Well i passed it as a 5-6 years old kid, still a stessful and painful moment. The guy in that video probably died few minutes later, because all of his turtles are so low at the end of this stage lol. To be honest i never finished that game i was stuck most of the time with the technodrome fight and if i managed to win, i was dying in the begining of next level with the space foot clan, it was the same for my older brother. Games were so hard and punitive in that Nes era, games were already becoming far easier with the next generation of consoles, it was still a correct difficulty, i mean it was stil rewarding to finish them in my opinion. It's probably what was funny with that era if you think about it, people making games were probably not understanding themselves what they were creating, sometimes they made difficult and punishing games like this one for no reasons, probably thinking kids were smarter than adult with that new technology so if it was though for them to pass a level, kids would have done it easily xD This game is mainly memorable because of that difficulty, games of nowadays are made by people who are dumbing down their games so even the dumbest kid might go to the end without improving himself (ex: in most recent Platformers from Nintendo, if you die too much, the game ask you if you wanna active a cheat mode to control a character that cannot be hit by foes). What a soulles era.

I would go to the arcade with my cousin to play TMNT Arcade Version, Final Fight, rent a Blockbuster video (Bill and Ted or Van Damme/Segal/Arnold), come home watch the movie, then Wonder Years, and then attempt the water level after everyone went to bed (Uncle/Aunt). @@bojangles5232 There is no way to get past the double shock points without taking damage because they are too far apart to make the swim before the second of the pair comes on and too close together to hide between them. They should have either halved the distance between the shock lines or doubled it.

Seriously!! Me too. I used to freak out when the time was running down and the music was speeding up. This youtube video is literally the first time i've ever visually seen this level beaten, and the dude who made it barely came out of it. So that gives me a little comfort to know that I was right in line with most other 7-8 year olds who owned this game.

The music of this stage through a big wooden CRT in the 90's was just another experience. The sound design of the NES Konami games of that era was memorable.

As much as I hated playing this level at like 8-10 years old it gives me epic nostalgia seeing it now and still makes me nervous watching it when the music picks up at the end
@ForestWhitakeronACID The controls arent too open. You have to press stuff with perfect accuracy at times with little to no room for error. If might just be 2 buttons, but the spaces they expect you to cross are damn near impossible with the given controls.
I remember I could get through this fairly consistently, but you definitely needed to have memorized all the locations of the bombs and have Turtles with enough health that you can afford to take damage along the way. That said my health was usually so depleted at the start of Level 3 that I basically had to die and use a continue to proceed, so they kind of got me after all.
In all honesty, it's not that bad once you keep practicing. Wanna play a super difficult game? Try NES Battletoads. Level 11 Clinger Winger is almost impossible.

Nearly the best of all time (for the NES) TETRIS!, metroid, DOUBLE DRAGON, bubble BOBBLE, ZELDA, Burgertime! CASTLEVANIA, super mario bros. 1 2 and 3, NINJA GAIDEN, shadowgate, PAC-MAN, River City Ransom, Maniac Mansion, CONTRA and some of Mega Man 2 and 3's music also come to mind (when thinking of exemplary musical compositions) to name a few... This is as far as I got with this game when I played it as a child in 1990. This level is technically winnable but whoever designed it is a sadist. The player must accept that all four turtles will be near death and the timer will almost run out before this level is complete. When I played I was afraid to receive damage and I was worried about time running out. I realize now that in order to beat this level you must be willing to die. It’s a good life lesson because it teaches kids to focus on accomplishing their goals no matter what the cost. I was ten years old. I wasn’t emotionally equipped to make life or death decisions. I bet the kids who beat this game are all financially successful now and happy with their lives. Oh how I envy them.

To me this level was the last level. Onto the next game
This is as far as I got with this game when I played it as a child in 1990. This level is technically winnable but whoever designed it is a sadist. The player must accept that all four turtles will be near death and the timer will almost run out before this level is complete. When I played I was afraid to receive damage and I was worried about time running out.
I realize now that in order to beat this level you must be willing to die. It’s a good life lesson because it teaches kids to focus on accomplishing their goals no matter what the cost. I was ten years old. I wasn’t emotionally equipped to make life or death decisions. I bet the kids who beat this game are all financially successful now and happy with their lives. Oh how I envy them.

It’s also so strange how it suddenly just ramps in difficulty up so disproportionately compared to what came before.
Ugh. Watching this is an exercise in frustration, even 35 years later.
This is the only game in my life I cried when I got to this stage 😂
I remember I used to have dreams about what the rest of this game must have been like because I could never get past this ridiculous level.
i got anxiety as a 6 year old playing this.. .and anxiety didn't exist back then.
My friend just clocked this game after 30 years lol
