    I was looking at JMG's viewing figures last night, both here and on Event Horizon, and I noticed the massive discrepancy: mostly he gets under 100k, sometimes a few hundred k - but some of his videos get over a million views. Almost exclusively, those are the ones with titles that resemble clickbait: "10 things that..." and anything with the word "unsettling" (or "alien invasion"!). Such is the nature of this clickbaity era in which we liiive.
    It made me appreciate this channel even more than before, both because JMG doesn't ever chase the views by forcing things into a listicle format when the topic doesn't suit it, and also because his videos which are in the attention-grabbing format are always just as interesting and rigorous as the others; indeed, they often are the best. So thanks, JMG, for never sacrificing quality for views and still providing us with such excellent content after all this time.

    The thought of finding artificial lighting on a planet, only to find out we're seeing it several thousand years in its past is deeply saddening. We could be seeing a civilization like ours, far past their extinction. It would be like seeing echoes.

      i dont understand the "only to find out" - we would know ahead of time how long ago we were seeing, the distance would be known before we even saw that life was there - and really, we have no idea what is there 'now' - so why assume bad things? Bad things only happen "all of the time" because we have billions of people living all at once.

    • @antibull4869
      @antibull4869 10 місяців тому

      We measure the truth of something by using vastly different measurements to identify it.
      A dog, for example, we recognize as existing because we can see it, we can smell it, touch it, etc.
      All vastly different ways of analyzing our environment, all coming to the same conclusion.
      Going off of that, it’s astounding how similar religious belief and astronomy converge.
      The fact that we are exceptional in the Universe begs the question: why us? Why here?
      Whether one wants to view it as a creator (Abrahamic God) or viewing that specialness as our primary objective, it matters little.
      The fact remains that we are here, we do exist, and there is a way of living that allows us to continue to do that.
      I would argue the Christian faith is the best way to do that (if only because no other religion has made powerhouses of freedom in the same manner at a country scale).

    Fascinating, as always. Back in the early 70s, I was chatting away with several of my ham radio buddies at a wavelength of about 75m. All of a sudden, we all started hearing echos of ourselves. They were strong and delayed by several seconds, at least. I even heard /myself/ repeating short transmissions at a remarkable signal strength, rather strong. We heard double or triple echos. My modest, relatively low powered station was just double echoing. This went on for at least a few minutes.

    • @JohnMichaelGodier

    I respect that Godier sticks to clean objective science. I still wish I could ask him his take on all the viral UFO/UAP phenomenon. It's making the news almost on a daily now.

    • @JohnMichaelGodier
      @JohnMichaelGodier  3 роки тому +3

      It's interesting and I've followed it all since the 80's when I was a teen. The problem is that it's unexplained by its very nature. UFO: Unexplained Flying Object. We literally know nothing more about the nature of the phenomenon than we did in 1950. That doesn't sit well with me. I do believe that people see them, many fully credible. But that's anecdote, and I can't really do anything more with anecdotes than I can do with reports of ghosts or other unprovable things. I need some real, solid, hard evidence above and beyond video to ask the alien question with UFOs. Maybe we'll get that some day, in which case I'll make tons of videos about it. But until then, I just don't really trust the UFO phenomenon. Too much money to be made from here say, anecdote, documentaries, books, Adsense profiting youtube channels and so on. One cannot separate the wheat from the chaff. But perhaps that might change.

    • @wordclock707
      @wordclock707 3 роки тому

      @@JohnMichaelGodier I admit that my own objectivity is starting to buckle. If the academic community rallies around the findings of radio telescopes, why not those of the commercial optical or infrared variety? If optical footage is being certified authentic by the US Military, why aren't our academics dutifully challenging them with their own counter-analysis? There seems to me to be a degree of cognitive dissonance at play. While I do understand the associated stigma that this topic has within the academic community, the video evidence is mounting and does yield far more information than in prior decades. Don't get me wrong, I am thrilled about the hours of smart speculation over the very distant FRB phenomenon, I just wish that in-atmosphere phenomena warranted the same degree of meticulous scrutiny from our best minds. Thanks for staying open to the question, John! I do hope that one day a reckless UFO pilot leaves us with enough tangible debris for you to openly speculate on. Clear skies!

    • @JohnMichaelGodier
      @JohnMichaelGodier  3 роки тому +2

      The video is indeed intriguing, and I certainly trust the pilots. They saw something. And lots of people have seen something. But it gets muddy when you really dig into the videos. For example, some of the footage is linked with Fravor's sighting in the media. That's not true, no footage exists of what he saw (or it's classified). I can't speak for the latest "triangle" videos, that stuff is new, but the previous gun camera footage is a bit dubious in that people have reproduced the effects. And in one case, the HUD in the aircraft is giving information on the object consistent with a party balloon passing below a moving aircraft. But that didn't stop all the media hype about the footage and pinning it on aliens and conflating multiple sightings together into one narrative.
      What needs to happen is controlled, rigorous scientific study. A radio telescope is a very controlled environment for an experiment, it's custom designed for what it does whereas an aircraft patrolling the skies around a carrier isn't designed to hunt UFOs, and will only encounter them by serendipity. It's designed to hunt human vehicles from rivals. So we need more. I'd guess a good starting point would be specialized radar, or a survey of existing radar data. Another natural point is to look into whatever the hell Bigelow aerospace is storing for the Pentagon that's being purported to be materials related to UAPs. If that stuff exists, then it's fully testable and in principle could answer the question of its origins.

    I cannot say how much I enjoy these videos! JMG presents very well researched astronomy, yet still dares to speak about things which orthodox science makes extremely hard for a professional in that field to do. Several of the ideas in this episode immediately bring absolutely *classic* SF to mind as well--quite apart from the 'Attempt No Landings Here' call out.
    There is a brilliant sequence in an even _more_ brilliant book by Larry Niven, 'The Mote in God's Eye' where an asteroid is found exactly as the one mentioned here. Absolutely ancient remains from mining are discovered, so old that every trace of radioactivity has gone completely cold in the nuclear reactors that once powered the facility. Another fantastic story by Niven, 'The Borderlands of Sol' deals with another topic mentioned here--the existence of a micro-singularity in the outer solar system. In fact I wonder if JMG hasn't been enjoying a Niven-binge lately???

      'The Mote in God's Eye' is _such_ a good book--very much an admix of Trek and Hornblower in a feudal far-future that in my opinion is much superior to Herbert's. I am always astonished it has never been made into a film or a Netflix 'limited series'.
      Of course the many 'Known Space' stories are also amazingly good. The entries 'Neutron Star' and 'At The Core' are seminal and also represent the two extremes of SF. Both are compelling, but In the first he got things almost exactly right, whereas in the second he was utterly wrong... But that was not his fault really as even mainstream science was still a few years away from accepting the existence of singularities and probably just as well for Beowulf Schaefer anyway! Had he taken the Puppeteer super-ship to the centre of the galaxy and found a super-massive black hole waiting for him there likely wouldn't have been a trip to Ringworld in anyone's future! Plus in both 'The Borderlands of Sol' and especially 'The Hole Man' he did black holes proud.
      You mention the idea the universe is a white hole. Personally I think we exist within the singularity of a black hole that is in the process of evaporating. I think that would explain dark energy and dark matter rather well and why spacetime is both expanding and doing so at an increasing rate.

    Regarding point 2 (the unknown lurker), there may be a magnetospheric explanation. It is possible for radio waves to couple with the plasma above the ionosphere (such as in the plasmasphere) and subsequently propagate out to several earth radii in altitude, where they then undergo continuous refraction that bends the ray path at every point along its trajectory. These paths have the possibility of redirecting the beam back toward earth and can lead to reflection at the upper ionosphere or in the plasmasphere. In some cases this allows the wave to bounce multiple times back and forth across great distances in both space and/or the ionosphere before finally making it back to Earth's surface. This can lead to long path delays in the same time range you describe, although to actually trace the ray path, one would need to know the particular properties of the emitted wave (frequency, power, beam direction/pattern) as well as the geomagnetic conditions at the time.
    Also, if anyone wants to understand some of the physics behind this, here is a recent paper showing examples of magnetosphere-refracted electromagnetic ("whistler mode") wave paths that arise under certain plasma conditions at selected wave frequencies approaching radio bands: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/2016JA023546 Admittedly it is not the most beginner-friendly read, but there are references within that may provide sufficient background to get a sense for what's going on

    Nine got me thinking randomly, it’s crazy to think how there’s been so many extinctions and over long and vast amounts of time. And each time life has persevered and it’s gotten to this point. Like something restarting or coming to an almost stop yet through time it’s allowed life to evolve and create. It’s crazy to think that could be happening on other worlds. Idk if it’s the Fermi paradox or another but how we maybe be the first signs of intelligent life and if not we are just starting out. Ik the course of evolving to where we are now or to where dinosaurs were it took over hundreds of millions of years and we’ve only been able to really advance in the span of let’s say 4000 years to be generous. It’s like a baby, so much waiting to happen. Unfathomable thoughts

    • @Taz6688
      @Taz6688 Рік тому

      That has been bugging me for a long time, imagine if the dinosaurs never died out, sheer fluke an impact wiped most of them out, who knows what would have happened over the millions of years, looking for life outside our system, perhaps they are reptiles.
