Poyikayil Appachchan and Anti-Caste Discourses in Kerala
Dr. K S Madhavan, Dept of History, University of Calicut.This Lecture is delivered at the Amara near Changanassery where Poyikayil Appachchan started his activities for the emancipation of cammunities who had become victims of caste- slavery.Poyikayil Appachchan or Poyikayil Sri Kumara Gurudevan was the founder of Prathyaksha Raksha Daiva Sabha [ PRDS] , a revolutionary reformer cum spiritual leader whose pathbreaking interventions in the context of modernity and social reform provided reflexivity and criticality of social action sythesising material and spiritual lifeworlds . His formulation of vocabularies and conceptual grids opened up new vistas of understanding social matrix based on graded inequality that was predicated on oppression and caste slavery to the untouchable castes and retrospective privilages and manifold forms of capitals to the so called touchable cammunities . He was able to develop discourses on embodied experiences of unfreedom and bondage reflecting on the nuences of bodily hexies and the question of identity. He recovered social memmories of historical past and textualised the self imageries of God and made it siritual spectacle on body for political present and democratic and equitable distributive justice in the future.
