessness of Los Angeles.
And, no, you _wouldn't_ find a lot of Chinese people in China Town in the 1940s because they would have been removed during the yellow peril era fifty years before. Some might have worked there, but they weren't allowed to _live_ there.

As a native Angelino, while it's fun to play in GTA 5's stylized SoCal of the present day, it's just as much fun to go back in time and play in yesteryear. I enjoyed being able to see familiar landmarks where they ought to be, and be able to navigate by them (although some I had hoped to be there, that should have been, weren't). In a lot of points it felt like you were playing a playable version of the film, "L.A. Confidential", what with the underlying police corruption, drug trafficking, sex scandals and even a tall, lanky Irish police chief full of cliché "boyo" phrases who I fully expected to be the Big Bad (but wasn't).

The thing about it though. For me at least. This game gets a pass for that. Mostly because like you said The main focus isn't the open world. More so the story ends scenes.

Driving was so important in the game, but they screwed that up. I played Mafia more than 20 years ago and I loved the cars. The game was set almost 2 decades earlier, but that doesn't matter. The cars felt very good and realsitic. They had weight, you heard and felt the engine and they were shiny. Cars in LA noire were almost wieghtless and the steering felt much too fast. It didn't fel like you were driving real cars at all. So the whole driving part became uninteresting and it didn't matter which car you drove.

This was such a great video, but one thing that I personally think would improve the videos is the removal of acknowledging that videos are part of a series of even videos at all. I think a lot of things that you splice into sections of your scripts like telling us that “similar videos are soon to come” and that we should “like and subscribe for similar content” would work much better during a more off the cuff end-card that’s very clearly separated from the main video. Without that stuff, I know for certain that I’d be so much more sucked into your videos and immersed. Your scripts are beautifully written and have so much potential, on top of all that you’ve already done.

    • @Ryan-Petre

Thanks man. For the record I agree. I've decided to drop the idea of a unified series, as well as the whole "like, comment, subscribe" routine. Partially cuz it's cliche, and partially because I don't have a good track record of actually delivering on said promised "new videos" lol

They basically watched LA Confidential and loved it! The characters are almost cut out from the film pretty much. Obviously they're (Phelps and co.) composites and not quite as dark as the LA Confidential coppers though! 🙂
Right down the Irish police commissioner boss!
I love the look and feel of the game, it's very much a satisfying time-warp into the Los Angeles of the 1940s & 50s...

Chinatown and L.A. Confidential are both great movies that were direct inspirations to L.A. Noire. Same with The Naked City, Out of the Past, Sweet Smell of Success, and The Third Man.
I would also highly recommend the books in the L.A. Quartet by James Ellroy. They are some of the best hardboiled fiction out there on top of being set in the exact time period and inspiring this game.
