    I just came across your channel when I was looking for videos about the blindshell classic phone. I love this video. You are such an inspiration. I was born legally blind. My retinas didn't completely form. In 1991 I lost all my sight I do still see some light but it's more like putting wax paper over your eyes. The one thing I really miss is being able to see colors. To label things like the microwave I use braille. My friends say I'm amazing because I do things for myself and I do crafts that I learned how to do when I could see but I think you're the amazing one. You know about technology and how the things work for the blind.

    We have the Alexa microwave and love it. Very easy to just put your mug in and tell Alexa to “Heat water”. She says what is the volume? She waits for you to tell her like “One cup”. She then turns on the microwave and tell you how long the time will be. You can also tell her what power setting you want and how much time. We have about 90% of all our lighting controlled by the 7 Echo devices throughout the house. Smart switches come in handy also, like to turn on the power to the treadmill, the air cleaner, fans, and even the Christmas tree. It is really nice to setup routines so that when you for example say “Alexa, good night”, it will turn off whatever lights are programmed into the routine and turn on, say the stove light to 20% as a night lite. We also have a morning routine to turn off the night lights and set the kitchen lights to 30% so as to not “blind” you first thing in the morning. The smart devices have certainly made life and lot easier for my wife who has RP.

    My husband, who is blind, couldn’t make a peanut butter sandwich even if he could see.🤣 I got a air fryer (with knobs) he loves it, it’s one of the best kitchen appliances for vision impaired people. He can cook French Frys, sausage or eggs. I’ll fry hamburgers leavening them a little raw in the center, wrapped them in foil and place in certain area of the freezer . He gets them, drops in air fryer, I have temperature knob set and he turns the other knob completely to 30 minutes and their done. It’s great. Your tips are great, this segment is wonderful especially for those who are just starting to lose their sight. You use many of the items we have, right down to your plates. Like you glass is a nightmare in the kitchen, so I repurposed a lot of plastic containers, coffee creamer containers are great to dispense out candy, nuts or trail mix since they have a pour spout and come in different sizes and shapes. Sometimes I find myself purchasing a product just because the container is great for my husband. Love your shows.

    Thanks for the great tips. Your tip on having the containers different shapes gave me an idea. We keep salt and pepper shakers on the table, but are using a set, so they are the same shape. I'm going use one from another set so they are different shapes making it easy to know which is which!

      That’s a great idea. If I go somewhere like a restaurant where the salt and pepper are in the same type of container, I always give it a smell first! Pepper has a strong smell and salt doesn’t smell like anything.

    Hello.. the bump dots on the microwave... if you put just one more on the number 1, it will start heating for 1 minute, you already have one on the 30 second button. Most things take 1 minute to an additional 30 seconds.. As a raw vegan chef. my knives are extremely sharp (dull knives are dangerous knives for a number of reasons) If you hold a knife with your thumb and first finger gripping the metal on the blade, that will give you a buffer (where your opposite hand that is holding the food bumps up against the other without cutting your finger.. make sure to grip the produce or food you are cutting with curved under fingers.. that can help you not cut yourself.. that is how professionals hold food and hold knives to avoid cutting themselves.
    I use an electric kettle to heat water, and a french press... the kettle has the same capacity as the french press so i don't over fill it. i get my coffee already ground and i use 3 scoops for a perfect cup.. and my french press is double walled so the coffee stays hot.

    I also put bump dots on the 1,3, 5, and 0 buttons on the microwave along with the start/stop, cancel, add 30 seconds, and for the lights under the microwave. Yes color contrast for drinks is a must, but liquid level indicators are great too. Also for people that easily spill their drinks, the Mighty Mugs are useful. I like the baskets ide Sam I will definitely have to get some like those for organization in our kitchen.

    I am getting to the point where I need help so this was the perfect starter. My issue is cataracts that grew in rather quickly this past year. I can no longer see clearly enough to drive so I get my groceries delivered. I am low vision. With color discernment. So I now use the Colorful kitchen idea for a lot of utensils and hand kitchen spatulas etc. I now use silicone instead of wooden wear. I love that dual cutting board. It's all about contrast or color identification. Even though colors are muted for us, we can still see clear mid tones of blues, yellows, greens,reds,purples. No dark colors and I don't fancy pastels either. I want to celebrate color in my life.
    As for cutting I want to get a mandoline slicer with kitchen guard. I have also switched out any glass or ceramic with metal mixing bowls. Also I use metal when I can over plastic. I too have dropped and broke a glass and you can cut your foot up fairly bad if you can't see broken shards of glass. I got out the glass. I use Lexan containers now. Plus good old zip loc bags. Clear glass is the enemy. Thanks for posting this.

    Thanks so much for some great tips. For me using the funnel to refill the Keurig is a new tip. And the pad to keep the cutting board from slipping. I purchased silicone mats of various sizest that contrast with my counters to define work areas and make things easy to find. I also use a pull down spice rack and door mounted spice rack to keep my many spices organized. I have good spatial memory and generally remember the location of each spice, but I also label any up them with my smart pen so I can record by voice what they are. One other tip, rounded corners. If you are remodeling and have the opportunity, make sure you have rounded countertop corners. I also bought a hood vent that is rounded because I used to bump my head on the old square wood one. Keep these great shows coming!

    Because I had some sight until my early 40s, I've grown used to the drip-drop coffee maker. I use a small circular-shaped plastic spoon, that which came with an appliance I got for Christmas over 12 years ago. And it all turns out, it works for measuring coffee, about one to two scoops. Even if you are not a gourmet coffee connoisseur, like me, all coffees, even the gourmet coffees can be bought in the Kurig format. I just would make sure that the Kurig pods can be recycled, as that there is a whole lot of controversy surrounding Kurig and how and that why it was developed. I fyou go to UA-cam, and search under Kurig, a video should pop up from a channel known as company Man. One of his videos is about the history behind Kurig, how and that why it sarted. Also, that the guy even regrets inventing it.

    i love this video, as the kitchen is my domain in my house. Just wanted to suggest that you look into getting a canning funnel. I need to get me an oven glove like you have.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  3 роки тому

      Yes, that’s such a great idea! I’ve been wanting to get a canning funnel for quite a while now. I use very large jars to store flour and sugar, and it’s always a nightmare trying to pour the flower into the jar. I always spill it everywhere. Every single time, I say to myself, A canning funnel would make this so much easier! You can find a link for the oven gloves in my Amazon shop.

  • @shessassy
    @shessassy 3 роки тому

    Great tour!
    I think I need to get some of those oven gloves! I still have good central vision, but I learned the hard way about contrast in my periphery, knocking my white tea cup over on my white work desk! And dropping glasses trying to put them down when I don’t have enough light! I am overconfident sometimes in my own space, trying to avoid too much bright light which is painful.
    Using brightly coloured coasters on my surfaces has helped a bit, until I can get new mugs/cups.

      Yes, I saw a presentation on the mojo contact lens. They said it will have some magnification but will probably mainly rely on AR, augmented reality filters. Things like contrast enhancement and edge enhancement. Still, very interesting technology

      @@theblindlife The first shipping Mojo lenses will correct vision. They will also know where you’re looking and be able to highlight features like the edges of sidewalks for those with acute vision deficiencies. They’ll also be able to present readable text: something I’m looking forward to for when we’re meeting at conferences again and I need notes for a speech. And yes even video.
      Wow bro this i copied from their article...so aren't you excited?

    Unfortunately I have a wonderful wonderful landlord bump dots will do me no good in the kitchen or the laundry room because my stove and my washing machine are both digital there are no buttons or knobs for me to turn

      sometimes you can use bump dots on a flat panel such as a microwave. for example, my microwave has a flat panel but I can put bump dots where the buttons are so that I can feel the buttons. if you can push the buttons with the eraser end of a pencil, then you can use a bump dots on it. but if a eraser does not work and you need your finger, for example on a phone screen, then I do not think bump dots will work.

      Yes I still have to push things however neither Stowe nor the washing machine talks to me so I can’t see what each screen is asking of me I have to choose on the stove high low medium temperatures on the washing machine I have to choose water temperature water cycle water level weather is getting fabric softener so I have to tell it things to do but I can’t see what it’s asking me to do there’s really no use and bumpdotsfor either the stove or the washing machine

      @@anitaboddington4837 I do agree that finding appliances is getting harder and harder for a blind person to use. I do not know your situation, your eyesight level or what your appliances look like, have you had a sighted person go around with you to see if there are any hacks you can use in order to use your appliances? I do not rent, so I pretty much choose the appliances I have. My husband and I always take my eyesight into consideration and doing so. So far, there is very little appliances I cannot figure out how to do. But, as I said, we do keep that in mind when we get appliances. I know that if you rent that is difficult. if not impossible.

      @@anitaboddington4837 I don’t know if this helps or not, but I thought I would tell you about a hack I have for my oven. It is a flat flat panel. I have stickers for the on off and the temperature up and down buttons. I know that if I push the on button and then the temperature up button eight times I will be at 3:50. When I hear the oven beep I know that I have officially set it. I had to do it in front of a sighted person and also had to have that sighted person put the stickers on for me. Now I can do it by myself.

    Sorry, I am going to have to add another comment on top of a comment I already have because I am having trouble editing the comment I already have anyway, my question to you was if you’re living with someone who is totally blind and he can’t see anything at all but if you are legally blind, meaning you have some remaining vision, but you’re still having trouble distinguishing which is the salt and which is the pepper And you won’t be able to tell how much salt you put in your hand for let’s say seasoning a steak or some thing like that how would you help me out with that?

    As a be kind to animals person, I found this video nauseating.
    If you are really blind, the easiest, most nutritious food you can eat is a cup of milk, or even straight from the bottle.
