Fitted alumask for about 20 years. Not too popular with domestic properties mainly because of its price. It comes bare or stove enamelled. If you live by the sea you must use stove enamelled as bare Alumask rots in sea air. If you cut the stove enamelled gutter. Always make sure you have a pot of matching touch up paint to seal the ends. Don’t let the alumask come into contact with the cast iron rainwater conductor offset. Always insert a non conductive adapter between them.

Lifts long section with one hand, between thumb and a couple of fingers: 2:29 "I'm not sure if that's cast iron?".. Nope. It's defo not cast iron, mate. Cracking job, btw, and really useful for my own situation. Cheers, pal.

We used to have a similar house in Derbyshire, but it had timber gutters. The joins always leaked, even after bitumen inside. We decided to have one piece aluminium with ogee profile made on-site out of the back of the van. It looked exactly like the wooden ones from ground level. Best of all, no maintenance or leaks. We liked the idea of keeping the original, but if modern stuff performs better and looks the same.........
    Good luck.

John Seddon We did the same on our house - looks great with no seams and nice not to have to think about the inevitable moment when a seam expands and the guttering starts leaking. I would highly recommend seamless aluminium powder coated guttering - not particularly cheap but a good product.

Definitely the best solution. Ogee guttering off a roll either copper or aluminium, no joints or leaks. Fix and forget.

I'd replace all the barge/fascias and soffits and while doing the guttering, treat the ends of the roof timbers that you have access too if possible.
I use stainless fixings for anything thats outside and going to get exposure to the weather.

Don't mix stainless steel (fasteners) and aluminium (gutters), though. The galvanic reaction will destroy them.

We used to have cast iron gutters - every spring it was a battle to make them: work - eventually to the detriment of the house becoming damp so i ended up replacing with plastic, problem solved. Not so pretty but worked. Be careful when fitting the cast iron as they are so brittle when tightening the fixing bolts. Rise/fall brackets worked well to get the correct level.
Perhaps get aluminium matching for the front.

Looks like you’ve under slate gutter brackets (hard to tell from video).. I’d replace this with the versions you put into stone wall with a rise/fall adjustment.
The under slate ones just offer no flexibility at all.. so if you knock gutters with ladder etc, you’ve got to try and bend them back up. Utter pain in the bottom.

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  4 роки тому +1

They are just flush fitted to fascia with screws. The stone versions probably wouldn’t work with depth of soffits we have. Neighbours have them on their cast but no facia or soffits.

It looks like they used to be a glass roofed Veranda out back so I can only assumed that it was like a snow bar, it’s not like it would have stopped slates unless it used to have some mesh too. 🤷‍♂️

@@TheRestorationCouple My first thought was a snow bar when I saw it - but then Somerset isn't exactly known for it's Alpine landscapes and heavy winters (although snow was more common 100+ years ago?). I'm not sure what else it could be - it doesn't look decorative, or that it would help with roof maintenance. And snow build up on the exposed side of the roof, turning to ice and falling on to a glass veranda could do a lot of damage - as that's easily a few hundred kilos.

Agree with this. If you kept wood windows then going the whole hog with cast iron makes sense. However with PC windows I think he should just go with plastic. Keep the wood boarding though. Pvc fascia is so ugly in my opinion.

Replace all of the soffits, don’t attempt to use any of the iron fixings since they will likely be rotten in the end. It’s a mess trying to pair aluminum with iron ad well.
Also, copper gutters may be your best bet. They can last as long as slate and do not rot like iron.

Tip on dirty aluminium. Don't try welding it. The heartache & technicalities of getting it right is not worth it. Are you sure you want use reclaimed cast iron gutters? Cast iron being brittle, you could end up with a problem down the road if something was to hit it during a storm. I'd probably go with the aluminium gutters if it was my house Tim. Oh, happy belated birthday.

I would definitely try and stick with some sort of metal guttering, plastic is just complete junk in comparison, the joints always leak eventually. I really like that Blachotrapez system from 'the guy in Bristol' but I suspect the half round pattern wouldn't suit the design of the house. Personally, not a fan of the ogee profile but I guess it is traditional.

Yes, it’s still the same product. Costs about twice cast iron. I think the issue with the stuff we had is that it was just hand painted so hopefully getting it powder coated will give it more longevity. Will do some sums to see what would be needed around the front. 😀
