THX 1138: The Future is Now | Movie Review

THX 1138 explained. In this THX 1138 review, we look at George Lucas's vision of the future before he made Star Wars. I compare and contrast the dystopian future in the movie with the dystopian present we tell ourselves we aren't living in, complete with the AI takeover, ChatGPT, and our own versions of Bug Brother. I theorize what messages we can take from this movie and how to understand its ...

    Excellent list. I had never heard of the last, the dark 2019 version, I'll have to try and find it. Me and my brother binge multiple versions of the story each year. We do hold the Mr. Magoo version quite highly. The only significant one you missed is the Patrick Stewart version. Check it out.

    I think it's the Albert Finney one where his wife drops her wedding ring onto the scales with money on the other side and it doesn't shift them. Lovely little visual trick to shoe how little monetary value there is in something with such intense human value.

    My favorite by a long stretch is the George C. Scott version. First off, Marley is terrifying. When he unties the rag holding his jaw shut, it chills me to the bones, only outdone when he reties it later, snapping his teeth together and going transparent. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is also high on the creepy-meter; the swinging-rusty grate sounds that signifies his "speaking" is absolutely chilling. And Scott absolutely nails the redemption scene. I love this film!

    Throughout the series, the audience were insiders with an intimate view into Tony's life. At the final moment the audience are outsiders who don't know anything. Intentionally or not, it reminds us that we're not actually a part of that violent and alien world.

    Butchie did it. He played everyone to get power. He played the NY Crew against Rusty, Phil against Doc, stirred the pot on Phil vs Tony, sold Phil out to Tony. He kept calling Jersey a glorified crew.

      Nice to see Hicks on a list. I thought his range was phenomenal, one of the most prominent changes in character from the start to the end. Too bad that many audiences will not give it a fair shake because the movie is so old and admittedly flawed in some ways, but the acting is great.

    NY had him killed. They knew he was vulnerable to rats and the feds were getting close to arrest. From their perspective, NJ was a mess, too many deaths surrounding Tony and too many rats. They wouldve already chosen a new crew to work with.

  • @andrewgardner8972
    @andrewgardner8972 11 днів тому

    Tony Soprano was screwed either way because he was a dead man by the New York mob or because he was under indictment for his crimes by the FBI and justice department. If Tony hadn’t died, he would’ve went to jail by now like Johnny sack. And one of his guys Carlo would’ve testified before the grand jury. And Tony would’ve also found out a couple of his late friends Ray Curto and Eugene pontecorvo were also federal informants and would have been pissed at both of them. If Tony had a corrupt cop on the payroll like he did in the first season, he’d know what the FBI was up to.

    It's a great video and well made points. Personally where I disagree is using your "imagination" is basically the writer's way of saying "write the story for me" we don't pay money to write the story ourselves. Anton Shigur would get his own movie in order to "humanize" him which is done. With Tony the original ending was supposed to be he dies but they changed it so it's a moot point. Sometimes, like our memories, our imaginations are not very reliable or obfuscate the original vision of the creator. In the second example I think it was a case of there is no reason that would fit that made sense so they went with user your imagination or the explanations weren't very good because bad writing.

    • @MetaCinema
      @MetaCinema 19 днів тому

      Good points. I do prefer an ambiguous ending to other types of bad writing like deus ex machina, where instead they just pull something out of thin air to resolve it but I can see ambiguous endings as being bad writing sometimes.

    I love watching Scrooge every Christmas. It's so funny because I have a friend who hates Christmas with a "bah humbug" and all. Every year I try to bring the "Merry in Christmas" to her...I think little by little she's coming around. I feel like this Christmas is going to be extra special. Merry Christmas everybody! I’m most connected with George C Scott. He plays hard-hearted while indifferent beautifully and occasionally either privately or in the company of the spirits shows his vulnerability that he knows would destroy his political pull on trade if anyone saw him that way.

    Willow was a decent movie. NO WHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS lord of the rings. I remember seeing it in the theater and one of my friends who saw it with me was a big token fan. He was going over the endless similarities between willow and lord of the rings. I've since read the books and of course saw the movie trilogy. Willow is at best an adaptation but some would say the entire movie was a rip off lord of the rings with a tiny piece of the story of Moses thrown in.
