There are often freethought style groups that meet up in many cities. I have had some great discussions on weekend chit chat get togethers with groups such as this.
The relative nature of time and the present always messed with me as a kid. It particularly bothered me that I could go to bed and perceive myself to travel forward in time instantly, whereas the same amount of time would seem to pass slowly for anyone who was awake while I was sleeping.
As the solar system travels through space it's also moving into different space with different gravity and that effects the passing of time ... So when you sense the day went by fast it actually may have but it's relative to you from your perspective of the space time you occupied at the time
I've recently thought that the dream world could somehow be us visiting the multiverse and maybe the people we see there actually exist in another dimension. Like this weird layer where all the worlds can overlap and we can visit each other, but no one knows what it truly is. They think they are just dreaming and it's all fake when perhaps it's not. The reason why time and gravity often doesn't exist in our dreams is because we could be living under the rules of another universe instead of just our own. It's mostly just a creative thought, but sleeping and dreaming really provoke some deep existential questions within me. The fact that we can shut away from our own world and time to go to completely other places with different rules, even if it's just mentally, is insane to me. It's really made me question the true limits of physics, because there's no real difference between our world and our dream worlds other than the perspectives we have of them. We discredit our abstract dream worlds as fake for no real reason other than we spend most our time in this more concrete and understood one. But what makes our dreams worlds objectively fake? We can't prove that anymore than we can prove that this one isn't some sort of stimulation or Boltzmann brain. If there is a multiverse, who knows what could potentially cause someone to go in-between universes and make connections with other worlds/life.

Once I had a dream where I discovered how to teleport. The first time I tested it out I ended up in the exact spot where an infinite amount of me teleported there at the same time. I was able to experience every other version of myself through all possible memories. I then woke up and had to lay in bed for a couple of hours just to process this very vivid dream. It messed me up.
Had a lucid dream once where I traveled to an alternate reality that was almost exactly the same as my own but there were new people and I deeveloped friendships with them over the day. I realized i wasn’t in my reality and then I started panicking because I couldn’t get back or wake up and when I woke up it messed me up for the day
I have dreams like these often and have to question what it was and I have to conclude that these weren’t just dreams and were possibly me experiencing life in an alternate reality.
I’ve always liked to think about it as everything is always moving at the speed of light, but that “speed” must be divided between the three spacial dimensions and time. In other words, light is moving through the spatial dimensions at the speed of light so has no “speed” left to divide into time. Something not moving through the spatial dimensions is moving through time at the “speed of light,” and everything else is dividing its “speed” between space and time. Does that make sense?

Love your videos John. Just wanted to mention that when it comes to the quantum mechanical splitting into separate universes: The particle configuration that makes up YOU can theoretically split into separate paths of the quantum wave function, but you can’t suddenly split into a universe where civilization or you never existed. For the group of particles that coherently make up YOU to arrive in some alternate reality, the entire quantum mechanical history that led to your particle arrangement being YOU had to exist first, so while there may be separate quantum mechanical realities with wildly different outcomes, you as an arrangement of particles could never split into them so your conscious self would never have access to those wildly different realities.

I think one of the things that actually helps me sleep at night is the concept of the multiverse and the possibility of multiple versions of me. Whenever something bad happens to me, then, in theory, there is a version where something good happened. I exist because there is a successful version of myself in an alternate universe. They would be an exact copy so it would still technically be me. So I both am successful and a failure at the same time.

Hi John. I would like to thank you for your hard work making this fascinating channel. This and event horizon is the best cosmos info I mainly watch. You are a true great science journalist. Thank you
I've heard the argument that everything that can happen will eventually happen in the multiverse. Given that we live in an infinite universe wouldn't it be more precise to state that everything that can happen, will happen infinite times over, at all times?
That's how I interpret it, either if it is a expansion / contraction eternal universe or it is a infinite. Maybe we live the same exact lives over and over eternally plus we dont have any awareness of our down or dead time. We are just always infinitely here.
I dream of the future. With slight details altered. I've only ever had the luxury to prove this to one person. Concerning a party and where it was going to be at between the two houses. I called it two days early from a dream I had months ago. Infinite universe is my bet. Seriously, these dreams make me believe I've lived before. (still highly unsure of living again, but...) If I am in an infinite universe, and living, then I can conclude I have lived before and will live again, right?
I'm not sure that can be known. We really have no experience with infinity. I mean do you really think there is a universe where you murder your mom on national TV wearing a chicken suit. That is not even close to the craziest situation that could happen but it makes you think. I not sure infinity guarantees everything happens because you could have a infinite number of universes where you don't murder you mom or castrate yourself etc. If you flip a coin for ever I don't think that guarantees you will eventually get heads a googolplex times in a row. You could just get random combinations of heads and tails forever. Again I'm just not sure we can talk about infinity because it's not actually possible. You can never reach it. Infinity can only exist as a potential but never actualized. When people are saying infinity guarantees everything logically possible will happen it is as if they are looking at a "completed infinity". But a completed infinity is only something that exists conceptually not in reality.
Timeshare is a fantastic insight by Einstein. There can be no time without space or space without time. I wonder if you could delink them with enough energy. Imagine traveling instantaneously or going forwards in time.
The reason they are linked is movement. Without space there is no place you can go, and by moving thru space you create a measurable rate of change. Light is an unusual thing and it's nature causes it to always appear to be moving at the maximum rate of change. Without space particles couldn't exist because they'd have no place to go or even be at rest! But if you have space (due to gravity, for example) then you always automatically get time. Nothing can affect time directly because it's not a force or object as such!
There's a really cool theory of this happening in the Elder Scrolls games' lore, where reality is reborn in cycles known as a "Kalpa" and usually some powers or lucky ones carry on over to the next, through a period of creation and disoriented time known as the "Dawn Era". Some fans believe the Dawn Era also features the end of the last cycle and deities and mortal individuals will attempt to be reborn and recreated in the next. One of the main bosses of TES4 is fabled to have had a divine father who came from the previous cycle and carried over with him ideas, culture and magics from an unknown time. Then again, a lot of the lore is told from a mythical, unreliable narrator perspective so a lot could be hyperbole and exaggeration just like in real life. Imagine in our universe, the final, most powerful and ancient civilisations desperately vying to get their message and info through the closing gap as the old universe gives way to the new. What could they have left us? I'm not religious, but if god existed, what if they were the presence of a conglomerated super-civilisation who merged with the new reality and had an influence on everything that happened? If they managed to "pass through the hole" and appear at the singularity where everything came from a.k.a the big bang, would they also occupy the same space as everything for a brief moment, and as everything then expanded, they expanded with it? Maybe that was their plan all along... pass through to the next universe, create a new place for a species that has a close link with them spiritually, but in reality they are actually spiritually linked to and guided to by... themselves? My head...

Want to be creep out? You share the name with one of my professors at University. Unfortunately, my professor die of cancer :( I was hoping your comment was from him before he passed. Is Rasmussen a common last name? Anyways I am glad you are well and alive cheers.
@@germaned.lealnino631 No, I am alive and far away across The Pond in Denmark where Rasmussen is a very common name. I am not a professor though. Jensen is the most common name here, BTW.
@@germaned.lealnino631 RE: "Want to be creep[ed] out?" I have the same name as a lot of different people, mainly because both my first and last names are fairly common. In fact, one year I looked through the local phone book (before cell phones became ubiquitous) and discovered that there were 11 people with my full name. (No, it was not John Smith.) Here are the occupations of some of the well known people who share my name: (1) professor of physics (2) American baseball pitcher (3) American football player (4) British Labour MP for Derby South from 1970 to 1983 (5) American businessman and Democratic politician (6) American physician and tennis coach (7) American historian, New York University, and Harvard University (8) American political scientist and historian, University of Chicago (9) former politician in Saskatchewan, Canada (10) American businessman and philanthropist (11) English explorer and fur trader (12) professor of physics NOTE: (1) and (12) are two separate and distinct persons.
The anomalies of the CMB _don't_ converge on our solar system. It just looks that way because space is transparent, so we can see in all directions. Saying the anomalies of the CMB converge on our solar system is like saying I'm the center of the universe because I can see an equal distance in all directions. We are _in_ an anomaly of some kind -- the space surrounding us is either hotter or colder than the universal average by some tiny amount -- but because it surrounds us, we have to look through it to see the rest of the universe and thus we can't accurately measure how local space alters our measurements of the rest of the universe.
"In a black hole, time and space may switch places..." I like this statement; outside a black hole, you can move in any direction through through space, but only one through time. Inside a black hole, you may be able to move any direction in time, but only one through space. Nice.
Your point about there being no present is what I see as the flaw in how we view Heisenbergs principle, as there is no present, there is no moment, it is impossible to freeze time for an instant, and it is our methodology of trying to capture that nonexistant instant that has lead to our concept, wherein reality is the light is in all of the possible places at the same time, existing between all those points in space, and that we only see it as one or the other when we try and capture the uncapturable.
Thank you for your UA-cam productions! Most societal downers are instantly replaced by your scientific analysis and what-if contemplation: Immensely fascinating.
Love the topic. John, another possibility is that that entities in a trillion years' time or more could become so advanced that they solve every existential threat the universe poses them, even persisting (perhaps as Planck scale entities or suchlike) into the black hole era and beyond, maybe even beyond the next inflation, influencing events in the subsequent universe. Such "final" beings might even persist over serial universes, accumulating like black holes to become ever more ... well, perhaps becoming more complex, efficient or content?
another reason why we are the "ancients" if this hasn't happened yet, not even to that extent, just that there's no large civilizations that cracked the code to colonizing the galaxy makes me believe we are those guys in the future. unless we kill ourselves
A video game character might think a multiverse exists because every move they make has alternate choices which over time could lead to completely different outcomes of the game. Similarly though, there are just as many outcomes that would have played out differently but ended the same . If a multiverse does exist we should be on the look out for events which seem to happen no matter what we do, like extinction level events. .
I sometimes think the multiverse exists when things seem to happen "for a reason" for me, when I somehow get sick when the alternative could have been an inconvenience or even worse for me! Lmaooo It's kind of comforting because even despite me wishing for things a lot of the time, it often makes me feel like I am exactly where I am supposed to be...

Does anyone else find it disconcerting that anything exists at all? Or that we have no idea who we are why or how we got here or what we actually should be doing if anything is worth doing at all...?

If I am in an infinite universe, and living, then I can conclude I have lived before and will live again, right?
Like some kind of "Ground Hog Day"
I'm not sure that can be known.
7:40 that’s actually kind of beautiful. The many has been universes leaving a marker of each other on top of each other.
Maybe that was their plan all along... pass through to the next universe, create a new place for a species that has a close link with them spiritually, but in reality they are actually spiritually linked to and guided to by... themselves?

Recently subscribed. Really love your videos and your ability to describe things well and your tone. I find myself falling asleep often to them, and as someone who’s a terrible sleeper, take it as a compliment. Thank you!
"I blame dark matter"
Lol you really got me with that one John. Great video!
I am here once again at 1AM after a night of Destiny and Dead by Daylight. I love coming to this channel before bed, your voice is so soothing and I love the content. Keep it up my man!
Very enjoyable, still one of the best on UA-cam 🌀. Don't ever retire!
6:19 I really love that balloon comparison. It makes it much mor clear to me on how to visualise this expansion in time.

Thank you John you make my day with your uploads much love from New Zealand
Existance as we know it was meant to be because it has happened. Enjoy the ride! *You have a great and thoughful channel John Michael Godier - good work!!! 👍
I love your videos! I think that the unexplained is why science remains so interesting to so many people, and probably always will.
And it's nearly universally accepted language and to a lesser extent it's accepted paradigms. If we both read the Bible the same way we could have the same fun with philosophy :)
You DESERVE millions of subscribers. I've been here since before you got to 5k. You're fantastic.
Amazing video, yet again. Perfect to relax with. Keep it up!
super cool! wow that black hole one is new to me and so gnarly
Very enjoyable video. Thanks. A lot of other videos of this type give me a headache. I find yours more soothing.
Honestly, the Moon thing really fucks me up. That shit keeps me up at night.
How ghoulish of you to post today. What perfect timing; this extra hour of daylight savings can be spent with you, this video, and this John Michael Godier size dank bowl . Thanks for all that you do. Cheers!
Enjoyed this a year ago and now back enjoying it again - thanks JMG!
@2:55 It's multiple photographs. HINT: Get the true monochrome (red to black) CMB image here: planck.ipac.caltech.edu/image/planck13-002b and just make it monochrome, gaussian blur it and enhance contrast.... Zoom out, it's low res, hence the need for blur...
I was bored so I thought I would try it out. This is the result I got:

So, ummm, what am I supposed to be looking at here?
Starting from left to right:
1. The number 5, or, maybe some running dude?
2. A praying mantis face silhouette-thingy.
3. The number 3, or, maybe the Buddhist 'OM' symbol?
Okay, I just downloaded a 78.7 MB Affinity Designer file which contains a total of 4 adjustments: 2 for Gradient Map, 1 for Curves, and 1 for Levels. Let me give this another shot.
Universes in black holes makes sooo much sense to me... I've commented this on your previous videos... thank you for explaining it in more detail
Glad we received a Halloween treat from JMG rather than a trick from our Boltzmann brain progenitor
How do you know that wasn't a trick?
Your last set of comments about how several different phenomena correspond exactly to the plane of out solar system would be a great topic on its own.
Please upload more. Your voice is better than xanax.
Great video!! Creeped me out more than any ghost story, or horror movie !
And regarding your candy issue. I could be you from a different dimension. One close by, but with interdimentional travel, And a mischievous J.M.G.! LOL Thanks for being/doing what you do. And thanks to the universe for this version of J.M.G..
That last one really got me going hmm.. That all the anomalies of the cosmic background radiation converge to the plane of our solar system. Simply unbelievable! Does anyone have more information?
Commenting in case anyone does more info!

RE: "Want to be creep[ed] out?"
I have the same name as a lot of different people, mainly because both my first and last names are fairly common. In fact, one year I looked through the local phone book (before cell phones became ubiquitous) and discovered that there were 11 people with my full name. (No, it was not John Smith.) Here are the occupations of some of the well known people who share my name:
(1) professor of physics
(2) American baseball pitcher
(3) American football player
(4) British Labour MP for Derby South from 1970 to 1983
(5) American businessman and Democratic politician
(6) American physician and tennis coach
(7) American historian, New York University, and Harvard University
(8) American political scientist and historian, University of Chicago
(9) former politician in Saskatchewan, Canada
(10) American businessman and philanthropist
(11) English explorer and fur trader
(12) professor of physics
NOTE: (1) and (12) are two separate and distinct persons.
Another excellent JMG video! It's a good weekend.
In which we leeeeeeeeve
Haha love those, great video as always. Have a good one!
"In a black hole, time and space may switch places..." I like this statement; outside a black hole, you can move in any direction through through space, but only one through time. Inside a black hole, you may be able to move any direction in time, but only one through space. Nice.
It’s always a treat when JMG uploads a video
Your point about there being no present is what I see as the flaw in how we view Heisenbergs principle, as there is no present, there is no moment, it is impossible to freeze time for an instant, and it is our methodology of trying to capture that nonexistant instant that has lead to our concept, wherein reality is the light is in all of the possible places at the same time, existing between all those points in space, and that we only see it as one or the other when we try and capture the uncapturable.
It’s a school night and I’m up listening to johns podcast at 1:34 am
Wait till it’s work nights for you. Trust me you will be sleeping lol
In the next 9 alternate realities JMG is still a space expert, the go to guy about the universe in any reality
Brilliant as always 👌
Thank you for your UA-cam productions! Most societal downers are instantly replaced by your scientific analysis and what-if contemplation: Immensely fascinating.
Personally, I like the general idea of a very big universe. As touched on in this video. Not infinite, but that it would feel like infinite.
Functionally infinite
When it comes to the idea of a perpetual universe ,you have 'commitment issues' !
It’s infinite if it’s not infinite than I’m fucked up and we’re in a ball like earth in another one etc so that’s fucking weird
Great video. This is one I think I will watch a couple of times.
Lmaooo
It's kind of comforting because even despite me wishing for things a lot of the time, it often makes me feel like I am exactly where I am supposed to be...
Awwww yiss -- thanks for this, John. I'm sick as a dog (not covid yay!) right now and your top10's are straightup therapeutic. Happy Spooktobereenmas!

Well this is the most terrifying video I've seen today.

I just wanted to say thanks for this. This little video gave me a little Halloween for the first time in years and wanted to come back to say it.

Gotta say JMG, your videos are easily among my favorites on UA-cam, and I watch an average of about 9 hours of youtube a day... Keep up the great work man your shits 🔥🔥
I didn't know dark matter could do that to candy. Explains a lot.
Indeed, dark matter loves candy.
Great video, John. Your voice is very soothing, and your ideas are thought provoking. Please keep up the good work.
were do the universe start and where does it finish ? or how much universes there is ?
Your guess is as good as any
Well that’s the big question right there. Haha the answer nobody knows... Yet
Great video as always John!
A lot of these possibilities seem to stem from weird crap happening when dealing with infinities. But what if nothing is truly infinite?
UA-cam deleted my old account so i made a new one and laboriously looked for your channel to sub to it again. I go back to watch your videos from time to time because your channel satiates my fascination with the mysteries of space.

What if there’s universes where every possibility happens, but every night when you sleep, your consciousness teleports to the universe where you made those specific decisions. So like you’re in a different universe every day. Hopefully that makes sense, I’m not explaining it well. But it could explain why staying up multiple days causes psychosis (ironically a lot of times involving delusions of being in a simulations
Does anyone else find it disconcerting that anything exists at all?
Or that we have no idea who we are why or how we got here or what we actually should be doing if anything is worth doing at all...?
I think these exact things all the time.
This is my favorite video of yours, John! However I made the mistake of listening before going to sleep and had a couple of mini existential meltdowns.

The communication is very good indeed! Thank you Dr. John, as always
The “bonus” possibly at the end is my favorite of the whole video. Is there any limit to how precisely and how much resolution we can measure the CMB if we’re not limited by costs/technology of today??
Please please please give us a 10 hour compilation of you talking about space.
I can’t sleep btw...
