The fact that so many people “could” be the killer is the point I think. We’re supposed to feel like someone killed Tony because Tony feels like he’s about to be shot and he can’t be sure. That feeling will live with him forever.

I like the idea that "it doesn't matter" - we saw it all. Everything had unfolded for Tony and however long his life, he would spend the rest of it looking over his shoulder.

We followed Tony from rose to ultimate fall. He’s dead so it doesn’t matter to him who killed him.
@@inyourwifesas1033 There is ZERO evidence of that. The whole point of the ending is that he can never be sure when his life is over. Interpreting the ending as Tony dying completely undermines that grim prospect.
"There's 2 endings for a guy like me. High profile guy. Dead, or in the can." That statement right there is all you need to know about the ending. Even if he wasn't shot dead, the FBI was pretty much ready to move in on him, which probably would have ended with him in prison for the rest of his life.
And even if not the Fbi would have likely never stopped in their pursuit.
Carlo son got arrested and they decided to flip on tony.so yes basically the end is dead or in jail. We as fans wouldn't be happy seeing either. Looking back now i think patsy probably had something to do with it.

I finished it only yesterday. The ending scene, the music, the coming together of the family, the parking mess up, the lighting of the diner, all of it gives chills, feels very morbid in a way.
no one kills him, right after the last episode ends a dozen assassins run in the diner and Tony put them all in a head lock and gave them a noogie one by one

Junior came in and announced he was faking his dementia the whole time, and took control.
The members only jacket was also worn by the NY soldier who shot Silvio. It does not suggest an inside job, it just suggests he is indeed the killer who dispatches Tony. I think New York and the surviving members of the Soprano family (namely Paulie and Patsy) worked together to get rid of both Tony and Phil, whose dispositions were now resulting in chaos and lost money. Eventually, NY absorbs the Jersey crew, which was their goal since Johny Sack moved to the neighborhood.

It’s topped off with Paulie being asked to run the crew he believes is cursed. He was 100% serious with the supernatural stuff, and could have seen killing Tony as a way to save himself. There also little hints Chase scattered all over the serious, like the dream where Silvio says our true enemy has yet to reveal himself, right before it cuts to Tony shooting Paulie.

Loved the video and analysis. Another thing which someone else mentioned is that when Chris was shot he saw a vision of his father telling him to warn Tony about 3 o clock. That scene is the reason I’ve always felt like Tony saw the hit coming. The guy looks suspicious enough for T to notice him and he literally walks to the restroom just like Michael. And with that scene in mind, I feel like Tony survived either by seeing it coming or AJ protected him.
I actually think that Paulie, Patsy and Butchy all worked together to kill Tony. Patsy for revenge and because one of his family members got pinched and he feared to worst for him, Paulie because he wanted to be boss of the family and because he feared that Tony would eventually kill him after the boat incident and Butchy because he wanted Tony (an effective opponent) gone and replaced with someone he could keep under his thumb. Together they set up the hit. Patsy found out through Maedow where Tony was going to be that evening and Butchy found a man to do the hit. Paulie promised to make sure that this didn't escalate back into war after taking over the family. In the end, the Jersey family effectively became the "Jersey crew" under New York. Officially still a separate family but practically just a crew in the New York family.

Patsy is the likely suspect. Tony not only killed his brother, he talked down to him constantly, treating him like a servant, and even slapped his head. The middle of the war with NY was the perfect time to have it done.

They tried this before when aj chickened out of killing junior. Honestly it’s more like the end of a dynasty where the family leaves once and for all. After seeing tony gunned down in front of them i think Carmela would go somewhere and probably take her kids even if they’re a little older.
I always tought that it didn't reall matter if Tony died that time or not. The way I see it the finale tells us that there's not going to be an happy ending for Tony's life; maybe non that time, maybe in 1 year, maybe in 10, but Tony has no hope for redemption or of escaping violence.

I always had the idea the guy wasn't connected anyone, he was someone who's life was either ruined directly or indirectly from Tony's crew and this was his revenge.
I think you're right, because then it plays out like a Greek tragedy. In "Carlitos Way" the main character lets a killer go because he wants to start being a better person, but Carlito is in a violent criminal business, and near the end of the movie, just as he is about to realize his goals...the guy he had let go pops-up out of nowhere and shoots him. This is a key element to Greek tragedies where some decision you made in the past ends up having big consequences in your future. Tony has spoons' twin brother killed early in the series, and at the very end, even though almost his entire crew is decimated, he is happy because he still has his family. Just as he is contemplating witness protection and a new life for him and his family, bada bing. Not only is "bada bing" the name of Tony's place of business, it's what Sonny Corleone says to Michael in the Godfather. "What, you think this is the army where you shoot them a mile away. You got to get them close like this and Bada-Bing!"
Excellent summary! It's been a while since I saw Carlito's Way, but I can see the Sopranos ending being similar, as well as to Greek tragedies.

My theory: After NY got wind of Carlo flipping, in addition to all of the beef with Phil (how he was whacked in front of his family and Tony demanding restitution for Bobby getting whacked), NY decided Tony was a liability to flip and put a hit on him.
Tony had never spent time in the can, not really, and NY didn't have much respect for him or NJ. Instead of risking Tony flipping to save himself after Carlo flipped, which could potentially bring down all of NJ and a good chunk of one of the Five Families, NY decided to just get rid of Tony.
Tony had already shown to buck the normal mob rules by seeing a therapist, not handing over his cousin, and how he dealt with Vito. I could honestly see Tony flipping.

Furio had the motive and the means to carry out a hit on Tony. But Furio genuinely liked Carmella. Consequently, I don't think he would have put her through the trauma that killing her husband, in front of her eyes, and children, would have created.

That's what I always thought, that the assassin was a son of someone Tony killed years ago (in the 80's, MO jacket?). There is a theme of the son avenging his father's murder with Christopher killing his father's killer and AJ's attempt at being Michael Corleone, and of course Tony's killer goes to the bathroom a al Michael Corleone. That said, if it was someone in Tony's circle I always thought it was Patsy, which would show that Patsy was the true G of the whole show! For nearly 10 years of "Yes Tony, whatever you say Tony, here's your cut Tony", waiting for the right time to strike; Janice said her mom was like a snake hiding in the grass waiting for a time to strike. And this would be a perfect time to strike, the blame would go to New York and no one would suspect Patsy since his son was engaged to Meadow.

Ive always thought the writers purposely avoided giving any clear indications of who did it and why, beyond the guy's appearance and dress telling us it was someone in the mafia. We see the story from Tony's POV and of course that POV ceases to exist when he dies so we never find out, I think that's intentional.

Pasty had a motive and so did Paulie, but neither would have done this without outside backing from Butchie. They simply didn't have the ambition to take over as head of the family. It was either them working with Butchie, or it was Butchie on his own. They hired that woman to seduce AJ and got an outside hitman.

Butchie had it in for Tony. Wanted to wipe out the NJ management and do business with whatever was left. He used Tony to get rid of Phil, then erased Tony.

But New York didn't do hits that way. Not one in the whole series. They send teams, they were masked in some way etc. And of course they would have send a pro to kill a boss, not the nervous menbers only guy everyone could describe to the cops, because he sat there for minutes unmasked. The jacket leads the way, it was a relative of eugene or a plot by patsy.
If you look at how the members only guy walks into the toilet, its like an ode to the Godfather when Michael whacks sollozo and the police chief in the diner. Makes perfect sense that the guy walked back out and shot him as things like this were done several times in the show.

I was caught off guard by the sudden ending but now I think it is probably the most fitting ending for The Sopranos. There was no resolution, no coming on top, Tony throughout the series was given chance after chance to come to his senses and become the man he thought he was, but at the moment where he almost understood where the path he followed would lead him to, his journey led him to its final destination.

About a week after the finale, I read an interview with Steve Perry & David Chase where Steve Perry said “everything you need to know about the finale is in the lyrics (of Don’t Stop Believin)” and David Chase agreed. Steve Perry refused to grant the rights to use the song unless he knew exactly what the outcome was, so David Chase told him in confidence right before the finale aired. In his 2019 interview with Dan Rather, Steve Perry confirmed this again.
Personally, I think everyone that has seen the finale has latched on to the idea Tony was killed because of the way it was filmed, but there’s no connection there based on what David Chase & Steve Perry said. It was filmed to give us a false sense of paranoia to throw us off. Anyone who’s ever gone into a public place after blowing a few rails will know exactly what I mean about a false sense of paranoia.
So dont stop believing is the show telling us that Tony somehow lives this and to believe it?

To me all the way though the seasons of sopranos, it shows how the mob is all about loyalty to the face & ruthlessly unloyal behind the back. All these guys had it coming, it almost doesn’t really matter who did it or why. The only way out of “the life” is death. A lot of Tony’s decisions in critical situations were made for his own gain & to suit him when if he had followed the rules of the mob he would have done things differently & more fairly. He made a lot of his own guys resent him. Especially with junior out of the picture & aj not grown up following his dad into the business, it was pretty easy for the soprano family to fall.
If there ever was a scenario where Tony did live, he himself would believe that he’d be better off dead because he would be living a life of complete paranoia, watching each person that came through the door or passed by him, knowing one day that he had it coming for the very bullets that would eventually hit him by someone he knew or not.

Am I the only one that fell in love with the scene where they try to whack Tony in season 1 and a bullet hits the juice bottle in Tony’s hand and he looks surprised and at the same time drops it? All in slow motion. You can see it a lot clearer in the actual episode than in this clip.
I always found it strange how when christopher made the gay joke about Vito , Patsy was the only who laughed

Also, people seem to forget that Tony even since the beginning would have a stroke of some kind and faint, usually due to high stress, whose to say he didn't simply have his last episode and died right on that seat, I'm sure every time he fainted it looked black just like that...typically in movie writing if you can't find the answer at the end it's probably in the beginning, the whole show started with him falling over fainting, and that's how it ended... Just another regular day, and his last faint
That's a great perspective and I never thought of it that way. The level of anxiety and adrenaline from the moment the guy walked in and then walked past him. He probably felt overwhelmed and kicked over right there. That's crazy but realistic.

Not true. He simply gives us Tony's perspective. As people walk in the diner the bell rings and t sees the person walking in. When meadow walks in the bell rings and it goes black. The black is all tony sees as he was shot at the same time meadow walks in. When tony and dr. Milfi talked about what t thinks it well be like he say " nothin just black not cinematic at all" and there you have it.

Maybe the guy in the jacket was related to the guy who hung himself, a brother or cousin or something who always rejected the life and who was probably an average Joe. The wearing of the jacket could have been a tribute to commemorate his relative while he killed Tony, the man who he might have felt was responsible for what ultimately happened to him.
It was AJ that ordered the hit. Remember in season 5, he threatened to kick Tony's ass.

It is a cruel irony that James died so young and so unexpectedly. One can only wonder whether this thought entered Tony's mind in his last minutes.
There are a lot of options. I have always believed that the other NY families (Mongano, Teresi....) might have looked down on the increasing violence between Lupertazzi and Soprano, and they may have felt that Tony disrespected "this thing" when Phil's head was crushed (even though it was an accident). They might have hit Tony just to be done with the violence, period. Butch himself may have sanctioned the hit, also on the logic that while he may have given up Phil, he didn't intend for him to be mutilated. Butch knew what was done to Vito S, for example, so he might have thought that Tony was making a statement with Phil's head-crushing. Other options are that things happened so quickly and fluidly that word didn't get out yet that the war was over, so Members Only guy thought he was free and clear to kill Tony. Dark horse theories are also that Paulie set it up after Sil and Bobby were hit: maybe he made a deal to escape that violence since he previously claimed he made it out of the 70's by the skin of his nuts. Paulie, after all, was at the meet with Butch and could see which way things were going. Arguments for an inside job are that the entire family was destroyed, anyway: Paulie was the only one left standing. There was no N Jersey crew left!
He and his family actually were given a new life and identities by the Feds and he became Kevin Finnerty (from his time in a coma) and then a whole new series… “The Finnerty’s”
The Finnerty's would be a sitcom about an ex-mafioso in the witness protection program. Each week, Tony would have to stop himself from killing one of his neighbors when their dog pooped on his lawn or a neighbor stole his newspaper.

Now if you combine a scene with the Members Only guy coming out of the crapper, holding a gun, coming up behind Tony to put one in his dome and then Tony collapses and dies from a massive heart attack. Ooof, marone! That would be golden. Cut to confused looking Members Only guy quickly exiting the diner while Tony dies from heart failure while his family looks on impotent.

Also, early in season 6 its mentioned that Tony's favorite scene in any movie is when Michael kills the guys that tried to kill his dad. Michael emerges from the bathroom and then does the hit. Just like the guy in the diner
The major clue is, New York did all their planning in a beauty shop. When Paulie comes back he offers the crew haircutting scissors, and Chase did that to show you he was with New York planning Tony’s hit.
Occam’s razor is that it was most likely one of the other New York families retaliating because Tony had a boss killed.

I think it's left unresolved for good purpose. We had been shown examples of every result already: Even if Tony isn't killed instantly like Bobby, or made a vegetable like Silvio, even if he lives through it all like Paulie he'll still wind up pissing his pants in a nursing home, not knowing who he was, like Uncle Junior. It's a rather hopeless message, but I liked it.
Best case scenario he’s alone and old, and no one gives a shit about him or things he’s done. For larger than life guys hell is irrelevance. It’s why the Irishman wrote that book, tragically no one gives a fuck about Hoffa any more.
This is a great video, but Butchie and NY finishing the job always made sense to me-though I could totally see Patsy lending a helping hand in that. Butchie always had it out for Tony and he was the earliest and most enthusiastic proponent for taking Tony out. When he had his cell-phone walk-and-talk with Phil after Bobby and Silvio were hit, but not Tony, Phil clearly blamed Butchie for the incomplete work, and then he brusquely asked for a sit-down before hanging up on Butchie. At that point he probably figured that his head would roll when it was all over if Phil the hothead remained boss.
Of course Butchie could have just hit Tony at their peace-meeting, but why risk keeping Phil around just to face his wrath later? So, Butchie betrayed Phil and let Tony do the dirty work of taking him out, with Butchie there waiting to take the helm. Tony would naturally let his guard down with Phil gone because he felt secure in his deal with NY. At this point, why wouldn't Butchie just finish the original plan by hitting Tony? The Soprano crew was hollowed out by Tony's bad leadership and this last war with NY, and it was just waiting to be swallowed by a bigger fish sooner or later. Patsy could totally have been involved for all of the reasons discussed in this video, and since it would probably be easier for NY to have a...well, a patsy to have as a puppet to do business with.
This is the strongest possibly imo. Butchie played both phil and tony so he could rise out on top
the scary thing about the eugine theory is that you will start to question if tonys death was as brutal and ruthless as the guy eugine killed in that restaurant and the more disturbing question is if carmella and aj died too

David Chase said Tony wasn’t killed at the end. The reason the screen went black was because fans cheered Tony for season after season, and then in the final season they wanted him to get whacked.
In an interview, Chase refers to the final scene as the "death scene." When the interviewer points out that he called it the death scene, Chase paused, and then cursed.
David Chase also talked about the death episode (his words) in an interview saying he originally had the idea of Tony driving into a tunnel the screen cuts to black. He changed his mind & went with the death episode we saw.
That's not what he said. I think he meant Tony is still alive in the sense that the show is available on lots of streaming platforms. He said the screen went black because he didn't want to show Tony with his exploded head in a bowl of onion rings, or words to that effect.

Christopher says 3 o’clock was what he was told when he was hospitalized. Everything was in 3’s. Phil was killed and in his last scene, there were only 3 survivors, his wife and two grandkids. Tony being killed leaves his wife and two kids at the scene. Silvio took off with those two girls he was sitting with when the guy across from him was killed. Meadow had to parallel park 3 times before getting it right. But in reality, there was only Paulie and Patsy left of his crew. I don’t remember seeing Patsy after he ran off. Tony had to have died. And the viewers too. They had mentioned it a few times in the series of how people go in 3’s.
David Chase has said he’s still alive, and he’s also said he’s dead. Although I’ve seen videos explaining in detail why he’s dead I don’t think we can assume that’s 100% certain. That’s kind of the beauty of the ending, it’s truly what you want it to be.

I believe it was a combination Butch, Patsy, and Paulie. Butch had to give up Tony in exchange for Phi to appease NY. Butch reached out to Patsy and Paulie to have Tony killed. Patsy replaced Tony with Paulie as the under boss. Paulie was a snake who was the hidden enemy and Patsy never got over Tony killing his brother. Tony was essentially a dead man after the war with Phil. For Butch it was purely business at that point. However it was more personal for Patsy and Paulie was a traitor. NY was ready for a change and Tony had been on borrowed time for awhile, starting with Uncle Jr. shooting him and Tony’s near death experience.
Tony was marked in that season. Paulie wasn't the same after that Florida trip so it wouldn't take much convincing from New York to get him to turn his back while Tony gets clipped. If Butchie would turn on Phil (who he liked) then he wouldn't hesitate to make a fake deal with Tony, luring him into a trap. Butchie even said they should "absorb the whole f*ckin thing!".
My opinion? New York clips the top 3 and absorbs the whole Family but leaves Paulie in place to Captain their newly acquired crew. As for the trigger man? New York has access to countless hitmen that Tony wouldn't recognize and as a result the last meal for a man that often ate like a Pharaoh was onion rings and Carm and AJ got to experience the same thing Sil did when the Torch was shot at dinner. Sil suffered the same fate as Joe Columbo, who he mentions in season 4 during the Columbus Day episode. Sil gets shot, goes into a coma and dies years later
They filmed that scene to make it seem that way but they wanted that show open ended so they could make some future content down the line given how popular the show had become. But a continuation is impossible now that James has passed away and that’s why the death in that diner seems so certain now.
Whatever it is, it is the end. The show starts out, "lately, I'm getting the feeling I came in at the end. The best is over." And winds up with, "Don't stop believing."

I have watched several UA-cam videos about this. The most plausible scenario is as follows: Pauly and Patsy plotted to kill Tony in cahoots with Butchie's crew and put Patsy as boss. Several items indicate this:
1) Pauly and Patsy meet a hitman in the Bing. We think it is for Phil but then they refuse to discuss close to the stage and want to discuss in the bathroom. The discussion is never shown. Pauly and Patsy stand side by side at the urinals, when Pauly is done, Pauly pats Patsy (no pun intended) and says: "It is all yours" , Pauly walks away and Patsy looks like he is pondering as he hesitates to flush. Patsy would not have had this reaction had Pauly been talking about the urinal.
2) The mystery of how the hitman knew where Tony would be that night. Either Rhiannon, AJ's girlfriend is a NY plant or Meadow told her boyfriend. The problem with the latter is why would her bf casually tell his dad?
its not a mystery how the hitman would know, paulie or patsy in passing convo would ask any plans tonight T? and he would mention im going to x for food with the family, then they would ring the hitman he can plant the gun then kill tony

Butchie is the most obvious. He ties up all loose ends with Tony and Phil gone. If he's willing to betray his own guy Phil, then he's certainly willing to renege on his deal with Tony (after all, Tony had so many enemies that no one could precisely pin it on Butchie). Butchie gains the most as the last-man-standing after the war ends. He no longer has to worry about the reckless antics of Phil or Tony, and he likely goes from underboss to boss. If Patsy wanted Tony dead, he could have done so earlier. The scene where he doesn't take the shot indicates that he can't go through with it. Is he really gonna pay out of his own pocket to hire a hitman to kill his boss, after his enemies nearly killed him and Silvio? No way Patsy can trust Phil's people at this point. It's too dangerous. Also, I think the significance of the Members Only jacket is only to show that one cannot escape the life and that Tony is indeed about to be killed. (Great catch with the restroom component paralleling the infamous Godfather hit).

David Chase has been all over the map with his answers over the years in my opinion but I distinctly remember an interview he was in about a year after the show ended and he was saying that he was surprised there were so many questions about the ending. He said that in his mind everything was there to figure out everyone's questions.
Yeah, in my other video about what happened to the Russian, Chase is even more all over the map, and just as annoyed at the audience, saying things like, "Why can't there be any mystery? Does everything need to be solved?" To me, we don't see him get killed, so whether or not the creators wanted that to happen, it's still always going to be up to interpretation of the viewer.

Butchie used the model girl Rian that AJ met at the rehab center. Her poster was in the barbershop when Butchie and the New York family were discussing wacking Tony's crew. Rian is the only person outside of the Soprano family that knew where Tony and the others were going to eat at because Carmela said it to AJ while she was sitting right there. Remember Tony was in hiding at that time so no one else would've just known where he was going to be without inside knowledge. I thought it was somebody close to Eugene or his wife at first but the member only jacket could be symbol for the mafia code in general or a symbol that the guy with the jacket is made or mafia associated.

I still love that scene in Tony's living room when Patsy gives the nastiest eye roll to Tony refilling his glass that final episode. I always wonder what happened to Meadow in this scene since she is in the way of Members Only Guy's escape.

In the scene where Patsy is over for coffee in the last episode with meadow and patrick, patsy gives tony the stare down after tony grills him about his son and then insists on getting patsy. There's a lot of contempt and hate in his look.
Then, patsy's wife takes a look at the bottom of the plate to see what type it was. I don't think this implies that the wife knew about the murder plot, but I think patsy told her he was getting a big-time "bump" soon and making a lot more money, and she liked the plates and wanted to know what type they were so she could get them herself when they started making way more.
Both of these things I think are big time clues into why it's Patsy, and probably Patsy realistically working with New York to get revenge for the fucked up way Phil was killed and his body mutilated. Getting murdered in front of his entire family was probably their version of an eye for an eye there.
I agree, and I included that death stare on the couch in the video when I mentioned Patsy, it is a look so full of contempt. And definitely agreed on the clues as well.
